Practical strategy to produce ultrafine ceramic glaze: Introducing a polycarboxylate grinding aid to the grinding process

Fei Cheng,Ying Feng,Qinqin Su,Daidong Wei,Bin Wang,Yuewen Huang

In this work, a polycarboxylate comb-like polymer was used as grinding aid for ceramic slurry, and the effect of addition of this grinding aid on ceramic process property was highlighted. The grinding efficiency of the polycarboxylate grinding aid (PG) in terms of the particle size distribution and specific surface of unit volume of the ceramic slurry being ground were investigated. Consequently, the PG that was synthesized via free radical polymerization under the condition of an APEG/AA/MA molar ratio of 0.3:1:1, an initiator dosage of 5 wt%, and a reaction time of 6 h at 90 °C, provided better grinding efficiency than those of the triethanolamine and other commercial grinding aids. Specifically, with a dosage of 0.21% and 2 h of grinding, the d 97 and d 50 of ceramic slurry decreased from 13.956 μm and 2.043 µm to 3.739 µm and 0.561 µm, respectively. The cumulative distribution, frequency distribution and SEM results exhibited a uniform particle size distribution for ceramic ground with PG-C. Furthermore, the sintering experiment indicated that a lower processing temperature was capable of producing ultrafine ceramic. These improvements indicated the potential application of the PG as an efficiency ceramic grinding aid, which further facilitating the preparation of uniform ultrafine slurry by a sand mill.

Self-lubricating performance of a grinding wheel filled with CNTs@T304 nano-capsules

Jiju Guan,Zhengya Xu,Lanyu Yang,Zhiqiang Luan,Xuefeng Xu

This paper introduces a new grinding wheel which lubricates the grinding area directly. This is achieved by filling a resin grinding wheel with nano-capsules comprised of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and di-n-butyl phosphite (T304) (CNTs@T304). The CNTs@T304 nano-capsules filled grinding wheel reduces the grinding force, lowers the grinding temperature, and improves the workpiece surface quality. The T304 lubricant is first filled into the CNT cavity to prepare nano-capsules, which exhibit better friction and wear quality than CNTs. Then the paper analyzes the configuration of the nano-capsules in the grinding wheel, together with the investigation of how the filling content impacts the mechanical properties. Additionally, the effects of nano-capsule filling content and grinding parameters on grinding force, grinding temperature, grinding ratio, as well as workpiece surface roughness are studied and the self-lubricating mechanism of the nano-capsules is assessed. According to the experimental results, nano-capsules maintain stable under thermal condition and resist the curing temperature. Moreover, the tensile strength and hardness exhibited by the grinding wheel still meet the application requirements at a filling content <16 wt%. Compared with the grinding wheel without fillers, the nano-capsule filled wheel exhibits superior grinding performance, with a 33 % reduction in the grinding force. Also, the grinding temperature is 28 % lower, there is a 30 % improvement in the grinding ratio, and the workpiece surface quality increases by 35 % under the same conditions. The T304 in the nano-capsules is continually released onto the grinding interface with the wear of the wheel in the grinding process, which forms a self-lubricating layer along with the friction products of the CNTs. This exerts an outstanding anti-friction and anti-wear effect, thereby improving the grinding performance.

Effect of pH, milling time, and Isobam content on porous silicon nitride ceramics prepared by gel casting

Hailing Yang,Zhi Wang,Mengyong Sun,Fei Chen,Jun Ji,Sique Chen,Yingying Chen,Deli Ma,Zhenyu Zhang,Baocai Pan,Yulin Wei,Qinggang Li

As a non-toxic copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride, Isobam is successfully used as a dispersant and a gelling agent for fabricating porous Si 3 N 4 ceramics by gel casting. The dispersity and rheological properties of the Si 3 N 4 slurry are influenced by the pH, milling time, and Isobam content which varies from 0.1 wt.% to 0.6 wt.%, and these factors are investigated. The slurry with 40 vol.% solid content and milled for 4 h has a high zeta potential at pH 12 (adjusted by Tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH)), which means that the particles are well dispersed. The mechanisms of TMAH are electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance. The viscosity of the slurry increases with the increase of Isobam content. After pressureless sintering at 1700 °C for 2 h, a uniform unique interlocking microstructure of rod-like β-Si 3 N 4 grains is observed, which may improve the flexural strength of the ceramics by intergranular fracture and particle pullout of β-Si 3 N 4 grains. The density and porosity of the samples fluctuate negligibly with the increase of Isobam content, and the Si 3 N 4 ceramic with 0.1 wt.% Isobam exhibits the highest bending strength of 251.6 MPa among all samples.

Study of grinding and polishing tools in automated processing of curved stone

Yun Shen,Jing Lu,Changcai Cui

The grinding and polishing of curved stone involve many steps, limiting the process's efficiency. This study proposes a one-step grinding and polishing process to simplify the process and achieve efficient machining. It is achieved by developing the grinding and polishing tools and realizing the entire process on the robotic processing platform, and the tool design is based on the surface roughness of the machined workpiece. The grinding tool is made by selecting the appropriate glue to achieve the connection from carving to polishing. Similarly, the polishing tool is made by selecting the appropriate gel compound system to achieve a high glossiness curved stone surface. The results show that the grinding tool made of epoxy resin YT-CC301 can reduce the curved stone's roughness from 16.281 µm to below 400 nm, and the connection from carving to polishing can be realized by one step. The polishing tool made of sodium alginate and carboxylated chitosan gel compound system or sodium alginate and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose gel compound system can polish the surface of the ground curved stone to the roughness of less than 15 nm, and the surface glossiness can reach more than 120. Therefore, a single step of grinding and polishing of curved stone is achieved.

A novel surgical diamond spherical wheel to prevent bone adhesion with superhydrophobic and super-slippery coatings

Yuanqiang Luo,Chengshao Li,Weidong Tang,Cong Mao,Mingjun Zhang,Kun Tang,Weihua Liao,Jiajia Huang

Ordinary commercial diamond spherical wheels are extensively used in bone grinding surgeries. However, a persistent issue arises from bone debris adhering to the wheel surface, leading to elevated temperatures during the bone grinding process. To address this, the study developed a novel spherical wheel with a superhydrophobic and super-slippery coating to prevent the bone debris adhesion. Initially, a superhydrophobic and super-slippery coating was successfully designed and fabricated with mixture of ODA-GO, PDMS , KH-550, and epoxy resin E44. The coating's surface morphology , chemical composition, and durability were comprehensively characterized. Subsequently, the coating was applied to diamond spherical grinding wheels for bone grinding experiments. The results demonstrate that a coating with exposed ODA-GO forms a rough structure with optimal component parameters, achieving a contact angle of 158° and a sliding angle of 4.2°. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic and super-slippery coating exhibits exceptional wear and slipperiness resistance even after 100 cycles, maintaining a contact angle of 135° and a sliding angle of 8.5°. The use of this novel spherical wheel significantly mitigates bone debris adhesion. This study not only provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of anti-adhesion but also introduces a promising technique for enhancing the performance of diamond spherical wheels.

High-efficiency, self-grinding exfoliation of small graphene nanosheets from microcrystalline graphite driven by microbead milling as conductive additives

Huang Limei,Li Hao,Wang Xinxin,Ding Yuanli,Wang Jianfeng,Jiang Lei

Direct mass exfoliation of graphene from bulk graphite with high yield and productivity for commercial applications is challenging. This work proposes self-grinding exfoliation using the mutual shear friction of graphite particles to fabricate graphene from microcrystalline graphite. The concept is implemented using microbeads as the grinding medium to drive the shear friction between graphite nanocrystals in a high-concentration paste. The proposed approach substantially improves graphene yield from 6.3% to 100% and simultaneously generates a record productivity of 7.5 g h −1 L −1 , achieving total graphite-to-graphene conversion on the kilogram scale. The as-prepared graphene nanosheets have an average lateral size of 298 nm and the same C/O atomic ratio as the pristine graphite. In addition, the well-exfoliated, small nanosheets display good electrical conductivity and exhibit significant potential as conductive additives that improve the specific capacity and cyclic stability of Li-ion batteries better than commercial carbon-based conductive particles.

Parametric design and performance evaluation of TPMS porous vitrified bond diamond grinding wheel using digital light processing

Zhaoqi Chen,Pengzhan Liu,Tanyang Wu,Guoju Bai,Zijing Xia,Ping Han

Porous vitrified bond diamond grinding wheels are commonly used for grinding hard and brittle materials. However, uneven pore distribution and low porosity affect the grinding performance of the wheel significantly. In this study, three types of triply periodic minimal surface porous vitrified bond diamond grinding wheels—Gyroid, Diamond, and Lidinoid–were prepared through parametric designing and digital light processing 3D printing. The grinding wheel achieved a uniform distribution and an interconnected pore structure. The key to high-performance grinding wheel via stereolithography 3D printing lies in the preparation of the slurry with high solid loading, low viscosity and uniform stability. Hence, the effect of surface modifiers on the slurry, along with the effect of sintering temperature and the microscopic and mechanical properties, was investigated. By grinding the SiC ceramics, the material removal rate, grinding temperature, and surface roughness were compared to those achieved using a conventional solid-structure grinding wheel. The results show that the slurry with the highest solid content of 80 wt% (58 vol%) and viscosity of 4.21 Pa s (30 s −1 ) can be prepared using surface-modified particles. The diamond grinding wheel sintered at 680 °C exhibits the best comprehensive performance. A grinding wheel prepared using stereolithography 3D printing can achieve better surface roughness and lower the grinding temperature.

Development of novel high-shear and low-pressure grinding tool with flexible composite

Yebing Tian,Linguang Li,Jinguo Han,Zenghua Fan,Kui Liu

It is known that there are some grinding issues for difficult-to-machine materials, such as adhesion of the grinding wheel, grinding burns, and poor surface quality. In this work, a novel abrasive tool which was based on the principle of liquid body armor was developed with flexible composite to improve the grinding performance. During grinding, particles in the abrasive tool will produce a “hydro-cluster effects” to remove the micro convex of the workpiece surface in a high-shear and low-pressure manner. Rheological measurement of prepared shear thickening fluid (STF) and shear thickening abrasive fluid (STAF) showed that the prepared STF and STAF possessed superior shear thickening properties. In addition, the grinding experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of the novel abrasive tool. Surface roughness of the Inconel718 workpiece decreased from Ra 1.55 μm to Ra 0.38 μm within 90 min. The original pretreatment marks were completely eliminated and the better surface finish was achieved. The surface quality of Inconel718 was greatly improved after grinding. Experimental results verified the effectiveness of the novel high-shear and low-pressure abrasive tool. This work is quite potential to provide an alternative new abrasive tool for the grinding of difficult-to-machine materials in manufacturing industries.

Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy Using Evanescent Waves—Toward Probing Irregular and Complex Surfaces of Mesoscopic-Scale Materials

Pengcheng Hu,Bolin Li,Chen Bai,Xu Li,Xiaolin Lu

With the rapid development of materials science, on-demand techniques are highly needed with the capability to characterize materials in the micrometer and nanometer scales. In this work, we show that, by employing a prism geometry, total internal reflection sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy allows for characterizing mesoscopic materials with irregular or complex surfaces. Four representative examples were presented. First, we reveal that mechanical grinding can subtly alter the surface molecular structures of original materials. Second, spin coating can substantially change the surface molecular structures of particle samples. Third, surface restructuring of carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes can happen in response to the surrounding environment. Fourth, surface adsorption and desorption dynamics of toluene on activated charcoal can be traced. Such experiments demonstrate that there are still a broad range of research fields ahead SFG can be directed to, where materials in mesoscopic scales with irregular or complex surfaces can be studied.

Structure-property optimization in Fe-based diamond composites through biomimetic “brick-mud” interface mediated by Mo-B-C coating

Xinyue Mao,Qingnan Meng,Mu Yuan,Sifan Wang,Shiyin Huang,Yuting Qiu

Fe-based diamond -composites exhibit considerable potential for applications owing to their excellent mechanical and wear properties. However, the weak interfacial bonding between the Fe-based matrix and diamond particles has consistently limited their overall performance, adversely affecting the working efficiency of diamond tools. In this study, a Mo-B-C coating was pre-coated on the diamond surface. During the sintering process, the in-situ gradient chemical reaction between Fe and Mo-B-C coating resulted in the formation of a biomimetic ‘brick-mud’ interfacial structure consisting of Mo 2 FeB 2 , Mo 2 BC, and amorphous carbon layers. The “brick-mud” structure, combining soft and hard phases, enhanced the interfacial toughness by effectively deflecting, branching, and prolonging interfacial cracks. Additionally, the transitional diffusion of Fe within the interface layer helpd alleviate the interfacial stress concentration and suppress diamond graphitization. As a result, the optimization of interface bonding contributed to a 26.1 % increase in bending strength and a 156 % enhancement in abrasive ratio of the Fe-based diamond composites, offering a novel strategy for interfacial modification in Fe-based diamond tools.
