Characterization and Wear Behaviors of Electrodeposited Ni-MoS2/SiC Composite Coating

Yutao Yan,Lifeng Lu,Yuqiu Huo,Yong Zhao

Among the preparation methods of functional coatings, the electrodeposition technique has attracted much attention due to its advantages of economy, high efficiency and good structural adaptability. The application of aluminum alloy materials is greatly limited due to their poor friction reduction and wear resistance. Therefore, to enhance the tribological behaviors of aluminum alloy materials, the Ni-MoS2, Ni-SiC and Ni-MoS2/SiC composite coatings were prepared on the 2218 aluminum alloy by an electrodeposition technique. The prepared composite coating samples exhibited a compact and dense microstructure, which was consistent with the result of their high microhardness. No obvious microcracks and defects appeared at the interfaces, indicating that the composite coating samples had good adhesion to the substrates and can effectively improve the frictional shear resistance. The results of wear experiment showed that the wear rate, friction coefficient and friction response time of all composite coating samples were lower than that of the substrate sample. However, the friction reduction and wear resistance of the same composite coating sample were not consistent. The friction coefficient of the Ni-MoS2composite coating sample was the lowest, and the wear rate of the Ni-SiC composite coating sample was the lowest. According to the worn surface observations, the wear mechanism of composite coating samples was mainly characterized by the mild abrasive wear, flake spalling, tearing and pits caused by particle shedding, and the substrate sample showed a severe adhesive wear and abrasive wear. Keywords:electrodeposition;composite coating;microstructure;friction;wear mechanism

Research on tribological behavior of graphene with in-situ MgO nanoparticles reinforced AZ91 alloy composite

Rongxia Zhao,Zhanyong Zhao,Peikang Bai,Wenbo Du,Di Tie,Zhen Zhang,Liqing Wang,Yu Wang

Magnesium-coated graphene (GNPs) was successfully prepared by a novel organic chemical reduction method with significantly improved wettability and dispersion. The GNPs were uniformly distributed in the matrix, while a finer and more dispersed strengthening phase β-Mg 17 Al 12 was precipitated around it. Moreover, MgO nanoparticles were formed by in-situ reaction on the surface of GNPs, forming nano-scale contact and tight interfacial bonding with the substrate, thereby significantly improving the wear resistance of the composites. The wear mechanism has also changed from severe delamination and abrasive wear to mixed wear of slight delamination , adhesion, and oxidation . The increase in wear resistance is attributed to the combined effect of the lubrication and load transfer of GNPs, the enhanced effect of fine precipitates on the mechanical properties of the matrix, and the synergistic effect of in situ generated MgO nanoparticles against deformation.

Tribological performance of in-situ epoxy composites filled with micro-sized ZrB2 particles

Yicheng Wu,Zhiqiang Yu,Xiaoyan Liu

The tribological performance of in-situ epoxy composites reinforced with micro-sized particles of zirconium diboride (ZrB 2 ) were investigated in dry sliding conditions. The frictional heat flow in the contact areas was analyzed using finite element modeling . It was found that the dominant wear mechanisms of composites were changed from adhesive wear to abrasive wear due to the introduction of ZrB 2 particles under the imposed sliding conditions. The coefficient of friction (CoF) and coefficient of wear K of composites decreased significantly with the increase of ZrB 2 particle content. The increase in thermal conductivity due to the addition of ZrB 2 particles was proposed to contribute to the enhanced wear resistance under given sliding conditions.

A comparative study on wear behavior and mechanism of styrene butadiene rubber under dry and wet conditions

Y.P. Wu,Y. Zhou,J.L. Li,H.D. Zhou,J.M. Chen,H.C. Zhao

As the main component of the tire treads, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used to make tire tread for cars in the rubber industry; understanding the friction and wear properties of tire tread rubber is important to improve the safety of the cars. This study aimed to investigate the tribological properties and wear mechanism of SBR under dry and wet conditions; an improved commercial block-on-ring friction testing machine was used to conduct sliding wear tests between SBR and marble block. The friction coefficients , wear rates and wear debris were analyzed under dry and wet conditions in detail. In addition, the contribution of adhesion and hysteresis components to friction coefficient that originated from the changes of loading was discussed. The results indicated that the applied loads have a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of the SBR composites. Under the condition of dry friction , wear losses increased with the increasing load and the main wear mechanism is both severe adhesive and abrasive wear ; under the condition of water existence, the applied loads would not affect the wear losses, and the wear mechanism is abrasive wear. The knowledge gained in this study is anticipated to provide the theoretical data for a wear theory study of SBR tire tread and can be used for the optimization of designing higher performance tire treads.

Probing the effect of abrasive wear on the grinding performance of rail grinding stones

Wulin Zhang,Changbao Liu,Yongjie Yuan,Pengfei Zhang,Xiaoqiang Fan,Minhao Zhu

Grinding behaviour and wear mechanism of self-fabricated rail grinding stones (GS) using zirconia alumina (ZA), white fused alumina (WA) and brown fused alumina (A) were investigated in detail. The results illustrated that the grinding efficiency grew from GS-ZA and GS-A to GS-WA, and the GS-ZA gave the best ground rail surface quality. GS-ZA primarily consumed as attrition wear, while abrasive pull-out and fracture were dominant for the GS-WA and GS-A, thus making a better self-sharpness. The splintering mechanism of ZA was intergranular and transgranular fracture , and the macro-fracture and micro-fracture were presented by WA and A, respectively. Based on the experimental results, some suggestions about regulating the grinding performance of different GS, such as improving the grinding load of GS-ZA, reducing grinding heat of GS-WA, and the abrasive/bond interface modification of GS-A, were finally proposed.

Dry tribological properties of textured PMMA composites by embedding microspheres with different thermal conductivities

Dapeng Gu,Hui Xie,Ziyu Liu,Suwen Chen,Zibo Wang,Siyuan Gao

Textured surfaces were prepared by embedding microspheres with different thermal conductivities of brass microspheres (BS), 304 stainless steel microspheres (SS), and polyoxymethylene microspheres (PS) on the surface of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). The effects of surface texture and filling modification on the dry tribological properties of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites were studied by ring-on-disc contact. Based on the finite element analysis of friction heat, the wear mechanisms of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites were analyzed. The results show that regular surface texture can be achieved by embedding microspheres on the PMMA surface. The friction coefficient and wear depth of the SS/PMMA composite are both the lowest. The worn surfaces of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites are divided into three micro-wear-regions. The wear mechanisms of different micro-wear-regions are different. Finite element analysis shows that thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient affect the wear mechanisms of BS/PMMA, SS/PMMA, and PS/PMMA composites.

Tribological behaviour of Ni/WC–MoS2 composite coatings prepared by jet electrodeposition with different nano-MoS2 doping concentrations

Anhua Ren,Min Kang,Xiuqing Fu

Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coatings were fabricated in electrolytes with different MoS 2 doping levels using jet electrodeposition. We investigated the surface characteristics of Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coatings, including the composition, surface morphology, microhardness and tribological behaviour. We also analysed the Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coating wear mechanism during the wear process. The outcomes determined that Ni/WC-MoS 2 coatings had better surface quality, smaller grain size and larger coating thickness than Ni/WC coatings. The doping of MoS 2 promoted the deposition of WC in the coatings, which further enhanced the microhardness of the coatings. The Ni/WC-MoS 2 composite coatings doped at a MoS 2 concentration of 5 g/L exhibited a maximal microhardness of 730 HV 0.1 . Doping by MoS 2 effectively minimized the coefficients of friction ( CoFs ) of the composite coatings to 0.3. During the wear process, the repair effect of MoS 2 and formation of oxidised friction films transformed the adhesive wear into oxidative wear assisted by abrasive wear, which improved the abrasion resistance of the coatings and diminished the wear rate. The wear rate of the Ni/WC-5 g/L MoS 2 composite coating decreased by 47.34 % in comparison with that of coatings without MoS 2 doping, which was 7.44 × 10 4 μm 3 /N∙m. The findings indicate that doping MoS 2 can effectively enhance the surface wear resistance. This research provides a practical approach to prolong the service life of metal parts.

Vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing of complex-shaped and high-performance Al2O3 ceramic tool with chip-breaking grooves: Cutting performance and wear mechanism

Haidong Wu,Wei Liu,Yuerui Xu,Lifu Lin,Yehua Li,Shanghua Wu

Due to the processing of alumina ceramic cutting tools with complex shapes using traditional methods is difficult and time-consuming, vat-photopolymerization-based 3D printing was adopted to fabricate Al2O3 ceramic cutting tools with grooves for the first time. Subsequently, cutting performance evaluation and wear mechanism analysis were conducted. The relative density, Vickers hardness, and bending strength of the alumina cutting tools were determined. The effects of the cutting speed, feed rate, and cutting depth on the cutting performance and wear mechanism of the cutting tools were systematically investigated. In addition, two commercial cutting tools, namely cemented carbide and ceramic tools without grooves, were used for comparison. The cutting speed has the highest influence on the cutting performance, whereas the cutting depth has the least influence. The cutting performance of the prepared alumina cutting inserts with chip breaker grooves superior to that those without chip-breaking grooves and that of the cemented carbide tools. The wear mechanisms of the prepared alumina cutting tools and commercial tools were determined to be abrasive and adhesive wear, and those of the cemented carbide tools were adhesive wear and breakage. This work opens a new avenue for the future preparation of high-performance and complex-shaped ceramic cutting tools.

The Low Friction Coefficient and High Wear Resistance UHMWPE: The Effect of Pores on Properties of Artificial Joint Materials

Chunmin Yang,Junhua Zhang,Honglin Yue,Xueqin Kang

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight-polyethylene (UHMWPE) is extensively applied to make bone and cartilage implants in the field of biomaterial application. UHMWPE matched with a metal or ceramic component withstands the long-term effect of cyclic stress, which induces UHMWPE serious wear, and affects the service life of the artificial joint. This investigation focuses on the influence of pores on the mechanical and tribological property of UHMWPE. The porosity, crystallinity, yield strength, tensile strength, hardness, compression yield strength, creep resistance, wettability, friction performance, and wear mechanism of solid and porous UHMWPE were evaluated and compared. The research results indicated that the pore had a remarkable influence on the mechanical, friction, and wear property of UHMWPE. The porosity of porous UHMWPE was 29.7% when 50 wt. % sodium chloride (NaCl) was added and the pore size was about 200 μm. The crystallinity, hardness, creep resistance, strength, and elongation decreased after NaCl was added and dissolved. However, the yield strength in the tensile and compression test was closer to that of the natural cartilage. The friction coefficient and wear loss of porous UHMWPE were higher than that of solid UHMWPE in dry conditions, but these values of porous UHMWPE were lower than that of solid UHMWPE in the calf serum lubrication condition. The main wear mechanism of porous and solid UHMWPE was abrasive. The lubricity of calf serum reduced wear surface scratches and furrows, especially for porous UHMWPE.

Effect of cobalt content on high-temperature tribological properties of TiC-Co coatings

Yaxiong Du,Hongfei Chen,Guang Yang,Bin Liu,Yanfeng Gao,Hongjie Luo

Titanium carbide based cermets are promising wear resistant coating materials used at elevated temperatures in hostile environment owing to their excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties. In this work, TiC-Co composite coatings with different Co content, as well as a WC-17Co reference coating are prepared by plasma spraying and their wear resistances are investigated. The friction coefficients and wear rates tested by dry sliding friction at 600 °C are used to characterize the high-temperature wear resistance of the coatings. The phase and microstructure evolution of the coatings before and after friction test are evaluated to conclude the wear mechanisms of these coatings. The results show that as-prepared TiC-Co composite coatings are composed of TiC, Ti, α-Co, r-TiO 2 and CoO phases and Ti oxidizes to r-TiO 2 phase during friction test, which is resulted from decarburization and oxidation of TiC. Among all the coatings, TiC-15Co has the minimum friction coefficient and lowest wear rate. It is contributed to the balanced ratio and good bonding between Co-rich soft phases and Ti-rich hard phases. The wear mechanisms of TiC-Co composite coatings are abrasive wear for low Co content (<15 wt%) coatings and adhesion/fatigue wear for high Co content ones.

Investigate on preparation and dry tribological behaviors of onion-like carbon/MoS2 polyimide coatings

XingPeng Fei,Shusheng Liu,Ayush Subedi,Xinkai Ding,Enzhu Hu,Kunhong Hu

The development of biomass materials can effectively mitigate the scarcity of energy and minimize resource waste. In this work, onion-like biomass carbon nanoparticles (OLCs) were prepared using rice husk ash (RHA) which was subjected to a high-temperature graphitization reaction catalyzed by iron nitrate. OLCs/molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) composite particles were prepared and incorporated into polyimide (PI), and a composite coating of OLCs/MoS 2 /PI with excellent tribological properties was successfully prepared. The tribological properties of coatings were evaluated using a controlled atmosphere tribometer (WMT-2E) under dry friction conditions. The related friction and wear mechanism of PI coatings including particles was clarified by the SEM/EDS, XPS, HRTEM and DFT theory. Results show that the wear rate of the three composite coatings of polyimide with OLC, MoS 2 , and OLC/MoS 2 particles were reduced by 52.9 %, 48.2 %, and 58.1 %, respectively. For the coefficient of friction, PI-0.20 OLC/MoS 2 coating material decreased by 16.1 %. Anti-wear and friction reduction mechanism is attributed to the presence of a transfer film on the surface of the steel balls. The addition of MoS 2 facilitated the deposition of nanoparticles, which further improved the stability and densification of the friction film, resulting in better protection of the metal surface against severe wear. Besides, the component structure changes of OLCs and MoS 2 and adsorption energy of friction products on the surface of tribo-pairs were also important reasons for clarifying the modification tribological behavior of PI coatings including three kinds of nanoparticles.

In Situ Synthesis and Tribological Characterization of TiC–Diamond Composites: Effect of the Counterface Material on Wear Rate and Mechanism

Yuqi Chen,Jin Li,Liang Li,Ming Han,Junbao He

TiC bonded diamond composites were prepared from a mixture of Ti, graphite, and diamond powders as raw materials, with Si as sintering additives, through high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) technology. The reaction between Ti and graphite under 4.5–5 GPa pressure and 1.7–2.3 kW output power can produce TiC as the main phase. The diamond particles are surrounded by TiC, and the interface is firmly bonded. The coefficient of friction (COF) of TiC–diamond composites with POM and PP balls decreases with increasing load for a specific friction velocity. However, the COF of TiC–diamond composites with agate, Cu and Al balls increases with the rising load because of the enhanced adhesive wear effect. The COF of PP, Cu and Al balls slightly increases with the increase in friction velocity at a certain load. SEM results show that the surface of agate balls has rough, pear-shaped grooves and shallow scratches. The scratches on the surface of POM balls are wrinkled. The PP balls have pear-shaped groove scratches on their wear surfaces. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs is primarily adhesive wear. The abrasion of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs remains almost unchanged as the load increases. However, the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves on the wear surface of TiC–diamond composites are significantly increased. This phenomenon may be attributed to the high rotational speed, which helps to remove the residual abrasive debris from the friction grooves. As a result, there is a decrease in both the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves, leading to a smoother overall surface. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs is abrasive wear, which increases with an increasing load. When the load is constant, as the speed increases, the wear morphology of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs transitions from rough to smooth and then back to rough again. This phenomenon may be attributed to the wear mechanism at low speeds being groove wear and adhesive wear. As the speed increases, the wear particles are more easily removed from the wear track, leading to a reduction in abrasiveness. As the speed increases, the wear surface becomes roughened by a combination of grooves and dispersed wear debris. This can be attributed to the increased dynamic interaction between surfaces caused by higher speed, resulting in a combination of abrasive and adhesive wear. In addition, Cu and Al ball wear debris appeared as irregular particles that permeated and adhered to the surface of the TiC phase among the diamond particles. The results suggest that TiC–diamond composites are a very promising friction material.
