Ascertaining appropriate measuring methods to determine tire wear particle pollution on driving school grounds in China

Haiming Wang,Zhuanxi Luo,Anteng Dai,Xu Liao,Changzhou Yan,Ruilian Yu,Shufeng Zhou,Baoshan Xing

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are garnering increasing attention due to their potential adverse environmental impacts. However, precisely ascertaining TWPs content is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the tire components used in the environment, indicating that more reliable methods to accurately determine TWPs are necessary. In this study, driving school grounds were used as a case study to ascertain an appropriate and reliable method to determine TWPs levels based on a comprehensive comparison between different analytical results using styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and zinc (Zn) as analytical markers. Thermogravimetric analysis-Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-GC-MS) method reliability using SBR was verified and applied to measure TWPs levels on driving school grounds. By reliably converting SBR content to TWPs content, the average TWPs content on driving school grounds was measured at 190.13 ± 101.89 mg/g. The highest TWPs content was 281.83 ± 171.44 mg/g under the reverse stall parking driving programs, while the slope start and stop driving programs was lower at 208.36 ± 124.11 mg/g. Our findings highlight the importance of accurately determining TWPs content within specific environments while comprehensively exploring associated patterns of change to better understand the environmental risks of TWPs.

Leaching-driven transformations of tire wear particles (TWPs): Uncovering the neglected environmental implications

Wenlong Zhang,Weixue Wang,Zhimin Yao,Tengyue Zhang,Huifeng Jiao,Hongjie Wang

Extensive research has been conducted on the leaching behavior and risks of the leachate of tire wear particles (TWPs) in aquatic environments. However, the leaching-driven transformations of TWPs and the subsequent environmental impacts have been largely overlooked. This work examines the changes in physicochemical properties of TWPs during leaching in several water bodies, thereby facilitating a more thorough assessment of the environmental impacts. The results revealed that the environmental behavior related properties of TWPs, including surface morphology, pores, contact angel, zeta potential, functional groups, and surface adsorption sites varied at different levels during leaching. The ionic strength and organic matter content of water body highly determine the above transformations. The carbon index (CI) and O/C ratio of TWPs increased by 55.40 % and 14.27 % after leached in the water for 30 days, while the adsorption capacity of the TWPs for tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) decreased by 27 % and 24.63 %, respectively. Herein, the changes in the functional groups and polarity during leaching highly influenced the adsorption performance of leached-TWPs. This study provides novel insight into understanding the leaching behavior of TWPs in aquatic environments and highlights an urgent need to assess the environmental implications of leaching-driven transformations of TWPs.

Environmental toxicity of tire wear and latex particle leachates in zebrafish embryos: Oxidative stress and ferroptosis as key mechanisms

Tianyu Zhao,Yuping Zhang,Qianqian Song,Qingxuan Meng,Xinrui Meng,Xiaolong Wang,Jing Cong

Microrubber, a subset of microplastics, has raised global concerns due to its persistence and ecological risks in aquatic systems. This study systematically compared the toxicity of leachates (0, 0.5, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 g/L) from tire wear particles (TWP) and latex particles (LAP) in zebrafish embryos for 5 days, integrating physiological endpoints, oxidative stress biomarkers, and transcriptomic profiling. LAP leachate exhibited significantly higher toxicity than TWP, causing increased mortality (100 % vs. 56.3 %), delayed hatching (0 % vs. 35.4 %), and severe malformations (e.g., tail and spine curvature). Chemical analyses identified elevated levels of heavy metals and biologically active organic compounds in LAP leachate, including higher zinc concentrations and benzothiazole derivatives, likely contributing to its greater toxicity. Oxidative stress markers revealed that LAP exposure induced a 1.46-fold increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and suppressed glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity (31.6 % reduction), indicating impaired detoxification. Transcriptomics identified ferroptosis as a central putative toxicity pathway: LAP exposure was associated with dysregulated iron metabolism genes ( mt2 ↑, fthl31 ↑, slc40a1 ↓), and an exacerbation of lipid peroxidation, whereas TWP exposure was linked to adaptive responses via cyp1a and gstt1b upregulation. Functional rescue experiments using ferrostatin-1 further supported the involvement of ferroptosis, showing consistent but non-significant trends of physiological mitigation. These findings highlight distinct mechanistic pathways: LAP exposure correlated with pathways consistent with iron dyshomeostasis-driven ferroptosis, while TWP exposure appeared to induce phase I/II detoxification, providing molecular insights into microrubber toxicity. The study underscores the urgent need for source-specific risk assessments and regulatory measures to mitigate microrubber pollution in aquatic ecosystems.

Tire and road wear particles contribute highly to N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′ -phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and heavy metals in road dust on driving school grounds and their risk implications in China

Zhuanxi Luo,Haiming Wang,Zhenhong Wang,Xin Zhang,Changzhou Yan,Ruilian Yu,Hualan Zhang,Gongren Hu,Baoshan Xing

Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) have received much attention due to their substantial emission and potentially adverse environmental impacts. The specific contribution of observed contaminants, as critical additives of tires, from TRWPs has not yet been comprehensively studied in the environment. As one of TRWPs generated hotspots, driving school grounds in China were chosen to identify source contributions of heavy metals (HMs) and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′ -phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) from TRWPs. Significant correlations ( P < 0.05) were found between TRWPs and 6PPD and zinc (Zn). The average measured content of 6PPD in road dust was 0.47 ± 0.18 μg/g (n = 50). The estimated level of 6PPD in road dust (5.68 ± 3.36 μg/g, n = 50) was far higher than the measured level of 6PPD in road dust on driving school grounds, implying that TRWPs contributed to 6PPD in road dust from driving school grounds. Compared to the levels of 6PPD in other road dusts, 6PPD in road dust from driving school grounds was higher, exhibiting more significant exposure risks to children with the higher estimated daily intakes. Furthermore, source apportionment through the lead isotopic analysis and positive matrix factorization model revealed that TRWPs were confirmed to contribute more Zn, cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) on driving school grounds, notably accounting for 76 %, 31 % and 29 %, respectively. These three HMs presented relatively moderate to strong pollution and corresponding potential ecological risks. Our findings can help identify specific contributions of tire-related additives released from TRWPs in the environment and their potential risks.

Effect of UV exposure and natural aging on the in vitro PAHs bioaccessibility associated with tire wear particles in soil

Qian Zhang,Xinyan Xu,Chenzhuo Song,Dengke Zhang,Yi Kong,Xinyi Cui

Tire wear particles (TWP), as an emerging type of microplastics, are a significant source of contaminants in roadside soils due to their high concentration of pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This study explored the impact of ultraviolet (UV) exposure and natural aging on the in vitro bioaccessibility of PAHs associated with TWP in soil on a China-wide scale. Our findings suggested that UV exposure amplified the negative charge of TWP by 75 % and increased the hydrophobic groups on the particle surface. The bioaccessibility of 3- and 4-ring PAHs in TWP was significantly ( p  < 0.05) heightened by UV exposure. After 20 types of soils containing 2 % UV-exposed TWP underwent natural aging, the bioaccessibility of PAHs saw a significant decrease ( p  < 0.05) to 16–48 %, compared to 28–96 % in the unaged group. Soil pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were the two primary soil properties positively influencing the reduction of in vitro PAHs concentration and PAHs bioaccessibility. According to the prediction results, soils in southern China presented the highest potential region for the release of bioaccessible PAHs from TWP, highlighting the regional specificity of environmental impact. Our study provides valuable insights into the biological impact of PAHs associated with TWP on a regional scale, and offers scientific evidence for targeted soil risk management strategies.

Aging-mediated selective adsorption of antibiotics by tire wear particles: Hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions effects

Jiale Xu,Yuting Zhang,Shaoxin Zi,Xuanqi Zhang,Zhengtong Qian,Jin Liu

Tire wear particles (TWPs), as a prevalent form of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments, have been shown to adsorb antibiotics, potentially exacerbating their toxic effects. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption of ofloxacin (OFL), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfadiazine (SDZ), and tetracycline (TC) on TWPs that have undergone various aging processes, including cyclic freeze-thaw and ozone aging. We observed a significant increase in the specific surface area (SBET) of TWPs after aging, from an initial 2.81 ± 0.29 to 6.63 ± 0.16 m 2 /g for ozone-aged TWPs. This enhancement in surface area and pore volume led to a respective 1.36-fold and 28-fold increase in adsorption capacity for OFL and CIP, highlighting the substantial impact of aging on TWPs' adsorptive properties. Conversely, the adsorption of SDZ and TC was reduced post-aging, suggesting a complex interaction between antibiotic physicochemical properties and TWPs' surface characteristics. The pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemisorption interactions, effectively described the adsorption kinetics, with the Freundlich isotherm model capturing the adsorption behavior more accurately than the Langmuir model. Our findings underscore the critical role of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions in the adsorption process, particularly for SDZ and TC. This study's results offer crucial insights into the environmental implications of TWPs, emphasizing the need for further research on their role in the transport and fate of antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of tire–road wear particles on the adsorption of tetracycline by aquatic sediments

Fan Xiulei,Cao Binwen,Wang Shenpeng,Li Huixian,Zhu Mingxian,Sha Haidi,Yang Yangyang

Tire–road wear particles (TRWPs) are formed by friction between the tire and the road. TRWPs are ubiquitous across the globe, especially in sediments. However, the possible effects of TRWPs on tetracycline (TC) in aquatic sediments are unknown. To investigate the potential role of TRWPs as carriers of co-pollutants, this study investigated the pore surface properties and TC adsorption behavior of TRWP-contaminated sediments and explored the TC behavior in water sediments, as well as the role of aging processes and TRWPs abundance. The results showed that the surface morphology of TRWP-contaminated sediments changed and the adsorption capacity of sediments to TC increased. The TC adsorption capacity of sediments contaminated by 2% TRWPs increased from 3.15 to 3.48 mg/g. Moreover, the surface physical and chemical properties of TRWPs after UV aging changed, which further increased the TC adsorption capacity. The TC adsorption capacity of the sediments contaminated by aged TRWPs increased from 3.48 to 3.65 mg/g. Changing the proportion of aged TRWPs, we found that the adsorption capacity of sediments contaminated by different proportions of TRWPs for TC was 2% > 1% > 0.5% > 4% > blank sediment. These results may contribute to predicting the potential environmental risks of TRWPs in aquatic sediments.

Leaching hazards of tire wear particles in hydrothermal treatment of sludge: Exploring molecular composition, transformation mechanism, and ecological effects of tire wear particle-derived compounds

Tong Sun,Siying Cai,Xinyu Zhang,Dongsheng Wang,Weijun Zhang

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered a significant contributor of microplastics (MPs) in the sludge during heavy rainfall events. Numerous studies have shown that hydrothermal treatment (HT) of sludge can accelerate the leaching of MP-derived compound into hydrothermal liquid, thus impairing the performance of subsequent anaerobic digestion and the quality of the hydrothermal liquid fertilizer. However, the leaching behavior of TWPs in the HT of sludge remains inadequately explored. This study examined the molecular composition of TWP-derived compounds and transformation pathways of representative tire-related additives under different hydrothermal temperatures using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) combined with mass difference analysis. The acute toxicity and phytotoxicity of TWP leachates were assessed using Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67 and rice hydroponics experiments. The results indicated that elevating the hydrothermal temperature not only amplified the leaching behavior of TWPs but also enhanced the chemical complexity of the TWP leachate. Utilizing both suspect and non-target screenings, a total of 144 compounds were identified as additives, including N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PPD), hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM), dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These additives underwent various reactions, such as desaturation, acetylation, and other reactions, leading to the formation of different transformation products (TPs). Moreover, certain additives, including caprolactam and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol, demonstrated the potential to form conjugate products with amino acids or Maillard products. Meanwhile, TWP-derived compounds showed significant acute toxicity and detrimental effects on plant growth. This study systematically investigated the environmental fate of TWPs and their derived compounds during the HT of sludge, offering novel insights into the intricate interactions between the micropollutants and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sludge.

Combined toxicity of pristine or artificially aged tire wear particles and bisphenols to Tigriopus japonicus

Jinbo Song,Qian Meng,Hongyu Song,Xiaoming Ni,Hao Zhou,Yang Liu,Jingjing Zhan,Xianliang Yi

Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered an important component of microplastic pollution in the marine environment and occur together with a variety of aquatic pollutants, including frequently detected bisphenols. The adverse effects of TWPs or bisphenols on aquatic organisms have been widely reported. However, the combined toxicity of TWPs and bisphenols is still unknown. In this study, the combined toxicity of both pristine (p-) and aged TWPs (a-TWPs) and four bisphenols ((bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol AF (BPAF)) to Tigriopus japonicus was evaluated. TWPs increased the toxicity of BPA and BPF but decreased the toxicity of BPAF. For BPS, there was synergistic toxic effect in the presence of p -TWPs, but slightly antagonistic effect was observed in the presence of a-TWPs. This adsorption of BPAF by TWPs resulted in a reduction of its toxicity to the copepod . A-TWPs could release more Zn than p -TWPs, and the released Zn contributed to the synergistic effect of TWPs and BPA or BPF. The aggregation formed by TWPs in certain sizes (e.g., 90–110 μm) could cause intestinal damage and lipid peroxidation in T. japonicus . The synergistic effect of p -TWPs and BPS might be due to the aggregation size of the binary mixture. The results of the current study will be important to understand the combined toxic effect of TWPs and bisphenols and the potential toxic mechanisms of the binary mixture.

Investigation on the adsorption and desorption behaviors of heavy metals by tire wear particles with or without UV ageing processes

Xiulei Fan,Zixuan Ma,Yefeng Zou,Jiaqiang Liu,Jun Hou

In recent years, tire wear particles (TWP), as the significant proportion of microplastics (MPs), has adsorbed much attention due to its widespread presence in aquatic ecosystem . Compared with typical MPs, TWP exists significant differences in composition, additives, characteristics and so on. With TWP and polypropylene (PP) as target MPs, Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ as target pollutants, the adsorption-desorption characteristics of heavy metal ions on original and aged MPs were studied. Compare with the PP, the S BET of TWP increased more significantly after the UV ageing process. Meanwhile, the zeta potential of TWP increased from −8.01 to −14.6 mV and PP from −5.36 to −9.52 mV, and the surface of the TWP were more negatively-charged. In addition, the hydrophilicity of MPs enhanced due to the increased oxygen-containing functional groups after ageing process. Compared with PP, the physicochemical properties of TWP changed more obviously during UV ageing processes. The adsorption results showed that the pseudo-second-order model could better describe the adsorption processes of Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ on MPs. Meanwhile, the orders of adsorption capacity of MPs for Cd 2+ and Pb 2+ were aged TWP > aged PP > original TWP > original PP. The phenomenon of adsorption confirmed that TWP had better vector effects for heavy metal ions than PP, and the ageing processes could enhance the adsorption capacity of MPs. Moreover, the desorption results demonstrated that, compared with PP, the TWP (with higher adsorption capacity) also had the better desorption capacity for heavy metal ions in simulated gastric fluid. Compared with PP, the TWP might cause a more serious hazard to aquatic environment and organisms. These investigations would contribute to assessing the potential environmental and biological risk of TWP, especially considering the effect of the ageing process.

Ecotoxicological effects of micronized car tire wear particles and their heavy metals on the earthworm (Eisenia fetida) in soil

Yingfei Sheng,Yi Liu,Kewei Wang,James V. Cizdziel,Yichun Wu,Ying Zhou

As one of the most common and persistent emerging human-made pollutants, microplastics (MPs) have become a global environmental problem. Although many studies have demonstrated the impact of MPs on aquatic organisms, the potential effects on terrestrial fauna are relatively unknown, even though soil is a major sink for plastic pollution. In this study, earthworms ( Eisenia fetida ) were exposed to MPs from tires (TMPs) in artificial soil at different TMP concentrations (0, 1, 5, 10, and 20%, w /w), at different TMP size fractions (2 mm–350 μm; 350 μm–50 μm; 50 μm–25 μm; and <25 μm), and time periods (14 and 28 days). The purpose was to evaluate the impact of TMPs on the bioaccumulation of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, and Pb) and levels of oxidative stress in the earthworms. Fluorescence imaging of TMPs stained with Nile red dye clearly showed that the worms had ingested the TMPs, with smaller particles preferentially consumed. The ingested TMPs had altered the surface morphology, degradation that increased surface area and uptake of heavy metals into the organisms. Earthworms exposed to TMPs at the higher concentrations showed clear signs of oxidative stress, with significantly ( p < 0.05) increased catalase and peroxidase activity and lipid peroxidation levels, and reduced activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase. SOD, POD, and CAT are important cell protection enzymes that prevent excessive levels of reactive oxygen species in cells. MDA represents the total scavenging ability of free radicals in the tissue. SOD decreases and MDA accumulates rapidly. GST has a detoxification effect. Overall, this study adds to the growing body of evidence that TMPs are harmful to certain terrestrial organisms.

Release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tire road wear particles in simulated digestive fluids: release rules and influencing factors

Fan Xiulei,Wang Shenpeng,Liu Yuhan,Zhang Shu,Wang Wenjie,Ji Wei,Yu Jiazheng,Wang Qian,Lv Bowen

The behavior of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released from tire road wear particles (TRWPs) in human digestive fluids may pose a significant risk to human health. However, the current understanding of the release pattern and influencing factors of PAHs from TRWPs is still insufficient. In this study, the release characteristics of PAHs from UV-aging TRWPs (ATRWPs) were systematically investigated by in vitro digestive simulation experiments, release kinetic model fitting and control variable experiments. The results showed that the total amount of PAHs released from ATRWPs in simulated intestinal and gastrointestinal fluids reached 32.7 and 60.5 mg/kg, respectively, with the highest amount of Phenanthrene (22.4 mg/kg), and the Elovich and double-constant release models demonstrated that PAHs release behaviors involved non-homogeneous diffusion by multiple mechanisms. In addition, UV aging significantly contributed to the release of PAHs from TRWPs, and digestive enzymes further exacerbated this process to some extent. In addition, the release behavior of PAHs from TRWPs was similar to that of PAHs from their main constituents (Road wear particles, Tire wear particles). These results suggest that aging effects, digestive enzymes, and composition of tire road wear micro are the main factors influencing the release behavior of PAHs from TRWPs.
