In Situ Synthesis and Tribological Characterization of TiC–Diamond Composites: Effect of the Counterface Material on Wear Rate and Mechanism

Yuqi Chen,Jin Li,Liang Li,Ming Han,Junbao He

TiC bonded diamond composites were prepared from a mixture of Ti, graphite, and diamond powders as raw materials, with Si as sintering additives, through high-temperature and high-pressure (HTHP) technology. The reaction between Ti and graphite under 4.5–5 GPa pressure and 1.7–2.3 kW output power can produce TiC as the main phase. The diamond particles are surrounded by TiC, and the interface is firmly bonded. The coefficient of friction (COF) of TiC–diamond composites with POM and PP balls decreases with increasing load for a specific friction velocity. However, the COF of TiC–diamond composites with agate, Cu and Al balls increases with the rising load because of the enhanced adhesive wear effect. The COF of PP, Cu and Al balls slightly increases with the increase in friction velocity at a certain load. SEM results show that the surface of agate balls has rough, pear-shaped grooves and shallow scratches. The scratches on the surface of POM balls are wrinkled. The PP balls have pear-shaped groove scratches on their wear surfaces. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs is primarily adhesive wear. The abrasion of TiC–diamond composites with Cu ball pairs remains almost unchanged as the load increases. However, the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves on the wear surface of TiC–diamond composites are significantly increased. This phenomenon may be attributed to the high rotational speed, which helps to remove the residual abrasive debris from the friction grooves. As a result, there is a decrease in both the depth and width of the pear-shaped grooves, leading to a smoother overall surface. The wear mechanism of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs is abrasive wear, which increases with an increasing load. When the load is constant, as the speed increases, the wear morphology of TiC–diamond composites with Al ball pairs transitions from rough to smooth and then back to rough again. This phenomenon may be attributed to the wear mechanism at low speeds being groove wear and adhesive wear. As the speed increases, the wear particles are more easily removed from the wear track, leading to a reduction in abrasiveness. As the speed increases, the wear surface becomes roughened by a combination of grooves and dispersed wear debris. This can be attributed to the increased dynamic interaction between surfaces caused by higher speed, resulting in a combination of abrasive and adhesive wear. In addition, Cu and Al ball wear debris appeared as irregular particles that permeated and adhered to the surface of the TiC phase among the diamond particles. The results suggest that TiC–diamond composites are a very promising friction material.

Yumin An,Mingyao Song,Kun Wan,Yongna Jia,Yi Yang,Yehong Cheng

The anisotropic friction properties of biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with fibers disposed along Bouligand structures are analyzed. First, the friction properties parallel to and vertical to the hot-pressing surfaces are analyzed for the C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with different carbon fiber contents. The anisotropy of friction properties of the biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with Bouligand structures is analyzed based on the microstructures of wear surfaces. Second, the anisotropic friction properties of biomimetic C f /ZrB 2 -SiC ceramic composites with Bouligand structures under high speed and wet conditions are also explored. Under various working environments, the wear mechanisms including abrasive wear , adhesive wear , oxidation wear, and fatigue wear are analyzed in detail based on the microstructures of the wear surfaces. This paper provides a good reference for analyzing the anisotropic friction properties of ceramic composites with Bouligand structures.

Current-carrying friction behavior and wear mechanism of Ag coatings by rotary spray deposition

Jiebin Du,Mingchong Lu,Jiamin Fang,Wei Li,Dexin Chen

In this work, an innovative approach termed rotary spray deposition has been developed for the synthesis of conductive and wear-resistant silver (Ag) coatings on copper (Cu) substrates, aimed at applications in electrical contact materials. The fabricated coatings exhibited superior properties, demonstrating significantly higher hardness (140 HV) and markedly lower resistivity (1.711 × 10 -8  Ω m) compared to conventional silver contacts. The tribological behavior and wear mechanisms of the Ag coatings were rigorously evaluated using reciprocating friction testing under conditions of minimal load and current. Findings revealed that wear predominantly occurs through mechanisms of fatigue, abrasive, and adhesive wear. Notably, the introduction of a 2A current in conjunction with a 3 N force during friction testing resulted in a stable and reduced coefficient of friction, a smoother wear track surface, and the lowest contact resistance observed, indicative of enhanced antiwear properties. This improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of electric current and friction, leading to the formation of a nanocrystalline structural layer at the wear track. Such a layer facilitates a stable frictional contact state and enlarges the contact area, thereby achieving a stable conductive state with reduced contact resistance and, consequently, superior tribological properties.

Study on the Wear Behavior Mechanism of SUS304 Stainless Steel During the Homogenization Process of LFP/NCM Slurry

Xiangli Wen,Mingkun Bi,Lvzhou Li,Jianning Ding

During the homogenization process of lithium battery slurry, the slurry shearing process causes the surface of the homogenization equipment to wear and generate metal containing debris, which poses a risk of inducing battery self-discharge and even explosion. Therefore, inhibiting wear of homogenizing equipment is imperative, and systematic investigation into the wear behavior and underlying mechanisms of SUS304 stainless steel during homogenization is urgently required. In this study, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) cathode slurries were used as research objects. Changes in surface parameters, microstructure, and elemental composition of the wear region on SUS304 stainless steel under different working conditions were characterized. The results indicate that in the SUS304-lithium-ion battery slurry system, the potential wear mechanism of SUS304 gradually evolves with changes in load and rotational speed, following the order: adhesive wear (low speed, low load) → abrasive wear (medium speed, high load) → fatigue wear (high speed). Under high-load and high-rotational-speed conditions, oxidative corrosion wear on the ball–disc contact surface is particularly pronounced. Additionally, wear of SUS304 is more severe in the LFP slurry system compared to the NCM system. Macroscopic experiments also revealed that the speed effect is a core factor influencing the wear of SUS304, and the increase in its wear rate is more than twice that caused by the load effect. This study helps to clarify the wear behavior and wear mechanism evolution of homogenization equipment during the lithium battery homogenization process, providing data support and optimization direction for subsequent material screening and surface strengthening treatment of homogenization equipment components.

A comparative study on wear behavior and mechanism of styrene butadiene rubber under dry and wet conditions

Y.P. Wu,Y. Zhou,J.L. Li,H.D. Zhou,J.M. Chen,H.C. Zhao

As the main component of the tire treads, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used to make tire tread for cars in the rubber industry; understanding the friction and wear properties of tire tread rubber is important to improve the safety of the cars. This study aimed to investigate the tribological properties and wear mechanism of SBR under dry and wet conditions; an improved commercial block-on-ring friction testing machine was used to conduct sliding wear tests between SBR and marble block. The friction coefficients , wear rates and wear debris were analyzed under dry and wet conditions in detail. In addition, the contribution of adhesion and hysteresis components to friction coefficient that originated from the changes of loading was discussed. The results indicated that the applied loads have a significant effect on the friction and wear properties of the SBR composites. Under the condition of dry friction , wear losses increased with the increasing load and the main wear mechanism is both severe adhesive and abrasive wear ; under the condition of water existence, the applied loads would not affect the wear losses, and the wear mechanism is abrasive wear. The knowledge gained in this study is anticipated to provide the theoretical data for a wear theory study of SBR tire tread and can be used for the optimization of designing higher performance tire treads.

Probing the effect of abrasive wear on the grinding performance of rail grinding stones

Wulin Zhang,Changbao Liu,Yongjie Yuan,Pengfei Zhang,Xiaoqiang Fan,Minhao Zhu

Grinding behaviour and wear mechanism of self-fabricated rail grinding stones (GS) using zirconia alumina (ZA), white fused alumina (WA) and brown fused alumina (A) were investigated in detail. The results illustrated that the grinding efficiency grew from GS-ZA and GS-A to GS-WA, and the GS-ZA gave the best ground rail surface quality. GS-ZA primarily consumed as attrition wear, while abrasive pull-out and fracture were dominant for the GS-WA and GS-A, thus making a better self-sharpness. The splintering mechanism of ZA was intergranular and transgranular fracture , and the macro-fracture and micro-fracture were presented by WA and A, respectively. Based on the experimental results, some suggestions about regulating the grinding performance of different GS, such as improving the grinding load of GS-ZA, reducing grinding heat of GS-WA, and the abrasive/bond interface modification of GS-A, were finally proposed.

Effect of Diamond Content on Thermal, Mechanical, and Tribological Properties of Resin-Based Friction Materials

Zhe Zhou,Man Li,Zhi Li,Xun Ma,Changjin Lei,Dawang Xia,Qiyuan Yang,Jisi Wu,Lu Yi,Xiaowang Lu

The friction and wear performance of friction materials for automotive brakes in high-temperature environments is becoming increasingly important as service conditions become more complex. Resin-based friction materials with different diamond contents were prepared using the hot press molding method, and their thermal, mechanical, and tribological properties were thoroughly examined. The results showed that the thermal properties of the materials decreased with the increase of diamond content, the mechanical properties showed different trends, and the wear mechanism evolved from abrasive wear to adhesive wear. The sample with 4 wt.% diamond added has the highest weight residue and 5% mass loss at 800°C, which are 92.9% and 742.9°C, respectively, while its compressive strength and modulus reach the maximum values of 159 and 2422 MPa, respectively. High content of diamond (12 wt.%) can be easily exposed and physically isolated at the wear interface, which leads to no friction film and increased adhesion on the surface of the sample. The low diamond content (4 wt.%) tends to generate abrasive debris and friction lubrication film at the wear interface, resulting in a high average friction coefficient (0.35–0.50) and the lowest volume wear rate (2–3 × 10 −14 m 3 N −1 m −1 ) at high temperatures, with the best tribological property.

Bonded flake MoS2 solid lubricant coating: An effective protection against fretting wear

Jianing Yin,Han Yan,Meng Cai,Shijie Song,Xiaoqiang Fan,Minhao Zhu

The multiple advantages of flake MoS 2 are of great significance for improving the fretting wear resistance of bonded solid lubricant coating. Herein, the coating was constructed with liquid-phase exfoliated flake MoS 2 as lubricating filler and epoxy resin as binder. The tangential fretting characteristics for the contact of AISI 52,100 steel ball against the as-prepared coating on the AISI 1045 steel were investigated under three displacement amplitude. Results show that the average friction coefficient and wear rate of the coating with flake MoS 2 maximumly reduce by 45.5% and 89.8% than those with bulk MoS 2 . Moreover, the fretting regime is regulated by the coatings with different composition and performance. Such excellent anti-fretting features depend on: (a) the intrinsic shearing properties of flake MoS 2 ; (b) the repairing effect on the worn area; (c) the formation of uniform transfer film.

A novel parallelly-arranged Ti3C2Tx resin based solid-grease composite coating with super-low friction/wear

Tian Zhang,Liangliang Xiong,Zhongpan Zhang,Xiaoqiang Fan

To achieve the desired performance of ultra-low friction and wear, we devised an ingenious solid-grease composite lubrication coating (TXL) that combined parallel-arranged Ti 3 C 2 T x resin coatings (TX) and lithium complex grease (LCG). The TX coating facilitated in-situ supply of Ti 3 C 2 T x and effectively inhibited crack propagation, while the LCG ensured a stable oil film bearing capacity. The Stribeck theory demonstrates that TXL consistently remained in boundary lubrication. At 253.93 MPa for 2 h, pure epoxy (EP) and TX coating failed, while TXL still enhanced anti-friction by 19.57 % and anti-wear by 64.31 % relative to EPL. Combining the dual advantages of Ti 3 C 2 T x that promotes lubrication state change and oil-based films supplied by LCG, TXL demonstrates enormous potential for long-lasting, efficient, and stable lubrication.

Preparation and Tribological Behavior of Nitrogen-Doped Willow Catkins/MoS2 Nanocomposites as Lubricant Additives in Liquid Paraffin

Yaping Xing,Ebo Liu,Bailin Ren,Lisha Liu,Zhiguo Liu,Bocheng Zhu,Xiaotian Wang,Zhengfeng Jia,Weifang Han,Yungang Bai

In this study, willow catkins/MoS2nanoparticles (denoted as WCMSs) have been prepared using a hydrothermal method. The WCMSs were modified with oleic acid (OA) to improve dispersion in base oil. The friction and wear properties of WCMSs in liquid paraffin (LP) for steel balls were investigated using a four-ball wear tester. The results have shown that at a high reaction temperature, willow catkins (being used as a template) and urea (being used as a nitrogen resource) can effectively decrease the wear scar diameters (WSDs) and coefficients of friction (COFs). At a concentration of 0.5 wt.%, the WSD and COF of steel balls, when lubricated using LP containing modified WCMS with urea, decreased from 0.65 mm and 0.175 of pure LP to 0.46 mm and 0.09, respectively. The addition of urea and hydroxylated catkins can generate a significant number of loose nano-sheets and even graphene-like sheets. The weak van der Waals forces, decreasing the shear forces that the steel balls must overcome, provide effective lubrication during rotation. On the other hand, the tribo-films containing MoS2, FeS, azide, metal oxides and other compounds play important roles in reducing friction and facilitating anti-wear properties. Keywords:willow catkins;MoS2;hydrothermal;urea;wear

Effects of polyacrylic acid molecular weights on V2C-MXene nanocoatings for obtaining ultralow friction and ultralow wear in an ambient working environment

Xuan Yin,Haohao Chen,Lai Jiang,Chang Liang,Haosheng Pang,Dameng Liu,Bing Zhang

Two modified V2C-MXene nanocoatings are prepared through different molecular weights of polyacrylic acid (polyacrylic acid with ∼4 50 000 is marked as LPAA, and polyacrylic acid with ∼4 000 000 is marked as HPAA) and two-dimensional V2C-MXene. Their properties are characterized using a ball-on-disc tribometer, three-dimensional white-light interferometry topography images, optical microscope, Raman spectrometer, focused ion beam/scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscope/energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (HRTEM/EDS). As a result, an ultralow friction (μ ≈ 0.073 ± 0.024) and an ultralow wear (3.41 × 10−7 mm3 N−1 m−1 for ball scar, and 7.49 × 10−8 mm3 N−1 m−1 for disc track) are achieved for the LPAA@V2C vs. steel ball system tested under 4 N in the air through tribo-physicochemical interactions. During the rubbing process, the LPAA@V2C nanocoating is transferred onto counter-bodies to form mixed-phase lubricative tribofilms. Monitoring via a HRTEM/EDS, the mixed-phase lubricative tribofilms are found to be mainly composed of amorphous carbon phases containing O and V and layered nano-debris along the sliding surface. The tribofilm's stable structure is the key to realizing ultralow friction and ultralow wear through the LPAA modification. These findings disclose that MXene-based nanomaterials can be applied for material engineering and mechanical engineering under common working conditions.

Wear-Resistant Epoxy Coatings With KH550-Functionalized SiC@SiO2: Effects of Thermal Oxidation and Surface Grafting

Yuting Qiu,Qingnan Meng,Chi Zhang,Mu Yuan,Xinyue Mao,Sifan Wang,Shiyin Huang

In this study, a wear-resistant epoxy resin (EP) composite coating incorporating surface-modified silicon carbide (SiC) particles was developed. The SiC particles were functionalized through sequential thermal oxidation and silane coupling agent (KH550) modification to yield SiC@SiO 2 -KH550 hybrid fillers. The influence of filler addition and content on the tribological properties was investigated with a pin-on-disk wear tester, whereas the wear morphology was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the neat EP coatings primarily exhibit an adhesive wear mechanism, whereas the composite coatings show a mixed wear mechanism involving adhesion, abrasion, and delamination. The composite coating with 20 wt% SiC@SiO 2 -KH550 filler achieved optimal tribological performance, with reductions in wear rate by 80% and 26% compared to neat EP and unmodified SiC/EP systems, respectively. The enhanced wear resistance is mainly attributed to the modified SiC particles, which promote the formation of transfer films with excellent mechanical properties and a larger area ratio through improved interfacial bonding and dispersion.
