Bulk Ni 2 P and Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni 2 P were prepared at low phosphidation temperature (300 or 330 °C) from nickel nitrate, oxide, sulfate, chloride, and acetate as nickel source and ammonium and sodium hypophosphite as well as hypophosphoric acid as phosphorus source. The hypophosphite source was positioned up-flow of the nickel source in an oven and flowing N2 gas transported the phosphine formed in the decomposition of hypophosphite to the nickel compound. X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, temperature-programmed reduction in H 2 , and transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, CO chemisorption, and solid-state 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance were used to study the bulk and supported Ni 2 P. Whereas unsupported nickel nitrate, sulfate, chloride, and oxide led to impure Ni 2 P, nickel acetate gave pure Ni 2 P. Ni 2 P/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were therefore prepared from nickel acetate and their activity was studied in the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene. Separating the hypophosphite from the nickel compound has the advantage that the phosphate formed in the disproportionation of hypophosphite does not reach the Al 2 O 3 -supported Ni compound and cannot block the pores of the support. Ni 2 P is formed by sequential reduction and phosphidation reactions and therefore its preparation demands careful adjustment of the synthesis conditions. Insufficient PH 3 leads to Ni and Ni 12 P 5 side products and too much PH 3 to Ni 5 P 4 , which all have a lower HDS activity than Ni 2 P.

Molybdenum diphosphide (MoP 2 ), a topological semimetal, possesses distinctive properties and applications in catalysis, energy storage, and condensed matter physics. However, synthesizing high-purity MoP 2 is complex and often results in undesired stoichiometric by-products. Additionally, the intrinsic orthorhombic crystal structure makes it difficult to synthesize MoP 2 in a 2D morphology, which is desirable for device and energy applications. Here, the robust synthesis of MoP 2 with a well-defined 2D morphology is achieved using the confined gas-solid phosphorization of a MoS 2 precursor on substrates. The use of 2D precursors and the surface confinement provided by the substrate maintain the 2D morphology and result in a thickness-dependent stoichiometry of the phosphorization products. The chemical composition and crystal structure of MoP 2 nanosheets are comprehensively characterized. At room temperature, MoP 2 nanosheets exhibit metallic transport with high conductivity over 5500 S cm −1 . Furthermore, MoP 2 nanosheets demonstrate excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability for hydrogen evolution in both neutral and acid mediums. Notably, MoP 2 nanosheets possess better durability than amorphous Pt film and commercial Pt/C, positioning MoP 2 as a promising catalyst for hydrogen evolution in neutral mediums. This work advances the synthetic chemistry of 2D MoP 2 and provides 2D semimetals with a novel member for future explorations in diverse fields.

The characteristics of the reaction for the preparation of dichlorophenylphosphine (DCPP) via benzene and PCl 3 in the presence of AlCl 3 were studied. Some unique characteristics were observed when a catalytic amount of AlCl 3 was used. Namely, more than one mole of DCPP was obtained per mole AlCl 3 , the reaction solution was layered, and DCPP could be directly separated. Our mechanistic study showed that benzene reacted with PCl 3 to form DCPP-AlCl 3 , and DCPP-AlCl 3 dissociated into DCPP and AlCl 3 , continuing to catalyze this reaction. This resulted in the high catalytic efficiency of AlCl 3 . The layering of the reaction solution was caused by the immiscibility of DCPP-AlCl 3 with the raw materials, greatly facilitating the dissociation process of DCPP-AlCl 3 . The formation of diphenylphosphorus chloride (DPC) was due to a continuous Friedel-Crafts reaction between DCPP and benzene. DPC cooperated with AlCl 3 to form the stable coordination compound DPC-AlCl 3 that did not dissociate and was responsible for the deactivation of AlCl 3 .

An efficient method for the construction of C–P(V) and C–P(III) bonds via the iron-catalyzed phosphorylation of alcohols under ligand-free conditions is disclosed. This strategy represents a straightforward process to prepare a series of phosphine oxides and phosphine compounds in good to excellent yields from the readily available alcohols and P–H compounds. A plausible mechanism is also proposed. We anticipate that this mode of transforming simple alcohols would apply in chemical synthesis widely.
