Nitrogen-doped carbon-decorated yolk-shell CoP@FeCoP micro-polyhedra derived from MOF for efficient overall water splitting

Jinghui Shi,Fen Qiu,Wenbo Yuan,Manman Guo,Zhang-Hui Lu

Designing efficient non-precious electrocatalysts to facilitate overall water splitting is crucial and highly desirable but remains challenging. In this study, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon-decorated CoP@FeCoP yolk-shelled micro-polyhedras (denoted as CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs) via the phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues YSMPs. The yolk-shelled construction and nitrogen-doped carbon matrix can effectively reduce the degree of CoP agglomeration, which is beneficial for increasing the specific surface area and active sites of the catalysts. The synergistic effect of yolk-shelled structure and nigtrogen-doped carbon matrix also optimizes the electronic structure and enhances the electrocatalytic activity of CoP@FeCoP/NC YSMPs. In an alkaline electrolyte, the overpotentials of hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction only need 141 and 238 mV, respectively, to drive the current density of 10 mA cm −2 . When a two-electrode water splitting device was conducted with the as-prepared catalyst, it required only a low cell voltage of 1.68 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and displayed outstanding stability over 20 h. This work offers insights into the facile, controllable synthesis strategy of various non-precious metal nanomaterials for high-efficiency water splitting electrocatalysis.

Porous tremella-like NiMoP/CoP network electrodes as an efficient electrocatalyst

Jianzhi Wang,Jie Yang,Fuhua Huang,Yuru Li,Yu Luo,Yanan Xue,Ning Cai,Hui Li,Faquan Yu

The design of efficient, stable and cost-effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction holds substantial significance in water electrolysis, but it remains challenging. Tremella-like nickel-molybdenum bimetal phosphide encapsulated cobalt phosphide (NiMoP/CoP) with hierarchical architectures have been effectively synthesized on nickel foam (NF) via a straightforward hydrothermal followed by a low-temperature phosphating method. Based on the unique structural benefits, it significantly increases the number of redox active centers, enhances the electrical conductivity of materials, diminishes ion diffusion path lengths, thereby promoting the efficient electrolyte penetration and reducing the inherent resistance. The as-obtained NiMoP/CoP/NF electrocatalyst exhibited remarkable catalytic activity with a ultralow overpotential of 38 mV (10 mA cm-2) and low Tafel of slope (83 mV dec-1). The straightforward synthesis process and exceptional electrocatalytic properties of NiMoP/CoP/NF demonstrate great potential for HER to replace the precious metal catalyst.

Promoting oxygen reduction reaction kinetics through manipulating electron redistribution in CoP/Cu3P@NC for aqueous/flexible Zn–air batteries

Lixia Wang,Jiasui Huang,Jia Huang,Bowen Yao,Aling Zhou,Zhiyang Huang,Tayirjan Taylor Isimjan,Bao Wang,Xiulin Yang

Zinc–air batteries (ZABs) are considered a promising energy storage technology due to their high energy density and environmental friendliness. However, the development of efficient and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of a highly efficient CoP/Cu3P@NC catalyst using a Zn-MOF template, which was transformed into N- and C-doped bimetallic phosphides via high-temperature phosphating. The CoP/Cu3P@NC-based ZAB exhibits remarkable performance with an open-circuit voltage of 1.50 V, a peak power density of 215 mW cm−2, and a specific capacity of 691 mA h gzn−1, outperforming conventional Pt/C-based ZABs. The catalyst maintained 93.5% of its initial activity after 300 h of cycling, demonstrating its excellent long-term stability. Furthermore, CoP/Cu3P@NC was applied in flexible ZABs, achieving a power density of 74 mW cm−2 and showing stable performance under various bending conditions. The superior performance is attributed to the synergistic effects of Co and Cu, optimized structural properties, and high porosity, enhancing mass transfer and oxygen activation. These results suggest that CoP/Cu3P@NC is a highly promising ORR catalyst for next-generation ZABs, offering both high efficiency and durability in flexible and conventional energy storage applications.

Optimized bimetallic nickel-iron phosphides with rich defects as enhanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction

Wen-Kun Gao,Jing-Qi Chi,Zhong-Bing Wang,Jia-Hui Lin,Da-Peng Liu,Jing-Bin Zeng,Jian-Feng Yu,Lei Wang,Yong-Ming Chai,Bin Dong

Exploring low-cost and outstanding bimetallic phosphides to substitute noble metals as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media is essential for renewable energy technologies. Herein, bimetallic nickel-iron phosphides nanoparticles (P-NiFe-800 NPs) with rich defects have been synthesized through gas annealing at 800 °C and phosphorization using uniform nickel-iron nanocubes (NiFe NCs) as precursor. At optimized calcination temperature, the obtained P-NiFe-800 NPs are composed of uniform nanoparticles with the rough surface, which suggests the larger surface area and more exposed rich active sites than other samples for OER. The introduction of P element to binary nickel-iron metals can optimize the crystalline and electronic structures of NiFe NCs and thus enhance electrocatalytic properties . Owing to the distinct morphological structure and synergistic effect between nickel-iron and phosphorus, P-NiFe-800 NPs demonstrate superior electrocatalytic activities for OER with lower overpotential of 270.1 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , smaller Tafel slope of 39 mV dec −1 , lower electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) value, bigger determined double-layer capacitance (C dl ) of 2130 uF cm −2 and prominent stability than NiFe NCs, NiFe-600 NPs, NiFe-700 NPs, NiFe-800 NPs, NiFe-900 NPs, P-NiFe NCs, P-NiFe-600 NPs, P-NiFe-700 NPs and P-NiFe-900 NPs. The optimized phosphorization is helpful for fabricating the bimetallic phosphides as efficient catalysts for OER.

Crystalline CoP@ Amorphous WP2 Coaxial Nanowire Arrays as Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Water Splitting

Xinyue Wei,Linyin Huang,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Yanning Qu,Xiaoya Yuan,Jianlong Wen,Qingmei Su,Fangyou Meng,Gaohui Du,Bingshe Xu,Kai Wang

The crystalline CoP@ amorphous WP 2 core–shell nanowire arrays are oriented grown on the Ni foam (CoP@WP 2 /NF). The amorphous WP 2 shell provides more active sites, and the interface charge coupling accelerates the kinetic of the catalytic reaction, making the CoP@WP 2 /NF catalysts excellent activity. In acidic, only 13 and 97 mV overpotentials are needed to reach 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, which are the lowest overpotentials among all reported Transition metal phosphide (TMP) catalysts, of course, much lower than that of the Pt/C catalyst (31 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , 120 mV at 100 mA cm −2 ). In alkaline, the Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials at 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 are 68 and 136 mV, respectively, which are also lower than that of most reported TMPs catalysts. The CoP@WP 2 /NF catalysts also show excellent Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline, and its OER overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 is only 254 mV. The voltage of the CoP@WP 2 /NF-2h‖CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h cell is only 1.37 V at 10 mA cm −2 , which is even lower than that of Pt/C‖Ru 2 O cell (1.52 V). Specially, when the current density is greater than 150 mA cm −2 , the energy consumption advantage of the CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h‖CoP@WP 2 /NF-2 h cell is more obvious.

Atomic Interface Catalytically Synthesizing SnP/CoP Hetero-Nanocrystals within Dual-Carbon Hybrids for Ultrafast Lithium-Ion Batteries

Chen Hu,Yanjie Hu,Aiping Chen,Xuezhi Duan,Hao Jiang,Chunzhong Li

Tin phosphides are attractive anode materials for ultrafast lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their ultrahigh Li-ion diffusion capability and large theoretical-specific capacity. However, difficulties in synthesis and large size enabling electrochemical irreversibility impede their applications. Herein, an in situ catalytic phosphorization strategy is developed to synthesize SnP/CoP hetero-nanocrystals within reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-coated carbon frameworks, in which the SnP relative formation energy is significantly decreased according to density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The optimized hybrids exhibit ultrafast charge/discharge capability (260 mA·h·g −1 at 50 A·g − 1 ) without capacity fading (645 mA·h·g − 1 at 2 A·g − 1 ) through 1500 cycles. The lithiation/delithiation mechanism is disclosed, showing that the 4.0 nm sized SnP/CoP nanocrystals possess a very high reversibility and that the previously formed metallic Co of CoP at a relatively high potential accelerates the subsequent reaction kinetics of SnP, hence endowing them with ultrafast charge/discharge capability, which is further verified by the relative dynamic current density distributions according to the finite element analysis.

Porous bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide nanofoam for efficient and stable oxygen evolution catalysis

Shanfu Sun,Ming Zheng,Pengfei Cheng,Fugui Wu,Luping Xu

Developing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with high activity and long-term stability is critical to achieving efficient hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Herein, a porous bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide (CoFe-P) nanofoam is synthesized via a novel one-pot glucose-blowing followed by oxidization and then phosphidization process. The CoFe-P nanofoam presents a porous nanostructure which contributes to contact with electrolytes and release of generated gas during electrocatalytic reactions. As OER catalysts in alkaline, the bimetallic porous CoFe-P nanofoam exhibit a lower overpotential (258 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) as well as outstanding stability (70 h@100 mA cm −2 ), which surpasses the RuO 2 and is comparable to many high-performance Co and Fe-based catalysts. It is demonstrated that the surface of CoFe-P undergo a reconstruction process and form new high active (Co x Fe 1−x )OOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the elevated activity is caused by the bimetal Co and Fe optimizing the d -band center ( E d ) energy levels and thus balancing the adsorption–desorption capacities for OER intermediates. This work through constructing porous bimetallic nanofoam offers a feasible strategy to facilitate the reaction activity and prolong the long-term stability of OER.

Hierarchical CoP@Ni2P core–shell nanosheets for ultrahigh energy density asymmetric supercapacitors

Liang Jiang,Ming Yan,Lin Sun,Yu Liu,Hongye Bai,Weidong Shi

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) as advanced electrode materials for supercapacitors (SCs) have received great attention due to their excellent redox activity, high electrical conductivity and metalloid feature. In this work, we successfully synthesized hierarchical core–shell CoP/Ni2P nanosheets (NSs) on carbon paper through a facile deposition and phosphating method. The optimized hierarchical core–shell CoP@Ni2P nanosheet electrode shows a high specific capacitance of 2644 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1. Meanwhile, three-dimensional (3D) α-Fe2O3 grown on carbon paper was also synthesized as a negative material by a hydrothermal and annealing treatment method, which manifests excellent performance of 539.2 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. Besides, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) was assembled, using CoP/Ni2P nanosheets as the positive electrode and α-Fe2O3 as the negative electrode in 3 M KOH electrolyte, which exhibits an excellent energy density of 48.5 W h kg−1 at 793 W kg−1 and a capacity retention rate of 98.8% after 10 000 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performance and outstanding cycling stability of the asymmetric supercapacitor show its great potential application in future energy storage devices.

MoP assists the promotion on Fe2P and FeN4 for oxygen reduction and zinc-air battery

Zhiwen Li,Hezhen Wang,Yan Xie,Yifei Zhang,Jianxin Gao,Yinghao Xu,Li Chen,Liangliang Xu,Erdong Wang,Gao Li

It is of great significance but remains challenging to simultaneously development cost-effective and efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in both alkaline and acidic solutions. In current work, a multi-component synergism system is developed, which is comprised of molybdenum phosphide (MoP) shell onto iron phosphide clusters anchored on carbon matrixes that embedded with numerous FeN 4 species (MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 ). The optimized MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 electrocatalyst delivers a synergistic enhancement in both alkaline and acidic ORR performances: E 1/2 : 0.885 V (0.1 M KOH electrolyte) and E 1/2 : 0.742 V (0.1 M HClO 4 electrolyte). Furthermore, the equipped zinc-air batteries (ZABs) of MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 exhibit a power density of 140.6 mW cm −2 @219.6 mA cm −2 , which surpasses the corresponding Fe 2 P-FeN 4 and commercial Pt/C catalyst. The computational calculations reveal that MoP/Fe 2 P-FeN 4 shows a relative increase of d -band center closer to Fermin level than Fe 2 P-FeN 4 , tuning the rate-determining step to conversion of *O to *OOH intermediate, thus significant reducing the energy barrier and enhancing ORR activity. This strategy opens new opportunities to rational design of Fe-based nanocomposites for stimulated ORR and further ZAB activities.

A structurally controllable flower-shaped phosphide derived from metal-organic frameworks for high-performance supercapacitors

Yanling Zhu,Jianhao Lao,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun,Qiwei Shao,Yong Luo,Songwen Fang,Yue Chen,Chuyu Yu,Yongjin Zou

In this study, the flower-shaped phosphide (C/NiCoP) has been synthesized by the solvothermal method and phosphorization. The results indicate that the morphology of the samples can be modulated by varying the metal ratio of the precursor (nickel and cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks, NiCo-MOFs). The SEM and TEM analysis prove that the obtained C/NiCoP has a very complete flower-like structure, when the molar ratio of nickel and cobalt is 1: 1. The electrochemical test shows that the specific capacitance of C/NiCoP is 773 C/g at 1 A/g. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ACS) consisting of activated carbon (AC) and C/NiCoP offers a high energy density of 62.4 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 850.0 W kg −1 . The exceptional electrochemical performance is attributed to this unique structure, which exposes more active sites. Additionally, many voids are generated on the surface of C/NiCoP along with the Kirkendall effect, allowing for rapid ion transmission to enhance the Faraday reaction between the electrode and the electrolyte.

Interface engineering of three-phase nickel–cobalt sulfide/nickel phosphide/iron phosphide heterostructure for enhanced water splitting and urea electrolysis

Longqian Wang,Pan Wang,Xin Xue,Dan Wang,Huishan Shang,Yafei Zhao,Bing Zhang

Rational designing efficient transition metal-based multifunctional electrocatalysts is highly desirable for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water cracking. Herein, a self-supported three-phase heterostructure electrocatalyst of nickel–cobalt sulfide/nickel phosphide/iron phosphide (CoNi 5 S 8 -Ni 2 P-FeP 2 ) was prepared by a two-step gas-phase sulfurization/phosphorization strategy. The heterostructure in CoNi 5 S 8 -Ni 2 P-FeP 2 provides a favorable interfacial environment for electron transfer and synergistic interaction of multiphase active components, while the introduced electronegative P/S not only serves as a carrier for proton capture in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process but also promotes the metal-electron outflow, which in turn accelerates the generation of high-valent Ni 3+ species to enhance the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). As expected, CoNi 5 S 8 -Ni 2 P-FeP 2 reveals excellent multifunctional electrocatalytic properties. An overpotential of 35/215 mV is required to reach 10 mA cm −2 for HER/OER. More encouragingly, a current of 100 mA cm −2 requires only 1.36 V for UOR with CoNi 5 S 8 -Ni 2 P-FeP 2 as anode, which is much lower as compared to the OER (1.50 V). Besides, a two-electrode water/urea electrolyzer assembled based on CoNi 5 S 8 -Ni 2 P-FeP 2 has a voltage of only 1.59/1.48 V when the system reaches 50 mA cm −2 . This work provides a new idea for the design of energy-efficient water/urea-assisted water-splitting multifunctional catalysts with multi-component heterostructure synergistic interface engineering.

Robust NiCoP@FeP derived from Prussian blue analog for efficient overall water splitting

Yaoyao Pan,Xiaoyu Huang,Yin Huang,Congyi Sheng,Xiuhua Wang

The design of efficient, stable, and non-noble metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts remains a great challenge. The synergistic effect can adjust the local electronic structure to improve the catalytic performance. In this work, an Fe Prussian blue analog was grown in situ on the surface of NiCo precursor nanoneedles at room temperature, and then one-dimensional unique NiCoP@FeP hierarchical nanocomposites were constructed by subsequent phosphating. The optimized NiCoP@FeP with strong electronic interactions showed a low overpotential of 268 mV at 50 mA cm−2 for the OER and 75 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the HER. Moreover, for water splitting, the bifunctional catalyst required only a low cell voltage of 1.58 V to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with excellent durability. This work provides a new synthesis strategy to construct non-noble metal heterostructure bifunctional electrocatalysts using the Prussian blue analog in the future.
