N,P-Codoped Carbon Layer Coupled with MoP Nanoparticles as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Shuai Wang,Jia Wang,Ping Li,Zexing Wu,Xien Liu

Efficient electrocatalyst plays a significant role on the development of hydrogen energy. In this work, an N,P-codoped carbon layer coupled with MoP nanoparticles (MoP/NPCs) was prepared through a facile high-temperature pyrolysis treatment. The obtained MoP/NPCs presented efficient activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low onset potential of 90 mV, and a small Tafel slope (71 mV dec−1), as well as extraordinary stability in acidic electrolyte. This work provides a new facile strategy for the design and synthesis of sustainable and effective molybdenum-based electrocatalysts as alternatives to non-Pt catalysts for HER.Keywords:electrocatalysts;hydrogen evolution reaction;carbon layer;molybdenum phosphide

Molybdenum Phosphide Nanostructures Connected to Ti3C2Tx via P−O Bond for Rapid Lithium-Ion Storage

Zhen Wang,Yunhao Wu,Jianjian Zhong,Jianling Li

Two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride MXenes have become a hot topic in the field of lithium-ion energy storage due to their unique surface chemistry and excellent electronic conductivity. However, electrodes made of multilayer MXenes suffer from low capacity, poor cycling performance, and slow lithiation kinetics. In this paper, the MoP2@Ti3C2Tx composite was prepared by adsorbing Mo cations on the surface of Ti3C2Tx followed by phosphatization. The uniformly distributed MoP2 nanostructure effectively increases the layer spacing, enlarges the specific surface area, and improves the structural stability of the material. At the same time, MoP2 and Ti3C2Tx are connected by a P−O bond, which accelerates the diffusion and migration of lithium ions and the charge transfer, and the strong covalent Ti−O−P bond can cause rapid charge transfer and stabilize the structure of the material. The electrochemical activity of MoP2 nanostructures also provides more active sites for lithium ions. The presence of the lamellar structure of Ti3C2Tx also inhibits to some extent the expansion of the transition metal phosphide volume with the cycling process, thus realizing more excellent lithium storage capacity. 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx material has a high reversible capacity of 165.7 mAh g−1 (172% improvement over the original material) at a current density of 3000 mA g−1. The assembled 1/2 MoP2@Ti3C2Tx//AC Li-ion hybrid capacitor LIC has 85.5% capacity retention after cycling at a current density of 1500 mA g−1. The ability of the assembled full battery to illuminate light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs further confirms that the electrochemical reliability of the device meets the requirements of real-world applications. The results demonstrate that the strategy of constructing in situ-grown MoP2 nanostructures can effectively improve MXene high-energy-density applications in lithium-ion energy storage.

Tungsten-decorated MoP nanobelts for boosted hydrogen production

Dezhi Wang,Yao Lu,Kangyan Lv,Zhuangzhi Wu

To further improve the electrochemical catalytic performance of MoP for hydrogen generation, a tungsten decoration strategy is proposed in this work, and the effect of preparation temperature was also investigated. It is found that the decoration of W can significantly enhance the electron transfer ability and increase the amount of active sites, and the optimized catalyst can be obtained at 700 °C over the Mo-W-P-700 catalyst, which exhibits the best catalytic performance with a small Tafel slope of 53 mV dec-1. This decoration strategy can be widely applied in other transition metal compounds to achieve further performance improvements.

Hierarchical MoS2@MoP core–shell heterojunction electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction over a broad pH range

Aiping Wu,Chungui Tian,Haijing Yan,Yanqing Jiao,Qing Yan,Guoyu Yang,Honggang Fu

A low-cost catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a broad pH range is highly desired to meet the practical needs in different areas. In this study, hierarchical flower-like MoS2@MoP core–shell heterojunctions (HF-MoSP) are designed as a promising catalyst for HER over a broad pH range. The materials are obtained by the controllable phosphidation of the hierarchical MoS2 flower (HF-MoS2) composed of thin silk belt-like sheets. The phosphidation degree, P/S ratio and work function (WF) of HF-MoSP can be tuned easily over broad range by changing the phosphidation temperature. Under optimized condition, HF-MoSP exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activity for HER with a low onset overpotential of 29 mV and η of 108 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and retains its good activity for 30 h. In addition, the catalyst shows excellent activity in 1 M KOH with an onset overpotential of 42 mV and η of 119 mV at 10 mA cm−2. The catalysts also exhibit obvious activity in neutral, weak acid and weak alkaline conditions. The good performance is relative to the synergy of the MoP shell and MoS2 core and the high WF of HF-MoSP close to Pt, and the large SBET of HF-MoSP benefited from the hierarchical structure. This study represents the construction of the core–shell heterojunction and provides a new way to provide the low-cost and high-performance catalyst for HER.

In-situ transformation into MoP/MoS2 heterogeneous structure with rich S-vacancy enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Juan Du,Qiao Han,Cheng Liu,Hongda Wu,Lufan zheng,Zhanxu Yang

The surface modification strategy has broken through the restriction of hydrogen evolution activity caused by low conductivity inert surfaces of MoS 2 during hydrogen evolution reaction . In this work, a new strategy for regulating the interface structure between MoS 2 and MoP using sulfur vacancy is proposed, which is derived from the synthesis of molybdenum disulfide nanotubes with rich S-vacancy (Sv-MoS 2 ) by reduction. Subsequently, Sv-MoS 2 was phosphated by introducing a P source, and the obtained (MoP/Sv-MoS 2 -8) composite. The introduction of P atoms provides more active sites for hydrogen adsorption and desorption by replacing S atoms to form (Mo-P) covalent bonds , further increase the number of S vacancies to activate the inert interface. The synthesized MoP/Sv-MoS 2 -8 has excellent catalytic activity and good cyclic stability, showing a lower Tafel slope of 60 mV·dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , and no potential attenuation after the cyclic stability test for 24 h. The excellent HER performance is mainly due to the synergistic effect of P atom doping and S vacancy, which greatly reduces the energy barrier of the Volmer step and the adsorption/desorption of the H* intermediate step.

Highly efficient nanosized MoS2/MoP heterocatalyst for enhancing hydrogen evolution reaction over a wide pH range

Mingyuan Zhu,Lijun Yu,Simiao Sha,Riyue Ge,Chi Cheng,Liming Dai,Sean Li,Bin Liu,Zhixue Qu,Wenxian Li

Energy consumption associated with the catalysts contributes partly to the high ohmic resistance arising from the low conductivity of the catalyst and poor charge transfer between nanoparticles, which has been difficult to study due to the complicated nanostructured framework of the catalysts. We constructed a novel heterostructure electrocatalyst (MoS 2 /MoP@NC) composed of nanosized MoS 2 /MoP heterostructures anchoring on hierarchical N-doped carbon for smoothing electron transfer in boosting hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). With the merits of large surface area, rapid charge transfer, and optimized electronic structure induced by charge transfer across the sufficient interface, the optimal MoS 2 /MoP@NC (MoSP) catalyst shows a competitive overpotential of 140 (0.5 M H 2 SO 4 ), 76 (1.0 M KOH), and 103 mV (0.5 M NaCl &1.0 M KOH) at 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Raman experiment and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the formation of Mo-S-Mo bonds between MoS 2 and MoP, which favor enhancing the Femi level to facilitate the electron transfer, therefore regulating the electronic structure for the optimization of adsorption energy of hydrogen intermediate. Based on the experimental results, we constructed an energy consumption model of catalysts, where energy consumption comes from three aspects. The heterostructure design decreases the energy consumption of the catalysts greatly compared to the single-phase Mo-based catalyst of MoS 2 (78.0%) and MoP (45.2%) in alkaline electrolytes.

Nest-Like Molybdenum Diphosphide-Carbon Nanotube Nanocomposite for Lithium-Ion Storage

Chan Ke,Yanpeng Dou,Ziqiang Cheng,Gengchang Lai,Zunbin Duan,Xingchen He,Yi Luo,Zhimin Liu,Lijia Wan,Xue-Feng Yu,Jiahong Wang

Metal phosphides (MPs) with high theoretical capacity and fast kinetics are considered useful anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Phosphorus-rich MPs are more attractive than phosphorus-lean ones for the preparation of lithium battery anodes because the capacity of MPs is usually proportional to the content of the phosphorus component. In this work, we synthesized a nest-like molybdenum diphosphide-carbon nanotube (MoP2–CNT) nanocomposite for a high-capacity and long-term cycle-stable anode. Due to the nanoscale size and carbon nanotube cross-linking, the nest-like MoP2–CNT possessed a short diffusion path of lithium ions, a good conductive network, and a permeable buffer layer. As a result, after 500 cycles, the specific capacity reached 504.7 mA h g–1 at 1.0 A g–1 and 310.6 mA h g–1 at 4.0 A g–1. Superior electrochemical performances were also achieved at high-mass-loading MoP2–CNT electrodes. In addition, the full cell composed of the MoP2–CNT anode and LiCoO2 cathode also exhibited an energy density of 378.2 Wh kg–1 and excellent rate and cycling performances, indicating the potential application of the MoP2–CNT nanocomposite. The above superior electrochemical performances demonstrated that the phosphorus-rich composites were promising candidates for the preparation of a high-capacity LIB anode.

Distinctive MoS2-MoP nanosheet structures anchored on N-doped porous carbon support as a catalyst to enhance the electrochemical hydrogen production

Yaoxia Yang,Xuqin An,Mi Kang,Fengyao Guo,Lan Zhang,Qingtao Wang,Dongfei Sun,Yuan Liao,Zhiwang Yang,Ziqiang Lei

The construction of excellently performing electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a low-cost and economical strategy is still struggling with an enormous challenge in electrochemical water splitting. In this work, a novel N-doped porous carbon substrate constructed heterojunction electrocatalyst (MoS2-MoP/NC) was fabricated by a simple and facile method. Based on the electronic interaction and synergistic effect between MoS2 and MoP phases, the fabricated MoS2-MoP/NC heterojunction catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic ability. In addition, the N-doped porous carbon substrate had a good charge/mass-transfer ability, which could effectively facilitate electronic transmission or prevent the aggregation of MoS2-MoP nanosheets and improve the catalytic activity. The heterojunction catalyst significantly improved HER activity with a low overpotential of 83 and 103 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in a 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4 and Tafel slope of 59.38 and 59.20 mV dec−1 for HER, respectively. This work provides a simple, less expensive and efficient approach for constructing high-performance heterojunction catalysts for HER.

Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance of Graphdiyne-Alkyne Phosphating Mo–Metal-Organic Frameworks Heterojunction

Meijuan Ding,Mei Li,Jingzhi Wang,Zhiliang Jin

Herein, the application of graphdiyne (GDY) in photocatalytic splitting of water and hydrogen evolution is explored. In this article, GDY is prepared by ball milling using calcium carbide as raw material, and it is compounded with phosphating Mo–metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), to explore the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance and hydrogen evolution mechanism of composite catalysts. In the results, it is shown that the P–Mo–MOFs (PMF)/G-25 composite photocatalyst has the best hydrogen evolution activity, and the hydrogen evolution rate is highest at pH = 9, reaching 1668.5 μmol g −1 h −1 . Through the four-cycle hydrogen evolution cycle stability test, the PMF/G-25 composites still has good hydrogen evolution stability. It is shown that the combination of phosphating Mo–MOFs and GDY can enhance the hydrogen evolution activity and has excellent hydrogen evolution performance. In the Mott–Schottky test, it is found that PMF and GDY are n-type semiconductors. The conduction and valence values are −0.56 and 1.10 eV for GDY, and −0.68 and 0.97 eV for PMF, respectively. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is analyzed, and it is speculated that S-Scheme heterojunction is formed between PMF and GDY to further promote photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Tingting Liu,Heng Liu,Xiuju Wu,Yanli Niu,Bomin Feng,Wei Li,Weihua Hu,Chang Ming Li

Molybdenum (Mo) based materials including its phosphides, carbides, nitrides , oxides, dichalcogenides and metallic alloys have received particular interest in recent years for sustainable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis . In this study, a novel Mo 2 C/MoP hybrid nanoparticle embedded N, P co-doped carbon nanofibers on carbon fiber paper (Mo 2 C-MoP NPC/CFP-800) is successfully prepared as a highly efficient hierarchical HER electrocatalyst . Benefitting from its structural advantages and compositional merits, this Mo 2 C-MoP NPC/CFP-800 electrocatalyst displays remarkable catalytic activity as well as excellent durability for HER. Only 85 and 146 mV overpotential is required to drive a HER current density of 10 mA cm −2 in acidic and alkaline solution, respectively. Remarkably, this electrocatalyst is also able to fulfill efficient HER even in seawater . Further, this work reveals that the Mo 2 C/MoP hybrid nanoparticle is superior to MoP nanoparticle under present system in HER electrocatalysis, which may offer valuable clues on further design and synthesis of HER electrocatalysts.

A separator-based lithium polysulfide recirculator for high-loading and high-performance Li–S batteries

Ming Li,Chao Wang,Lixiao Miao,Jingwei Xiang,Tanyuan Wang,Kai Yuan,Jitao Chen,Yunhui Huang

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising for the next-generation energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the shuttle effect and the passive layer between the separator and electrode still affect the cycling stability and coulombic efficiency seriously. Herein, we develop a 10 μm-thick rGO (reduced graphene oxide) and molybdenum phosphide (MoP) composite coating layer on a Celgard separator to improve the electrochemical performance of Li–S batteries. The introduction of such a MoP/rGO coating layer on the separator not only impedes the diffusion of polysulfides to the anode but also improves the sulfur utilization. In particular, the 10 nm MoP nanoparticles are very efficient for the polysulfide adsorption. Compared to the pristine Celgard separator, superior electrochemical performance is obtained in both coin cells and pouch cells with the MoP/rGO coated separator. High areal capacity (∼3 mA h cm−2), good rate performance, and long cycle life (300 cycles) are attained under a sulfur loading of 3.88 mg cm−2. The capacity decay rate is as low as 0.045% per cycle over 300 cycles. In addition, the pouch cells made by the modified separator with a high sulfur loading of 4.6 mg cm−2 achieve good electrochemical performance. At 0.1C, the initial discharge capacity is 1083 mA h g−1, and still remains at 759 mA h g−1 after 120 cycles. The result reveals the potential practical use of this MoP/rGO coated separator for Li–S batteries.

One-pot synthesis of N and P Co-doped carbon layer stabilized cobalt-doped MoP 3D porous structure for enhanced overall water splitting

Dongfeng Sun,Songmin Lin,Yuan Yu,Shengwei Liu,Fangyou Meng,Gaohui Du,Bingshe Xu

Transition metal phosphides are novel electrocatalysts that can be used to replace noble metals for the electrochemical production of hydrogen. In this work, N and P co-doped carbon-coated cobalt-doped molybdenum phosphide (CoMoP@N,P-C) nanoparticles are explored as electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The presence of a unique three-dimensional (3D) porous structure in CoMoP@N,P-C offers abundant catalytic active sites for the penetration of the electrolyte solution, thereby facilitating the transfer of ions. In addition, cobalt doped into MoP increases the catalytic activity, and N and P co-doped carbon improves the electrical conductivity of the carbon matrix. Subsequently, the synergy between CoMoP cores and N, P-C shells enhances the total hydrolysis performance of the electrocatalyst in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) processes. At a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH, HER and OER overpotential of the CoMoP@N, P-C are 152 mV and 296 mV, respectively. Moreover, the cell voltage of CoMoP@N, P-C as a bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting is 1.62 V (at 10 mA/cm 2 ), which is close to that of the full noble-metal electrode (RuO 2 || Pt/C, 1.58 V). Overall, the CoMoP@N, P-C bifunctional catalyst shows great potential for replacing noble-metal electrodes in water splitting applications.
