With the increasing global interest in renewable energy, hydrogen production through water electrolysis has emerged as a promising method for clean energy generation. However, the efficiency of water splitting, particularly in acidic conditions, is limited by the need for high-performance electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, Co-doped Fe 3 P/N-doped carbon composites have been prepared fast by microwave assistance with enhanced electrocatalytic activity and stability in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The doping of Co facilitated the transfer of electrons from Fe to Co, modified the electronic structure of metal active sites, thereby enhancing catalyst performance. The optimized Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 P x @NC catalyst exhibited superior HER and OER activity, with low overpotentials (91 and 251 mV for HER and OER, respectively) and Tafel slopes (60.3 and 55.3 mV/dec for HER and OER, respectively), and demonstrated excellent stability. In addition, the catalyst showed competitive performance in a two-electrode system for overall water splitting, achieving a high current density at low voltage. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of metal phosphides and nitrogen-doped carbon, providing an efficient and cost-effective approach to bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting applications with high performance and durability.

Developing stable, highly active, and economical non-precious metal catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been highly demanded in the new energy field since it can meet the industrial demands of large-scale electrocatalytic water splitting . A novel FeP/Ni 2 P/Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 /C (FeNiP–FeNi–C) nanofiber was prepared by electrospinning and high-temperature phosphating. Notably, the good dispersion of FeP, Ni 2 P, and FeNi alloy nanoparticles in the nanocarbon fiber greatly increased the number of electroactive sites, and the synergistic effect between the FeP/Ni 2 P heterogeneous interface and FeNi alloy significantly improved the inherent activity of each site. Moreover, the carbon nanofibers enhanced the long-term durability of the catalyst by preventing the corrosion of the FeP, Ni 2 P, and FeNi alloy particles. Therefore, the optimal FeNiP–FeNi–C catalyst revealed exceptionally high OER activity, with overpotentials of 364 mV and 236 mV at 50 mA cm −2 and 10 mA cm −2 respectively, and the slope of Tafel of 61.00 mV·dec −1 . This catalyst performs significantly better than commercial RuO 2 catalysts in alkaline electrolytes . The results of this study offer a novel perspective for the mass production of non-precious metal OER high-efficiency electrocatalysts .

Graphical A passive catalyst? A Fe 2 O 3 shell was grown onto a ZnO core to protect the surface from corrosion and increase the charge-separation efficiency. PH 3 treatment onto the core–shell nanowire creates a Fe 2 PO 5 with dual functionality: a catalyst and passivating overlayer. Zinc oxide is regarded as a promising candidate for application in photoelectrochemical water oxidation due to its higher electron mobility. However, its instability under alkaline conditions limits its application in a practical setting. Herein, we demonstrate an easily achieved wet-chemical route to chemically stabilize ZnO nanowires (NWs) by protecting them with a thin layer Fe 2 O 3 shell. This shell, in which the thickness can be tuned by varying reaction times, forms an intact interface with ZnO NWs, thus protecting ZnO from corrosion in a basic solution. The reverse energetic heterojunction nanowires are subsequently activated by introducing an amorphous iron phosphate, which substantially suppressed surface recombination as a passivation layer and improved photoelectrochemical performance as a potential catalyst. Compared with pure ZnO NWs (0.4 mA cm −2 ), a maximal photocurrent of 1.0 mA cm −2 is achieved with ZnO/Fe 2 O 3 core–shell NWs and 2.3 mA cm −2 was achieved for the PH 3 -treated NWs at 1.23 V versus RHE. The PH 3 low-temperature treatment creates a dual function, passivation and catalyst layer (Fe 2 PO 5 ), examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, TEM, photoelectrochemical characterization, and impedance measurements. Such a nano-composition design offers great promise to improve the overall performance of the photoanode material.

In this study, the low-cost preparation of iron phosphide by using pickling waste liquor as the initial material was performed through a two-step reaction. The degradation of Orange G was evaluated using iron phosphide coupled with peroxymonosulfate to construct a catalytic system. The removal efficiencies of Orange G and total organic carbon reached 97.4 and 58.4% at 60 min, respectively. Iron phosphide has dual-catalysis centers for the activation of PMS. Multiple free radicals (e.g., SO 4 •− , HO • , SO 5 •− , and O 2 •− ) and singlet oxygen were involved in the pollutant degradation , of which sulfate radicals played the main role. The iron phosphide catalyst exhibited excellent recycling stability, and its catalytic efficiency reached 95% after five cycles. In summary, the Fe 2 P/PMS system—as a Fenton-like catalytic system—has certain advantages, including low cost, high efficiency, sufficient reusability, and good stability, all of which are favorable for its practical application.

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have favorable characteristics in terms of cell voltage and cost efficiency, making them a promising technology for grid-scale energy storage. The rational design of suitable electrode materials on a theoretical basis, aiming at high power and energy density, is of paramount importance to bring this battery technology to the practical market. In this paper, a series of iron-based compounds with different non-metal anions are selectively synthesized to investigate the nature of kinetic differences induced by anionic modulation. A combination of experimental characterization and theoretical calculation reveals that iron phosphide, with its moderate adsorption energy ( E a ) and lowest diffusion barrier ( E b ), exhibits the best cycling and rate properties at low electrochemical polarization, which is related to the narrow Δ d-p band center gap that facilitates ion transfer. In addition, the optimization of the electrolyte formula results in the carbon-supported iron phosphide anode running stably over 2000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 and exhibiting a high rate capacity of 81.1 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 . The superior electrochemical properties are attributed to the robust KF-rich solid electrolyte interphase formed by the highly compatible KFSI in ethylene carbonate (EC)/diethyl carbonate (DEC) configuration.

Hydrogen production via water electrolysis has garnered significant attention as a pivotal technology for green energy conversion. In this work, cheap metal ions copper and iron are used as catalyst raw materials to develop high efficiency and low cost HER catalyst. Copper-doped iron phosphide supported on carbon paper (Cu-FeP/CP) is synthesized via a simple two-step process involving hydrothermal growth followed by high-temperature phosphidation. The morphology and electrochemical performance of iron phosphide catalysts with controlled copper doping are investigated. A nano-needle-like Cu-FeP/CP structure with 3% Cu doping exhibits a high surface area, providing abundant active sites, while Cu-induced charge redistribution and Fe-Cu synergy further enhance its intrinsic catalytic activity. HER catalytic performances results reveal Cu-FeP/CP-3% electrode exhibits low overpotentials of 71 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 123 mV in 1 M KOH to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , along with small Tafel slopes of 49 mV dec −1 and 72 mV dec −1 , respectively. Additionally, Cu-FeP/CP-3% shows low charge transfer resistance and stable HER performance over 24 h. The result provides new insights into the design and fabrication of highly efficient and cost-effective HER catalysts. Graphical

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton is a promising wastewater treatment technology that can efficiently degrade organic pollutants without secondary pollution. However, challenges persist in developing streamlined synthesis methods for high-performance, cost-effective cathode catalysts. Herein, hierarchical iron phosphides@hard carbon composites with porous heterostructures were engineered through a synergistic approach involving high-temperature calcination, chemical activation, and iron phosphide doping. It features effective doping of FeP nanoparticles, a relatively high specific surface area, and abundant catalytically active sites. The optimal catalyst achieved 95.4 % phenol degradation within 180 min under neutral conditions, coupled with 61.4 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. Notably, the system maintained 90.0 % phenol removal efficiency over 20 recycling times, far exceeding some reported cathodes. A key advancement lies in the catalyst's broad pH adaptability (pH 3–9), effectively eliminating the stringent pH limitations (typically pH 2–4) inherent to traditional homogeneous electro-Fenton systems. The superior performance of the composite catalyst demonstrates the viability of biomass-derived hard carbon for wastewater treatment and offers a novel reference for its application in the realm of electro-Fenton degradation.

The widespread application of Fe-based heterogeneous Fenton in water treatment is hindered by two main challenges: the inefficiency of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle and the requirement of acidic conditions. In this study, combining schwertmannite with iron phosphide (Sch/FeP) via pre-adding FeP in the formation process of Sch could enhance the Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversion and self-producing acidic environment by SO42– substitution. Specifically, the inclusion of FeP in the Sch/FeP composite markedly increased the content of ≡Fe(II) species, thereby improving the activation of H2O2 to produce substantial quantities of •OH and •O2– radicals. Sch/FeP-driven heterogeneous Fenton exhibited high total organic carbon (TOC) removal (∼60%) and utilization efficiency of H2O2 (100%) after 20 min. Furthermore, Sch/FeP exhibited excellent degradation performance across a broad pH range (2–10), which could be attributed to the SO42– substitution reaction. This study not only addresses critical challenges in heterogeneous Fenton processes but also provides a novel strategy for modifying sulfate minerals to enhance their environmental applicability.
