The bifunctional biochar(N/CaO/BC) was prepared by a simple high temperature calcination using melamine and biomass material of sugarcane bagasse and agricultural wastes eggshell. Its structure and properties were analyzed by SEM, XRD, BET, and XPS. The adsorption capacity was evaluated in the phosphorus solutions. The effect of initial pH, concentration and temperature on adsorption were investigated. Nano-CaO were disperse evenly on the surface of Biochar, resulting a special specific surface area and porous structures. It has a rich nitrogen and CaO and the adsorption capacity could obtain 251.16 mg P/g at 300 K over a broad range of pH. The electrostatic force caused by C = NH + and precipitation reaction caused by CaO are the main driving forces of phosphorus removal and it exhibited a good P adsorption selectivity. P-rich N/CaO/BC contain P, N, C, Ca elements, which could provide nutrients to the soil and promotes the growth of crops. The dual-functionalization strategy of biochar provides a new way for the reuse of waste biomass and a new method for P utilization as resource in agricultural production.

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater, which contain large amounts of P by biochar can not only purify sewage, but promotes the reuse of P resources. The traditional enhancement of biochar's adsorption capacity through metal ion modification, such as with Ca 2+ , has shown promising results but is often hindered by high preparation costs. In this innovative work, we present a novel approach to prepare Ca-laden biochar (label as Ca-PSB) using egg-shells as a sustainable and low-cost calcium source. The biochar was prepared by peanut shell through anaerobic pyrolysis for 2 h at 400 °C under N 2 atmosphere. Three kinds of Ca-PSB were prepared according to the content of modifier (CaCl 2 ). The physiochemical properties of the Ca-PSBs were more conducive to adsorption of P. The economic cost of preparing was evaluated. The pore parameters were changed after the Ca modification. Especially, specific surface area of Ca-PSBs were increased by 4.82 %−12.05 % than raw biochar. The P adsorption capacity of Ca-PSB was 111.34 %−114.34 % higher than that of raw biochar. Ca-laden biochar showed excellent P adsorption, due to the Ca and CaO x on the Ca-PSB surface reacted with PO 4 3- through hydrogen bonds or through stable inorganic precipitation. This work provides an inexpensive strategy for preparing biochar with high efficiency for phosphorus adsorption.

In this study, lanthanum-modified the shell–core magnetic nanocomposites with Fe 3 O 4 core and homogeneous mesoporous silica shell (La-SBA-15@Fe 3 O 4 -x) were prepared. The preparation, morphology, composition and magnetic properties of La-SBA-15@Fe 3 O 4 were investigated by TEM, SEM, XRD, VSM and BET. The results suggested that the SBA-15 have successfully encapsulated Fe 3 O 4 and the magnetic particles were decorated by lanthanum. The adsorption experiments were carried out to explore effect of La-SBA-15@Fe 3 O 4 on removal of phosphorus from aqueous solution. The kinetic study of adsorption process was investigated to describe the relationship between adsorption rate and adsorption equilibrium and the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were employed to illustrate adsorption isotherm.

Phosphorus removal has been explored for a long time, however sustainable phosphorus adsorption and recovery with adsorbents recycling is rarely reported. This work proposes a sustainable phosphorus recycling route with calcium-modified powdered activated carbon with chitosan (Ca-PAC-CTS). The morphology, functional groups and crystal structure of Ca-PAC-CTS were characterized. The maximum phosphorus adsorption capacity was 16.73 mg/g Ca-PAC-CTS with Langmuir model at 298 K. Stable phosphorus sorption on Ca-PAC-CTS could be observed at the large range of pH (4– 10) when coexisting with NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , Cl − and F − , except HCO 3 − . 98.95 % The recovery of adsorbed phosphorus could get to 98.95 % using 0.05 M sulfuric acid solution, and the phosphate adsorption efficiency through Ca-PAC-CTS remained to be more than 80 % after five adsorption-desorption cycles, suggesting that Ca-PAC-CTS was one of the promising adsorbents for sustainable removal and recovery of phosphorus in aqueous solution.

Water deterioration and eutrophication caused by phosphorus (P) contamination necessitates P removal from polluted water, and has been a research focus since the second half of last century. In this study, novel mesoporous micropheres based on silicon and calcium (Ca) was prepared as an adsorbent by direct pyrolysis to enrich and remove P. The maximum adsorption capacities of the prepared adsorbents were 356.34 and 496.73 mg g −1 P−PO 4 3− for potassium phosphate (K 3 PO 4 ) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH 2 PO 4 ) solutions, respectively, and adsorption equilibrium was attained rapidly in less than 30 min. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model adequately fit the adsorption process for K 3 PO 4 solution, while the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-first-order kinetic appropriately fit the KH 2 PO 4 solution. The adsorption of P was due to the reaction between Ca 2+ and PO 4 3− , forming different phosphates. Addition of interfering ions had no significant effect on the adsorption ability of the prepared adsorbents. The proposed adsorbent was successfully applied to remove P from real wastewater. Notably, this new Ca-modified mesoporous silicon micropheres is an excellent adsorbent for treating wastewater containing low P content, providing an effective approach for facile preparation of P adsorbents and exhibiting promising P removal from wastewater.

In this work, CaMgAl-layered double oxide/biochar (LDO@BC) composites were elaborated by hydrothermal coprecipitation and calcination for the efficient recovery of phosphate as well as the further application of the reclaimed composites as fertilizers. On the one hand, the appropriate selection of biochar derived from vinasses as the substrates could solve the limitations of LDO like low specific surface areas as well as poor dispersion. The obtained composites possess the ultrahigh specific surface area as high as 508.97 m 2 /g. Therefore, a maximum adsorption capacity of 153.64 mg/g is achieved. In addition, our composites are with fast adsorption rates that nearly 100 % phosphate could be removed within 60 s at a trace concentration owing to the large specific surface areas. On the other hand, the recovered adsorbents could be used as fertilizers because of the high contents of P, Ca and Mg elements. The phosphate-adsorbed LDO@BC (P-LDO@BC) demonstrated a positive fertilization effect, significantly accelerating plant growth with length increment by 0.75 times and mass increment by 2.09 times compared with the control groups. Thus, this work not only provides a new approach for waste vinasse utilization, but also presents a promising adsorbing material for phosphate recovery and reuse.

Freshwater sludge (FS) is daily produced from drinking water treatment plants in large quantities and mostly disposed of in landfills worldwide. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of reutilization of P-saturated FS and derived biochar (FBC) as soil amendments for resource recycling. The results indicate that FS pyrolyzed at 300 °C (FBC300) had the highest adsorption capacity (40.54 mgP/g), and the rate-limiting step of adsorption was film diffusion but gradually altered to intraparticle diffusion with increasing pyrolysis temperature. Adsorbed P primarily existed as stable P fractions (NaOH-P, HCl-P and residue-P) or speciations (AlPO 4 and hydroxyapatite based on X-ray absorption fine structure spectra), but NaOH-P was found to gradually transform into available P (AP) in amended soils with time, achieving continuous release of AP and also reducing P loss through surface run-off. This study offers a novel and feasible reutilization strategy of freshwater sludge as phosphorus adsorbents and subsequent soil amendments to achieve the “zero waste” goal.

In this study, waste corn cobs were oxidized and grafted with diethylenetriamine (DETA), which chelates a large amount of Fe 3+ . Then, nitrogen-doped zero-valent iron/biochar (ZVI/BC-N) was prepared using a simple carbothermal reduction method. ZVI/BC-N had a larger specific surface area and porous structure due to the irregular folding phenomenon on its surface caused by Fe and N codoping. At the same time, ZVI/BC-N contained more ZVI reactive crystals due to DETA chelation. The pseudo-second-order and Elovich models better describe the behavior of ZVI/BC and ZVI/BC-N in phosphorus adsorption, where the adsorption process was controlled by a combination of the reaction rate and diffusion. The isotherm and thermodynamic fitting results showed that the adsorption of phosphorus by ZVI/BC was a single-molecular-layer physical adsorption process, while ZVI/BC-N exhibited multimolecular layer chemisorption , and the maximum amounts of phosphorus adsorbed by ZVI/BC and ZVI/BC-N were 17.93 and 82.78 mg·g −1 , respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that both C N and C H on biochar were involved in the adsorption process, while the coordination between OH, C O and phosphate, the adsorption of ZVI and chemical processes were the main mechanisms of phosphorus removal. The stronger adsorption performance of ZVI/BC-N compared to ZVI/BC might be related to its high ZVI content and rich surface structure. This study aims to provide a method for the preparation of biochar composites with a high ZVI content through simple modifications and provide a new approach for the efficient removal of phosphorus from water.

The activated sludge-based biochar modified by metals performs well for the phosphate adsorbent. The cost of the modification materials and the follow-up treatment of the spent adsorbents are significant limits for the large-scale application of the developed adsorbent. In this study, wasted egg shells and oyster shells, rich in calcium (Ca), were employed to load Ca onto the surface of the activated sludge-based biochar. The results revealed that different forms of Ca on egg shell-modified activated sludge biochar (ESB) and oyster shell modified activated sludge biochar (OSB) induced different adsorption performances. ESB had a greater phosphate adsorption capacity than OSB, where the maximum adsorption capacities were 154.18 mg/g and 129.03 mg/g, respectively. The saturated biochar could slowly release phosphate at different levels of pH; in fact, the phosphate release efficiency of ESB exceeded that of OSB. Economic analysis suggested that the cost of phosphate removal by ESB was $1.13 per kg, and by OSB was $1.22 per kg. The phosphate adsorption using the Ca-loaded biochar revealed good prospects for sustainable development with the advantages of the high efficiency of phosphate removal, low cost and resourceful employment of wastes.

Phosphorus (P) availability in highly weathered soils is significantly influenced by the contents of iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides, clay minerals, and organic matter. With the increasing interest in biofertilizers (e.g. chitosan), it is important to understand how they affect P adsorption profiles on colloids of weathered soils rich in Fe/Al oxides. Thus, the effect of chitosan on the adsorption of P to colloids of hematite, gibbsite , Oxisol , and Ultisol was studied through electrokinetic measurements, spectroscopic analysis , and adsorption edge/isotherm profiles. The presence of chitosan significantly improved the surface positive charge and the decreasing trend of surface positive charge was slower for chitosan-treated colloids compared to the control with increasing pH. At pH 5.0, all the colloids were positively charged, with the oxides containing more positve charges than the soil colloids. At this pH value, the surface coverage capacity of P was 99.1, 61.6, 50.5, and 37.5 mmol kg⁻ 1 for Oxisol, Ultisol, hematite, and gibbsite, respectively. This suggests that clay minerals in soil colloids were vital in enhancing P adsorption. In the presence of chitosan, the surface coverage capacity of P was increased by 111%, 173%, 647%, and 488% for Oxisol, Ultisol, gibbsite, and hematite, respectively. Drawing inferences from spectroscopic analysis, citric acid desorption profile, and zeta potential analysis, we suggest that chitosan (CH) enhanced P adsorption by promoting the formation of (i) citric acid “undisplaceable” inner-sphere P complexes such as [Colloid-OP- O -CH] and [Colloid-OP- N -CH] , (ii) citric acid “displaceable” outer-sphere P complexes such as {[Colloid- O -CH]-OP} and {[Colloid- N -CH]-OP} , and (iii) water “leachable or soluble” P complexes such as {[Colloid-CH] + PO 4 ³⁻} and {[Colloid-OP]⁻CH + } . Thus, applying chitosan as a biofertilizer (source of N) along with P in highly weathered soils could improve P availability while reducing P leaching .

The requirement for the removal of phosphorus (P) from wastewater has become progressively stringent, therefore, it is essential to remove low-concentration phosphate from secondary effluents through a tertiary treatment. One of the biggest challenges in removing phosphate from wastewater is the development of low-cost, green, and pollution-free adsorbents. In this study, novel, eco-friendly and low-cost CeO2 nanosphere modifying CoAl-LDH nanosheets (CoAl-LDH/CeO2) were successfully fabricated using a classical hydrothermal strategy. The microstructure and morphology of CoAl LDH/CeO2 were characterized using SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, TG, XPS, and BET techniques. The performance of the P adsorption from water for CoAl-LDH/CeO2 was investigated. The influences of adsorption parameters, such as adsorbent dosage, pH, phosphate concentration, adsorption time, and experimental temperature, were investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The batch adsorption experiments showed that the P removal by CoAl-LDH/CeO2 could reach 93.4% at room temperature within 60 minutes. CoAl-LDH/CeO2 showed ultrafast and high-efficiency adsorption for low concentration P contaminated wastewater. Pseudo-second order model exhibited better fitting with the kinetics of the phosphate adsorption, while the Freundlich model well-described the isotherm results (R2 > 0.999). Although Cl−, NO3−and SO42− coexisted in the solution, CoAl-LDH/CeO2 still possessed favourable selectivity for phosphates. More importantly, the adsorption capacities of CoAl-LDH/CeO2 retained over 85% after five cycles. Therefore, the low cost and sustainable utilization of CoAl-LDH/CeO2 for the phosphate removal from secondary effluent with phosphate at a low concentration highlights its potential application to alleviate eutrophication.

Water eutrophication caused by phosphate emissions has become a serious environmental issue. In this study, we used the solvothermal method to prepare a novel Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe). Scanning electron microscope observations suggest that Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) consisted of irregular polyhedrons in the size range of tens of micrometers. Spectroscopy results show that cerium atoms (Ce) were successfully doped into the MIL-100(Fe) frameworks. The specific surface area and pore size of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) were 2.6 m 2 /g and 3.4 nm, respectively. Adsorptive kinetics indicated that the pseudo-second-order model with a high correlation coefficient of ( R 2 : 0.9950) fitted better than the pseudo first-order model with R 2 of 0.9436. The adsorptive isotherms showed that for these adsorption reactions, the Langmuir model matched much better than the Freundlich model for this adsorption. These facts suggest that adsorption is chemical sorption, which occurred on a homogeneous surface. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) was as high as 12.03 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of the Ce-doped MIL-100(Fe) depended strongly on the solution pH, ionic strength, and the coexisted ions. The study also found that the precipitation reaction and complexation interaction might be dominated in the adsorption. This study may contribute to the design of bimetal organic frameworks, and might add new insights into the removal of phosphate.
