Salt sacrificial template strategy and in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH)3 on a novel PVDF foam for the simultaneous removal of phosphates and oil pollution without VOCs emission

Yunyun Wang,Li Chen,Yinhua Jiang,Xinyan Yang,Jiangdong Dai,Xiaohui Dai,Mingdong Dong,Yongsheng Yan

Applying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) monolith for phosphates removal can improve the operability of the adsorption process compared with some other powder nanomaterials. However, as the commonly used synthesis strategy, non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) was deemed not environmentally friendly enough since the dissolution of PVDF often involved volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This article designed a salt sacrificial template method to fabricate a 3D porous PVDF monolith, and then in-situ growth of lamellar La(OH) 3 on the PVDF foam was realized to enhance the adsorption affinity to phosphates pollution. No VOCs were used or released during the whole synthesis process. The adsorption for phosphates was as high as 56.2 mg g −1 , and easy reusability of the novel PVDF monolith was realized. In addition, this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam exhibited good adsorption properties in both oil and water environments, which implied it could not only adsorb phosphates in actual water samples but also separate oil contaminants from water. All these implied that this PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates. This PVDF-La(OH) 3 foam could be a potential candidate for large-scale industrial adsorption and separation of phosphates.

New insight into the changes in metal-phosphonate complexes from the addition of CaCO3 to enhance ferric flocculation for efficient phosphonate removal

Chaocheng Zeng,Huimin Hu,Chao Wang,Qing Shi,Qiwu Zhang,Mengfei Chen,Qian Wang,Tingting Zhang

Due to the stable chelating effect of organic phosphonates in wastewater, phosphonates with increasing emission are difficult to be removed effectively by traditional ferric salt flocculation , which has posed tough challenges for reducing total phosphorus pollution in recent years. In this work, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) was introduced to work together with the widely investigated flocculant of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) to realize an efficient removal of nitrilotrismethylenephosphonic acid (NTMP) at much lower dosage of FeCl 3 . With an aid of synergy effect from together use of CaCO 3 and FeCl 3 , the remaining concentration as low as 0.16 mg−P/L, far below the sewage discharge limit (0.5 mg−P/L), was simply obtained with a significantly reduced Fe/P molar ratio at only 4, resulting from calcium source donor to form more stable Fe–Ca–P tridentate bridging complexes, high affinity towards ferric ions on CaCO 3 surface and slow-release alkaline from CaCO 3 . A comparison among sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) and CaCO 3 as additives, was carried out to highlight the advantages of using CaCO 3 and clarify the mechanism for the greatly improved performance by a set of characterizations including XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , XPS , SEM−EDS and TG analyses. The addition of CaCO 3 in ferric flocculation resulted in further obvious advantages such as 75% shortened settling time and only one−third of sludge volume of the precipitant, beneficial to the sample handling in engineering application. The proposed new approach has been further confirmed to work efficiently on real phosphonate-containing wastewater. Discussion on the interaction between CaCO 3 and ferric salts in phosphonate solutions shed new insights into the working mechanism of using CaCO 3 for the treatment of phosphonates-containing wastewater.

Organophosphorus pollutant degradation in wastewater using the microscale zero-valent iron/O3 process: optimization, performance, and mechanism

Cai Zhenpeng,Xiang Yujia,Cong Boyi,Liu Yang,Yang Shuai,Wang Ningruo,Zhang Heng,Wang Yuzhong,Lai Bo

Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate (THPS) is commonly used as a preservative and fungicide in leather production that leads to its presence in tannery wastewater. As a typical organic phosphorus pollutant, THPS poses potential threats to both the ecological environment and human health. Herein, this investigation used the microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI)/O3 process to eliminate THPS from aquatic environments. The mZVI/O3 system demonstrated superior removal performance, achieving high removal efficiencies of total phosphorus (TP), organic phosphorus (OP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) compared to traditional systems (i.e., mZVI alone, O3 alone, Fe2+/O3, and Fe3+/O3). Moreover, batch experiments were conducted to optimize the key operational parameters (such as initial pH, mZVI dosage, O3 concentration, and stirring rate). The TP, OP, and COD removal efficiencies in the mZVI/O3 system reached 97.10%, 97.31%, and 81.56% within 20 min, respectively, under optimized conditions. Based on the experimental results and characterization analysis, the THPS degradation mechanism by the mZVI/O3 system was primarily a combination of oxidation (60.37% ± 7.41%) and flocculation (39.63% ± 7.41%). Furthermore, the mZVI/O3 system demonstrated unprecedented removal performance in various actual wastewater samples. The system eliminated organic pollutants and improved biodegradability of actual wastewater. This study not only establishes the mZVI/O3 process as a robust, cost-effective, and environmentally sound approach for OP degradation but also offers substantial promise for practical wastewater treatment applications.

Ca/Fe-layered double hydroxide–zeolite composites for the control of phosphorus pollution in sediments: Performance, mechanisms, and microbial community response

Yihong Wu,Lei Song,Maofeng Shi,Chuhan Gu,Jiaxian Zhang,Jingyu Lv,Lili Xuan

Despite the strict management of eutrophic waters globally, the release of phosphorus (P) from sediments maintains the eutrophic state of water bodies and poses a serious challenge to their management. Ca/Fe–LDH was synthesized with natural zeolite (NZ) by using a co-precipitation method (denoted as CFL-Z) to solve this problem. Results showed that Ca/Fe–LDH was successfully loaded onto the surface and inside the pores of NZ. The maximum P adsorption capacity value of CFL-Z was 46.7 mg/g under the mechanisms of electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and ion exchange. In incubation experiments, the addition of 6 % CFL-Z into P-contaminated sediments reduced P concentrations in overlying and interstitial water to 0.013 (97.3 % reduction) and 0.358 (82.1 % reduction) mg/L, respectively. In addition, unstable P forms (NH 4 Cl-P and BD-P) in sediments were converted into stable P forms (HCl-P and Res-P, respectively). Subsequent long-term anoxic experiments showed that CFL-Z capping sediments exhibited better inhibition of sediment P release compared with CFL-Z amendment sediments and was efficient and stable. Microbial community analysis showed that CFL-Z amendment and capping reshaped the microbial community structure, and different functional bacteria influenced the stability of sediment P. This work showed that CFL-Z overlays were considered to have potential applications in sediment P fixation, providing a new way to improve the P-binding capacity of natural mineral-like materials and resolve P-contaminated sediments.

Free-standing large-mesoporous silica films decorated with lanthanum as new adsorbents for efficient removal of phosphate

Xuan Jing,Yaxin Wang,Li Chen,Yunyun Wang,Xinyan Yang,Yinhua Jiang,Yongsheng Yan

Nowadays, the problem of phosphorus pollution is serious, and it is extremely urgent to deal with the eutrophication of water bodies caused by phosphorus pollution. In order to promote the governance of this problem, free-standing large-mesoporous silica films were successfully prepared using cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as templates with evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, followed by the removal of CNCs by pickling method using sulfuric acid solution. After decoration with biocompatible lanthanum oxide, the novel phosphate adsorbents (La-MSF-x) possessed the superior adsorption performances with high phosphate adsorption capacities (up to 49.98 mg g −1 ) in experiments. The silica film possessed unique large mesopores with a pore size of approximately 21.07 nm. Moreover, the film adsorbents were used as the host to solve the dilemma of difficult recycling of the powder materials. The results of SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS analysis of La-MSF-5-P after phosphate adsorption demonstrated that multi-adsorption mechanisms could explain the process of phosphate adsorption. And the formation of “rod-like” randomness crystal LaPO 4 precipitation was the dominant pathway in the adsorption process. Thus these lanthanum-doped large-mesoporous silica films with enhanced performance have great potential in water quality protection.
