Due to the complex composition of biochar and the potential interactions between the components that jointly make up biochar, previous studies have always shown controversial results regarding impacts of biochar on soil phosphorus (P) solubilization. Using a nested experimental design, this study investigated the effects of different components of biochar, i.e. whole biochar (BC), dissolved biochar (DBC) and washed biochar (WBC) on the microbial-mediated P solubilizing process. The growth of Bacillus megaterium , acid/alkaline phosphatase activity, differential metabolites of bacteria and metabolic pathways were measured in treatments with biochar pyrolyzed at 200, 300, 400, 500 and 600 °C. Results showed that BC, DBC and WBC all negatively affected the growth and alkaline phosphatase activity of B. megaterium , and BC500/WBC500 and BC400/WBC400 had the greatest impacts. The negative effects of high-temperature biochar on cell proliferation were caused by persistent free radicals and included down-regulation of histidine metabolism by BC400 and interference in nucleotide metabolism by BC600. The impacts of low-temperature biochar on cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase activity were highly related to the metal content. Using the independent action model, antagonistic effects were found between DBC and WBC on inhibiting B. megaterium growth, while these biochars had synergistic effects on inhibition of alkaline phosphatase activity. Overall, this study provides insights on how biochar adversely modulates microbial-mediated P solubilization.

Phosphorus (P)-rich chars produced by phosphoric-acid-assisted pyrolysis are promising carbonaceous remediation agents for soil pollution. Nevertheless, the potential of P species dissolution from P-rich chars has been ignored, and the impact of P dissolution on the sorption of hydrophobic compounds remains greatly unaddressed to date. Herein, the P species dissolution from wood-, cellulose-, and lignin-derived P-rich chars at 200–650 °C were investigated. P release capacity ranged from 0.2 to 0.3 mg·g −1 through cyclic dissolution and the maximum release capacity was 1.6 mg·g −1 through continuous dissolution. Enhanced P dissolution in soil experiment implies that P-rich char can be a potential P source. After P species dissolution, bisphenol A (BPA) sorption increased and carbamazepine (CBZ) sorption decreased onto P-rich chars. The enhanced π-π interaction facilitated BPA sorption, while the declined double charge-assisted H-bond ((±)CAHB) weakened CBZ sorption. Combined with DFT calculations, the binding energy (ΔE) supported the contrasting interfacial sorption processes. Apart from micropore-filling, the contribution of sorption mechanisms followed the sequence of (±)CAHB > π-π interaction > H-bonding. This work not only reveals that P-rich char can serve as a promising phosphatic fertilizer for soil improvement but also casts new light on the sorption mechanisms for hydrophobic compounds.

I. cateinannulatahas been shown to promote the growth ofF. tataricum. However, whether its growth-promoting capacity is related to its ability to solubilize phosphorus has not been reported. Therefore, in this study, we sought to assess the phosphorus-solubilizing ability of 18 strains ofI. cateinannulataby analyzing their growth in an inorganic phosphorus culture medium. The effects ofF. tataricumon growth and effective phosphorus content were analyzed through field experiments. The results showed that all 18 strains ofI. cateinannulatahad a phosphorus release capacity, with phosphorus solubilization ranging from 5.14 ± 0.37 mg/L to 6.21 ± 0.01 mg/L, and strain 9 exhibited the best phosphorus solubilization effect. Additionally, the field results demonstrated thatI. cateinannulatapositively influenced the growth, root length, and yield ofF. tataricumby increasing the chlorophyll and soluble phosphorus content. This study will provide a material basis and theoretical support for investigating the interaction mechanism betweenI. cateinannulataandF. tataricum.

The enhancement of catalytic activity can be achieved by removing non-active components from the surface of catalyst materials, thereby increasing the accessibility of active sites. In this study, an electrically driven method is described for the removal of non-active phosphorus (P) to optimize the surface composition of iron-nickel phosphide (denoted as P-O-NFF), resulting in the exposure of more active Fe–Ni sites for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimized P-O-NFF electrode exhibits exceptional OER catalytic activity, with an overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it demonstrates significant stability, maintaining a 100 % voltage retention rate after 300 h at a high current density of 200 mA cm −2 . The superior performance can be attributed to the disruption of the original crystalline lattice during the electrically driven P dissolution, which leads to the formation of amorphous Fe–Ni hydroxide/oxyhydroxide that enhances active sites exposure. This work offers a simple and effective method for controlling the surface component of catalysts to enhance their catalytic performance, which has the potential to advance industrial water electrolysis technology.

Application of agricultural waste such as rapeseed meal (RM) is regarded as a sustainable way to improve soil phosphorus (P) availability by direct nutrient supply and stimulation of native phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) in soils. However, exploration of the in situ microbial P solubilizing function in soils remains a challenge. Here, by applying both phenotype-based single-cell Raman with D 2 O labeling (Raman-D 2 O) and genotype-based high-throughput chips targeting carbon, nitrogen and P (CNP) functional genes, the effect of RM application on microbial P solubilization in three typical farmland soils was investigated. The abundances of PSMs increased in two alkaline soils after RM application identified by single-cell Raman D 2 O. RM application reduced the diversity of bacterial communities and increased the abundance of a few bacteria with reported P solubilization function. Genotypic analysis indicated that RM addition generally increased the relative abundance of CNP functional genes. A correlation analysis of the abundance of active PSMs with the abundance of soil microbes or functional genes was carried out to decipher the linkage between the phenotype and genotype of PSMs. Myxococcota and C degradation genes were found to potentially contribute to the enhanced microbial P release following RM application. This work provides important new insights into the in situ function of soil PSMs. It will lead to better harnessing of agricultural waste to mobilize soil legacy P and mitigate the P crisis. Impact statement Stimulation of native soil microorganisms to release soil P stocks is a sustainable means of agricultural production, but faces a major challenge in terms of the deciphering of in situ microbial phosphorus (P) solubilization functions. In this study, single-cell Raman spectroscopy and carbon, nitrogen and P (CNP) functional gene chips were used to reveal the phenotypes and genotypes of microbial P solubilization function in three farmland soils amended with agricultural waste of rapeseed meal (RM). Effects of RM on soil properties, active phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, and CNP functional genes that may contribute to P solubilization were revealed, providing important insights into the use of agricultural waste to improve P utilization efficiency.

The ecotoxic endocrine-disrupting chemical di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is ubiquitous in agricultural soil, posing a serious threat to human health. Here, we report efficient soil-borne DEHP degradation and plant growth promotion by a microbial organic fertilizer GK-PPB prepared by combining a recycled garden waste-kitchen waste compost product with ternary compound microbial agent PPB-MA, composed of Penicillium oxalic MB08F, Pseudomonas simiae MB751, and Bacillus tequilensis MB05B. The combination of MB08F and MB751 provided synergistic phosphorus solubilization , and MB05B enhanced the DEHP degradation capacity of MB08F via bioemulsification. Under optimal conditions (25.70 °C and pH 7.62), PPB-MA achieved a 96.81 % degradation percentage for 1000 mg L −1 DEHP within 5 days. The degradation curve followed first-order kinetics with a half-life of 18.24 to 24.76 h. A complete mineralization pathway was constructed after identifying the degradation intermediates of 2 H-labeled DEHP. Evaluation in Caenorhabditis elegans N2 showed that PPB-MA eliminated the ecological toxicity of DEHP. A pakchoi ( Brassica chinensis L.) pot experiment demonstrated that GK-PPB promoted phosphorus solubilization and plant growth, reduced soil DEHP residue, and decreased DEHP accumulation in pakchoi, suggesting its potential practical utility in environmentally responsible and safe cultivation of vegetables.

Environmental pollution by 2, 4 dichlorophenol (2, 4-DCP) has become a widespread concern due to its detrimental influence on human and natural ecosystem. With the increasing accumulation of 2, 4-DCP in soil, it is of great significance to explore some appropriate approaches for enhancing plant tolerance to 2, 4-DCP stress. In the current study, a strain resistant to 2, 4-DCP was obtained from the tall fescue rhizosphere soil and named as Pseudomonas sp. JIT1. The strain JIT1 exhibited several remarkable plant growth-promoting traits, including the production of IAA, fixation of biological nitrogen and solubilization of phosphate. The inoculation of strain JIT1 significantly increased biomass, photosynthesis, antioxidant levels, chlorophyll contents and the osmotic substance contents in rice seedlings exposed to 2, 4-DCP. Meanwhile, inoculation of strain JIT1 also enhanced activities of soil alkaline phosphatase, urease, sucrase and cellulase. Moreover, under 2, 4-DCP stress, the content of allantoin in seedlings significantly increased and the pretreatment of exogenous allantoin noticeably ameliorated the negative effects caused by 2, 4-DCP stress in rice seedlings. Interesting, allantoin treatment also enhanced phosphate solubilization properties of strain JIT1. The chlorophyll contents, photosynthesis and osmotic substance further increased by combination use of strain JIT1 and allantoin, which improved the growth of seedlings, most likely to be attributed to the synergistic or additive effect between allantoin and strain JIT1. The results of this study highlight the important roles of combined use of strain JIT1 and allantoin for improving the tolerance of rice to 2, 4-DCP to stress.

Background Excessive application of chemical fertilizer has exerted a great threat to soil quality and the environment. The inoculation of plants with plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has emerged as a great prospect for ecosystem recovery. The aim of this work to isolate PGPRs and highlights the effect of bacterial inoculants on available N/P/K content in soil and on the growth of wheat under conditions of reduced fertilizer application. Results Thirty-nine PGPRs were isolated and tested for their growth-promoting potential. Thirteen isolates had nitrogen fixation ability, of which N9 ( Azotobacter chroococcum ) had the highest acetylene reduction activity of 156.26 nmol/gh. Eleven isolates had efficient phosphate solubilizing ability, of which P5 ( Klebsiella variicola ) released the most available phosphorus in liquid medium (231.68 mg/L). Fifteen isolates had efficient potassium solubilizing ability, of which K13 ( Rhizobium larrymoorei ) released the most available potassium in liquid medium (224.66 mg/L). In culture medium supplemented with tryptophan, P9 ( Klebsiella pneumoniae ) produced the greatest amount of IAA. Inoculation with the bacterial combination K14 + 176 + P9 + N8 + P5 increased the alkali-hydrolysed nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium in the soil by 49.46, 99.51 and 19.38%, respectively, and enhanced the N, P, and K content of wheat by 97.7, 96.4 and 42.1%, respectively. Moreover, reducing fertilizer application by 25% did not decrease the available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil and N/P/K content, plant height, and dry weight of wheat. Conclusions The bacterial combination K14 + 176 + P9 + N8 + P5 is superior candidates for biofertilizers that may reduce chemical fertilizer application without influencing the normal growth of wheat.

Soilborne pathogens affect plant growth and food production worldwide. The application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to control plant diseases has harmful effects; fortunately, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria can be used as a potential alternative strategy. Here, Paenibacillus jamilae HS-26 was selected for its highly antagonistic activity against several soilborne pathogens. The bacterium synthesized hydrolytic enzymes and released extracellular antifungal metabolites and volatile organic compounds—primarily, N, N-diethyl-1, 4-phenylenediamine, which was detected by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and shown to inhibit fungal mycelial growth. Furthermore, HS-26 was useful for nitrogen fixation, phosphate and potassium solubilization, and siderophore and indoleacetic acid production. In vitro tests and pot experiments revealed that HS-26 considerably increased plant biometric parameters. Illumina MiSeq sequencing data showed a significant reduction in soilborne pathogens and increase in beneficial bacteria in the wheat rhizosphere after treatment with strain HS-26.
