Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient widely used in crops. Phosphate fertilizers are easily adsorbed on the soil surface, resulting in poor migration to the roots of crops, and a large amount of nutrients cannot be absorbed and utilized, resulting in waste of resources and low bioavailability . To solve the problem of insufficient mobility of phosphate fertilizer, this work uses TiO 2 -WO 3 to catalyze the oxidation and pyrolysis of lignite to synthesize small molecular humic acid , and uses small molecular humic acid to coat commercial phosphate fertilizer (MAP) to obtain a new type of phosphate fertilizer (AMAP) with good fluidity. Water contact angle was determined from initially hydrophobic (132°) to hydrophilic (76°). Humic spectroscopic ratio (E 4 /E 6 ), H/C and molecular weight distributions confirmed the effectiveness of the TiO 2 -WO 3 catalyst and the successful modification of weathered lignite. The migration characteristics of phosphorus in the soil were studied by leaching migration experiments. The results showed that the effective phosphorus content of the new coated phosphate fertilizer (AMAP) in the soil exceeded that of the commercial phosphate fertilizer (MAP) at different vertical migration distances. After 21 d of incubation at the same fertilizer level, new coated phosphate fertilizer (AMAP) of phosphate fertilizer added with different products showed elevated levels of P. Migration data indicated that the migration distance of effective phosphorus approximated the long root distance of early corn, which benefitted crop growth. The pot experiment confirmed improved corn growth and improvement in the utilization rate of phosphorus fertilizer. All in all, activated lignite (AHA) can reduce or inhibit the fixation of phosphorus nutrients in the soil, and has obvious application value for improving the efficiency of phosphate fertilizers.

This study aims to improve the slow-release performance of a film material for a controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) while enhancing its biodegradability. A water-based biodegradable polymer material doped with biochar (BC) was prepared from modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and chitosan (CTS), hereinafter referred to as PVA/PVP–CTSaBCb. An environmentally friendly novel controlled-release phosphate fertilizer (CRPF) was developed using PVA/PVP-CTS8%BC7%as the film. The effect of the PVA/PVP-CTS8%BC7%coating on the service life of the CRPF was investigated. The film was characterized via stress–strain testing, SEM, FTIR, XRD, and TGA analyses. The addition of the CTS modifier increased the stress of PVA/PVP-CTS8%by 7.6% compared with that of PVA/PVP owing to the decrease in the crystallinity of PVP/PVP-CTS8%. The hydrophilic –OH groups were reduced due to the mixing of CTS and PVA/PVP. Meanwhile, the water resistance of the PVA/PVP-CTS8%BC7%was improved. And the controlled-release service life of the CRPF was prolonged. Moreover, the addition of BC increased the crystallinity of the PVA/PVP-CTS8%by 10%, reduced the fracture elongation of the material, and further improved the biodegradability of the PVA/PVP-CTS8%BC7%. When the amount of BC added was 7%, the phosphorus release rate of the CRPF was 30% on the 28th day. Moreover, the degradation rate of the PVA/PVP-CTS8%BC7%polymer film was 35% after 120 days. This study provides basic data for applying water-based degradable polymer materials in CRFs.

To improve the availability of inorganic phosphorus (P) in soil, we investigated the role of three macromolecular organic acids (MOAs), including fulvic acid (FA), polyaspartic acid (PA), and tannic acid (TA), in reducing the fixation of inorganic P fertilizer in the soil. AlPO 4 , FePO 4 , and Ca 8 H 2 (PO 4 ) 6 ·5H 2 O crystals were chosen as insoluble phosphate representatives in the soil to simulate the solubilization process of inorganic P by MOAs. The microstructural and physicochemical properties of AlPO 4 , FePO 4 , and Ca 8 H 2 (PO 4 ) 6 ·5H 2 O were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after treatment of MOAs. In addition, the amounts of leached P and fixed inorganic P in Inceptisols and Alfisols affected by MOAs combined with superphosphate (SP) fertilizer were determined by soil leaching experiments. The presence of the three MOAs significantly increased the concentration of leached P and reduced the contents of insoluble inorganic phosphate formed with iron, aluminum, and calcium fixed in the soil, in which PA combined with SP had the most significant effect. Furthermore, the less inorganic P fixation in the combination treatment of MOAs and SP resulted in a greater wheat yield and P uptake. Therefore, MOAs could be a synergistic material for increasing P fertilizer utilization.

BACKGROUND Some soil microorganisms can mobilize unavailable phosphorus (P) in soils for plant use and increase P fertilizer efficiency. Thus, an abiotic P solubilization experiment and fungal incubation in solution and soil were conducted to investigate the mobilization of various P compounds by a new white-rot fungus Ceriporia lacerata HG2011. The crop agronomic performances were then evaluated in the winter barley–summer maize–winter wheat rotation field. RESULTS Ceriporia lacerata HG2011 had a wide P mobilization spectrum and mobilized P by different mechanisms depending on P sources supplied in liquid culture. The chief mechanism employed by this fungus was the production of protons in mobilizing Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , low-molecular-weight organic acids and other unknown substances in FePO 4 and AlPO 4 , phytase (an inducible enzyme in the presence of phytate) in phytate, and phosphatase in lecithin and ribonucleic acid, respectively. As a result of the large fungal biomass, P accumulated in the hypha should also be considered in the assessment of the fungal P mobilization, and not just only soluble inorganic P. As C. lacerata HG2011 colonized on and in the test soil, phosphatase and phytase activities were enhanced but pH decreased in the soil, leading to P mobilization. The application of this fungus mobilized soil P, increased crop P uptake and yields, and consecutively reduced P fertilizer use without yield sacrifices in the multiple crop rotation field. CONCLUSION C. lacerata HG2011 showed a new use with respect to mobilizing soil P and reducing P fertilizer input in modern agriculture beyond medical purposes, environmental protection and biofuel production. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

The study aimed at investigating the addition effects of P, K, and micronutrient fertilizers on the permeability of N-nutrient fertilizer urea through a representative polymer membrane, which is of great importance in polymer-coated compound fertilizer. Specifically, the permeability of urea through polystyrene membrane was determined experimentally at the nominal temperature of 298 K using the Ussing chamber method for fertilizer solutions of urea–water, urea–NaH 2 PO 4 –water, urea–Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 –water, urea–KCl–water, and urea–NaCl–water. The experimental data showed that the addition effects of NaH 2 PO 4 , KCl, and NaCl on urea permeability were pronounced and could be promotion or suppression depending on the amounts added. The variation of urea permeability with additive concentration could be explained by the ‘solution–diffusion’ model, suggesting that the specific intermolecular and interionic interactions in the permeation solution were an important factor determining the permeability. Using the saturated urea–water solution as basis, the addition of saturated KCl increased the urea permeability by 2.5 times, while the addition of saturated Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 and NaH 2 PO 4 decreased the permeability by 41% and 76%, respectively. © 2016 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Fly ash (FA) and eggshells (ES) are common solid wastes with significant potential for the recovery of phosphorus from water. This study focuses on synthesizing a low-cost and environmental-friendly phosphate adsorbent called eggshell-fly ash geopolymer composite (EFG) using eggshells instead of chemicals. The CaO obtained from the high-temperature pyrolysis of eggshells provides active sites for phosphate adsorption, and CO 2 serves as a pore-forming agent. The phosphate adsorption performance of EFG varied with the eggshell-fly ash ratios and achieved a maximum of 49.92 mg P/g at an eggshell-fly ash ratio of 40 %. The adsorption process was well described by the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model. EFG also exhibited a good regeneration performance through six-cycle experiments and achieved the highest phosphate desorption at pH 4.0. The results of the column experiment showed that EFG can be used as a filter media for phosphorus removal in a real-scale application with low cost. Soil burial test indicated saturated EFG has a good phosphate slow-release performance (maintained for up to 60 days). Overall, EFG has demonstrated to be a promising adsorbent for phosphorus recovery.

Background Vivianite is an intensively studied phosphorus (P) recovery product from wastewater treatment plants. However, its downstream application has not been well-addressed thus restricting P cycling. This study investigated the P fertilizer efficiency of vivianite in pot experiments using ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum L.) and tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum L.) with two soilless growing media (perlite and quartz). The variation of vivianite during fertilization was examined to elucidate the mechanisms of P release from vivianite, using a recently developed sequential P extraction protocol coupled with light microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Results The mineral fertilizer equivalence (MFE) of vivianite was determined by comparing the P uptake by plants under vivianite treatment to that under mineral P fertilizer treatment, i.e., Ca(H 2 PO 4 ) 2 in this study. It shows that the vivianite-P uptake of ryegrass was positively correlated with time in a 3-month period and its uptake in quartz was faster than that in perlite, leading to a higher MFE of vivianite in quartz than in perlite (15.8–20.3% vs 6.6–7.4%). This should be attributed to the higher P adsorption capacity and lower hydraulic conductivity of perlite, which restricted the vivianite-P dissolution and mobility. The vivianite variation revealed that vivianite-P was mainly released upon vivianite oxidation to ferric (hydr)oxides in perlite, probably given the high aeration condition in this type of growing medium. In quartz, however, the release of vivianite-P was most likely due to vivianite dissolution driven by the plant uptake of P, during which a higher plant uptake of Fe was observed than that in perlite. Conclusions The findings reveal that vivianite can serve as a slow-release P fertilizer, and its fertilizer efficiency is highly related to the properties of the growing media. Quartz is a preferred growing medium over perlite for the efficient fertilization of this sparingly soluble P source. The findings deepen the understanding of P fertilization of vivianite and lay foundation to its utilization as a slow-release P fertilizer for a circular economy of P. Graphical

Excessive phosphate content input into natural water can lead to the waste of resource and eutrophication. Biochar is a kind of low-cost adsorbent. However, its adsorption capacity for phosphate is low. In order to solve this problem, Fe compound-modified fly ash/cotton stalk biochar composites (Fe-FBC) were prepared through co-pyrolyzed fly ash and cotton stalk at 800℃, followed by infiltration of FeSO 4 solution. The samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and zeta potential. After modification, the hydrophilicity and polarity of Fe-FBC increased. In addition, the pore volume, specific surface area, and surface functional groups were significantly improved. The adsorption behavior of Fe-FBC for the removal of phosphate from water can be well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Sips isotherm adsorption model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 47.91 mg/g. Fe-FBC maintained a high adsorption capacity in the pH range of 3–10. The coexisting anions (NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , and Cl − ) had negligible effects on phosphate adsorption. The adsorption mechanisms of Fe-FBC include electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, surface complexation, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the desorption process of phosphate was investigated, indicating that the phosphate-saturated Fe-FBC could use as slow-release phosphate fertilizer. This study proposed a potentially environmental protection and recycling economy approach, which consists of recycling resources and treating wastes with wastes.
