Phosphorus is a promising anode material for potassium-ion batteries due to the highest theoretical-specific capacity among all the proposed anode materials. So far, it is considered to have similar disadvantages to silicon anode , such as poor electronic conductivity and huge volumetric change, thus, lots of efforts have been devoted to synthesizing phosphorus/carbon hybrids. However, the electrochemical performance is still unsatisfied, due to the unclear capacity decay mechanism. Here we reveal that soluble potassium polyphosphides are generated during potassiation process and shuttle to the counter electrode where the side effects occur, leading to the loss of active phosphorus and the failure of counter electrode. To address this issue, we developed the P/CNT-LiF electrode in combination with the replacement of conventional KPF 6 by potassium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) in electrolyte, in which KFSI contributes to the formation of stable and tough solid electrolyte interface (SEI), meanwhile LiF can prevent polyphosphides from diffusing to the electrolyte before and after the formation of SEI. Thus, the thin, stable and uniform SEI layer can be generated at the surface of the electrode particles, inhibiting the polyphosphides’ shuttle, contributing to the improved initial coulomb efficiency (73.7%) and reversible specific capacity (507.6 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 50 mA g −1 ).

Sodium-ion batteries are attracting increasing interests as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to the abundant resource and low cost of sodium. Despite phosphorus (P) has extremely high theoretical capacity of 2595 mAh g −1 , its wide application for sodium-ion battery is highly hampered by its fast capacity fading and low Coulombic efficiency as a result of large volume change upon cycling. Herein, a robust phosphorus anode with long cycle life for sodium-ion battery via hybridization with functional conductive polymer is presented. To this end, the polyacrylonitrile is first dehydrogenated by sulfur via a facile thermal treatment, forming a conductive main chain embedded with C–S–S moieties. This functional conductive polymer enables the formation of P S bonds between phosphorus and functional conductive matrix, leading to a robust electrode that can accommodate the large volume change upon substantial volume change in cycling. Consequently, this hybrid anode delivers a high capacity of ≈1300 mAh g −1 at a current density of 520 mA g −1 with high Coulombic efficiency (>99%) and good cycling performance (91% capacity retention after 100 cycles).

With the rapid evolution of electric vehicles, there is a growing demand for batteries with high energy and safety. Among various options, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO)/phosphorus battery has emerged as one of the most promising candidates due to its appropriate lithiation potential and remarkable specific capacity. However, challenges related to high-voltage, polyphosphate dissolution, and phosphorus combustion safety issues persist in this system. Herein, we design a nonflammable electrolyte with a wide electrochemical window of over 5.8 V. It successfully mitigates the shuttling effect observed in phosphorus anodes, resulting in an impressive capacity retention of 80% over 600 cycles. The LNMO||P/C full cell delivers a stable capacity of 97.5 mAh g–1 over 200 cycles with an exceptional energy density of 350 Wh kg–1. These findings mark a significant step forward in the development of high-safety and high-performance phosphorus anode batteries, opening up exciting possibilities for their application in electric vehicles and beyond.

The demand for state-of-the-art high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries is increasing. However, the low specific capacity of electrode materials in conventional full-cell systems cannot meet the requirements. Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes such as Li(Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 )O 2 (NCM811) have a high theoretical specific capacity of 200 mAh g −1 , but it is always accompanied by side reactions on the electrode/electrolyte interface. Phosphorus anode possesses a high theoretical specific capacity of 2596 mAh g −1 , but it has a huge volume expansion (≈300%). Herein, a highly compatible and secure electrolyte is reported via introducing an additive with a narrow electrochemical window, Lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB), into 1 m LiPF 6 EC/DMC with tris (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphate (TFEP) as a cosolvent. LiDFOB participates in the formation of organic/inorganic hybrid electrode/electrolyte interface layers at both the cathode and anode sides. The side reactions on the surface of the NCM811 cathode and the volume expansion of the phosphorus anode are effectively alleviated. The NCM811//RP full cell in this electrolyte shows high capacity retention of 82% after 150 cycles at a 0.5C rate. Meanwhile, the electrolyte shows non-flammability. This work highlights the importance of manipulating the electrode/electrolyte interface layers for the design of lithium-ion batteries with high energy density.
