Graphical Try to set the night on fire : a nonflammable electrolyte for room-temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries is prepared by introducing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into 1.0 M NaClO 4 -ethylene carbonate/ propylene carbonate (EC/PC) electrolyte. With 15 wt.% TMP-contained electrolyte the C/S electrode shows excellent cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 788 mAh g −1 after 80 cycles as well as a good rate performance. To address the safety concern for room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries, such as fires easily triggered by organic electrolytes, an applicable non-flammable electrolyte formula was developed by introducing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) into 1.0 M NaClO 4 -ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate electrolyte. It is demonstrated that the electrolyte containing 15 wt.% TMP was a optimized formula, exhibiting nonflammability, thermal stability, electrochemical compatibility and lasting cell performance. Using this optimized electrolyte formula, the sulfur cathode exhibited a stable capacity of 788 mAh g −1 at a rate of 0.1 C and excellent rate capability of 441 and 177 mAh g −1 for 200 cycles at rates of 1 C and 5 C , respectively. When the TMP content further increases to 25 wt.%, the specific capacity of batteries declined significantly due to unstable SEI. Our study can shed light on the development of flame-retardant electrolyte for room-temperature sodium-sulfur or other batteries.

Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) is a flame-retardant solvent frequently used in nonaqueous electric energy storage devices. Anions can hardly intercalate into a graphite positive electrode from neat TMP at ordinary conditions. In TMP solutions, dissolving lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6), lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4), lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI), and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) (LiTFSI), by means of increasing lithium salt concentration or increasing the charge cutoff voltage of Li/graphite cells, the TMP-solvated anions can successfully intercalate into graphite positive electrodes. Moreover, the effect of TFSI– activation on a graphite electrode is addressed. Ex situ X-ray diffraction measurements in combination with traditional electrochemical tests are employed to investigate the crystal structure change and electrochemical performance of graphite electrodes, respectively. Nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared, and Raman spectroscopy are employed to characterize the TMP solutions.

Nonflammable electrolytes are promising substitutes for the state-of-the-art carbonate-based electrolytes in order to directly enhance the safety characteristics of lithium ion batteries. Combination of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and a fluorinated ether of 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (FEPE) is designed to formulate nonflammable electrolytes. The reformulated electrolytes of 1 mol/L LiPF 6 /TMP + FEPE (9:1, 8:2 and 7:3, w/w) are totally nonflammable. The FEPE solvent has higher oxidative stability and the FEPE-containing electrolytes have better separator wettability than the pure TMP electrolyte (1 mol/L LiPF 6 /TMP). The improved oxidative stability and separator wettability can enhance electrochemical stability of electrolyte on high-voltage cathode LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 . In Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cells, the FEPE-containing electrolyte exhibits the better cycling stability than the pure TMP electrolyte, and the solvent composed of TMP + FEPE (8:2) is the optimal ratio. The Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 /LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cell with the optimal electrolyte exhibits better rate capability because of the reduced polarization and improved oxidation stability. This work reveals the effect of fluorinated ethers on separator wettability of TMP-based nonflammable electrolytes and high-voltage applications.

Polymer electrolytes hold significant potential in solid-state battery applications due to their high flexibility and scalable manufacturing capabilities. However, it is still necessary to address the safety problems and poor rate performance. Herein, the synergistic effect of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB) in the in-situ fabricated poly-butyl acrylate (PBA) quasi-solid electrolyte (QSE) is investigated. The non-flammable additive, TMP, has proven to combine with LiDFOB in the electrolytes as TMP-DFOB − pair. The TMP-DFOB − pair can promote the formation of a B–O, B–F, LiF, and Li 3 P containing solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium anode, enabling stable lithium striping-plating processes. Besides, it enhances the formation of a LiF-rich cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and promotes intimate contact between the cathode active materials and PBA-QSE, thereby enhancing the rate performance. Therefore, the Li/PBA-LiDFOB-0.1TMP/LiFePO 4 (LFP) cell delivers discharge capacity of 132 mAh g −1 with a remarkable capacity retention of 95.68 % after 500 cycles at 1 C. Even at 4 C, the discharge capacity reaches 92.1 mAh g −1 . This non-flammable PBA-LiDFOB-TMP QSE exhibits potential application in high energy density systems. Furthermore, this work provides new insights into strategies for improving rate performance from lithium salts and functional additives aspects.

Aqueous zinc-metal batteries are regarded as the most promising energy conversion and storage devices in the near future because of high volume energy density, low cost, and extreme safety. However, the practical industrialization of zinc-metal batteries is still facing the challenges of poor Zn anode reversibility, such as Zn dendrite propagation, interface corrosion, and hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we report an optimized Zn2+ solvation structure composite electrolyte modified by trimethyl phosphate (TMP) additive, which can suppress the rough growth of Zn dendrites, the formation of H2, the corrosion of zinc, and the formation of passivation layer. Because TMP has a higher Gutmann donor number than H2O, the higher electron cloud density of O atoms in TMP enhances the strength of hydrogen bonds with H2O. Resultantly, the coordination environment of Zn2+ with H2O is broken instead of reconstructed Zn2+ solvation structure with moderate TMP additive. The electrochemical reversibility of the Zn anode is enhanced in the optimized electrolyte with TMP. Consequently, the cycling stability of Zn plating/stripping is promoted by 15% TMP modified electrolyte with high CE of 99.22% at 1 mA cm–2, stably cycled for 850 cycles compared with short-term lifespan less than 200 cycles in the blank electrolyte. The Zn||Zn symmetrical cells can sustain dendrite-free for more than 3000 h with overpotentials of 0.1 V. In addition, the Zn||V2O5 full cell can contribute an unexceptionable long-term cycling stability for over 1000 cycles even at 1 A g–1 with the reversible capacity retention of 66 mA h g–1. This work proposes a facile strategy to regulate the metal-ion solvation structure in aqueous metal batteries.

An intumescent-flame-retardant vinyl acetate–ethylene copolymer (IFR/VAE) compound has been prepared by blending with a complex of melamine amino trimethyl phosphate (M-AT) and sodium lignosulfonate (SL). Then, this obtained IFR/VAE polymer was applied as adhesives for producing the flame-retardant plywood. The IFR VAE sample (VAE/M-AT3/SL1) with a mass ratio 3:1 (M-AT to SL) showed an enhanced amount of char residue, limiting oxygen index (LOI) value and tensile strength value to 20.6 wt%, 32 vol% and 19.3 MPa, which have been increased by 796%, 600%, and 56% compared to that of neat VAE. The cone calorimeter result showed that the peak of heat release rate (pHRR) of VAE/M-AT3/SL1 sample was reduced by 48% compared to the control one. Additionally, the second peak of HRR of sample IFRPW/15 L/15 (containing 15 wt% M-AT3/SL1 in the plywood adhesive layer) presented a reduction of 29% compared to that of the sample PW/15 L (neat plywood). It is assigned to the formation of phospho-carbonaceous structure during combustion, thus the flame-retardancy of plywood has been greatly enhanced. Thus, this work provides an economical and applicable fire-retardant VAE adhesive formula for producing plywood materials with good performances.

Composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) based on garnet Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) are promising for solid-state batteries due to their high ionic conductivity and flexibility. However, interfacial instability with lithium metal anodes promotes dendrite growth and side reactions. To address this issue, an in situ polymerized interfacial layer (TPELL layer) was constructed by copolymerizing trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and ethylene carbonate (EC) between the Li anode and CSE. The copolymerization of EC and TMP effectively regulates the solvent structure within the interfacial layer, which in turn modulates the Li + coordination environment and enhances the mechanical robustness of the interface. Furthermore, the incorporation of EC and LiPF 6 promotes the formation of a more stable lithium metal anode/electrolyte interface. Consequently, the Li||LiFePO 4 cell with CSE containing interfacial layer formed by copolymerization of TMP and EC exhibits a capacity retention of 93.83 % after 750 cycles at 1C and the Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cell maintains 130.1 mAh g −1 after 350 cycles at 0.5C. Post-cycling analysis indicates that the preserved integrity of the cathode structure can be ascribed to the formation of a multifunctional cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) derived from TPELL components, which effectively suppresses transition-metal dissolution and alleviates interfacial resistance. Moreover, this in situ polymerization strategy facilitates intimate interfacial contact at both the anode and cathode, thereby providing a promising pathway to address the persistent electrode–electrolyte interfacial challenges in solid-state lithium metal batteries.
