Sustainable Phosphate Recovery Using Novel Ca–Mg Bimetallic Modified Biogas Residue-Based Biochar

Qi Wang,Guanghui Zhuo,Dongxin Xue,Guangcan Zhu,Chu-Ya Wang

Elevated phosphorus levels in aquatic ecosystems have been identified as a critical driver of eutrophication processes, necessitating resource-recovery remediation strategies. Adsorption techniques show particular promise for nutrient recovery due to their selective binding capacities and operational feasibility. In this study, the Mg- and Ca-modified biogas residue-based biochar (Ca-Mg/BC) was successfully prepared via a “bimetallic loading-pyrolysis” modification strategy. The optimum temperature for the calcination of the material and the salt solution impregnation concentrations were determined experimentally through optimization of the synthesis conditions. Structural and chemical analyses of Ca–Mg/BC demonstrated that the material contains MgO and CaO. The specific surface area of Ca–Mg/BC was 8.49 times higher than that of the unmodified biochar (BC). The optimized Ca–Mg/BC achieved 95% phosphate removal rate (157.13 mg/g adsorption capacity). FTIR and XPS characterization results indicated the importance of Ca/Mg loading in phosphate capture. MgO and CaO were mainly loaded on the surface of the material and adsorbed phosphate through a chemical reaction. Crucially, the phosphate-laden biochar exhibited potential as a nutrient-enriched soil amendment, opening the material loop from wastewater treatment to agricultural applications. This sustainable strategy simultaneously addresses water pollution control and sustainable development, providing environmentally benign solutions compatible with industrial effluent treatment and sustainable agriculture practices.

Alkali-treated yttrium-containing chitosan-based hydrogels for phosphate recover with highly selective in wide pH aqueous solution

Xingyu Wu,Yaoqi Lei,Yanzong Zhang,Zhenxing Zeng,Lulu Long,Xiaojing Wang,Yan He,Gang Yang,Fei Shen,Yan Liu

Excessive discharge of wastewater containing phosphorus is the leading cause of water eutrophication. In this study, yttrium ions were embedded in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel beads by adsorption of amino functional groups. After alkali treatment, a new chitosan-based yttrium hydrogel adsorbent (PC-Y-OH) with porous channels was perpetrated. The results showed that alkali treatment reduced the protonation of amino functional groups in hydrogel and made PC-Y-OH have stable adsorption of phosphate in the initial solution of pH 4∼10. Compared with hydrogel beads without alkali treatment (PC-Y 3+ ), the inhibition of high concentration bicarbonate and sulfate of PC-Y-OH was reduced by 47 % and 43 %, respectively, under acidic conditions (initial pH of 3). In weak acid (initial pH of 6) or alkaline (initial pH of 8) conditions, its adsorption capacity is almost uninhibited by co-existing substances. After regenerating the adsorbent with an alkali solution 7 times, the adsorption capacity was still over 80 % of the first adsorption. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics results indicated that PC-Y-OH could reach the adsorption equilibrium within 2 h, and the adsorption process was a spontaneous exothermic process with a maximum adsorption capacity of 62.36 mg-P/g. Surface chemical analysis of the adsorbent indicated that phosphate adsorption on the adsorbent was primarily driven by chemical complexation. Moreover, this provides a promising adsorbent for recovering phosphorus from aquatic environments.

Manipulating Electrochemical Phosphate Recovery from Acidic Wastewater for Synthesizing LiFePO4/C Cathode Material

Bingnan Song,Wei Chen,Ying Pu,Weiquan Li,Zhengshuo Zhan,Haisheng Fang,Yang Lei

Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater offers a sustainable solution for mitigating pollution and securing resources for applications like lithium-ion batteries, where ferric phosphate is a valuable precursor. This study evaluates iron electrolysis for P removal and recovery from acidic wastewater with high phosphate concentrations and medium Ca²⁺ levels. The results suggested that effective P removal and high-purity iron phosphate production can be achieved by varying initial pH, current density, and oxidation conditions. Importantly, slow Fe release rates (0.02–0.04 mmol L⁻¹ min⁻¹) favored ferric phosphate formation (71%–77% removal), while faster rates (0.16–0.46 mmol L⁻¹ min⁻¹) predominantly produced vivianite (∼65% removal). In addition, air flush can enhance dissolved oxygen flux, achieving 89% P removal under rapid Fe release but with mixed products. H₂O₂ addition improved in situ Fe(II) oxidation, achieving 92% P removal and purer ferric phosphate. Compared to chemical precipitation, which required pH adjustment and suffered from Ca co-precipitation, iron electrolysis produced purer ferric phosphate directly, without pH pre-adjustment. The recovered ferric phosphate showed excellent potential as a precursor for high-performance LiFePO₄/C cathode material. These findings position iron electrolysis as a promising approach for sustainable P recovery and resource valorization from wastewater.

Seawater boosts oxytetracycline (OTC) residues in struvite via hydroxyapatite (HAP) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) co-precipitation

Degui Gao,Yuefei Huang,Shungui Zhou,Bing Li,Guangqian Wang

Seawater, as an alternative magnesium (Mg) source, has the potential to improve the overall economic and environmental footprint of struvite production compared to the use of pure Mg salts. However, the presence of other ions in seawater may affect the migration of tetracyclines (TCs), commonly found in wastewater, potentially reducing the quality of the recovered product, and posing environmental risks. But these effect has not been illustrated before. This study investigated the impact of seawater on oxytetracycline (OTC) migration during struvite recovery from swine wastewater. Under varying pH levels and Mg/P molar ratios, the OTC content in recovered struvite was ranged from 19 to 103 μg/g, which was 6 to 43 μg/g when using MgCl 2 as Mg source. The key factor influencing OTC content was identified as Ca 2+ in seawater. The co-precipitation of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and the incorporation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were the primary reasons for increased OTC content. Interactions between Ca 2+ on HAP surfaces and the carbonyl oxygen of OTC, along with ternary complex formations involving Ca 2+ , DOM, and OTC, facilitated OTC migration through adsorption onto struvite. Notably, increasing the Mg/P molar ratio reduced OTC enrichment due to the competition between Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported these interfacial interactions. These findings enhanced the understanding of antibiotic migration during phosphorus (P) recovery using seawater as alternative Mg source and suggested solutions for reducing P recovery contamination in the future.

Induced electro-Fenton triggers trace iron utilization for simultaneous organic phosphorous degradation and phosphate recovery

Ning Deng,Jie Hu,Lejiaqi Zhang,Congcong Ni,Qi Zhang,Xin Huang

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater has the potential to alleviate both phosphorus scarcity and water pollution. Unlike mineral orthophosphate, organic phosphorus (OP) recovery typically requires multiple steps: oxidation to orthophosphate followed by separation. Electro-Fenton can synchronize these steps in a unified reactor. However, conventional anodic-Fenton (AF) that relies on the direct sacrificial Fe anode, often generates excessive iron sludge. This not only undermines the oxidative capacity but also changes the optimal pH conditions. Herein, we addressed these challenges by developing an induced electro-Fenton (I-EF) system that significantly reduces iron sludge by 94.0 %. The degradation of 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC, 5.0 mg P/L) in I-EF reached 76.7 % in 60 min, which is much higher than that (46.0 %) in the conventional AF system. Following PBTC degradation to form PO 4 3- , the I-EF system achieved 88 % PO 4 3- recovery through adsorption onto iron hydroxides. The exceptional performance in simultaneous PBTC degradation and recovery can be attributed to multiple functions of minimal iron utilization in the I-EF system. First, trace iron release can prevent quenching of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) by excessive Fe 2+ . Second, the absence of strong iron hydrolysis can maintain a stable pH condition (3.0–3.2) for Fenton reaction and avoid PBTC removal through direct coagulation process. The feasibility of I-EF was also successfully demonstrated for other OP forms containing C-P and C-O-P bonds. The degradation efficiency of various OPs was closely related to their bond energy and complexation capacity with iron hydroxides. This study makes use of the I-EF system to innovatively accomplish the degradation of organic phosphorous and simultaneous phosphate recovery.

Struvite precipitation from biogas digestion slurry using a two-chamber electrolysis cell with a magnesium anode

Xiaochang Lin,Zhiying Han,Hongjun Yu,Zhangying Ye,Songming Zhu,Jun Zhu

A novel, two-chamber electrolysis cell equipped with an ion exchange membrane and a magnesium anode was proposed in this study to recover phosphate as struvite from both the simulated and real biogas digestion slurry of swine wastewater. In the electrolysis experiments with the simulated slurry, the optimal pH and current density were determined to be 8.5 and 22.2 A m −2 , respectively, achieving 95% phosphate removal efficiency and 100% current efficiency. The phosphate removal rate was mainly dependent on the magnesium dissolving rate. In the electrolysis experiments with the real digestion slurry, the pH of slurry increased from 7.4 to around 8.7 after the cathode-anode sub-section electrolysis without adding chemical reagents, achieving 93% phosphate removal efficiency at 22.2 A m −2 . The phosphate removal efficiency could be kept constant in three consecutive electrolysis cycles with both the anion exchange membrane and the cation exchange membrane . The cost of the magnesium anode treatment for the real biogas digestion slurry for struvite recovery was estimated to be $81.57 kg −1  P, mainly resulting from the consumption of electricity and magnesium anode. The precipitates collected from all experiments were identified as struvite by the X-ray diffraction analysis.

Xiaomin Kong,Runying Bai,Shuailin Wang,Bo Wu,Ruzhang Zhang,Huidong Li

Considering the phosphorus pollution in the water and the shortage of phosphate rock resources, the TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 composite is prepared by sol–gel method to adsorb and recover phosphate from wastewater. The physio-chemical properties combined with adsorption experiment results show that the phosphate adsorption of TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 is mono-layer chemical adsorption with electrostatic attraction and ligand exchange. The adsorption capacity reaches 64.6 mg/g at 25 °C in pH 6 and the phosphate recovery rate is over 85% after 5 recycling times. The TiO 2 */Fe 3 O 4 , which is easily separated magnetically from water with excellent phosphate removal performance of municipal sewage, is a promising specific phosphate adsorbent.

Struvite crystallization by using active serpentine: An innovative application for the economical and efficient recovery of phosphorus from black water

Xuewei Li,Xu Zhao,Juanjuan Zhang,Jingwei Hao,Qiwu Zhang

Recovery of phosphorus from wastewater through struvite crystallization is one of the most attractive methods. However, the cost of chemical consumption makes this technology is unattractive to some extent. In this work, highly active serpentine was prepared by one-step mechanical activation and then used to recover phosphate as struvite from the black water containing 132.8 mg/L phosphorus and 3144 mg/L ammonia nitrogen. The results indicated that the prepared active serpentine can release magnesium ions and hydroxide ions simultaneously into an aqueous solution and is an ideal raw material for struvite crystallization. The factors for phosphorus recovery in this process mainly include mechanical activation intensity, serpentine dosage, and contact time. For the actual black water, a high recovery rate of phosphorus (>98%) is achieved by using active serpentine as the magnesium and alkali source for struvite precipitation. The recovery product was identified as struvite with a median particle size of 32.96 μm. It was confirmed that the mechanical activation damaged the crystal structure of the raw serpentine, improving the activity of Mg 2+ and OH − . The undissolved Si-containing particles act as crystal seeds, accelerating the struvite crystallization process. Furthermore, a pilot-scale test was conducted with a rural public toilet in Xiong'an New District, Hebei Province. The results showed that an acceptable phosphorus recovery (98%) could be achieved using active serpentine. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the serpentine process to recover phosphate as struvite reduced the cost by 54.4% in compared with an ordinary chemical process. The active serpentine is a promising dual source of magnesium and alkali for the phosphorus recovery by the struvite method. It has a potential prospect for the large-scale application in phosphorus recovery and struvite fertilizer production.

Novel oxymagnesite/green rust nanohybrids for selective removal and slow release of phosphate in water

Xiaoming Tao,Jiang Xu,Kun Yang,Daohui Lin

The new paradigm in wastewater treatment demands to change traditional pollutants removal into resource recovery, especially for non-renewable P resources, effectively recovering phosphate from wastewater and reutilizing it as a nutrient is crucial to P sustainable utilization and P-related pollution control . The nanomaterial-based adsorption technology for P recovery from wastewater is becoming a research hotspot due to its high efficiency and selectivity . Herein, to recover aqueous phosphate, we developed novel oxymagnesite/green rust (OMGR) nanohybrids by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Green rust nanoparticles dispersed on the highly reactive oxymagnesite (MgO 2MgCO 3 ) nanosheets could achieve efficient recovery and reuse of P. The volume ratio of water to ethylene glycol played an important role in the preparation of OMGR. The OMGR possessed an excellent selectivity of phosphate removal in the presence of multi-anions and wide pH adaptability in 4.0–10.0. The formation of Mg P nanocrystals and the inner-sphere Fe O P complexes via ligand exchange contributed to the selective removal of P by OMGR, and the removal capacity reached 141 mg P . g − 1 . The process of phosphate removal by OMGR was spontaneously endothermic and controlled by the intraparticle and boundary layer diffusion. Most importantly, the high bioavailable P (127 mg . g − 1 ) of P-loaded OMGR had a persistent release behavior regulated by dissolution and diffusion, indicating that the P-loaded OMGR can act as a slow-release P-fertilizer. The findings provide a green and eco-friendly approach to realizing P resource recovery and reuse for phosphate-containing wastewaters.

In-situ recrystallization mechanism of vivianite-phosphorus in hydrochar during Fe(III) induced hydrothermal treatment of sewage sludge

Hugang Li,Hongxu Chen,Yongfei Gao,Yuhong Qin,Shuai Niu,Hui Zhou,Yuanhui Zhang

Crystallization of vivianite-phosphorus is a promising method to recover phosphate as a vital resource from sewage sludge hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) products. This study reveals the in-situ recrystallization mechanism of vivianite-phosphorus (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) regulated by FeCl 3 -assisted HTC in depth. The key finding includes the decipherment that phosphorus is mainly enriched in hydrochar (72.7 ± 2.9 %wt ∼ 84.4 ± 3.31 %wt). Further identified by HRTEM and XRD, dominant phosphorus is profiled as vivianite (Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O) with very few calcium phosphate crystals (Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ) formation in hydrochar at near-neutral condition. Under acidic conditions, HMF oxidation triggers reductive dissolution of surface-bound Fe(III)-phosphate complexes, releasing Fe 2+ , HPO 4 2− , and PO 4 3− . The anoxic, reducing conditions at circumneutral pH created by HTC, combining with favorable Fe: P ratio (1.72) and lower calcium concentration (532 mg L −1 ), comprehensively drives the crystallization of Fe 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O. This demonstration-of-practice study provides deep insights into dual organic waste resource and energy valorization.

Efficient Electrochemical Recovery of Phosphate from Phosphogypsum Leachate for Lithium-Ion Battery Cathode Application

Shan Liu,Xiang-Yang Lou,Wenjun Shi,Peiwen Liu,Xiaosong Gu,Xuezhen Feng,Songhe Yang,Yangzi Shangguan,Hao Fan,Huiling Zhou,Qi Yue,Zhouguang Lu,Hong Chen

As an essential and eutrophication element, aquatic phosphorus (P) must be fine-controlled for both environmental protection and resource recovery. Traditional P recovery heavily relies on adsorption and precipitation. Herein, we report a sustainable electrochemical Faradaic process for efficient phosphate recovery from phosphogypsum (PG) leachate, yielding high-purity Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O, a valuable precursor for lithium-ion battery (LIB) cathodes. Leveraging the low solubility of Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O (pKsp ≈ 36) and stringent control of dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and pH (below 9), a P recovery efficiency of up to 99.3% with high selectivity has been achieved from undiluted leachate with an iron sacrificial anode. The residue P concentration down to 3.9 mg/L in effluent meets the discharge standards of China’s Emission Standards for Water Pollutants in the phosphate fertilizer industry (total phosphorus <10 mg/L). The recovered Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O is used to fabricate the LiFePO4/C electrode for LIB application via a solid-state chemistry synthesis process, which exhibits a high discharge capacity (52.36–56.88 mAh/g), demonstrating the high-quality and potential of resource utilization of the recovered phosphate material for LIB cathode fabrication. This work demonstrates a novel, high-value pathway for sustainable phosphate recovery from PG leachate, promoting P resource management through a “waste-to-resource” strategy.

Phosphate recovery from aqueous environment with recyclable nanoscale zero-valent iron coated with aluminum hydroxide

Zhixuan Tan,Xiaoyao Fan,Qiqi Fan,Siqi Lu,Tian Yu,Lihang Ma,Yuxuan Luo,Jing Li,Hao Li,Yi-bo Hu

Recovery of phosphate (PO 4 -P) from the aqueous environment is crucial for sustainable eutrophication and phosphorus resource management. In this study, aluminum hydroxide-coated nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI@Al(OH) 3 ) was developed as a magnetic-recyclable, air-stable, and efficient adsorbent for aqueous PO 4 -P removal and recovery. The Al(OH) 3 shell could effectively protect the NZVI core from corrosion by O 2 and H + under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, keeping the NZVI@Al(OH) 3 magnetically recyclable after adsorption. In addition, the Al(OH) 3 shell adsorbs PO 4 -P efficiently via Al-O-P inner-sphere complexation, which was not affected by atmospheric conditions, pH conditions, and the co-existing anions and natural organic matter in real surface waters. After adsorption, PO 4 -P can be readily desorbed by facile immersion of used NZVI@Al(OH) 3 in a highly alkaline solution and precipitated as hydroxylapatitle, with bare NZVI and dissolved AlO 2 - recovered for recycling. Therefore, NZVI@Al(OH) 3 is a robust and cost-effective adsorbent for PO 4 -P recovery under real surface water conditions.
