FePO 4 (FP) as a precursor of lithium iron phosphate batteries has been mass-produced in recent years and may face the problem of overproduction. Also, the phosphorus removal process in wastewater treatment plants produces large amounts of sludge containing FP. It is a huge waste of both iron and phosphorus resources if such FP cannot be utilized. This work explores a new strategy for utilizing FP to activate sulfite (S(IV)) autoxidation for simultaneous pollutant degradation and phosphorus release in water. Acid orange 7 (AO7) and several pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) were chosen as the target pollutants for the FP‒S(IV) system and the influence of pH, FP and S(IV) dosage were investigated. Typically, up to 89.5% AO7 (10 mg L −1 ) and above 60% PPCPs (10 μM) were oxidized within 90 min by adding 1 g L −1 FP and 2 mM S(IV) into the water at the initial pH 4.0. Results of quenching experiments and electron spin resonance analysis confirmed SO 5 •− as the dominant reactive species for AO7 oxidation. Meanwhile, two stages of phosphorus release from FP were observed along with the AO7 oxidation and their linear correlation over the pH range 3.0–8.0 was proven. The first stage (0–5 min) was thought to be dependent on the initial pH and was obviously faster than the second stage (10–45 min), whose rate increased linearly with S(IV) dosage. Phosphorus released high up to 24.3 μM at 90 min with 4 mM S(IV). Moreover, the mechanisms of FP activated sulfite autoxidation as well as phosphorus release were proposed, and the AO7 degradation pathway was investigated. This study provides a novel possibility for FP waste utilization and potential recovery of phosphorus resources.

Pure hydrotalcite (LDH) materials prepared from chemical reagents have been investigated as solid-phase phosphorus (P) inactivation materials (SPIM) to manage endogenous P loading in sediments. However, the efficacy and mechanism of LDH mixtures prepared by natural minerals and solid wastes in controlling sediment P release are unclear. Therefore, a Ca/Mg-Al-LDH (CMA-LDH) material was synthesized using sepiolite and cans, and its efficacy, mechanism, and ecological impact in controlling sediment P release were investigated. CMA-LDH-p was prepared as a control material using pure chemical reagents. The CMA-LDH and CMA-LDH-p were both composed of hydrotalcite and hydrocalumite. The maximum P adsorption capacity of CMA-LDH was 123.01 mg/g, comparable to that of CMA-LDH-p. The adsorbed P by CMA-LDH was mostly in the stable P form, accounting for 87.2 % of the total P. The adsorption capacity and immobilization ability of CMA-LDH for P were superior to other reported LDH-based SPIM. Both the CMA-LDH addition and capping successfully blocked sediment P release under anaerobic conditions. Passivation of mobile P in the sediment and DGT-labile P in the interstitial water was critical to preventing sediment P release by the CMA-LDH addition. The CMA-LDH capping inhibited sediment P release through the effective adsorption of CMA-LDH on DGT-labile P at the sediment/overlying water interface. The CMA-LDH addition and capping affected the abundance of microbial communities associated with iron and sulfur cycling, which might affect the stability of endogenous P. These results confirmed that CMA-LDH addition and capping treatments were effective methods for managing sediment P loading.

A crucial mechanism for the application of biochar in soil improvement is the direct release of nutrients from biochar. Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) ubiquitously exist in soil. However, the mechanism of LMWOAs-mediated release of nutrients from biochars remains little known. Ten biochars with different mineral element stoichiometric ratio were produced, and four LMWOAs [acetic (HAc), glycolic (GA), tartaric (TA), and citric acids (CA)] were employed, to enunciate the influence mechanism of LMWOAs on the release of phosphorus and potassium from biochar. The results showed that HAc suppressed the release of P from biochars, while TA and CA facilitated the release of P from biochars with high ratios of polyvalent metals to P. A new mechanism was proposed that the deprotonated HAc combined with the dissolved HPO 4 2− or H 2 PO 4 − to form a complex through hydrogen bond and cation bridging. The hydrophobic methyl group of HAc was exposed outside of the complex, which decreased the water-solubility of phosphate. Meanwhile, a high ratio of polyvalent metals to P benefited more P to combine with polyvalent metals, which decreased the water-solubility of P, but the deprotonated TA and CA are polyvalent anions that could substitute this part of P by anion exchange. Also, LMWOAs promoted the release of K from biochars with low K/(P + S) ratios, possibly due to unionized carboxyl of LMWOAs served as a hydrogen bond donor to displace K out of biochars. This study gives a deep understanding of the fate of biochar originated nutrients response to LMWOAs.

To solve both the problems of P deficiency in arable soil and excessive waste sludge disposal, we evaluated hydrothermal carbonization of sludge with the aim of recycling sludge P resources for soil amendment. In contrast with pyrochars obtained through pyrolysis, hydrochars generated from hydrothermal carbonization often feature variable properties and therefore require detailed characterization. In this study, sludge-derived hydrochars were evaluated to determine their P content and fractionation, release and availability of P, and P adsorption and desorption behavior. We also assessed changes in P availability after soil was amended with the hydrochars. Our results showed that the chars were rich in total P (up to 25,175 mg kg −1 ), but most of the free fractions were transformed to bound fractions, thereby reducing the available P concentrations. However, available P content was >417 mg kg −1 , which was far higher than soil demand. The hydrochars shifted from releasing to adsorbing P adsorbent when the environmental P concentration increased above 20 mg L −1 . The hydrochars showed a high phosphate adsorption capacity (up to 23,815 mg kg −1 ) and the adsorbed P could be readily released. The addition of 1% P-laden hydrochar significantly enhanced the soil available P content by 8.93 mg kg −1 . These findings have important implications for further development of hydrochar-based P carriers as a slow-releasing fertilizer. Core Ideas Charring transformed P from readily available fractions to moderately available ones. Sludge-derived hydrochars showed the best performance in long-term P release. Sludge-derived hydrochars had better P retention capacity than their feedstock. Applying the sludge-derived hydrochar improved the available P content of soil.

Five ferric-phosphate (Fe(III)Ps) with amorphous or crystalline structures were added to waste activated sludge (WAS) for anaerobic fermentation, aiming to investigate effects of Fe(III)Ps forms on phosphorus (P) release and the performance of WAS fermentation. The results revealed that the Fe(III) reduction rate of hexagonal-FePO 4 was faster than that of monoclinic-FePO 4 ·2H 2 O, thanks to its lower crystal field stabilization energy. FePO 4 ·nH 2 O was reduced to vivianite and part of the phosphate was released as orthophosphate (PO 4 -P). Giniite (Fe 5 (PO 4 ) 4 (OH) 3 ·2H 2 O) as an iron hydroxyphosphate was transformed to β Fe(III)Fe(II)(PO 4 )O-like compounds without PO 4 -P release. In addition, Fe(III)Ps had an adverse effect on the anaerobic fermentation of WAS. The specific hydrolysis rate constant and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) yield decreased by 38.4% and 41.9%, respectively, for the sludge sample with amorphous-FePO 4 ·3H 2 O, which dropped the most. This study provides new insights into various forms of Fe(III)Ps performance during anaerobic fermentation and is beneficial to enhancing P recovery efficiency.

Lanthanum (La)-modified biochar has been widely investigated as a phosphate adsorbent material. However, its effectiveness and mechanism as an amendment material to manage sediment internal phosphorus (P) release under anoxic conditions is still unclear. Thus, a lanthanum carbonate-modified shrimp shell biochar (LBC-1) was synthesized for controlling sediment P release, and the efficacy, mechanism, and sediment microbial community impact of LBC-1 under two application modes (addition and capping) were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity of LBC-1 for phosphate was 79.5 mg/g, superior to most La-modified biochar materials. The generation of LaPO 4 and Ca 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (OH) precipitates and the formation of inner-sphere complexes were the main adsorption mechanisms of LBC-1 for phosphate. Both the LBC-1 addition and capping treatments successfully blocked sediment P release under anoxic conditions, with the removal efficiencies of DGT-labile P in the overlying water being 97.7–99.7% and 97.5–99.5%, respectively. The conversion of the mobile P forms to the stable HCl-P form in sediments played an important role in the interception of internal P release by the LBC-1 addition treatment. Furthermore, the LBC-1 addition treatment also prevented internal P release by effectively adsorbing DGT-labile P in the interstitial water due to the excellent P adsorption capacity of LBC-1. However, the prevention of P release from sediments by the LBC-1 capping treatment was mainly attributed to the efficient adsorption of DGT-labile P by LBC-1 at the sediment/overlying water interface. The release of P driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was a key mechanism for the migration of P from sediment to interstitial water. The LBC-1 addition treatment reduced the relative abundance of SRB in the surface sediment and might inhibit the release of sediment P into the interstitial water, whereas the LBC-1 capping treatment had little effect on the relative abundance of SRB. In practice, the LBC-1 capping was easier to manipulate than the LBC-1 addition. These findings confirmed that sediment remediation using the LBC-1 capping treatment has great potential to manage internal P loading in eutrophic water bodies.

In order to facilitate recovery and enhance phosphate adsorption capacity of lanthanum (La)-based materials, magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @MgAl-LDH@La(OH) 3 (MMAL) composites with a hierarchical core-shell structure were synthesized. In the preparation process, citric acid played a vital role in the morphology control of La(OH) 3 , deciding the La content and phosphate adsorption capacity of materials. MMAL composites with a citric acid-to-La molar ratio of 0.375 (MMAL-0.375) exhibited a high adsorption capacity of 66.5 mg P/g, fast adsorption kinetics of 30 min, widely applicable pH range of 4.0–10.0, outstanding selective adsorption performance, and superior reusability in batch adsorption experiments. Moreover, the phosphate in the desorption solution could be concentrated by repeated use of desorption solution and recovered by using CaCl 2 . When the obtained composites were used for the sedimentary phosphorus sequestration and recovery, the results showed that the addition of MMAL-0.375 effectively reduced the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the overlying water. Accompanied by an evident increase in HCl-extractable phosphorus (HCl–P), mobile phosphorus (P mob ) in sediments was effectively reduced. This work indicates that the MMAL-0.375 composites can serve as an effective tool for the removal of phosphate from wastewater and the control of sedimentary phosphorus.

Erythromycin fermentation residue (EFR) is one kind of biological waste with high organic matter content. The recycling of EFR is not only beneficial to the environmental protection, but also to the economic development. In this study, the release of organic matter, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and heavy metals (HMs) from EFR under heat-activated persulfate (PS) oxidation conditioning was investigated. Results indicated that oxidation conditioning promoted the release of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). Heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning boosted the release of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia‑nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate‑nitrogen (NO 3 − -N) into the supernatant, as well as the decomposition of organic nitrogen (ON). Concurrently, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning facilitated the release of total phosphorus (TP), orthophosphate (PO 4 3− -P) and organic phosphorus (OP) into the supernatant, and the decomposition of OP. Furthermore, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning resulted in the increase of release efficiencies of HMs. Therefore, heat-activated PS oxidation conditioning was beneficial to the release of organic matter, nutrients and HMs.

This study investigated the efficacy and mechanisms of humic acid (HA)-loaded ferrihydrite (Fh) and magnetite (Mag) in suppressing phosphorus (P) release from sediment into the overlying water (OW) via direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and sediment amendment. The results showed that the direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and sediment amendment with HA-loaded ferrihydrite (HA-Fh) and magnetite (HA-Mag) effectively mitigated the sedimentary P migration into OW. Specifically, the average reduction efficiencies of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in OW were 94.6%, 74.6%, and 45.0% for HA-Fh under direct capping, fabric-wrapped capping, and amendment conditions, respectively. For HA-Mag, the corresponding efficiencies were 83.9%, 71.1%, and 47.1%. Under HA-Fh and HA-Mag capping, P in the sediment continued to mobilise into the pore water through the microbial and sulphide-mediated chemical reduction of iron (III) (hydr)oxides. However, the capping layers significantly reduced the concentrations of pore water SRP and labile P measured by diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) in the upper sediment. This reduction was crucial for effectively intercepting the sedimentary P migration into OW by HA-Fh and HA-Mag. Our study demonstrates that HA-Fh and HA-Mag are effective capping materials for managing the sediment-derived internal P loading. In other words, even after HA aging treatment, Fh and Mag still remain effective sediment phosphorus release control materials. In addition, the direct capping methods using HA-Fh and HA-Mag are promising due to their high control efficiency and ease of application in preventing P release from sediment into OW.

In this study, a ternary co-fermentation system was developed using iron-phosphorus precipitates (FePs)-bearing sludge, peroxydisulfate (PDS), and corn gluten meal (CGM) to activate PDS through a microbe-mediated endogenous iron cycle, thereby promoting phosphorus (P) release and acidogenesis. Fe(II) was released along with P via the dissolution of Fe(II)Ps, resulting from Fe(III)Ps bioreduction. Subsequently, the released Fe(II) induced PDS activation, which avoided the negative impact of external activators on P release by precipitation with P. The optimal PDS dosage for ternary co-fermentation was 0.2 mM/g TSS. At this dosage, P release efficiency increased from 27.3 % (sludge-only group) to 71.6 % and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) production increased from 41.0 (sludge-only group) to 158.5 mg COD/g VSS. SO 4 ·− and ·OH generated through PDS activation disintegrated sludge flocs to promote encapsulated Fe(II)Ps dissolution and organics release. The concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand in the sludge-CGM-PDS group was 4.4 times greater than that in the sludge-only group. The increased content and biodegradability of hydrolysates (e.g., protein-like, tryptophan-like, and tyrosine-like substances) contributed to the enrichment of hydrolytic-acidogenic bacteria, resulting in a relative abundance of 40.7 %. Unclassified_c__Ignavibacteria , Clostridium , and Rubrivivax were the dominant hydrolytic-acidogenic biomarkers, which enhanced the intracellular metabolisms of glycolysis, amino acid degradation, and acetogenesis, leading to notable increases in VFAs yields. The relative abundance of phosphate acetyltransferase, a key enzyme in acetate biosynthesis, increased by 8.9 %, thus facilitating acetogenesis. In addition, unclassified_c__Ignavibacteria , as putative iron reducers, were the primary microbes mediating endogenous iron reduction. This study provides valuable insights into the PDS self-activation mechanism and microfloral traits during ternary co-fermentation, contributing to the valorization of FePs-bearing sludge waste.

Endogenous phosphorus (P) release is one of the key factors leading to eutrophication of water body. Phosphorus in sediments is difficult to be removed or recovered due to its chemical stability and complex morphology. Meanwhile, lanthanide metal organic framework (La-MOF) shows high efficiency in phosphate adsorption, but faces challenges in solid-liquid separation due to its powder form. In this study, the phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB), Leclercia adecarboxylata L1–5, was used to transform some fractions of insoluble phosphorus in sediment into soluble phosphorus, and the La-MOF/Polypropylene (La-MOF/PP) fabric was innovatively prepared for phosphate adsorption. Solvothermal method was used for the preparation of La-MOF/PP fabric and the optimum synthesis time was 12 h. The best effect of phosphate removal was achieved when the La-MOF/PP fabric dosage was 1 g/L and the pH was 7. The regeneration efficiency of the material remained stable after five cycles of adsorption and desorption. Furthermore, the simulation results showed that PSB can release dissolved phosphate up to 5.40 mg P/L from sediment. After coupling with the La-MOF/PP fabric, the concentration of phosphate in the overlying water was significantly reduced to 0.38 mg P/L, which was much lower than that in the CK group (2.4 mg P/L). This study demonstrated that the coupled system of PSB and La-MOF/PP fabric could effectively reduce the sediment phosphate content, mitigate the negative impact of possible release of sediment phosphorus and degradation of the overlying water quality. It provided a promising technique for in-situ remediation of sediment phosphate.

Effects of fulvic acid (FA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the transformation of ferric phosphate (FePO 4 ) during anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge were investigated. Both FA and BSA promoted phosphorus (P) release from FePO 4 . A higher P release efficiency was achieved with FA addition compared with BSA at the same dose although BSA promoted iron (Fe) reduction more effectively. Both FA and BSA contributed to the enrichment of vivianite but hindered P re-precipitation with other ions, and FA affected more significantly. Microbial analysis revealed that FA contributed to the enrichment of iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) transporting electrons indirectly and increased the bioavailable Fe(III) via siderophores; BSA provided more electron donors, thereby enriched IRB transferring electrons directly to Fe(III). This study provides an in-depth understanding of Fe and P transformations in sludge bearing iron-phosphorus compounds and it is of practical value for P recovery as vivianite.
