Phosphomolybdic acid-catalyzed oxidation of waste starch: a new strategy for handling the OCC pulping wastewater

Qiao Yongzhen,Yang Weisheng,Wang Xiu,Jiao Liang,Yang Yiqin,Wang Shumei,Bian Huiyang,Dai Hongqi

When old corrugated cardboard (OCC) is returned to the paper mill for repulping and reuse, the starch, which is added to the paper surface as a reinforcement agent, is dissolved into the pulping wastewater. Most of the OCC pulping wastewater is recycled to save precious water resources; however, during the water recycling process, the accumulation of dissolved starch stimulates microbial reproduction, which causes poor water quality and putrid odor. This problem seriously affects the stability of the papermaking process and product quality. In this study, phosphomolybdic acid (H 3 PMo 12 O 40 , abbreviated as PMo 12 ) was utilized to catalyze the waste starch present in papermaking wastewater to monosaccharides, realizing the resource utilization of waste starch. The results showed that the optimized yield of total reducing sugar (78.68 wt%) and glycolic acid (12.83 wt%) was achieved at 145 °C with 30 wt% PMo 12 at pH 2, which is equivalent to 91.51 wt% starch recovered from wastewater for resource utilization. In addition, the regeneration of the reduced PMo 12 was realized by applying a potential of 1 V for 2 h. Overall, this study has theoretical significance and potential application value for resource utilization of waste starch in OCC pulping process and cleaner management of OCC waste paper.

Roles of degradation and charring in the flame retardancy of polyamide 56 induced by phosphomolybdates with different cations

Shiya Wang,Miaojun Xu,Wei Huang,Yingke Zhu,Juan Li,Peng Chen

Polyamide 56 (PA56) is a polyamide based on bio-based chemical and has attracted widespread attentions. In this paper, a series of phosphomolybdates (POMs) with Keggin structure were incorporated into PA56 to modify its flame-retardant properties. Different POMs show different effects on the flame-retardant efficiency in PA56. A small amount of 3 wt% sodium phosphomolybdate (PMoNa) or nickel phosphomolybdate (PMoNi) enable PA56 to achieve the UL-94 V-0 rating, while the samples containing other POMs are not classified in the test. The POMs promote the degradation of PA56 at low temperature and char formation at high temperature, and improves the thermal stability in air. Especially, the PMoNa and PMoNi restrain the release of heat, flammable volatiles and toxic gas by forming more char and changing the pyrolysis pathway during combustion, thus modify the flame retardancy of PA56 effectively. The mechanical properties are deteriorated more or less which need to be modified further.

Highly dispersed platinum and phosphomolybdic acid (PMo) on the UiO-66 metal–organic framework (MOF) for highly efficient and selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics

Kai Chen,Qingqing Liu,Zhiying Qiu,Huan Zhang,Ning Gong,Lihua Zhu

Pt-PMo@UiO-66 catalysts synthesized via a solvothermal method utilizing phosphomolybdic acid as a stabilizing agent exhibit exceptional catalytic performance in the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes. The nanostructure of the Pt-PMo@UiO-66 catalysts is demonstrated by ICP-OES, XRD, XPS, TEM, HRTEM, STEM-EDS and other characterization studies. The Pt nanoparticles (NPs) or clusters are mainly supported on the surface of UiO-66. There is a synergistic catalytic effect between Pt, phosphomolybdic acid and UiO-66, improving their catalytic hydrogenation performance (activity, selectivity and stability) for nitroarene hydrogenation. It is found that 0.32%Pt-PMo@UiO-66 has the best catalytic properties for nitroacetophenone hydrogenation, with 98.8% conversion and 99.6% selectivity to aminoacetophenone under relatively mild reaction conditions (1.75 h, 40 °C, 3.0 MPa H2). The turnover frequency (TOF) reaches 1498.0 h−1. The catalyst also shows high selectivity for the hydrogenation of halogen-containing nitroarenes without dehalogenation. The appropriate size of the Pt NPs (4.44 nm) and the electronic effect (electron transfer from Pt to Mo) improves the catalytic hydrogenation activity and selectivity of Pt-PMo@UiO-66 for the selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes under moderate reaction conditions.

Experimental and kinetic study of the conversion of waste starch into glycolic acid over phosphomolybdic acid

Yongzhen Qiao,Xiu Wang,Hongqi Dai

The starch used to enhance the paper surface dissolves in water during the production process and forms pollutants that accumulate in water when old corrugated cardboard (OCC) is returned to a paper mill for pulping and reuse. At present, anaerobic fermentation is widely used in the paper industry to treat starch-containing wastewater, producing biogas energy, or oxidative decomposition, which is a huge waste of valuable starch resources. Phosphomolybdic acid (PMo12) is a highly selective catalyst for the oxidation of carbohydrates; therefore, PMo12 can be envisaged as a suitable catalyst to convert waste starch into glycolic acid, an important high added-value chemical. In this paper, the catalytic oxidation technology of PMo12 was explored to produce glycolic acid from starch contained in OCC papermaking wastewater, and the kinetics and influencing factors of the catalytic oxidation reaction were studied. The results indicated that the PMo12-catalyzed oxidation of starch followed a first-order reaction; the reaction rate constant increased with increasing the temperature, the apparent activation energy of starch to monosaccharide was 104.7 kJ mol−1, the apparent activation energies of starch and monosaccharide to humins were 126.5 and 140.5 kJ mol−1, and the apparent activation energy of monosaccharide to glycolic acid was 117.2 kJ mol−1. The yields of monosaccharide and glycolic acid were 80.7 wt% and 12.9 wt%, respectively, and the utilization of starch resources was about 90.0 wt% under the following reaction conditions: temperature, 145 °C; reaction time, 120 min; pH, 2. Therefore, the feasibility of the PMo12-catalyzed oxidation of starch to produce high value-added glycolic acid is demonstrated, which has theoretical guiding significance and potential application value for the clean production and resource utilization of waste starch in the OCC papermaking process.

Selective isolation of rubidium with mesoporous silica loaded with ammonium phosphomolybdate via an in-pore crystallization reaction

Sirui Chen,Guoyuan Xiong,Shuangling Cui,Shufang Zhao,Jilong Lai,Xuening Zhang,Guangyong Zeng,Ying Zeng,Hao Shi

The scarcity of rubidium (Rb) in ore form makes it a valuable metal, prompting the need to develop reusable adsorbent materials for effective separation of rubidium (Rb + ) from salt lake brine, which holds significant importance. Herein, a novel Rb + selective composite adsorbent was prepared by in-pore crystallization. Macromesoporous silica was prepared using polyoxyethylene (10) octadecyl ether (Brij S10) as a templating agent and the effect of different templating agents on the pore size was investigated. An AMP-SiO 2 composite adsorbent for Rb + was obtained by “growing” ammonium phosphomolybdate on the macro-mesoporous silica by in-pore crystallization reaction. The results indicated that the adsorption of Rb + by the AMP-SO 2 adsorbent adhered to monolayer chemisorption , which was verified by fitting the adsorption data using the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, respectively. The loading of AMP was 29.4 %, which increased the adsorption capacity by 115 %. Furthermore, the adsorption rate of Rb + on AMP-SO 2 when interfering ions were present still reached 73.2 % (KCl), 76.4 % (CaCl 2 ), and 86.6 % (MgCl 2 ). Density functional theory simulation indicated that AMP-SiO2 exhibited a higher adsorption energy for Rb + (−9.79 eV) than K + , Li + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ . The Rb 3d and Mo 3d X-ray photoelectron spectra of AMP-SiO 2 before and after adsorption of Rb + , indicated that the ion-exchange process between rubidium and lattice cations is the controlling mechanism. In addition, AMP-SiO 2 also showed good regeneration performance and maintained a high adsorption rate after five adsorption-resolution experiments. In summary, the AMP-SiO 2 composite adsorbent can effectively expose adsorption sites and improve mass transfer efficiency, and has significant potential for future application in rubidium separation and extraction.

Selective Oxidation Cleavage of Cα–Cβ Bonds between Lignin Aromatic Units via Phosphomolybdic Acid-Ionic Liquid

Dingkai Wang,Mingyu Cui,Wei Zhao,Jin Zhang,Meiling Liu,Shanglong Chen,Xutang Liu,Yanjun Li,Shangshang Ma,Xian-Yong Wei

Lignin, the most abundant renewable resource of aromatics in nature, is recognized as an alternative to fossil-based fuels and chemicals. In this study, a phosphomolybdic acid-ionic liquid (PMA-IL) [BSHMIM]H2PMo12O40 was synthesized and used as a catalyst for further oxidative depolymerization of extracted lignin to prepare valuable chemicals. Under optimized conditions, the conversion of lignin reached 61.33%, and the total yield of target products (vanillin, vanillic acid, and methyl vanillate) was 28.00 mg·g–1, where the selectivity of methyl vanillate reached 56.43%. The liquid products and residues obtained under the optimum conditions were analyzed, further confirming the advantages of PMA-IL compared with single PMA. In addition, this method also has an excellent catalytic effect for other types of lignin and presents a good substrate applicability. Finally, based on the research results of model compounds, the possible reaction pathway of the formation of vanillin, vanillic acid, and methyl vanillate was proposed.

Different Ligand Functionalized Al-Based MOFs as a Support for Impregnation of Heteropoly Acid for Efficient Esterification Reactions

Qiuyun Zhang,Mei Deng,Xingxin Li,Nian Xu,Ting Li,Qing Liu,Zhengjun Liu,Yutao Zhang

The development of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)–based heterogeneous catalysts with both Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites has proved to be promising and useful because they offer an economical route to synthesize environment-friendly biofuels. Here, a series of Al-based MOFs, functionalized by single -H, -NH 2 , and -NO 2 groups, are successfully synthesized and applied as supports to load phosphomolybdic acid (HPMo) through a facile one-pot hydrothermal method, by forming composites of HPMo@Al-MOFs-X (where X = -H, -NH 2 , and -NO 2 ), and it was used to esterify fatty acids into biodiesel. The structural features of the prepared hybrid materials were evaluated by various techniques, including XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM-EDS, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, TG, and XPS. The material characterization revealed that the catalytic behavior of the prepared HPMo@AlB composite is better than HPMo@AlB-NH 2 , HPMo@AlB-NO 2 , and pure AlB. The optimized conversion of oleic acid (OA) is 97.5% under the optimized reaction conditions. Moreover, the composite maintained above 90% conversion after nine cycles and demonstrated excellent reusability. This outstanding catalytic activity and stability is mainly attributed to the large specific surface area (138.4 m 2 /g), appropriate pore volume (0.47 cm 3 /g), and mesoscale pore size (17.7 nm) of HPMo@AlB composite that reduced the mass transfer resistance, high total acidity, and the synergistic effect of Lewis acid and Brønsted acid sites and ensures efficient esterification. The present research introduces an important reference for advancing high-performance MOFs-based hybrid materials to industrialize biofuels production.

Phosphomolybdic acid immobilized on ionic liquid-modified hexagonal boron nitride for oxidative desulfurization of fuel

Haiyan Ji,Haitao Ju,Rong Lan,Peiwen Wu,Jia Sun,Yanhong Chao,Suhang Xun,Wenshuai Zhu,Huaming Li

Hexagonal boron nitride supported catalysts have been well-developed in catalytic desulfurization, but struggle from the drain of catalytically active sites. Herein, an ionic liquid functionalized BN is constructed for stabilization of catalytic sites (phosphomolybdic acid, HPMo). A stable and well-dispersed supported catalyst was successfully obtained, which was confirmed by a series of characterizations. Detailed oxidative desulfurization experiments showed that the IL-induced high dispersity of the HPMo indicated a promising catalytic performance; meanwhile, the IL-assisted stability dominated an enhanced recycling performance. Additionally, the satisfying catalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity to numerous sulfur compounds and a fine resistance to interferents. Moreover, the possible reaction process was studied by GC-MS.

Phosphomolybdic acid encapsulated in ZIF-8-based porous ionic liquids for reactive extraction desulfurization of fuels

Ning Yang,Linjie Lu,Linhua Zhu,Peiwen Wu,Duanjian Tao,Xiaowei Li,Jiahong Gong,Linlin Chen,Yanhong Chao,Wenshuai Zhu

Porous ionic liquids (PILs), with permanent porosity and fluidity, have been drawing great attention in theoretical research and application. Herein, a novel PIL (HPMo@ZIF-8-PIL) was fabricated by dispersing a phosphomolybdic acid-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) into an ionic liquid for deep reactive extraction desulfurization. Size calculation results show that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonylimide) ([Emim][NTf2]) with larger ion sizes cannot occupy pores of ZIF-8. In detail, the structure along with permanent porosity was well characterized by gas absorption and molecule displacement experiments, and it was found that HPMo@ZIF-8-PIL can not only promote the dispersion of the catalytically active sites but also retain the good liquidity and excellent extraction ability of ionic liquids. At room temperature, 100% removal of dibenzothiophene sulfur in a model oil could be achieved within 2 h using HPMo@ZIF-8-PIL and hydrogen peroxide as the catalyst and oxidant, respectively. Besides, the successful preservation of porosity increases the probability of contact between the oxidant and active sites, which is also in favor of the promotion of desulfurization performance. This work offers a new method for the modification of porous frameworks to construct PIL catalysts, which will provide a new insight into the application of PILs.

Phosphomolybdic acid-doped polypyrrole as electrode for integrated hydrogel supercapacitors

Liang Caiying,Lan Pei,Feng Shuhuan,Xu Tengfei,Dong Liubing,Zhao Jianhao,Rong Jianhua

Integrated hydrogel supercapacitors have attracted increasing attention owing to their low interfacial contact resistance and excellent electrochemical performance even under folding and bending. Herein, phosphomolybdic acid-doped polypyrrole (PPy) was deposited in situ on the surface of a hydroxypropyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (HPC/PVA) hydrogel to fabricate integrated hydrogel supercapacitors. The negatively charged phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ) was anchored onto the positively charged PPy chain to prevent its dissolution in the electrolyte thereby enhancing its pseudocapacitive performance. PMo 12 also can dope and modify PPy, providing additional pseudocapacitance and thereby improving the energy storage capacity of the supercapacitor. The supercapacitor achieved a high areal specific capacitance (350 mF cm −2 at 0.5 mA cm −2 ) and demonstrated a remarkable energy density (24.0 \(\upmu\) Wh cm −2 at 1000 \(\upmu\) W cm −2 ). After 1000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 mA cm −2 , it retained 71.3% of its initial capacitance and maintained 98% Coulombic efficiency.

In situ synthesis of polyoxometalate-derived MoS2/phosphomolybdic acid composites for highly sensitive NO2 detection

Liwei Zhang,Tianqi Wang,Ying Yang,Meijie Wei,Feng Li,Hui Yu,Xiangting Dong

MoS 2 is a promising gas sensing material due to its low resistance and low operating temperature. But the sensitivity of MoS 2 is limited by fast electron-hole complexation. In this work, phosphomolybdic acid (PMo 12 ) was used as precursor. After sulfurizing by one-step hydrothermal method , the generated MoS 2 and unspent PMo 12 can in-situ form MoS 2 /PMo 12 composite nanospheres . The gas sensing performances of the composite were comprehensively investigated. By adjusting hydrothermal reaction temperature, optimized sensitivity (MoS 2 /PMo 12 -240) to NO 2 gas can be gained. At a low operating temperature of 80 °C, the optimized response value to 100 ppm NO 2 gas is 2.466, which is higher than most reported MoS 2 -based NO 2 sensors. Moreover, MoS 2 /PMo 12 -240 composite also exhibits good selectivity, repeatability, long-term stability and humidity resistance. The mechanism of sensing performance enhancement was also analyzed and discussed. As a semiconductor-like material, PMo 12 can form heterojunction together with MoS 2 . The valence band of PMo 12 can capture the holes in MoS 2 and effectively suppresses electron-hole complexation. Thus the sensing performance can be improved. This work provides a new strategy for designing and constructing high performance sulfide composite gas sensors by introducing POMs .
