Novel functionalized polysulfone with high local density of sulfonic acid groups, N , N -bis(sulfopropyl)aminyl-4-phenyl polysulfone or O , O′ -bis(sulfopropyl)resorcinol-5-yl-4-phenyl polysulfone (PSF-X-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H, X = N or O) are synthesized. These polymers are synthesized by bromination of polysulfone followed by Suzuki cross-coupling reaction to graft the aminophenyl groups and the dimethoxyphenyl groups onto the polymeric backbone, followed by introduction of the sulfopropyl groups via sultone ring-opening reaction. In addition, the composite membrane of PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H is also synthesized for comparison. The maximum proton conductivity of composite PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H reaches 46.66 mS cm −1 at 95 °C and 90% RH, higher than PSF-O-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (42.06 mS cm −1 ) and PSF-N-C 3 H 6 SO 3 H (38.76 mS cm −1 ). Meanwhile, the composite exhibits compromised water uptake and swelling ratio, and low methanol permeability . The excellent overall performance of the composite is attributed to phase-separation between the hydrophilic and the hydrophobic subphases, and the hydrogen-bonding network developed in the hydrophilic subphases.

In this study, the sulfonic group was introduced to prepare high-performance Eucommia ulmoides lignin-based biochar, which was used to remove tetracycline hydrochloride. The BET area (2008 m 2 g −1 ) of sulfonated biochar was twice that of unmodified biochar. Through XRD and Raman analysis, the synergetic pyrolysis mechanism of the sulfonic group in the formation of the porous structure was discussed. Sulfonated biochar had excellent adsorption performance for tetracycline hydrochloride (Q m : 1163 mg g −1 ), while the adsorption performance of unmodified biochar was about only one-fourth (Q m : 277.7 mg g −1 ) of that. The adsorption of tetracycline hydrochloride by the sulfonated biochar was spontaneously endothermic and conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption process was confirmed by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Moreover, the sulfonic group on the sulfonated biochar significantly promoted the formation of the hydrogen bond and greatly improved the adsorption performance.

The composite membranes that combine pore-filling with a matrix having precisely assembled sulfonated groups are designed here for use in the applications of direct methanol fuel cells. A porous crystalline poly(ether ether ketone)/sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) blended matrix with continuous pore structures is first fabricated using a phase inversion process. Solvent treatment of the porous matrix is then employed to induce the enrichment of sulfonated groups at the pore surfaces, based on the interaction between the solvent and functional groups in polymer chains. This strategy effectively shortens the proton transport path, accelerating the proton transfer rate. The pores of the matrix are then filled with Nafion ionomers, resulting in a reinforced composite membrane consisting of interconnected hydrophilic domains in a fuel-insulating rigid matrix. A single cell made using the novel composite membrane exhibits a relatively high power density of 91.7 mW/cm2 and an open circuit voltage of 0.67 V at 70 °C using 10 M methanol, significantly higher than a test device made using Nafion 117. This work supplies a simple and highly efficient strategy to address the low proton conductivity that is normally seen in composite membranes made using pore-filling technology.
