The traditional seed preparation method of polystyrene was improved. Firstly, low molecular weight polystyrene seed microspheres with molecular weight of about 10,000 were successfully prepared by adding copolymer inhibitor and adjusting initiator azodiisobutyronitrile. Then, the polystyrene-divinylbenzene microspheres with large particle size were successfully prepared by the method of seed swelling polymerization, using divinylbenzene as crosslinking agent. Polystyrene-divinylbenzene polymer microspheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and gel permeation chromatography . The results showed that the molecular weight of polystyrene seed microspheres decreased with the increase of initiator AIBN dosage. Catechol and potassium iodide could significantly reduce the molecular weight of polystyrene seed microspheres. The size of the expanded microspheres prepared from low molecular weight seeds was controllable (up to 10 μm), with uniform particle size distribution and good monodispersity. Large size polystyrene-divinylbenzene microspheres can be used as stationary phase filler for reversed-phase chromatography, and have a good effect in the purification of industrial phytol . Sulfonated-polystyrene-divinylbenzene can be used as hydrophilic chromatographic filler to separate inosine and uridine . In addition, the baseline separation of cytosine , uracil and thymine was successfully achieved by sulfonated-polystyrene-divinylbenzene column in sodium phosphate buffer/acetonitrile mobile phase .

Natural wood has garnered significant interest in the field of solar steam generation (SSG), due to its merits of widespread availability, hydrophilicity, and inherent porous structure. However, the limited capillary water content and high evaporation enthalpy of wood hinder the evaporation rates of wood-based SSG. In this study, a sulfonated porous wood with high capillary water content and small evaporation enthalpy was developed for efficient solar evaporation. The relatively hydrophobic lignin and hemicellulose were initially removed to enhance capillary effects, achieving a water absorption rate of 5.2 g g−1. Subsequently, sulfonic acid groups were grafted onto the wood surface to weaken the hydrogen bond interaction between water molecules, and thereby reducing the evaporation enthalpy to 1197 J g−1. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the sulfonated wood surface contains abundant hydrogen bonding sites, which thermodynamically enhance the escape behavior of water molecules. As a result, the all-biomass SSG demonstrated an evaporation rate of up to 3.4 kg m−2 h−1 when combined with bamboo carbon black as a photothermal material, representing the highest evaporation rate for wood-based solar evaporation to date. This work provides an effective strategy for efficient wood-based solar steam generation.

Nafion membranes are widely used as proton exchange membranes, but their proton conductivity deteriorates in high-temperature environments due to the loss of water molecules. To address this challenge, we propose the utilization of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) as a potential solution. PAFs exhibit remarkable characteristics, such as a high specific surface area and porosity, and their porous channels can be post-synthesized. Here, a novel approach was employed to synthesize a PAF material, designated as PAF-45D, which exhibits a specific surface area of 1571.9 m2·g−1and possesses the added benefits of facile synthesis and a low cost. Subsequently, sulfonation treatment was applied to PAF-45D in order to introduce sulfonic acid groups into its pores, resulting in the formation of PAF-45DS. The successful incorporation of sulfonic groups was confirmed through TG, IR, and EDS analyses. Furthermore, a novel Nafion composite membrane was prepared by incorporating PAF-45DS. The Nyquist plot of the composite membranes demonstrates that the sulfonated PAF-45DS material can enhance the proton conductivity of Nafion membranes at high temperatures. Specifically, under identical film formation conditions, doping with a 4% mass fraction of PAF-45DS, the conductivity of the Nafion composite membrane increased remarkably from 2.25 × 10−3S·cm−1to 5.67 × 10−3S·cm−1, nearly 2.5 times higher. Such promising and cost-effective materials could be envisioned for application in the field of Nafion composite membranes.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)-based implants have become popular in hard tissue orthopedic and dental field. However, its inherent bio-inertness limited its applications for bone repair/substitution of osteoporosis patients, with poor osteogenesis capability. In order to ameliorate their bioactivity, the 3D porous PEEK substrate was created by sulfonate processing, and the substrate was subsequently incorporated with strontium (Sr) through a hydrothermal reaction in Sr(OH) 2 solutions. The adiponectin (APN) protein membrane was deposited on the substrate via polydopamine-assisted deposition. Surface characterization results disclosed that the nanostructures had been formed on sPEEK-Sr-APN surafces, and APN coatings on the substrates could adjust Sr release rate and further mediate cell-material interactions. in vitro experiments indicated that the cellular effects (proliferation and differentiation) of MC3T3-E1 were significantly increased with Sr/APN coordinated regulation. This study provides bioactive Sr and APN as promising active components for bio-functional bone regeneration/substitution, and optimizes the osteointegration of PEEK implants in clinic.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is widely used in orthopedics due to its good mechanical properties and biocompatibility; however, its bioactivity and osseointegration ability are poor. In this article, PEEK materials were dual-modified by surface sulfonation treatment and the loading of active hydrogels (phosphorylated gelatin/chitosan/hydroxyapatite) to improve their bioactivity and osseointegration. Initially, a microstimulated sulfonation process was employed to construct an optimized porous structure on the PEEK surface, with a porosity of 54.63% and an average pore size of 3.38 μm, which significantly improved hydrophilicity and promoted the adhesion and growth of osteoblasts. Subsequently, utilizing the adhesive properties of polydopamine (PDA), the phosphorylated gelatin/chitosan/hydroxyapatite composite hydrogel (PG/CS/HA hydrogel) was loaded onto the surface of SPEEK, resulting in the construction of a highly active and strongly osteogenic SPEEK-PG/CS/HA material. The results showed that the dual modification of the porous sulfonated structure and bioactive hydrogel significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity, biocompatibility, mineralization ability, and osseointegration of the PEEK. Specifically, the cell proliferation capacity increased by 32% after 7 days of coculture on MC3T3-E1 cells; the alizarin red staining rate after 14 days of coculture reached 72.49%, representing a 111% improvement; and the expression levels of osteogenic genes ALP, OPN, and RUNX2 increased by 132%, 151%, and 131%, respectively, demonstrating excellent in vitro osteogenic induction potential. The SPEEK-PG/CS/HA material effectively solves the problem of bioinertia in the PEEK material, offering a novel modification strategy for orthopedic implants.
