Cu(II) is generally considered to be a poor activator for PMS decomposition, thus the potential impact of trace Cu(II) on PMS induced oxidation of typical pollutants is always overlooked. In this study, we reported that trace Cu(II) could significantly promote PMS induced degradation of four selected sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), namely, sulfamehoxazole (SMX), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), and sulfamonomethoxine (SMM). Different from conventional PMS-induced oxidation process, high-valent Cu(III) was ascertained as the primary reactive intermediate for SAs degradation, which was confirmed by raman tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). High concentrations of Cu(II) or PMS were beneficial to degradation of the selected contaminants. In PMS/Cu(II) oxidation system, all the selected SAs could undergo several different degradation pathways including continuous oxidation of aniline group, hydroxylation and S–N bond cleavage. In particular, for six-membered SAs, such as SMZ and SMM, a SO 2 extrusion pathway was also detected. The potential mechanism for Cu(III) formation was also proposed, which was believed to be highly related to the nature of the SAs. Hydroxylamine-SAs (N 4 –OH–SAs), generated from direct PMS oxidation of SAs, was deduced as the “promoter” for the whole oxidation process. And the generation of Cu(III) was likely to proceed through the interaction between PMS and Cu(I), which possibly derived from the reduction of Cu(II) by N 4 –OH–SAs. The results obtained in this study validated the contribution of Cu(III) to the elimination of pollutants and expanded our understanding of the oxidation process of PMS in the presence of trace amounts of Cu(II).

The oxidative mineralization of sulfanilamide drugs (SAs) using micro-size zero-valent iron (mZVI) cooperated with a citric acid buffer solution was evaluated. In this study SM2, SMX, and SD could be removed at 66%, 89%, and 83%, respectively, in a 0.5% Bi/mZVI+CA+NaCA system within 2 h. Based on our analysis, the produced ·OH could be ascribed from the complexation between citrate iron (Fe(II)[Cit]−) and the generated H2O2resulting from the activation of O2on the mZVI surface in the Bi/mZVI+CA+NaCA system, further inducing the mineralization of antibiotics. The related possible degradation pathways were proposed. Two similar degradation pathways of SM2, SMX, and SD in the mixed liquid, including hydroxylation and SO2extrusion, were solved. Meanwhile, there was an additional proposed degradation pathway for SMX to be degraded more effectively, as reflected in the opening of the N-O bond on the benzene ring. Therefore, this work provides an experimental basis and theoretical support for the efficient treatment of antibiotic wastewater in real industry by using an iron-based method. Keywords:sulfanilamide drugs;Bi/mZVI;antibiotic;oxidative degradation

In this study, a novel Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/g-C3N4magnetic composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized, tailored specifically for the visible light-driven photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics, more precisely, sulfamethazine (SMZ). To analyze the fabricated samples, characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis) were systematically employed. The composite showcased efficient visible-light absorption and charge separation, with its peak photocatalytic performance recorded at a solution pH value of 6.0. Significantly, the Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/g-C3N4magnetic composite photocatalyst displayed excellent stability and recyclability, consistently maintaining a high degradation efficiency of over 97% even after five consecutive cycles. Further experimentation with radical scavengers confirmed a significant decrease in photocatalytic activity, establishing that superoxide radicals (•O2−) and photo-generated holes (h+) are the primary active species during the degradation of SMZ. Overall, it provides a crucial understanding regarding the photocatalytic decomposition of sulfonamide antibiotics using magnetic composite photocatalysts. It also emphasizes the promising potential of the Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/g-C3N4composite for tangible applications in environmental remediation. Keywords:visible light;photocatalysis;Fe3O4/Ag3PO4/g-C3N4;sulfonamide

This work examined the occurrence characteristics and ecological risks of 31 antibiotics across five classes and seven ARGs in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake. A total of 27 antibiotics, spanning four classes, were detected in the surface waters of Gaoyou Lake, with an overall concentration ranging from 57.5 to 114 ng/L and an average of 78.8 ng/L. Sulfonamide antibiotics exhibited the highest average concentration at 32.7 ng/L. Spatial analysis revealed that antibiotic concentration levels in the western region of the lake were higher than those in other areas. Similarly, ARGs were most abundant in this area, with sulfonamide ARGs demonstrating a notably higher mean abundance than other ARGs. Correlation analysis revealed strong positive associations between sul1 and several antibiotics, including sulfadimidine, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, lincomycin, clindamycin, erythromycin, and intl1 ( P < 0.05), with intra-group correlations among sulfonamide ARGs exceeding those between different ARG groups. Ecological risk assessment indicated that erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole presented medium risks, whereas roxithromycin, azithromycin, and lincomycin were associated with low risks to aquatic organisms. The ecological risk proportions across monitoring sites were primarily low (10.6%) and moderate (16.7%), with no high-risk areas identified and 72.7% presenting no risk. The cumulative ecological risk quotient (RQ cum ) suggested a medium-risk level at all surveyed sites.

Wetland plants are proven to perform well in water treatment . However, the phytoremediation capability of wetland plants for antibiotics, especially the uptake and metabolism involved in vivo, is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the removal, uptake, and specific metabolism by Canna indica and Iris pseudacorus of five sulfonamides (SAs) using hydroponic experiments for seven days. The removal of SAs ranged from 15.2% to 98.4% in the planted groups, whereas that in the unplanted control group was much lower (12.6%–39.9%). The accumulation of SAs in plants was in a concentration-dependent manner via an active process and is not a major removal mechanism (constituted 0.31%–3.62% of the total removal load in plant system). The results also showed differences in the removal and accumulation by plant species of SAs. The acetyl conjugates (N-acetyl SA) were formed, which significantly enhanced the uptake of SAs ( P < 0.001) except sulfapyridine. The concentrations of N-acetyl SA accounted for only 0.4%–23.8% of the total SAs distribution in plants, suggesting the involvement of other metabolism pathways. Methylation and oxidation metabolites were identified in plant tissues and no SA-induced growth stress occurred, revealing that antibiotic metabolism in vivo should be associated with the ability of wetland plants to accumulate antibiotic and tolerate antibiotic stress.

Abstract Using MIL-101(Fe) as the source of carbon and Fe, a magnetic porous carbon (MPC) material with Fe 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated in porous carbon was prepared through one-pot pyrolysis under N 2 atmosphere. With MPC as adsorption material, a stir bar sorptive-dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) method was proposed to extract and preconcentrate sulfonamides (SAs) prior to HPLC-DAD determination. To investigate their extraction ability, different MPC materials were prepared under different carbonization temperatures (600, 700, 800, 900, and 1000 °C). The material prepared under 900 °C (MPC-900) exhibited the highest extraction ability for SAs. The as-prepared MPC materials were also characterized by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, and other techniques. The main parameters that affect extraction were systematically studied. Under optimal conditions, favorable linearity ( R 2 ≥ 0.9938) and detection limits (0.02–0.04 ng mL −1 ) of sulfonamides were obtained. The average recoveries for spiked milk and lake water samples ranged from 76.9 to 109% and from 75.4 to 118% with RSDs of 3.10–9.63% and 1.71–11.3%, respectively. Sulfameter and sulfisoxazole were detected in milk sample. Sulfisoxazole was detected in the lake water sample. The MPC-900 material demonstrated excellent reusability. It can be reused 24 times with peak areas having no obvious decline. The method can be applied to extract ultra-trace compounds in complex sample matrices. Graphical abstract

Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) have significant impacts on soil physicochemical properties, subsequently altering the fate of contaminants in soil. However, studies investigating the environmental behavior of antibiotics in soil subjected to FTCs are limited. This study investigated the effects of FTCs on the adsorption and transport of two commonly used sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sulfapyridine (SPY), in soil. The results revealed that FTCs alter the adsorption behavior of SMX and SPY on the soil. Initially, after 1 FTC, the adsorption of both SMX and SPY decreased; however, subsequently, this adsorption gradually increased as the number of FTCs increased. This is because, during the FTCs, the increased soil pH hindered the adsorption of SAs by intensifying electrostatic repulsion between anionic SAs and soil particles. Subsequently, the increases in clay content, specific surface area (SA), small pores, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) provided more adsorption sites, overriding the initial pH effects and ultimately dominating the adsorption process. FTCs altered soil properties, which not only changed the adsorption of SAs but also induced the alteration of pore structure and the generation of preferential flow. During the vertical transport process, such changes in pore pathways played a dominant role, facilitating SMX and SPY transport in soil. The addition of heavy metals (Cd 2+ and Cu 2+ ) contributed to facilitating the transport of SMX and SPY in both unfrozen and freeze-thaw-treated soil columns. In the context of global climate change, this study offers valuable insights into the fate and environmental risks associated with pollutants in soil.

Sulfonamides (SAs) in the aquatic environment are a serious threat to human health, environmental ecology and water reuse . Natural organic matter and SAs are known to compete for adsorption sites on adsorbent. SAs adsorption by high silica ZSM-5 (HSZSM-5) affected by humic monomers remains unclear. The impact of representative humic monomers (HMs) (caffeic acid (CA) and vanillin (VNL)) on the sorption of SAs by HSZSM-5 at different pH was evaluated for the first time. Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to obtain the group transformations. The presence of HM did not change the main adsorption mechanism of SAs on pristine and loaded HSZSM-5 (pH-dependent and hydrophobic interaction). Lewis acid-base electron interaction , π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA), and H-bonding had a positive contribution to the adsorption of SAs by HSZSM-5 after HM coating. However, HM coating and competition reduced the adsorption capacity of HSZSM-5 towards SAs. In co-introduction system of HM and SAs, the reaction between C O in HM and N–H in SAs resulted in SAs and HM co-adsorbed on HSZSM-5. Meanwhile, CA concentration <20 mg/L was in favor of SMX adsorption. The findings give an insight into the interactions among HM and SAs in high silica zeolites adsorption system, thereby improving SAs removal in actual water.

Developing a simple and efficient method for removing organic micropollutants from aqueous systems is crucial. The present study describes the preparation and application, for the first time, of novel MXene-decorated bismuth ferrite nanocomposites (BiFeO3/MXene) for the removal of six sulfonamides including sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfathiazole (STZ), sulfamerazine (SMZ), sulfamethazine (SMTZ), sulfamethoxazole (SMXZ) and sulfisoxazole (SXZ). The properties of BiFeO3/MXene are enhanced by the presence of BiFeO3nanoparticles, which provide a large surface area to facilitate the removal of sulfonamides. More importantly, BiFeO3/MXene composites demonstrated remarkable sulfonamide adsorption capabilities compared to pristine MXene, which is due to the synergistic effect between BiFeO3and MXene. The kinetics and isotherm models of sulfonamide adsorption on BiFeO3/MXene are consistent with a pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. BiFeO3/MXene had appreciable reusability after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Furthermore, BiFeO3/MXene is stable and retains its original properties upon desorption. The present work provides an effective method for eliminating sulfonamides from water by exploiting the excellent texture properties of BiFeO3/MXene.Keywords:MXene;bismuth ferrite;nanocomposite;sulfonamide;adsorption

The photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides in aqueous TiO2 suspension under UV irradiation has been investigated using potassium ferrate as electron acceptors. The results showed that the stability of Fe(VI) is dependent on pH significantly, and the stability reduces obviously in the presence of UV-TiO2. The experiments indicated that Fe(VI) could effectively scavenge the conduction band electrons from the surface of TiO2. The photocatalytic oxidation of sulfonamides with Fe(VI) was found to be much faster than that without Fe(VI). The SD, SM, and SMX concentration was greatly reduced by 89.2%, 83.4%, and 82.0%, respectively, after 10 min with UV-TiO2-Fe(VI), comparing to 65.2%, 66.0%, and 71.9%, respectively, with Fe(VI) only in the dark and 71.3%, 72.7%, and 76.0%, respectively, with UV-TiO2. The pH value of solution significantly influenced the sulfonamides degradation in UV-TiO2-Fe(VI) system. The degradation amount of sulfonamides after 10 min was a maximum at pH 7. The intermediate products of sulfonamides oxidation by UV-TiO2-Fe(VI) were analysed by LC-HESI-MS-MS and the results suggested that a majority of sulfonamides turned into large-molecule products without complete mineralization.

Abstract Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are serious pollutants to ecosystems and environments. Previous studies showed that microbial degradation of SAs such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX) proceeds via a sad -encoded oxidative pathway, while the sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase gene, sul , is responsible for SA resistance. However, the co-occurrence of sad and sul genes, as well as how the sul gene affects SMX degradation, was not explored. In this study, two SMX-degrading bacterial strains, SD-1 and SD-2, were cultivated from an SMX-degrading enrichment. Both strains were Paenarthrobacter species and were phylogenetically identical; however, they showed different SMX degradation activities. Specifically, strain SD-1 utilized SMX as the sole carbon and energy source for growth and was a highly efficient SMX degrader, while SD-2 did could not use SMX as a sole carbon or energy source and showed limited SMX degradation when an additional carbon source was supplied. Genome annotation, growth, enzymatic activity tests, and metabolite detection revealed that strains SD-1 and SD-2 shared a sad -encoded oxidative pathway for SMX degradation and a pathway of protocatechuate degradation. A new sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase gene, sul918 , was identified in strain SD-1, but not in SD-2. Moreover, the lack of sul918 resulted in low SMX degradation activity in strain SD-2. Genome data mining revealed the co-occurrence of sad and sul genes in efficient SMX-degrading Paenarthrobacter strains. We propose that the co-occurrence of sulfonamide-resistant dihydropteroate synthase and sad genes is crucial for efficient SMX biodegradation. Key points
•
Two sulfamethoxazole-degrading strains with distinct degrading activity, Paenarthrobacter sp. SD-1 and Paenarthrobacter sp. SD-2, were isolated and identified.
•

•
A new plasmid-borne SMX resistance gene (sul918) of strain SD-1 plays a crucial role in SMX degradation efficiency.

The mobility and deposition of sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) in soil porous media may be impacted by the presence of rhamnolipid (a typical biosurfactant), which is ubiquitous in the natural environment. Herein, the transport characteristics of various SAs, such as sulfamerazine (SMZ), sulfamethazine (SMT), and sulfanilamide (SNM) in soil columns with rhamnolipid, were explored. The mobility of SAs in the soil columns was in the sequence of SNM > SMT > SMZ. The observation was mainly due to the differences in the hydrophobic properties of various antibiotics. Interestingly, rhamnolipid inhibited the mobility of the three SAs over a broad solution pH range (5.0–9.0) primarily because of the interactions between the hydrophobic groups of the deposited rhamnolipid on the soil surfaces and parts of SAs molecules (i.e., rhamnolipid acted as a bridging agent between soil and antibiotic). Furthermore, at a given rhamnolipid concentration, the inhibitory effect of rhamnolipid on SMZ transport was the greatest among the three antibiotics due to SMZ’s greatest hydrophobicity . Additionally, the transport-inhibition influence of rhamnolipid declined as the solution pH values rose. This phenomenon was attributed to the decline of the bridge effects induced by the decreased adsorbed rhamnolipid on soil surfaces. Innovative findings from this study provide helpful information regarding the contribution of biosurfactants on the environmental behaviors of these ubiquitous antibiotic contaminants in soil-water systems.
