Urea-Functionalized MIL-101(Cr)@AC as a New Adsorbent to Remove Sulfacetamide in Wastewater Treatment

Qiqi Zhou,Guijian Liu

The presence of sulfa antibiotics in water is becoming increasingly serious and actions need to be taken to establish an effective wastewater purification process for their removal. MIL-101(Cr)@AC was prepared by incorporating activated carbon into the MIL-101(Cr) framework to reduce unused voids in MIL-101. MIL-101(Cr)@AC has a high specific surface area and was successfully synthesized and activated with urea. In this study, the adsorptive removal of the sulfonamide antibiotic, sulfacetamide (SA), from wastewater was studied using urea-activated MIL-101(Cr)@AC for the first time. High SA adsorption efficiency was observed, and an adsorption equilibrium was reached within approximately 60 min. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm records were best fitted using the Langmuir model and a pseudo-second-order model, respectively. Therefore, according to the result of adsorption, a possible mechanism was proposed. Hydrogen bonding between −NH2 on the grafted urea-MIL-101(Cr)@AC and −SO2 groups in SA resulted in an increase in adsorption efficiency. In addition, urea-MIL-101(Cr)@AC exhibited excellent reusability, which is attractive for potential applications in adsorbing SA from wastewater.

Insights into antimicrobial agent sulfacetamide transformation during chlorination disinfection process in aquaculture water

Yaoguang Guo,Zhiyuan Liu,Xiaoyi Lou,Changling Fang,Pu Wang,Genying Wu,Jie Guan

Antibiotic addition and chlorination are two common processes in fishery culture. Antibiotic residues not only pollute aquaculture water, but are also one of the potential precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during chlorination. The degradation kinetics, products identification and reaction mechanism of sulfacetamide (SFA), a new sulfonamides antibiotics, and potential formation of haloacetic acids (HAAs) in chlorination were explored. The results showed that the degradation of SFA followed pseudo first-order kinetic model, and chlorinating agent dose, pH of water, water temperature, NH4+, HCO3− and humic acid (HA) had various effects on the degradation of SFA and the yields of HAAs. The presence of Br− accelerated both the degradation rate of SFA and more formation of Br-DBPs. Through the identification of intermediate products, we proposed the transformation pathway of SFA during the chlorination disinfection process. Namely, in this NaClO disinfection system, the C–S bond between the sulfonyl group and benzene ring, and S–N bond between sulfonyl and acylamino of SFA were broken, and then the primary formed groups were further oxidized to produce intermediates, such as chloroanilines and chlorophenols. And then chlorophenols were subsequently chlorinated to form toxic HAAs. The present study might be of significance for the evaluation of effective degradation of SFA and potential production of halogenate-DBPs (H-DBPs) during the chlorination disinfection process in aquaculture water.

Epimedium brevicornu maxim. -derived green carbon quantum dots as chemiluminescence probes for highly sensitive detection of Sulfacetamide and Sulfadimethoxine Sodium Salt

Yue Zhao,Yujie Xiao,Xian Yang,Xue Zhang

This study presented the synthesis of phosphorus (P) and chlorine (Cl) co-doped carbon quantum dots (P/Cl-CQDs) derived from Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. and established a simple and effective chemiluminescence (CL) system for detecting Sulfacetamide (STM) and Sulfadimethoxine Sodium Salt (STX). Employing traditional Chinese medicine Epimedium brevicornu Maxim. as a green precursor material, (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 and NH 4 Cl were utilized as dopants for P and Cl, respectively. The P/Cl-CQDs was synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method exhibited excellent CL properties, effectively catalyzing the luminol system and markedly amplifying its CL intensity. Both STM and STX were observed to inhibit the CL intensity of the luminol-(P/Cl-CQDs) system. Based on this, a novel CL method combining flow injection technique was established for the detection of STM and STX. Under optimal conditions, the method demonstrated the capability to detect STM in the range of 1–400 × 10 −6 mol/L, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 × 10 −6 mol/L and a relative standard deviation (RSD) of 1.29 %, and STX within the range of 5–280 × 10 −6 mol/L, with a LOD of 0.16 × 10 −6 mol/L and an RSD of 1.23 %. This method successfully determined the content of STM and STX in pork, with spike recoveries ranging from 100.0 % to 103.8 % for STM and from 98.0 % to 102.3 % for STX.

A water-stable formamidinium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals@molecularly imprinted polymers fluorescent sensor for ultrasensitive detection of sulfadiazine

Zhiqun Xu,Bo Hou,Pingping Fan,Zhonghua Pan,Guobin Huang,Teng Gao

The widespread use of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in veterinary medicine and its subsequent accumulation in environmental waters necessitate the development of sensitive and selective monitoring tools. This study presents a novel hierarchical core-shell fluorescent nanocomposite, FAPbBr 3 PNCs@SiO 2 @MIP, for the ultrasensitive and selective detection of SDZ. The sensor was constructed by encapsulating water-sensitive formamidinium lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals (FAPbBr 3 PNCs) with a protective silica shell, followed by the grafting of a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer. The silica coating markedly improved the aqueous stability of the PNCs, while the MIP layer provided specific recognition cavities for SDZ, enabling detection through a photoinduced electron transfer-mediated fluorescence quenching mechanism. Under optimal conditions, the sensor demonstrated a wide linear response from 0.1 to 200 ng/mL and a remarkably low detection limit of 0.03 ng/mL. It also exhibited excellent selectivity against structurally analogous sulfonamides and common interfering ions (Imprinting factor is 3.9), along with high reproducibility and stability in complex media (94.3–100.9 % for the same batch, 98.9–101.4 % and 99.2–104.2 % for different batches). The practical applicability was validated through the successful detection of SDZ in real water and pork samples (Recovery was 99.2–112.0 %, RSD was 2.3–8.9 %), yielding results in good agreement with those from the standard liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. This work establishes a robust and reliable sensing platform for trace-level SDZ monitoring in environmental and food safety applications.

Novel self-assembled fluorescent tripeptide nanoparticle for sensitive detection of sulfadiazine

Rongfang Yan,Xuelian Hu,Ning Zhang,Weihua Liu,Wenxiu Wang,Yiwei Tang

Fluorescent tripeptide nanoparticles (PNPs) emitting cyan fluorescence were first synthesized using a Trp-Phe-Phe/Zn(II)-based self-assemble method. Molecular docking and dynamics simulations were employed to elucidated the self-assembly process of PNPs, the underlying driving forces, and their influence on the fluorescence properties of PNPs. The resultant PNPs were functionalized with an aptamer specific to sulfadiazine (SDZ), thereby creating a highly sensitive fluorescent probe. This probe demonstrated exceptional sensitivity and selectivity for SDZ detection, leveraging the inner filter effect to induce significant fluorescence quenching. The method demonstrated a wide linear range (0–200 ng/mL) and a low detection limit (0.4 ng/mL). Validation in spiked real samples (tap water, beef, chicken, and fish muscle) yielded recoveries of 83.20–114.08 % with relative standard deviations of <7 %, confirming its accuracy and reliability. This study provides insights into the assembly mechanism of tripeptide nanoparticles and offers a practical tool for food safety monitoring.

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of electrons donated by pollutants in electron transfer-based oxidation system: Electrochemical measurement and theoretical calculations

Mengmeng Dou,Jin Wang,Zhaokun Ma,Chao Han,Wen Zhou,Qingyun Zhang,Shaoya Li

In order to gain a profound understanding of the fate of pollutants in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), this study analyzed the electron contribution of pollutants qualitatively and quantitatively which rarely reported before. The rich electron transfer system was constructed by mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) coupling with persulfate (PS) driven by visible light and the sulfanilamide antibiotics (SULs) were used as target contaminants. Firstly, the qualitative analysis of electron transfer in the system was confirmed systematically. The electron flow direction tested by i-t curves indicated that PS absorbed electrons, while SULs released electrons. The flow rate of electrons was also accelerated after the addition of SULs. The fitting curve between the kinetics and the peak potential difference tested by CV curve showed that the larger potential difference, the slower rate of oxidative degradation . Secondly, the quantification of electron transfer was achieved through theoretical calculations to simulate the interactions of the ‘catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic’ system. After the addition of SULs, the adsorption energy of the ‘catalyst-oxidant-antibiotic’ system was enhanced and the bond length of the peroxide bond was stretched. Notably, the electron transfer analysis results showed that the charge of SULs was around 0.032–0.056 e , indicating that SULs pollutants played the role of electron contributors in the system. The oxidative degradation pathway included the direct cracking of S-N bond, shedding of marginal groups, ring-opening and hydroxyl addition reaction. This study clarified the electronic contribution of SULs in the oxidation system, providing necessary theoretical supplement for the analysis of the transformation of pollutants in AOPs.

Novel Eu-dipeptide assemblies for a fluorescence sensing strategy to ultrasensitive determine trace sulfamethazine

Rongfang Yan,Ning Zhang,Weihua Liu,Xuelian Hu,Wenxiu Wang,Yiwei Tang,Shuo Wang,Xianghong Wang,Qinghai Sheng

Self-assembled Eu-dipeptide (tryptophan-phenylalanine) microparticles with multi-emission fluorescence was prepared and modified with a single-stranded DNA corresponding to the sulfamethazine (SMZ) adapter (Eu-PMPs@cDNA). Aptamer-functionalized magnetic Fe 3 O 4 (MNPs@aptamer) was used to specifically bind the target SMZ. Using Eu-PMPs@cDNA as fluorescent signal probe and MNPs@aptamer as catcher, a noncompetitive fluorescence sensing strategy was developed for determination of SMZ with good sensitivity, accuracy, selectivity, and stability. Under the optimized conditions, fluorescence increases linearly in the 0–20 ng/mL SMZ concentration range, and the detection limit is 0.014 ng/mL. The fluorescence sensing method was applied to analysis of water and fish muscle samples, and recoveries ranged from 81.78 to 119.46 % with relative standard deviations below 4.2 %. This study offered a reliable and sensitive fluorescence sensing strategy for SMZ determination in food samples, which owns great potential for wide-ranging application in harmful compounds assay by simply changing the type of aptamer and its complementary single-stranded DNA.

Abscisic acid confers antibiotic stress tolerance in cucumber by alleviating antibiotic phytotoxicity and decreasing the levels of antibiotic and antibiotic resistance genes

Qiaonan Wang,Mingyao Yu,Han Dong,Jingjing Duan,Yanxia Ding,Jinxiao Wang,Yujie Guo,Yaqian Huang,Tao Zhang,Xiaoxing Dong,Fengzhi Piao,Zhixin Guo

Antibiotic pollution in the environment causes serious threats to crop growth and human health. However, effective strategies for alleviating antibiotic stress based on endogenous signaling response to antibiotics in plants remain unclear. Here, we found that the toxic effects of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TC) at 1   mg   L -1 on cucumber seedlings were stronger than lincomycin hydrochloride, sulfacetamide, thiamphenicol and tylosin. Importantly, both CIP and TC induced abscisic acid (ABA) accumulation and the transcripts of ABA-related genes. In turn, spraying exogenous ABA alleviated antibiotics-induced growth and photosynthesis inhibition and oxidative stress dose-dependently, with the most effective concentration of 20   µM. Moreover, ABA inhibited the activities of V-ATPase and V-PPase associated with antibiotics uptake. Subsequently, ABA effectively decreased the root and shoot accumulation of CIP and TC by 41.3% and 58.0%, 62.8% and 85.4%, respectively, compared with CIP and TC stress. Finally, CIP and TC promoted the accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), while ABA significantly declined the relative abundance of target ARGs (e.g., qnrD , tetG-02 and teR-02 ), mobile genetic elements (MGEs) (e.g., cIntI-1 ( class1 ) and intI1 ), and potential host bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas , Bacillus and Nocardioide s) at the genus level. Network analysis and structural equation models displayed that bacterial communities and MGEs were the vital factors influencing the abundances of ARGs. Overall, these findings demonstrated that ABA confered antibiotic stress tolerance in cucumber by alleviating antibiotic phytotoxicity and decreasing the levels of antibiotics and ARGs, providing a novel and effective method for mitigating the antibiotics contamination in the soil-plant system.

Employment of mixed aptamers and gold nanobipyramids toward a paper-based aptasensor for simultaneously visual screening and accurate detection of eight sulfonamides

Huiting Feng,Yuxin Yang,Ruiling Li,Yuting Yang,Zongwen Wang,FengFu Fu,Yue Lin

A variety of sulfonamides (SAs) are extensively utilized in animal husbandry and aquaculture, necessitating the development of high-throughput methods for the rapid screening and accurate determination of multiple, ideally all commonly-applied SAs, in animal-derived foodstuffs. We herein developed a paper-based colorimetric aptasensor for the detection of eight different SAs employing a mixture of two broad-specific aptamers as bio-receptor, ascorbic acid (AA)-mediated gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) growth for generating color signals, and a paper-based analytical device (PAD) for stabilizing and enhancing color signals. The aptasensor exhibits target SAs concentration-corresponding multiple color changes and has excellent specificity. It can be used to visually screen eight SAs (either individually or collectively) with a visual detection limit (LOD) of 4.0 μM, and quantitatively detect these SAs (either individually or collectively) with a spectrometry LOD of 0.2 μM. Importantly, the signals of the aptasensor can be stably stored for one month for later verification, and the spectrometry LOD is lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL) of total SAs in animal-derived foodstuffs. The aptasensor was successfully applied to detect eight SAs (either individually or collectively) in milk samples with a recovery of 89% - 95% and a relative standard deviation (RSD, n  = 5) < 8%. The results obtained with the aptasensor were consistent with those obtained using commercial ELISA kit. These findings demonstrated that the aptasensor simultaneously meets the requirement of instrument-free screening and quantitative determination of eight SAs in animal-derived foods, making it a promising approach for ensuring the consumption safety of animal-derived foodstuffs.

Effect of cation type in mixed Ca-Na systems on transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in saturated limestone porous media

Sun Kaixuan,Sun Yuanyuan,Gao Bin,Xu Hongxia,Wu Jichun

Retention and transport of sulfonamides (SAs) in subsurface can strongly affect groundwater quality. In this work, a range of laboratory batch sorption and column transport experiments were conducted to determine the effect of cation type in mixed Ca-Na systems on the retention and transport of two typical SAs, sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfacetamide (SCA), in saturated limestone porous media. Column experimental data showed divalent cation Ca 2+ played a more important role than monovalent cation Na + in decreasing the transport of only SDM in co-cation systems in the saturated limestone media. Further, in the single-cation (i.e., including either Ca 2+ or Na + ) system, increasing ionic strength (IS) of either NaCl or CaCl 2 had little effect on SCA transport; however, increasing of IS of CaCl 2 promoted the retention of SDM in the saturated limestone porous media. This is mainly due to the cation bridging effect of Ca 2+ on SDM and limestone. Overall, SDM showed much higher retention in the limestone columns than SCA, which can be attributed to the two SAs’ different physicochemical properties. Moreover, limestone showed stronger ability to retain the two SAs than quartz sand. Findings in this study suggest that cation type and the concentration of certain electrolyte (e.g., CaCl 2 ) as well as medium type play an important role in controlling the environmental fate and transport of antibiotics.

Diffusive gradients in thin films based on MOF-derived porous carbon binding gel for in-situ measurement of antibiotics in waters

Suyu Ren,Jing Tao,Feng Tan,Ying Cui,Xiaona Li,Jingwen Chen,Xin He,Yi Wang

Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) can achieve the time-weighted-average (TWA) concentrations of analytes in the period of deployment. Here we developed an approach based on DGT with a novel binding gel using porous carbon material (PCM) derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) for in-situ measurement of antibiotics in water samples. The diffusion coefficients of 20 antibiotics (nine sulfonamides, ten fluoroquinolones, and trimethoprim) in agarose diffusive gel were 1.41 × 10 −6  cm 2 /s to 4.75 × 10 −6  cm 2 /s at 25 °C. The capacity of PCM binding gel toward the antibiotics was ~100 μg per gel disc. The masses of the antibiotics accumulated by PCM-based DGT increased linearly with time, and they were almost independent of pH (4.2–8.4) and ionic strength (1–500 mM). The performance of the novel DGT was evaluated using freshwater and synthetic seawater spiked with the antibiotics in laboratory. The results showed good agreement with the theoretical predications except sulfacetamide. The detection limits achieved by the DGT with three devices together for deploying up to seven days were 1.0–18.0 ng/L. Field deployment in municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent and seawater showed that the TWA concentrations of antibiotics were 3.8–1342.5 ng/L and 5.6–43.3 ng/L, respectively, which were comparable to those measured by grab sampling. The proposed DGT was an efficient tool for the measurement of antibiotics in environmental waters.

Polypyrrole-modified magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotube-based magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction followed by UHPLC-MS/MS for the analysis of sulfonamides in environmental water samples

Xucan Yuan,Di Wu,Chu Liu,Xianhui Li,Zhili Xiong,Longshan Zhao

A sensitive and accurate analytical method, magnetic solid-phase extraction combined with dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction followed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, was established for the simultaneous quantification of eight sulfonamide antibiotics in environmental water samples. In this study, a magnetic nanocomposite, polypyrrole-modified magnetic multi-walled carbon nanotubes, was prepared, characterized and applied as an efficient adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction. The synthetic material exhibited satisfactory adsorption capacity for sulfonamides. Moreover, the sample pretreatment-combined technology of magnetic solid-phase extraction and dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction exhibited better purification ability than only magnetic solid-phase extraction. Furthermore, the various extraction parameters affecting the extraction efficiency were thoroughly optimized. Under the optimized conditions, high sensitivity was achieved with method detection limits in the range of 1.02–2.97 ng L−1 and method quantitation limits in the range of 3.05–9.89 ng L−1. The recovery of eight sulfonamides in five environmental water samples was in the range of 78.3–95.6% and the relative standard deviations were no more than 8.5%. Finally, the method was successfully applied to the analysis of sulfonamides in real environmental water samples (river water, lake water, influent wastewater, effluent wastewater and farm wastewater). Accordingly, the newly established method is reliable for monitoring sulfonamide residues in complex environmental matrices, which has great significance for evaluating the effects of sulfonamide residues on humans and the ecosystem.
