Preparation of iron-based MIL-101 functionalized polydopamine@Fe3O4 magnetic composites for extracting sulfonylurea herbicides from environmental water and vegetable samples

Yulan Deng,Ruiqi Zhang,Di Li,Peng Sun,Ping Su,Yi Yang

Here, we describe a simple one-pot solvothermal method for synthesizing MIL-101(Fe)@polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 composites from polydopamine-modified Fe 3 O 4 particles. The composite was used as a magnetic adsorbent to rapidly extract sulfonylurea herbicides. The herbicides were then analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The best possible extraction efficiencies were achieved by optimizing the most important extraction parameters, including desorption conditions, extraction time, adsorbent dose, salt concentration, and the pH of the solution. Good linearity was found (correlation coefficients >0.9991) over the herbicide concentration range 1–150 μg/L using the optimal conditions. The limits of detection (the concentrations giving signal/noise ratios of 3) were low, at 0.12–0.34 μg/L, and repeatability was good (the relative standard deviations were <4.8%, n = 6). The method was used successfully to determine four sulfonylurea herbicides in environmental water and vegetable samples, giving satisfactory recoveries of 87.1–108.9%. The extraction efficiency achieved using MIL-101(Fe)@polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 was compared with the extraction efficiencies achieved using other magnetic composites (polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 , Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)-1@polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 , and MIL-100(Fe)@polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 ). The results showed that the magnetic MIL-101(Fe)@polydopamine@Fe 3 O 4 composites have great potential for the extraction of trace sulfonylurea herbicides from various sample types.

A novel method for the determination of trace sulfonylurea herbicides by introducing a hybrid stationary phase to common capillary

Jing-Hua Yang,Xiao-Mao Zhou,Yu-Ping Zhang,Jun Chen,Hai-Weng Ma

In this paper, a novel polymerized fiber doped with metal–organic frameworks (UIO-66(Zr)-NH2) was developed in a capillary by microwave irradiation. The fiber was successfully prepared using 4-vinyl pyridine as the monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker to reinforce its durability. The resultant fiber was applied to extract sulfonylurea herbicides from environmental soil and water samples before analysis with high-performance liquid chromatography. The optimization of different parameters affecting solid-phase microextraction procedure was carried out. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the extraction capability of the hybrid fiber was two times greater than that of the polymer fiber without UIO-66(Zr)-NH2.The proposed hybrid fiber extraction method exhibited low detection limits (0.19–1.79 µg/l), good precision (<12.0%), and wide linear range (10–700 µg/l). Satisfactory recoveries of sulfonylurea herbicides were obtained with spiked soil and water samples in the range of 75.7–94.2 and 82.2–95.3%, respectively.

Computational design and synthesis of molecular imprinted polymers for selective solid phase extraction of sulfonylurea herbicides

Fang Han,Dian-Bing Zhou,Wei Song,Yan-Yun Hu,Ya-Ning Lv,Lei Ding,Ping Zheng,Xue-Ying Jia,Lei Zhang,Xiao-Jun Deng

A high-efficiency approach for the synthesis of molecularly imprinted polymers has been developed and further for the solid-phase extraction of sulfonylurea herbicides in food samples. Molecular simulation approach combined chemometric selected metsulfuron-methyl (MSM) and 2-trifluoromethyl acrylic acid (TFMAA) as the template and the monomer to synthesize the molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Experimental validation confirmed that the MSM-imprinted polymers showed a higher selectivity and affinity to sulfonylurea herbicides. The optimized molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) conditions, including loading, washing, and eluting conditions, were established. The developed MISPE technology combined HPLC-MSMS was successfully used for the determination of sulfonylurea herbicides in foods. Compared with commercial SPE columns, MISPE showed high affinity, excellent selectivity and low matrix effect. The recoveries of sulfonylurea herbicides spiked in four matrices were between 86.4% and 100.2%, with the relative standard deviations (RSD) in the range of 0.9%–10.5%.

A Choline Chloride-Ethylene Glycol Deep Eutectic Solvent Based on Magnetic Polydopamine with Preconcentration and Determination for Sulfonylurea Herbicides in Water Samples

Wang Dan-Dan,Lu Zhi-Heng,Yang Mei-Nan O.,Guo Hao-Ming,Yang Zhong-Hua

In this study, a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing choline chloride and ethylene glycol was synthesized, and the magnetic polydopamine (PDA) was modified with this deep eutectic solvent to form Fe3O4@PDA-DES. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer were used to characterize the proposed adsorbent. Then, this magnetic material was used as an adsorbent in the magnetic solid phase extraction process for the extraction of four sulfonylurea herbicides in water samples. The main parameters relevant to this method were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the linearity was obtained by five points in the concentration range of 1.0-200 µg L-1 and with the correlation coefficients (r) ≥ 0.9927. The enrichment factors were in a range of 495 to 615 and the relative standard deviations were less than 4.3%. The limits of detection varied from 0.0092 to 0.0113 µg L-1. The recoveries of environmental water samples were 61.9 to 100.1%, and the recoveries of drinking water samples were 71.1-101.9%. All results highlighted the excellent potential of magnetic solid phase extraction coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography strategy in selective separation and extraction of sulfonylurea herbicides in water samples.

An alternative analytical strategy based on QuEChERS and dissolvable layered double hydroxide dispersive micro-solid phase extraction for trace determination of sulfonylurea herbicides in wolfberry by LC–MS/MS

Xiaoli Guo,Tingze Ren,Jianchun Ji,Yan Yang,Xin Di

In this work, a combination of QuEChERS and dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) based on dissolvable layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been established for preconcentration and enrichment of sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) in wolfberry samples. The QuEChERS was used for extraction and purification of SUHs, followed by D-μ-SPE for further enrichment of targeted analytes to obtain superior extraction performance. Dissolvable LDH nanosheets were used as absorbents, thus eliminating the elution step needed in traditional D-μ-SPE. The main influence experimental variables including pH of sample solution, amount of LDH, vortex time and volume of acidic solution were optimized in detail. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method shows high precision (RSDs  < 12 .7%), low limits of detection (0.01–0.5 ng/g) and limits of quantitation (0.1–2.0 ng/g), acceptable recovery (80.1%–97.1%), thus making it a good alternative analytical strategy for the determination of SUHs residues at the low nanogram per gram range with desirable sensitivity.

Preparation of a monolithic magnetic stir bar for the determination of sulfonylurea herbicides coupled with HPLC

Jing-Hua Yang,Cheng-Xing Cui,Ling-Bo Qu,Jun Chen,Xiao-Mao Zhou,Yu-Ping Zhang

A hybrid material of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and monoliths was developed and used for stir bar sorption extraction (SBSE) of five sulfonylurea herbicides. It was prepared in a glass tube (4 mm I.D.) by thermal polymerization using modified neodymium supermagnetic (Nd 2 Fe 14 B) powders as the component substrates, the organic polymerization solutions and ethyl cellulose as the adhesion agent. The prepared stir bar was characterized by scanning electron micrography (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was successfully applied for the determination of sulfonylurea herbicides in soil and lake water samples coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The extraction and desorption factors affecting the performance of sulfonylurea herbicides were evaluated in detail. Under the optimum conditions, the extraction efficiency of the hybrid stir bar was obviously higher than the blank stir bar without UIO-66(Zr)-NH 2 . Linear ranges were 10–700 μg/L for thifensulfuron-methyl (TIM), amidosulfuron (AS) and metsulfuron-methyl (MSM) and 10–800 μg/L for sulfosulfuron (SSF) and tribenuron-methyl (TBM), respectively. The obtained detection limits were in the ranges of 0.04–0.84 μg/L with the recoveries of 68.8–98.1% for the real samples. The novel stir bar possessed excellent advantages of both supermagnetic performance and large specific surface areas in the presence of MOFs and monoliths, which was potentially an optimal adsorbent for environmental analysis .

Autophagy contributes to sulfonylurea herbicide tolerance via GCN2-independent regulation of amino acid homeostasis

Lun Zhao,Li Deng,Qing Zhang,Xue Jing,Meng Ma,Bin Yi,Jing Wen,Chaozhi Ma,Jinxing Tu,Tingdong Fu,Jinxiong Shen

Sulfonylurea (SU) herbicides inhibit branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) biosynthesis by targeting acetolactate synthase. Plants have evolved target-site resistance and metabolic tolerance to SU herbicides; the GCN2 (general control non-repressible 2) pathway is also involved in SU tolerance. Here, we report a novel SU tolerance mechanism, autophagy, which we call ‘homeostatic tolerance,’ is involved in amino acid signaling in Arabidopsis. The activation and reversion of autophagy and GCN2 by the SU herbicide tribenuron-methyl (TM) and exogenous BCAA, respectively, confirmed that TM-induced BCAA starvation is responsible for the activation of autophagy and GCN2. Genetic and biochemical analyses revealed a lower proportion of free BCAA and more sensitive phenotypes in atg5, atg7, and gcn2 single mutants than in wild-type seedlings after TM treatment; the lowest proportion of free BCAA and the most sensitive phenotypes were found in atg5 gcn2 and atg7 gcn2 double mutants. Immunoblotting and microscopy revealed that TM-induced activation of autophagy and GCN2 signaling do not depend on the presence of each other, and these 2 pathways may serve as mutually compensatory mechanisms against TM. TM inhibited the TOR (target of rapamycin), and activated autophagy in an estradiol-induced TOR RNAi line, suggesting that TM-induced BCAA starvation activates autophagy, probably via TOR inactivation. Autophagy and GCN2 were also activated, and independently contributed to TM tolerance in plants conferring metabolic tolerance. Together, these data suggest that autophagy is a proteolytic process for amino acid recycling and contributes to GCN2-independent SU tolerance, probably by its ability to replenish fresh BCAA.

Magnetic Polydopamine Modified with Choline-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for the Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction of Sulfonylurea Herbicides in Water Samples

Wang Dan-Dan,Lu Zhi-Heng,Guan Xiao-yu,Yang Mei-Nan Ou,Guo Hao-Ming,Yang Zhong-Hua

A novel magnetic solid-phase extraction technique coupled to ultraperformance liquid chromatography has been developed for separation and preconcentration of four sulfonylurea herbicides (sulfosulfuron, bensulfuron-methyl, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl and halosulfuro-methyl) in aqueous samples. The key point of this method was the application of a novel magnetic nanomaterial that composed of a low eutectic solvent as a shell coated on the magnetic core modified by polydopamine. The extensive active sites outside the low eutectic solvent can effectively adsorb the target herbicide in the extraction process. The obtained magnetic adsorbent was characterized with fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The influence parameters relevant to this method were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, good linearities could be obtained within the range of 1.0–200 μg L−1 for all analytes, with correlation coefficients ≥0.9908. The limit of detections of the method was between 0.0074 and 0.0100 μg L−1 and the relative standard deviations were 1.1–3.6%. The enrichment factor is 66.6. In the final experiment, the proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides residue in environment and drinking-water samples, and the obtained recoveries were between 70.6% and 109.4%.

Determination of Sulfonylurea Herbicides in Grain Samples by Matrix Solid-Phase Dispersion with Mesoporous Structured Molecularly Imprinted Polymer

Liang Ting,Gao Lei,Qin Dongli,Chen Ligang

A method for determination of sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) in grain was developed by using mesoporous structured molecularly imprinted polymers (M-MIPs) as adsorbents of matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction, coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In this method, M-MIPs were synthesized by selecting chlorimuron-ethyl as template molecule, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as mesoporous structure directing agent, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as functional monomer, and tetraethyl orthosilicate as crosslinker. Then, M-MIPs were characterized by diverse instrumental techniques, absorption characteristics of M-MIPs were studied, and the experimental conditions for the MSPD extraction were optimized. MSPD enabled extraction and clean-up steps to be completed simultaneously. The M-MIPs with mesoporous structure improved detection selectivity, increased adsorptive capacity, and accelerated adsorption rate. Under the best conditions, excellent linearity of SUHs was obtained in the range of 0.25–25 μg kg −1 , the determination limits of chlorimuron-ethyl, nicosulfuron, thifensulfuron-methyl and chlorsulfuron were 0.075, 0.069, 0.083, and 0.105 μg kg −1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations were less than 5.5%.

Analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides in grain samples using molecularly imprinted polymers on the surface of magnetic carbon nanotubes by extraction coupled with HPLC

Xiaoxiao You,Ligang Chen

A new strategy for the isolation and enrichment of sulfonylurea herbicides in grain samples was obtained by using magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) using carbon nanotubes as the matrix, nicosulfuron as the template molecule, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as the functional monomer, tetraethyl orthosilicate as the cross-linker and cetyl trimethylammonium bromide as the dispersant. The characteristics of the MMIPs were assessed by transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray diffractometry, elemental analysis, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The binding characteristics of the imprinted materials were researched using isothermal adsorption experiments, kinetics adsorption experiments and selectivity experiments. The recoveries of four sulfonylurea herbicides were more than 80.0% and the detection limits were 0.0107, 0.0151, 0.0147 and 0.0123 μg g−1, respectively. RSDs of intra-day and inter-day precisions in the range of 0.7–2.4% and 5.3–8.4% were obtained, respectively. The results demonstrate that MMIPs are promising for the preconcentration, purification and analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides in grain samples.

Green fabrication of fly ash-based magnetic adsorbent under water medium for the simultaneous capture of phenylurea and sulfonylurea herbicides prior to chromatographic quantification

YueYue Zhang,Jinjuan Wang,Ang Yu,Yuanfei Wu,Xiaojia Huang

Efficient extraction is an essential and challenging step in the simultaneous monitoring of the commonly used phenylureas (PUs) and sulfonylureas (SUs) in complex matrices. For this purpose, a new magnetic adsorbent based on fly ash (MAFA) was prepared through simple one-pot strategy without the application of organic solvent. The pre-treated fly ash, FeCl 3 and FeCl 2 were dissolved in water, and then the mixture reacted to form MAFA by means of simple one-pot hydrothermal technology for 2.5 h. The structure, morphology, spectroscopic, charged and magnetic properties were inspected by various characterized techniques. Combining the magnetic solid phase extraction (MSPE) format, the obtained MAFA presented satisfactory co-extraction performance towards PUs and SUs. The relevant adsorption process and behavior were well fit for Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. After the optimization of extraction parameters, sensitive, reliable and practicable method for the simultaneous monitoring of studied PUs and SUs in aqueous and soil samples was developed by the combination of MAFA/MSPE and HPLC. The established method displayed high sensitivity (limits of detection were 0.0027–0.011 μg/L and 0.041–0.20 μg/kg for water and soil samples, respectively), good spiked recoveries (81.7–113 % and 81.0–114 % for water and soil samples, respectively) and excellent precision (RSDs did not higher than 9.2 %). Furthermore, approach accuracy was confirmed by means of confirmatory experiments.

Highly porous biochar engineered from agricultural waste for efficient removal of sulfonylurea herbicides in aqueous systems

Wei Wang,Haoyu Shi,Haojie Shi,Tatyana V. Fedorova,Olga A. Glazunova,Liangang Mao,Lan Zhang,Lizhen Zhu,Chi Wu,Xingang Liu

Pesticide contamination in aquatic environments, particularly due to sulfonylurea herbicides, has become a growing concern. Herein, a highly porous biochar was synthesized using potassium bicarbonate (KHCO 3 ) as a green activating agent through a one-step pyrolysis and acid washing process. Among the different samples, KBC-6 exhibited the highest specific surface area (3548.8 m 2  g −1 ), the greatest defect density, and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. As a result, KBC-6 demonstrated impressive adsorption capacities of 227.5 mg g −1 for bensulfuron-methyl (BSM) and 195.9 mg g −1 for nicosulfuron (NIC) at 298 K. The adsorption process followed pseudo-first-order kinetics and was well-described by the Freundlich model, with physical mechanisms, including pore filling, hydrogen bonding, and π–π interactions, contributing 49.4 % and 52.7 %, 15.7 % and 13.6 %, and 25.6 % and 23.9 % for BSM and NIC, respectively. KBC-6 achieved high removal efficiency of BSM and NIC across a wide range of conditions, including pH 5–9, 0.1 M anions, 10 M ionic strength, and 0–100 mg L −1 humic acid. After six regeneration cycles, KBC-6 maintained over 72.3 % removal efficiency. Fixed-bed column tests showed treatment volumes of 244.16 BV for BSM and 222.93 BV for NIC, and the treated effluent did not affect soybean root growth or fresh weight, indicating its safety. These results suggest that KHCO 3 -activated biochar provides a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution for removing sulfonylurea herbicides from polluted water.
