Reactions occurring at silicate minerals play a significant role in controlling phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals' bioavailability and mobility. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms for BPA (bisphenol A) and BPS (bisphenol S) onto montmorillonite (MMT) remain poorly understood. To decipher the molecular-level interfacial configuration and dominant reaction mechanism, batch experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed. Our batch adsorption experiments showed that MMT exhibits a higher adsorption capacity for BPS than for BPA. The XRD analysis also suggested that BPA and BPS could enter the interlayer of MMT. FTIR and XPS results revealed that The Ca atoms and the oxygen atoms in the SiO 4 tetrahedra were involved in BPA and BPS adsorption process via non-covalent interactions. The electrostatic potential calculations suggested that the sulfonyl O site and the hydroxyl H site on the BPS molecule are more favorable for interacting with the MMT surface than the hydroxyl O and H sites of the BPA molecule. DFT calculations further confirmed that stronger binding of BPS than BPA onto the (001) surface and the interlayer of MMT. BPA tends to form Ca ion bridges through hydroxyl groups onto MMT. In contrast, BPS prefers to form Ca ion bridges onto MMT through its sulfonyl group and form hydrogen bonds via hydroxyl groups. This study provides new insights into the molecular-scale interactions that control BPA and BPS adsorption onto an important and environmentally-relevant clay mineral, and which affect the fate and behavior of BPA and BPS in soil systems.

The coexistence of metal cations is often accompanied by organic pollution and could affect the environmental fate of organics by mediating the formation of cation bridges. However, the environmental fate and risk of organics in cation co-existing environments are poorly understood due to the lack of accurate identification of cation bridge formation and stability. In this study, the sorption of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on montmorillonite (MT) with the coexistence of three different valence metal cations (Na + , Ca 2+ , and Cr 3+ ) was investigated. Ca 2+ and Cr 3+ can significantly promote the sorption of SMX on MT for about 5∼10 times promotion, respectively, while Na + bridges displayed little effect on the sorption of SMX. The sorption binding energy of SMX with MT-Ca (−44.01 kcal/mol) and MT-Cr (−64.57 kcal/mol) bridges was significantly lower than that with MT-Na (−38.45 kcal/mol) and MT (−39.39 kcal/mol), indicating that the sorption affinity of SMX on Cr and Ca bridges was much stronger. The higher valence of the cations also resulted in a more stable adsorbed SMX with less desorption fluctuation. In addition, the relatively higher initial concentration of SMX and the valence of cations increased the bonding density of the cation bridges, thus promoting the apparent sorption of SMX on MT to a certain extent. This work reveals the formation and function of cation bridges in the sorption of SMX on MT. It lays a theoretical foundation for further understanding the environmental fate and risk of organics.

The widespread utilization of plastic products ineluctably leads to the ubiquity of nanoplastics (NPs), causing potential risks for aquatic environments. Interactions of NPs with mineral surfaces may affect NPs transport, fate and ecotoxicity. This study aims to investigate systematically the deposition and aggregation behaviors of carboxylated polystyrene nanoplastics (COOH-PSNPs) by four types of clay minerals (illite, kaolinite, Na-montmorillonite, and Ca-montmorillonite) under various solution chemistry conditions (pH, temperature, ionic strength and type). Results demonstrate that the deposition process was dominated by electrostatic interactions. Divalent cations (i.e., Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cd 2+ , or Pb 2+ ) were more efficient for screening surface negative charges and compressing the electrical double layer (EDL). Hence, there were significant increases in deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs with clay minerals in suspension containing divalent cations, whereas only slight increases in deposition rates of COOH-PSNPs were observed in monovalent cations (Na + , K + ). Negligible deposition occurred in the presence of anions (F − , Cl − , NO 3− , CO 3 2− , SO 4 2− , or PO 4 3− ). Divalent Ca 2+ could incrementally facilitate the deposition of COOH-PSNPs through Ca 2+ -assisted bridging with increasing CaCl 2 concentrations (0–100 mM). The weakened deposition of COOH-PSNPs with increasing pH (2.0–10.0) was primarily attributed to the reduce in positive charge density at the edges of clay minerals. In suspensions containing 2 mM CaCl 2 , increased Na + ionic strength (0–100 mM) and temperature (15–55 ◦ C) also favored the deposition of COOH-PSNPs. The ability of COOH-PSNPs deposited by four types of clay minerals followed the sequence of kaolinite > Na-montmorillonite > Ca-montmorillonite > illite, which was related to their structural and surface charge properties. This study revealed the deposition behaviors and mechanisms between NPs and clay minerals under environmentally representative conditions, which provided novel insights into the transport and fate of NPs in natural aquatic environments.

Polyether electrolytes have been widely recognized for their favorable compatibility with lithium-metal, yet they are hampered by intrinsically low oxidation thresholds, limiting their potential for realizing high-energy Li-metal batteries. Here, we report a general approach involving the bridge joints between non-lithium metal ions and ethereal oxygen, which significantly enhances the oxidation stability of various polyether electrolyte systems. To demonstrate the feasibility of the ion-bridging strategy, a Zn 2+ ion-bridged polyether electrolyte (Zn-IBPE) with an extending electrochemical stability window of over 5 V is prepared, which enables good cyclability in 4.5 V Li||LiCoO 2 batteries. In this article, active groups were introduced to the surface of aramid fiber by building a Cu2+ bridge between the aramid fiber and polyethyleneimine (PEI) to improve adhesion in composites between the aramid fiber and the matrix such as epoxy resin. The changes in the structure and properties of the aramid fiber were verified with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the single-fiber pull-out test. The FTIR and XPS results show a significant change in the structure and morphology of the aramid fiber after modification. The results of the single-fiber pull-out test show that the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of epoxy composites reinforced with PEI-grafted aramid fiber increases by 48.8% compared with the IFSS of epoxy composites reinforced with untreated fiber. Thus, the proposed method can improve the interfacial bonding of composites by creating a copper ion bridge between the aramid fiber and PEI.

Efficient photo-electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are synthesized using a facile one-step hydrothermal method. With metal-ion bridges, highly dispersed molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanolayers are vertically grown on the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to form RGO-M-MoS 2 photocatalysts for HER, where M = Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ . The results show that the cross-bridging ions can modulate the MoS 2 growth priority and act as efficient charge transfer channels between RGO and MoS 2 , and combine the advantages of the high conductivity of graphene with the photo-electrochemical activity of MoS 2 . The metal-ion bridged MoS 2 -M-RGO heterostructures demonstrate superior catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction in acid medium, evidenced by the remarkable higher catalytic current density at low overpotential compared with that of MoS 2 -RGO without metal-ion bridge. This study provides a novel and facile route for establishing efficient composite photo-electrocatalysts for water splitting to generate hydrogen.

While low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) are commonly used to enhance the dissolution and bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils, a comprehensive mechanistic framework is lacking. In this study, four representative organic acids (formic, acetic, citric, and oxalic acids) were systematically evaluated to their efficacy in promoting PAH desorption from a long-term contaminated soil, with particular emphasis on elucidating the governing mechanisms and environmental implications. The results demonstrated that these organic acids increased the release of PAHs and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 1.17–1.90 fold and 1.12–17.39 fold, respectively, compared to the NaCl control. The ratio of desorbed PAHs per unit of DOC followed the order: acetic acid > formic acid ≫ citric acid ≥ oxalic acid. Citric and oxalic acids solubilized significantly more Fe 3+ and Al 3+ (bridging cations between minerals and soil organic matter, SOM) than formic and acetic acids, thereby releasing larger amounts of dissolved organic matter (DOM) with relatively high molecular weights. However, additional solubilization of Fe 3+ and Al 3+ had negligible effects of on PAH desorption. The dominant mechanisms governing PAH desorption included Ca 2+ dissolution and the disruption of negative charge-assisted hydrogen bonds, (−)CAHB, within SOM (including both intermolecular and intramolecular linkages). From the perspective of maintaining soil fertility and mitigating global climate change, formic/acetic acids outperform citric/oxalic acids in PAH desorption. The key advantage is that they release less biodegradable DOM, which reduces the risk of increased CO 2 emissions and helps preserve SOM.

Biochar-derived dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) may influence the environmental fate and behavior of tetracycline antibiotics in subsurface environments. In this study, BDOC derived from the pyrolysis of wheat straw at three distinct temperatures (300 °C, 450 °C, and 600 °C) was used to investigate its influence on the transport of oxytetracycline (OTC) through saturated quartz sand. The findings demonstrated that BDOC enhanced OTC mobility due to steric hindrance caused by organic matter accumulation, competition for retention sites between OTC and BDOC, and increased electrostatic repulsion between anionic species, including OTC⁻ ions and quartz sand. Notably, the mobility-enhancing effects of BDOC became significantly more pronounced at higher pyrolysis temperatures, likely resulting from increased organic matter deposition on sand surfaces and intensified electrostatic interactions. However, the promoting effect of BDOC on OTC transport was attenuated as pH increased from 5.0 to 9.0, which was attributed to reduced competitive deposition and steric effects caused by BDOC retention. Furthermore, cation-bridging, particularly with Cu²⁺ in the background solution, amplified BDOC’s promotion effects. These results highlight that dissolved organic carbon released from biochar exerts a notable influence on the antibiotics' mobility within the aquifers.

1,2,3,4,6-Penta-O-galloyl- β - d -glucose ( β -PGG) is one of active component of polyphenol tannic acid in the rhizome of radix paeoniae alba , and isolating and purifying β -PGG from crude extract of Paeonia lactiflora Pall is rather challenge work. In this paper, to reduce the embedding of imprinted sites and increase the binding capacity, β -PGG imprinted monoliths were synthesized using a strategy of combination of hydrophilic macromonomer with metal ions as pivot. With a small side chain of oligoethylene glycol, oligo (ethyleneglycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEG) was chosen as the hydrophilic macromonomer. 4-Vinylpyridine (4-VP) and ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate was used as functional monomer and crosslinker, respectively, and Ni 2+ was adopted as metallic pivot. Polymerization parameters, including the ratio of functional monomer/template, ratios of 4-VP to Ni 2+ , and ratios of OEG to 4-VP on affinity of the resulting molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) were systematically investigated. The structure and morphology of the obtained monolithic MIP was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy and multipoint BET measurement. The greatest imprinting factor can be achieved to 68, which gave rise to excellent selectivity of the resulting MIP. When using the MIP as SPE absorbent, the mean recoveries for β -PGG were 74.1% with purity of 98.35%. The results demonstrated that the combination of metal ion pivot with hydrophilic macromonomer is effective approach to the balance of rigidity of imprinting cavities and polymer flexibility and increase the selectivity of the resulting MIP.

Phosphoric acid (PA)-doped high-temperature proton exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) face significant challenges from PA leaching, particularly under low temperatures, which severely compromises their operational durability and flexibility. Herein, we developed innovative polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based PEMs featuring a comb-shaped cationic bridge structure, synthesized via a combined polyphosphoric acid process and heterogeneous free radical polymerization. The resulting membranes exhibited a distinctive porous microstructure characterized by aligned nanosheet arrangements and double dense skin layers, effectively suppressing PA leaching. Strong ion-pair interactions between imidazolium cations and biphosphate enhanced PA retention and promoted PA dissociation, substantially improving proton conductivity. The optimized PA/PBI-AMim-2 membrane achieved exceptional proton conductivity, exceeding 10 mS/cm at −20 °C and reaching 0.34 S/cm at 220 °C, enabling efficient fuel cell operation across a wide temperature range. It demonstrated outstanding single-cell performance, delivering peak power densities of 820 mW/cm 2 at 80 °C and 1605 mW/cm 2 at 160 °C, along with cold start-up capability of 46 mW/cm 2 at −20 °C. Its superior PA retention ensured stable performance with a minimal decay rate of 23.7 μV/h at 40 °C and enabled reliable functionality through 100 frequent start-up/shutdown cycles. This breakthrough bridges the gap between conventional low-temperature and high-temperature PEMFCs, paving the way for robust, flexible and durable systems under real-world operating conditions.

The mobility of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in saturated aquifers is possibly affected by the presence of biosurfactants, which are widespread in the aquatic/soil environments. This study investigated the mobility characteristics of various tetracyclines—specifically tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC)—within quartz sand columns in the presence of rhamnolipid, a common biosurfactant. Exogenous rhamnolipid significantly inhibited the transport of the three TCs over the pH range of 5.0–9.0 (e.g., the mass of retained TC, OTC, and CTC increased from 32.6 %, 26.9 %, and 39.2 % (in the absence rhamnolipid) to 39.4 %, 38.9 %, and 51.7 % (in the presence of rhamnolipid), respectively). This observation could be attributed to the bridging effects of this biosurfactant. Specifically, the hydrophilic head of rhamnolipid molecules is likely associated with the surfaces of sand grains through surface complexation and/or hydrogen bonding interactions. Accordingly, the hydrophobic moieties of the deposited rhamnolipid molecules (i.e., the aliphatic chains) interact with the hydrophobic groups of TCs molecules via hydrophobic interactions. Interestingly, the extent of the inhibitory effect on CTC mobility was greater than that on OTC and TC, which was related to the different hydrophobic characteristics of the three antibiotics. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of rhamnolipid on the transport of TCs diminished as the pH of the background solution increased. This observation was attributed to the weakened bridging effects, resulting from the reduced deposition of the biosurfactant on the sand surfaces. Additionally, the cation-bridging mechanism involved in the retention of TCs in the addition of rhamnolipid when the background electrolyte was Ca 2+ (i.e., Ca 2+ ions served as bridging agents between the deposited rhamnolipid molecules and TCs). The insightful findings enhance our understanding of the critical roles of biosurfactants in influencing the environmental dynamics and ultimate fate of conventional antibiotic pollutants within groundwater systems.

Contamination of aqueous environment caused by various antibiotics has attracted wide attention. It is important to find effective adsorbents for the removal of toxic compounds. Herein, Ni (II) was anchored at the surface of porous boron nitride (BN) by a facile way to enhance the adsorption performance for tetracycline (TC). The interaction between porous BN and Ni (II) was proved to be B-O-Ni bond. It is noteworthy that Ni (II) modified porous BN shows excellent removal percentage up to 99.769% for TC which far exceeds the pristine porous BN (70.853%) and most other reported adsorption materials. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model is 429.582 mg g −1 , confirming that Ni (II) modified porous BN has a remarkable performance for removing TC. In addition, the adsorption of TC onto Ni (II) modified porous BN followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and the equilibrium data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm, revealing that chemisorption and multilayer adsorption was dominated. Finally, the results of DFT calculations further demonstrated that the effective adsorption of TC on Ni (II) modified porous BN could be ascribed to cation bridge interaction, π-π interaction, Van de Waals force and electrostatic interaction.
