Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a major risk factor for blindness in glaucoma patients, highlighting the critical need for continuous IOP monitoring. While traditional transpalpebral tonometers (TTs) circumvent corneal contact by adopting Goldmann applanation principles through impulsive corneal flattening forces, their measurement accuracy is inherently compromised by eyelid-induced cushion effects. In contrast, parallel-plate capacitive sensors employ constant compressive loading upon the eyelid, achieving palpebral compaction to mitigate the cushion effects. More recently, ion-pump-based capacitive sensors have emerged as promising alternatives, particularly due to their enhanced sensitivity. Nevertheless, these sensors exhibit sharp sensitivity deterioration at extended measurement ranges (0–10 kPa). This operational constraint originates from the strong hydrogen bond energies (between confining matrices and ions) and rigid block copolymer matrices’ steric hindrance. To address these limitations, we developed a transpalpebral tonometer featuring low-energy-barrier ion pumps, incorporating (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES)-silanized liquid metal nanoparticles (LM NPs) as confining matrices and an ionic liquid as an ion donor. The low-energy barrier arises from (1) weaker hydrogen bonds between the N–H of APTES and the F of the ionic liquid and (2) reduced crystallinity in the elastomeric matrices induced by LM NPs. Our sensor achieves a sensitivity of 24.88 kPa–1 with maintained linearity over 0–85 kPa. In vivo animal trials over 120 min validated its continuous IOP monitoring capability, reliably detecting elevated IOP states and demonstrating clinical potential for glaucoma management.

As a unique and indispensable element in modern battery and energy industries, the recovery of lithium has attracted wide attention worldwide. In this work, the recovery of low concentration of Li + in geothermal water was carried out by a green and novel FePO 4 /K 2 NiFe(CN) 6 [FPO/KNiFC] electrochemical ion pump technique. Different K 2 MFe(CN) 6 (M = Cu, Co, or Ni) was synthesized and used to construct an electrochemical ion pump with FePO 4 . It was found that K 2 NiFe(CN) 6 has excellent electrochemical properties, and the recovery of Li + is mainly restricted by the insertion capacity and rate of the FePO 4 electrode. This problem was successfully solved by the modification of electrode using multiwalled carbon nanotube . Even though the optimized ion pump system has a low single insertion capacity for low concentrations of Li + , a cycle extraction method was developed and successfully realized high-effective recovery of Li + from geothermal water. Subsequently, a multi-stage extraction device was designed and proposed for the continuous recovery of low concentrations of Li + .

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes are widely used for building solid-state lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries but suffer from poor lithium-ion (Li + ) transportation kinetics. Here, a lithium-sulfonated covalent organic framework (TpPa-SO 3 Li) was synthesized and functionalized as a Li + pump in a PEO-based solid-state electrolyte to fabricate robust Li–S batteries. The designed TpPa-SO 3 , Li with its porous skeleton and abundant lithium sulfonate groups not only provided iontransport channels but also enhanced the fast migration of Li + . The PEO composite electrolyte containing 5 %-TpPa-SO 3 Li exhibited a notable ionic conductivity of 6.28 × 10 −4 S cm −1 and an impressive Li + transference number of 0.78 at 60 °C. As a result, Li–Li symmetric batteries with the optimized PEO/TpPa-SO 3 Li composite electrolyte stably cycled for 300 h, with a minimal overpotential of only 100 mV at 0.5 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the customized solid-state Li–S batteries based on PEO/TpPa-SO 3 Li were stable for 600 cycles at 60 o C with a high Coulombic efficiency of approximately 98 %. This study provides a promising strategy for introducing covalent-organic-framework (COF)-based Li + pumps to build robust solid-state Li–S batteries.

The escalating contamination of seawater with radioactive cesium ions (Cs + ) poses severe environmental and health challenges, requiring remediation strategies that are both efficient and sustainable. However, current approaches often suffer from limited selectivity, low adsorption capacity, and poor adaptability in complex ionic environments. Herein, a multifunctional Li + − intercalated vermiculite−based photothermal aerogel evaporator is designed to synergistically couple interfacial solar evaporation (ISE) with highly selective Cs + capture. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation increases the local chemical potential of hydrated ions, while the negatively charged vermiculite nanochannels electrostatically facilitate Cs + desolvation and intercalation, enabling active ion pumping instead of passive adsorption. Consequently, the Li-V@CNTs aerogel exhibits an excellent evaporation rate of 3.33 kg·m −2 ·h −1 under 1 sun illumination, exceeding typical cellulose or graphene oxide systems (≈2.2–2.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 ). As a Cs + sorbent, it achieves capacities up to 450 mg·g −1 in Cs + -spiked seawater, outperforming zeolite A (≈51 mg·g −1 ) and representative Zn-based metal-organic frameworks (≈221 mg·g −1 ). Integrated into a sunflower-inspired solar-tracking device, the aerogel evaporator delivers clean-water yield and Cs + removal from real seawater. Fabricated from vermiculite and bacterial cellulose via a simple, low-temperature process (estimated material cost ≈US$1.5 m −2 ) and operated solely by solar energy without secondary pollution, this ion-pumping platform offers a scalable platform with strong potential for sustainable radioactive seawater remediation.

Photoreceptor cells of vertebrates feature ultrastructural membranes interspersed with abundant photosensitive ion pumps to boost signal generation and realize high gain in dim light. In light of this, superstructured optoionic heterojunctions (SSOHs) with cation-selective nanochannels are developed for manipulating photo-driven ion pumping. A template-directed bottom-up strategy is adopted to sequentially assemble graphene oxide (GO) and PEDOT:PSS into heterogeneous membranes with sculptured superstructures, which feature programmable variation in membrane topography and contain a donor–acceptor interface capable of maintaining electron–hole separation upon photoillumination. Such elaborate design endows SSOHs with a much higher magnitude of photo-driven ion flux against a concentration gradient in contrast to conventional optoionic membranes with planar configuration. This can be ascribed to the buildup of an enhanced transmembrane potential owing to the effective separation of photogenerated carriers at the heterojunction interface and the increase of energy input from photoillumination due to a synergistic effect of reflection reduction, broad-angle absorption, and wide-waveband absorption. This work unlocks the significance of membrane topographies in photo-driven transmembrane transportation and proposes such a universal prototype that could be extended to other optoionic membranes to develop high-performance artificial ion pumps for energy conversion and sensing.

The creation of an artificial solid-state ion pump that mimics the delicate ion transport behaviors of a biological protein-based ion pump is drawing more and more research attention due to its potential applications in energy conversion, biosensor, and desalination. However, the reported bioinspired double-gated ion pump systems are generally very primary and can only realize nonselective ion pumping functions with no directionality and uncontrollable ion gating functions, which are far from their biological counterparts. To make the bioinspired device “smart” in a real sense, the implementation of high-level selectivity and directionality in the ion pumping process, while achieving great controllability in the ion gating process, is a necessity. Here, we developed a bioinspired heterogeneous ion pump membrane by combining block copolymer membrane sacrificial coating and plasma grafting technique. The system has unidirectional selective ion pumping and controllable ion gating properties. The introduction of asymmetric ionic group distribution is the key reason for its novel transport behaviors. Such a heterogeneous ion pump could not only provide a basic platform that potentially sparks further efforts to simulate the smart ion transport processes in living bodies but also promote the application of artificial nanofluidic devices in energy conversion, water treatment, and biosensing.
