Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) show differences in antimicrobial activity due to different chemical and physical properties. Using copper as a representative example, this study compared the NP effects on anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) bacteria in wastewater treatment. Long-term exposure to 5 mgCu L −1 CuNPs reduced the physiological activity and abundance of anammox bacteria, thereby causing deterioration of reactor performance. However, anammox granules exhibited stronger resistance and resilience to perturbation by 1–160 mgCu L −1 CuONPs, and no adverse effects on performance were observed. Moreover, the level of Cu(II) released from NPs in the influent exhibited good correlations with variations of the community structure and sludge properties. Therefore, the effects of Cu-based NPs on anammox sludge properties are dependent on their forms and levels, and their discrepant effects are partially attributed to their ability to release ionic copper.

In this study, a facile and novel strategy for constructing tunable antimicrobial NF membrane surface was developed by a simple electrostatic assembly of polycation–copper(II) complex on the polyacrylonitrile substrate surface followed by cross-linking. Polycation–copper(II) complex with high stability and charge density, using polyethyleneimine (PEI) as a capping ligand, was formed by exquisitely manipulating the pH and Cu 2+ concentration for strong assembly on the surface. We confirmed that PEI–copper(II) complex assembly was a good way to significantly improve the Cu 2+ loading efficiency in terms of loading time and loading amount with AAS and EDS measurements. We also demonstrated that cross-linking had a significant influence not only on the strong assembly of PEI–Cu(II) complex to the substrate surface but also on the controllable Cu 2+ release, which was confirmed by SEM, EDS and AAS measurements after exposing the NF membrane to bath sonication and real seawater. The NF membrane exhibited significant antimicrobial activity with antibacterial efficiency of more than 95% and prevented effectively the formation of biofilms for up to 6-month test. For real seawater softening, the NF membrane achieved approximately 32.3 L/m 2 h flux and 43.5%, 68.3%, 98.1%, 19.1% and 18.7% rejection of salt, SO 4 2− , Mg 2+ , Na + and Cl − , respectively, with a high softening efficiency (low S value) compared to other commercial NF membranes. We hope that the present method can be developed as a competitive technology for the fabrication of robust and versatile antimicrobial membrane, leading to the high efficiency of seawater softening.

In order to meet the demand of analyzing low concentrations of DNA with high sensitivity, herein, a magnetic separated-type fluorescent biosensor has been constructed for ultrasensitive DNA assay based on chemically driven redox-cycling system. In this study, the substrate o-phenylenediamine dihydrochlorlde (OPD) could be oxidized to produce 2, 3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with strong fluorescence emission at 555 nm. In the chemically driven redox-cycling system, Cu2+ oxidized OPD to yield DAP and Cu+/Cu0. On one hand, the produced Cu0 could further oxidize OPD to form DAP. But on the other, the generated Cu+ could react with newly imported H2O2 to undergo a Fenton-like reaction to form hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and Cu2+ ion. The reproduced Cu2+ ion and generated •OH could in turn oxidize OPD to form more DAP, which touching off a chemically driven chemical redox-cycling amplification reaction. By leveraging of the magnetic separation-mode, the chemically driven redox-cycling strategy allowed quantitative detection of H1N1, exhibiting a linear ranging from 1 pM to 1 nM with a low limit of detection of 300 fM. The magnetic separation-mode could effectively minimize the background signal to obtain greatly improved sensitivity. It’s promising that the chemically driven redox-cycling strategy would provide a novel way in the fields of biosensing and biological samples assay.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection inflicts significant economic and social burdens on many countries worldwide. Given the substantial morbidity and mortality from HIV infection, there is an urgent need for accurate and early detection of the virus. In this study, immunofluorescence and visual techniques are described that detect the HIV-1 p24 antigen, which relied on selective recognition of Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + using cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs). After the sandwich immunoreactions were accomplished, the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) hydrolyzed L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) to form ascorbic acid (AA) that further reduces Ag + and Cu 2+ to Ag NPs and Cu + , respectively. This method was highly sensitive and selective and could detect as low as 1 pg/mL of p24 antigen by naked eyes and had a good linearity in the concentration range 1–100 pg/mL. When using Ag + and Cu 2+ as media, the limit of detection (LOD) of the new method was 0.3 pg/mL and 0.2 pg/mL, respectively. Compared with clinical electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) results and clinical data, this method demonstrated good consistency for the quantification of HIV-1 p24 antigen in 34 clinical serum samples. In addition, this method could accurately distinguish HIV from other viruses and infections such as hepatitis B virus , systemic lupus erythematosus , hepatitis C virus , Epstein-Barr virus , cytomegalovirus , lipemia , and hemolysis . Therefore, our dual-mode analysis method may provide additional solutions to identify clinical HIV infection. Graphical abstract An immunofluorescence and visualization dual-mode strategy for the detection of p24 antigen was constructed based on immune recognition reaction and a phenomenon that cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) can selectively recognize Ag + /Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) and Cu 2+ /Cu + .
