Seed-assisted synthesis of nano-SAPOs usually requires a costly nano-sized seed, and the micron-sized seed used should be ball-milled or treated under reflux to broke them into nano-particles. In this study, nano-sized SAPO-34 was prepared using a micron-meter SAPO-34-M seed that was treated facilely with morpholine (MOR) within a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave to obtain a seed solution. As MOR was also the template for SAPO-34 synthesis, no extra template was added to the precursor gel. The effects of MOR treatment time on seed properties and the subsequent SAPO-34 fabrication were characterized via XRD, SEM, N2 adsorption–desorption, 29Si NMR and NH3-TPD techniques. The effect of the seed amount on the products was also investigated. There existed optimum seed treatment time and seed addition amount for synthesizing uniform nano-sized SAPO-34 with the characteristics of larger mesopore volume, lower Si contents and acid density and weaker acid strength than conventional SAPO-34. Moreover, heterologous seed-assisted syntheses of SAPO-34 were carried out, and it is found that micron-sized heterologous seeds (AFI, RHO, LEV and AFX) treated with MOR can also deliver nano-sized SAPO-34, although AFI and RHO share no common composite building units (CBUs) with CHA, suggesting that seed selection in this synthesis strategy is not confined to a specific topology. The obtained nano-sized SAPO-34 catalysts exhibited about a 2.7-fold prolonged lifetime and nearly 5% increased selectivity for ethylene and propylene compared to their conventional micron-sized counterparts in methanol-to-olefin (MTO) reactions.

Crops are constantly challenged by different environmental conditions. Seed treatment using nanomaterials is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution for environmental stress mitigation in crop plants. Here, 56 seed nanopriming treatments are used to alleviate environmental stresses in maize. Seven selected nanopriming treatments significantly increase the stress resistance index (SRI) by 13.9% and 12.6% under salinity stress and combined heat–drought stress, respectively. Metabolomics data reveal that ZnO nanopriming treatment, with the highest SRI value, mainly regulates the pathways of amino acid metabolism, secondary metabolite synthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and translation. Understanding the mechanism of seed nanopriming is still difficult due to the variety of nanomaterials and the complexity of interactions between nanomaterials and plants. Using the nanopriming data, we present an interpretable structure–activity relationship (ISAR) approach based on interpretable machine learning for predicting and understanding its stress mitigation effects. The post hoc and model-based interpretation approaches of machine learning are integrated to provide complementary advantages and may yield more illuminating or trustworthy results for researchers or policymakers. The concentration, size, and zeta potential of nanoparticles are identified as dominant factors for correlating root dry weight under salinity stress, and their effects and interactions are explained. Additionally, a web-based interactive tool is developed for offering prediction-level interpretation and gathering more details about a specific nanopriming treatment. This work offers a promising framework for accelerating the agricultural applications of nanomaterials and may contribute to nanosafety assessment.

The increasing global demand for food and the adverse environmental impacts of excessive agrochemical use highlights the urgent need for sustainable and scalable seed treatment technologies. This paper reports a novel photothermal seed coating (QC@SCCNTs) with high biocompatibility, exceptional photothermal efficiency, and notable reusability, serving as an effective alternative to conventional chemical treatments. The coating consists of sericin-functionalized carboxylated carbon nanotubes (SCCNTs) electrostatically complexed with quaternary ammonium chitosan (QC), forming a composite film (QS film). Under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, QC@SCCNTs demonstrated antimicrobial efficacies exceeding 97 % against six pathogenic microorganisms, including prominent pathogens such as Aspergillus flavus and Fusarium solani. Applied to red kidney bean and pakchoi seeds, the coating effectively eliminated microbial contamination, increasing the germination rate of red kidney beans from 55.56 % to 91.67 %, and promoting seedling height from 14.48 cm to 41.01 cm. The QS film exhibited exceptionally gas barrier properties and mechanical strength, and completely degraded within just three days of soil burial. The coating retained antimicrobial performance over two reuse cycles after removal and washing. These findings demonstrate the potential of QC@SCCNTs as a biodegradable, reuseable, and scalable materials for safe seed protection and storage in sustainable agriculture.
