Nervonic acid (NA) is a monounsaturated fatty acid vital for brain health and is of emerging importance in various industrial applications, including therapeutics, food, and cosmetics. Given the growing demands of the food and pharmaceutical industries, there's a pressing need for high-purity NA. Previously, NA constituents in plant seed oils were chemically transformed into nervonic acid ethyl ester (NAEE) to facilitate extraction from seed oils. In this study, we present an enzymatic approach to convert NA constituents in Malania oleifera seed oil to NAEE. Combined with the utilization of the semi-preparative chromatography, we achieved a remarkable purity of 97.52% NAEE. Compared to conventional chemical preparations characterized by multiple steps, prolonged processing times, and low yields and purities, our enzymatic method stands out as a more efficient and advantageous alternative. On top of that, this innovative approach is environmentally friendly and circumvents health and safety issues associated with chemical processes.

A series of sulfated TiO 2 supported Mo ( x Mo/1.5ST) catalysts were synthesized successfully and evaluated for the transesterification of Jatropha seed oil (JO) to biodiesel. Extensive characterization exhibits that the well dispersed Mo oxide species, with Mo 6+ and Mo 5+ oxidation states, were formed on the surface of the sulfated TiO 2 . The results indicate the presence of many sulfates species leads to the reduction of Mo 6+ species to Mo 5+ species. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of the x Mo/1.5ST catalysts gradually increases with the increase of Mo-loading, although the sulfates content and the total acid intensity decrease. The transesterification process was fully investigated, and the 10Mo/1.5ST shows the highest yield of biodiesel of up to 97.42%. Additionally, the possible mechanism for the JO transesterification over Mo/1.5ST was described, and the fuel properties of the as-synthesized biodiesel conformed to the current international standards.

Tree peonies (Paeonia ostiiandPaeonia rockii) are popular ornamental plants. Moreover, these plants have become oil crops in recent years. However, there are limited compositional studies focused on fatty acids. Therefore, this work aims to reveal compositional characteristics, regarding fatty acids, sterols, γ-tocopherol and phenolic compounds, of tree peony seed oils from all major cultivation areas in China, and to compare with herbaceous peony seed oil. For that, an integrative analysis was performed by GC-FID, GC-MS and UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS technologies. The main fatty acid was α-linolenic acid (39.0–48.3%), while β-sitosterol (1802.5–2793.7 mg/kg) and fucosterol (682.2–1225.1 mg/kg) were the dominant phytosterols. Importantly, 34 phenolic compounds, including paeonol and “Paeoniaglycosides” (36.62–103.17 μg/g), were characterized in vegetable oils for the first time. Conclusively, this work gives new insights into the phytochemical composition of peony seed oil and reveals the presence of bioactive compounds, including “Paeoniaglycosides”.Keywords:tree peony seed oil;fatty acids;sterols;phenolic compounds;UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS

Seven fatty acids were detected by GC-MS inXanthoceras sorbifoliumBunge seed oil extracted at different temperatures, including Palmitic acid C16:0, Stearic acid C18:0, Oleic acid C18:1, Eicosenoic acid C20:1, Docosenoic acid C22:1, Tetracosenoic acid C24:1, and Linoleic acid C18:2. The highest content of nervonic acid (NA) was found inXanthoceras sorbifoliumBunge seed oil extracted at 70 °C. Three methods were selected to analyze the extraction rate of nervonic acid inXanthoceras sorbifoliumBunge seed oil, including urea complexation, low-temperature solvent crystallization, and a combined treatment using these two methods. The final content of nervonic acid obtained was 14.07%, 19.66%, and 40.17%, respectively. The combined treatment method increased the purity of nervonic acid inXanthoceras sorbifoliumBunge seed oil by 12.62 times. Meanwhile, thermogravimetric behavior analysis of samples extracted using different methods was conducted by thermogravimetric analyzer, which suggested that the thermal stability of the samples extracted by the combined treatment was enhanced. These results can provide a new process parameter and scientific basis for the extraction of NA. At the same time, FTIR and NMR were also used to characterize the combined extraction sample, and the structure of the samples was proved.

In this study, ultrasonic circulating extraction (UCE) technique was firstly and successfully applied for extraction of samara oil from Acer saccharum . The extraction kinetics were fitted and described, and the extraction mechanism was discussed. Through comparison, n -hexane was selected as the extraction solvent, the influence of solvent type on the responses was detailedly interpreted based on the influence of their properties on the occurrence and intensity of cavitation. Seven parameters potentially influencing the extraction yield of samara oil and content of nervonic acid, including ultrasound irradiation time, ultrasound irradiation power, ultrasound temperature, liquid-solid ratio, soaking time, particle size and stirring rate, were screened through Plackett–Burman design to determine the significant variables. Then, three parameters performed statistically significant, including liquid-solid ratio, ultrasound irradiation time and ultrasound irradiation power, were further optimized using Box–Behnken design to predict optimum extraction conditions. Satisfactory yield of samara oil (11.72 ± 0.38%) and content of nervonic acid (5.28 ± 0.18%) were achieved using the optimal conditions. 1% proportion of ethanol in extraction solvent, 120 °C of drying temperature and 6.4% moisture were selected and applied for effective extraction. There were no distinct differences in the physicochemical properties of samara oil obtained by UCE and Soxhlet extraction, and the samara oil obtained by UCE exhibited better antioxidant activities. Therefore, UCE method has enormous potential for efficient extraction of edible oil with high quality from plant materials.

This study explored the physicochemical properties, fatty acid compositions, and thermal characteristics of Malania oleifera seed oil (MOSO). Our data showed that the refractive index and specific gravity of MOSO at ambient temperature were 1.461 and 0.913, respectively. The oil content, acid, peroxide, saponification, iodine value, average molecular weight, and an average number of carbon–carbon double bond per triglyceride were 47.8%, 3.62 mg KOH/g oil, 4.61 meq O 2 /kg oil, 163.16 mg KOH/g oil, 104.28 g I 2 /100 g oil, 1031.51 g/mol, and 4.24, respectively. The fatty acid profiles of the methyl esters showed the presence of 96.09% unsaturated fatty acids and 2.16% saturated fatty acids. Nervonic acid (NA) was the major component (45.04%). These results suggested that MOSO is an excellent source of essential fatty acids and NA and may be used as a potential NA resource of health supplements and medicines. Graphical abstract

This work, an efficient method for simultaneous extraction and separation of different polarity phytochemicals from E. ulmoides seeds was developed with green solvent cyclopentyl methyl ether (CPME) system. Firstly, the green solvent CPME with optimal solubility for E. ulmoides seeds oil (EUO) was fast screened by Hansen solubility parameters (HSPs). Under optimum conditions: liquid–solid ratio of 20:1, ultrasound time of 60 min and ultrasound power of 60 W, 28.6% EUO and 6.4% aucubin (AU) were extracted by cyclopentyl methyl ether-ethyl alcohol (CPME-EtOH) system, which were 1.10- and 1.19-fold higher than that of traditional extraction. Meantime, the fatty acid composition and in vitro biological activity of EUO shown it had 86.99% unsaturated fatty acids and excellent antioxidant activity, non-cytotoxicity and lipid-lowering activity. Moreover, EUO had good physicochemical properties and met the standard of edible oil, which indicated EUO is a good oil source for medicine and food. Besides, the CPME that has been recycled six runs can still extract 25.6% EUO. In short, this study gave some guidance for simultaneous extraction and separation of hydrophobic oil and hydrophilic bioactive compounds from plant resources using green solvent instead of petrochemical solvents in food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and other fields.

Eucommia ulmoides Oliver seed oil ( E.u oil) as a functional oil is rich in many natural active components such as α-linolenic acid (56% to 63%), vitamin E, aucubin, and so on. In this study, water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsions composed of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver seed oil, distilled water, a blend of Sorbitan monooleate 80 (Span 80) and Polysorbate (20) sorbitan monooleate (Tween 80), and propylene glycol were prepared for improving the compatibility of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver seed oil. Pseudoternary phase diagrams were built to illustrate the phase behavior of the microemulsions, based on hydrophilic–lipophilic balance values, cosurfactant type, the proportion of cosurfactant, and the changing environmental stress. Dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical conductivity measurements were performed to characterize the microstructural aspects. The optimum process conditions at which the Eucommia ulmoides Oliver seed oil-loaded microemulsion had good tolerance to pH and salinity were: Propylene glycol served as cosurfactant, water–Propylene glycol, and Span 80-Tween 80 ratios separately kept constant at 1:1 and 6:4. These microemulsions with narrow size distribution, nanoscale particle size (below 60 nm), transparent appearance had a wide range of oil phase content and free-radical scavenging capacity toward DPPH and ABTS radicals with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) values of 49.20 and 33.43 mg/mL, respectively. Practical Application This nanostructure, environmental stability, and antioxidant activity of microemulsions containing Eucommia ulmoides Oliver seed oil is a potential delivery system as an alternative to α -linolenic acid and can be used for the delivery of peptides, proteins, antioxidants, and water-soluble nutrients.

While tropical fruit seeds are considered potential sources of functional or edible vegetable oils, their lipid profiles are poorly documented. Herein, the lipid profiles of nine tropical fruit seed oils were systematically evaluated and compared using lipidomics and chemometrics techniques. Cherimoya exhibited the highest total lipid content, while avocado had the lowest. Canistel, cherimoya, and durian displayed a 9cC18:1 predominance. The remaining six seed oils were dominated by 9c12cC18:2n-6. In total, 1370 lipid molecules were identified, with triacylglycerol being the predominant subclass. Passion fruit, cherimoya, and durian had the highest glycerolipid, sphingolipid, and fatty acyl contents, respectively. Litchi exhibited the highest levels of glycerophospholipid and saccharolipid. Chemometric modeling screened 134 differential lipid molecules as markers for distinguishing between various tropical fruit seed oils. Positive correlations were primarily observed among the differential lipid molecules. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the integrated utilization of tropical fruit seed oils.
