In order to find a novel type of fluorescent phloem-mobile insecticides, a facile one-pot solvothermal strategy via fipronil addition-elimination substitution reaction with the corresponding acyl chloride derivatives has been employed to construct series of phenylpyrazole amide derivatives ( PAs ) fused olefin moieties in high yields. The investigation for insecticidal bioactivities of PAs against 3rd instar larvae of Plutella xylostella exhibited better activities than that of fipronil , which can be elucidated by enhanced phloem mobility and calcium ions' coordination with amide N-C=O, C C double bonds and chloride ions, extended conjugate moieties and decreasing steric hindrance of the stereoscopic structure. The introduction of amide units conferred phloem mobility to PAs , which was evaluated by the hydrophobic parameters determined with reversed-phase HPLC through the chromatographic capacity factor. By introducing conjugate moieties and organic chromophore into phenylpyrazole parent structure to increase their conjugation degree and light absorption abilities, PAs exhibited good photodegradation properties. The relationships between extended conjugate moieties of parent structure, electronegativity of substituted groups and photodegradation properties have been discussed. The olefin units connected to PAs caused electronic absorption and fluorescent wavelengths bathochromic shifted. Under simulated solar irradiation, PAs can be reconverted into fipronil parent fragments by photodegradation, thereby enhancing their insecticidal activity. The fluorescent quantum yields of PAs were almost 4 times that of fipronil, which also laid a foundation for the natural degradation and fluorescence detection of insecticide residues.

Soybean root rot, primarily caused by Fusarium and Phytophthora spp., severely damages root tissues, impairs nutrient uptake, and leads to plant death, particularly in saline-alkaline soils, where high pH, salt stress, and deteriorated soil conditions reduce the stress resistance of soybean plants. Conventional chemical treatments are less effective owing to the poor vertical mobility of fungicides in alkaline soils. Stimuli-responsive controlled-release formulations can improve the bioavailability of active ingredients, reduce application frequency, and minimize environmental impact. Here, we present a sustainable, biodegradable, and environmentally benign delivery system based on zein, a plant-derived protein. Zein was modified with non-toxic succinic anhydride to improve water dispersibility, resulting in a green carrier (SZ) with reduced ecological risk. The UV-sensitive fungicide difenoconazole (Di) was encapsulated into this carrier via nanoprecipitation to construct a stimuli-responsive nano-enabled delivery system (Di@SZ). Di@SZ exhibited alkaline-triggered release, with rapid release in alkaline conditions. Compared to the commercial emulsifiable concentrate (EW), Di@SZ nanoparticles showed a 3.03-fold improvement in UV resistance. They enhanced vertical mobility of Di in soil, enabling targeted root delivery during drip irrigation in saline-alkaline soils. Pot experiments demonstrated that Di@SZ provided stronger and longer-lasting protection against soybean root rot than EW. Moreover, the system exhibited superior biosafety, with 2.77-fold lower toxicity to soil earthworms relative to EW. These findings underscore Di@SZ as a sustainable, materials-based plant protection technology that integrates renewable resources, reduces environmental impact, and enhances efficacy, offering a promising approach for eco-friendly disease management in agriculture.

Microactuators, capable of executing tasks typically repetitive, hazardous, or impossible for humans, hold great promise across fields such as precision medicine, environmental remediation, and swarm intelligence. However, intricate motions of microactuators normally require high complexity in design, making it increasingly challenging to realize at small scales using existing fabrication techniques. Taking inspiration from the hierarchical-anisotropy principle found in nature, we program liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE) microactuators with multimodal actuation tailored to their molecular, shape, and architectural anisotropies at (sub)nanometer, micrometer, and (sub)millimeter scales, respectively. Our strategy enables diverse deformations with individual LCE microstructures, including expanding, contracting, twisting, bending, and unwinding, as well as re-programmable shape transformations of assembled LCE architectures with negative Poisson's ratios, locally adjustable actuation, and changing from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) structures. Furthermore, we design tetrahedral microactuators with well-controlled mobility and precise manipulation of both solids and liquids in various environments. This study provides a paradigm shift in the development of microactuators, unlocking a vast array of complexities achievable through manipulation at each hierarchical level of anisotropy.

Due to daily exposure to nanostructured titanium dioxide (nTiO2) for various purposes, concerns have been raised regarding the potential health impact of this material. Few studies have researched the chronic effect of nTiO2 on commensal gut bacteria, and the exposure scenario is typified by long durations, low doses, and dark conditions. We repeatedly exposed Escherichia coli to 5 mg/L nTiO2 for 200 subcultures (400 days) in the dark. Adaptive morphogenesis (i.e., filamentation, thickening of the cell wall, and biofilm formation) was observed, which diminished the sensitivity of the cells to oxidative stress and multiple antibiotics. The bacterial mobility was enhanced by approximately 66%, which was ascribed to the significant increases in flagellar assembly and fimbria biosynthesis. These adaptive traits were associated with increased pathogenicity, as corroborated by a higher death rate of macrophages in vitro and more severe bacterial infection in mice in vivo. The adaptive evolution was attributed to hydroxyl radical production by 5 mg/L nTiO2 in the dark due to surface oxygen vacancies. Therefore, although nTiO2 is generally considered inert in the absence of light, additional precautions should be taken when it is applied in food and daily products considering its potential toxic effects on the commensal microbial community.
