Furfural is considered to be one of the top 30 potential chemicals derived from lignocellulosic biomass . Compared to conventional diluted acid catalysis, furfural production from lignocellulose was significantly improved by the addition of an immiscible organic solvent into the diluted acid solution. However, high conversion is usually achieved under a high water/solid ratio (>1, v/m), and the furfural product is distributed in both the organic solvent phase and the aqueous phase , leading to difficulty of furfural recovery and increasing the cost of furfural production. The present work investigated corncob conversion in a diluted sulfuric acid-toluene biphasic system with extremely low water/solid ratios (≤1). It was found that a high furfural yield (65.67 mol%) was achieved in a very short time (10 min) under a high solid loading of 200% (in the aqueous phase) under the conditions of 1.5 MPa N 2 , 0.5:1 water/solid ratio (v/w), 10:1 toluene/solid ratio (v/m), and 3.85 wt% H 2 SO 4 (in the aqueous phase). After the reaction, no aqueous phase existed, and furfural was completely accumulated in the toluene phase. Further research showed that the majority of the furfural content (84.73%, GC-MS detection) was in the toluene phase, which is beneficial for its recovery. This work provides an effective and inexpensive method for the production of furfural from lignocellulose.

Hemicellulose can be selectively removed by acid pretreatment. In this study, selective removal of hemicellulose was achieved using dilute sulfuric acid assisted by aluminum sulfate pretreatment. The optimal pretreatment conditions were 160 °C, 1.5 wt% aluminum sulfate, 0.7 wt% dilute sulfuric acid, and 40 min. A component analysis showed that the removal rate of hemicellulose and lignin reached 98.05% and 9.01%, respectively, which indicated that hemicellulose was removed with high selectivity by dilute sulfuric acid assisted by aluminum sulfate pretreatment. Structural characterizations (SEM, FTIR, BET, TGA, and XRD) showed that pretreatment changed the roughness, crystallinity, pore size, and functional groups of corn straw, which was beneficial to improve the efficiency of enzymatic hydrolysis. This study provides a new approach for the high-selectivity separation of hemicellulose, thereby offering novel insights for its subsequent high-value utilization.

This work proposed a two-step pretreatment method of cooking with active oxygen and solid alkali (CAOSA) followed by dilute sulfuric acid treatment (DA), to contribute enzymatic hydrolysis of corn cob . The first step, CAOSA pretreatment , removed 83.16 % of the lignin, while the second step, a milder pretreatment with DA further eliminated hemicellulose . After the two-step pretreatment , the cellulose content of the residue reached 66.74 %, and with a solid loading of 5 %, the glucose yield was remarkably high at 98.35 % with a concentration of 36.47 g/L. The optimal conditions of the process were determined as follows: DA with 1 % H 2 SO 4 at a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:10, a temperature of 110 ℃, and a pretreatment time of 60 min. To confirm the efficacy of the two-step pretreatment, we characterized the samples treated with different methods using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The developed method proposes an effective pretreatment and results in the complete enzymatic hydrolysis of corn cob.

Acid pretreatment is considered as one of the most promising pretreatment strategies. However, the operation temperature of acid pretreatment is commonly higher, and acid pretreatment is difficult to remove lignin. Herein, a novel pretreatment strategy (dilute sulfuric acid coupling K 2 S 2 O 8 (DA-PDS) pretreatment) was proposed to remove lignin at lower temperature. The feasibility of DA-PDS pretreatment was predicted by means of density functional theory (DFT). Then, the optimal operation conditions of DA-PDS pretreatment were studied. Temperature was proved to be the most critical factor affecting the DA-PDS pretreatment. The optimal reaction conditions of DA-PDS pretreatment were 5 % DA and 6 % PDS at 80 °C for 2 h. The operation temperature was 40 °C lower than common acid pretreatment. On this condition, the cellulose content and enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency by DA-PDS pretreatment were about 59 % and 73 %, which were 11 % and 13 % higher than that of DA pretreatment, respectively. In addition, this study revealed the mechanism of DA-PDS pretreatment. DA not only accelerated radical generation rate, but also improved the contact probability between radical and lignin. Radicals generated by PDS destroyed the structure of lignin. This made DA more easily to remove hemicellulose . This work presented a novel and energy-saving strategy for lignocellulose pretreatment.

The aim of this work is to study the citric acid fermentation by a robust strain Aspergillus niger SIIM M288 using corn stover feedstock after dry dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment and biodetoxification. Citric acid at 100.04 g/L with the yield of 94.11% was obtained, which are comparable to the starch or sucrose based citric acid fermentation. No free wastewater was generated in the overall process from the pretreatment to citric acid fermentation. Abundant divalent metal ions as well as high titer of potassium, phosphate, and nitrogen were found in corn stover hydrolysate. Further addition of extra nutrients showed no impact on increasing citric acid formation except minimum nitrogen source was required. Various fermentation parameters were tested and only minimum regulation was required during the fermentation. This study provided a biorefining process for citric acid fermentation from lignocellulose feedstock with the maximum citric acid titer and yield.

Pseudo-lignin is generated from lignocellulose biomass during pretreatment with dilute sulfuric acid and has a significant inhibitory effect on cellulase. However, the mechanism of pseudo-lignin generation remains unclear. The following main points have been addressed to help elucidate the pseudo-lignin generation pathway. Cellulose and xylan were pretreated with sulfuric acid at different concentrations; aliquots were periodically collected; and the changes in the byproducts of the prehydrolysate were quantified. Milled wood lignin (MWL) mixed with cellulose and xylan was pretreated to evaluate the impact of lignin on pseudo-lignin generation. Furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, and MWL were pretreated as model compounds to investigate pseudo-lignin generation. The result indicated that the increasing acid concentration significantly promoted the generation of pseudo-lignin. When the acid concentration was increased from 0 to 1.00 wt %, pseudo-lignin was increased from 1.36 to 4.05 g. In addition, lignin promoted the pseudo-lignin generation through the condensation between lignin and the generated intermediates.
