Superhydrophobic straw felt for oil absorption

Jiyu Liu,Yang Chen,Bingzhen Zhang,Qing Zhang,Danyang Zhao,Jinlong Song

Water pollution caused by oil spills, industrial and household wastewater seriously endangers environments and ecosystems. Commercially available oil absorption felts have been widely used in oil removal; however, their relatively poor absorption capacity and high cost restrict practical applications. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a new oil-removing material with excellent oil absorption capacity and low cost. Here, a new kind of oil absorption felt originated from waste straw fibers is proposed. Waste rice straw fibers are formed into felts with special shapes by molds and further transferred into superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity by a simple chemical treatment process. The superhydrophobic straw felts possess excellent absorption capacity for different oils with >95% oil/water separation efficiency. Weight of absorbed oil of the superhydrophobic straw felts is up to 2.55 times as much as that of commercially available oil absorption felts. More interestingly, the superhydrophobic straw felts are applicable to harsh conditions including strong turbulence, strongly acidic water, and intensive ultraviolet irradiation. Using waste rice straw fibers as raw materials, the superhydrophobic straw felts may have promising application prospect in the treatment of oil spills, industrial and household waste water.

Influence of CMC, HPMC, and CNF on Performance of Corrugated Base Paper

Lihong Gao,Xinpeng Zhao,Qingbo Zhou,Huaying Li,Haibin Yu

Graphical This paper prepares expanded rice straw through a single-screw steam explosion method, and then uses the expanded rice straw to prepare corrugated base paper, and explores the effects of carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, and cellulose nanofibers on the mechanical properties of corrugated base paper. Corrugated base paper under optimal conditions is selected for SEM, DSC, TG, FTIR, and other characterizations. This study aims to comprehensively examine the influence of three distinct additives, namely carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), and cellulose nanofibers (CNF), on the performance enhancement of corrugated base paper. For this purpose, steam-exploded rice straw was treated with varying concentrations (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt%) of CMC, HPMC and CNF. Analysis of the rice straw pre and post expansion, as well as the modified corrugated base paper, was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), tensile performance testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicated that adding CMC, CNF, and HPMC to corrugated base paper significantly improved bonding between paper layers, particularly at 2 %, 6 %, and 8 % concentrations, respectively. This enhancement notably increased tensile strength and elastic modulus of the corrugated base paper. Tensile performance saw increases of 57.76 %, 59.01 %, and 60.25 %, while elastic modulus showed increments of 52.7 %, 9.4 %, and 136.69 %, respectively. These findings provide valuable insights for the preparation of corrugated base paper and highlight the potential of CMC, HPMC, and CNF in enhancing paper mechanical properties.

Converting Waste into Treasure: Efficient Adsorption of Cr(VI) Using Iron-Modified Rice Straw Biochar

Hang Liu,Runlin Yao,Mingling Yu,Zongda Ye,Yingrui Lu,Xiaolong Yu,Jin Tang,Jianteng Sun

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is of significant interest in the environmental field due to its high toxicity. Biochar is commonly used as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater. However, its lower removal efficiency remains a persistent challenge. This study develops an iron-modified rice straw biochar through a simple precipitation and pyrolysis method and applies it for Cr(VI) removal in wastewater, which could convert waste into treasure and improve the adsorption performance of adsorbent. In the adsorption experiments, the results revealed that the adsorption efficiency of Cr(VI) reached 95.54% within 480 min (conditions: adsorbent dosage 2.67 g/L, pH 2.5, temperature 25 ± 2 °C). The Langmuir isotherm model was more suitable to describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC, and the fitted adsorption capacity achieved 10.03 mg/g. The experimental process was better described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption process chemical adsorption was the rate-limiting step. The thermodynamic experiments revealed that the adsorption process of Cr(VI) by Fe-BC was spontaneous and endothermic. Column experiments demonstrated that a lower flow speed was beneficial to adsorption performance. Mechanistic studies highlighted the synergistic roles of electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, and reduction in Cr(VI) removal. These findings provide novel perspectives and innovative approaches for the development and application of adsorbents.

Effect of glycerol as co-solvent on yields of bio-oil from rice straw through hydrothermal liquefaction

Leichang Cao,Cheng Zhang,Shilai Hao,Gang Luo,Shicheng Zhang,Jianmin Chen

This study examined the effect of glycerol used as a co-solvent on yields of bio-oil derived from rice straw through hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The reaction was conducted in a high-pressure batch reactor with different volume ratios of glycerol to water. The quality of the derived bio-oil was analyzed in terms of its elemental composition, heating value, water content, ash content, and acid number. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry were conducted to analyze the chemical composition of the derived bio-oils. The following optimal conditions were obtained: 1:1 vol ratio of glycerol to water with 5   wt% of Na 2 CO 3 at 260   °C for 1   h. Under these conditions, 50.31   wt% of bio-oil and 26.65   wt% of solid residue were produced. Therefore, glycerol can be used as a co-solvent in HTL of rice straw at moderate temperatures to obtain bio-oil with high yield and quality.

Inhibitory effects of phenolic compounds of rice straw formed by saccharification during ethanol fermentation by Pichia stipitis

Xiahui Wang,Yiu Fai Tsang,Yuhao Li,Xiubing Ma,Shouqing Cui,Tian-Ao Zhang,Jiajun Hu,Min-Tian Gao

In this study, it was found that the type of phenolic acids derived from rice straw was the major factor affecting ethanol fermentation by Pichia stipitis . The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of phenolic acids on ethanol fermentation with rice straw. Different cellulases produced different ratios of free phenolic acids to soluble conjugated phenolic acids, resulting in different fermentation efficiencies. Free phenolic acids exhibited much higher inhibitory effect than conjugated phenolic acids. The flow cytometry results indicated that the damage to cell membranes was the primary mechanism of inhibition of ethanol fermentation by phenolic acids. The removal of free phenolic acids from the hydrolysates increased ethanol productivity by 2.0-fold, indicating that the free phenolic acids would be the major inhibitors formed during saccharification. The integrated process for ethanol and phenolic acids may constitute a new strategy for the production of low-cost ethanol.

Recovery and characterization of lignin from alkaline straw pulping black liquor: As feedstock for bio-oil research

Zhengbin Tian,Lei Zong,Rujie Niu,Xiao Wang,Yan Li,Shiyun Ai

Conversion of lignin derived from lignocellulosic biomass to bio-oil has the promising potential to significantly reduce petroleum dependence. For that purpose, it is necessary to search for a low-cost lignin source. In this study, lignin sample was separated from straw pulping black liquor by HCl-precipitation, followed by extraction with a mixture of dioxane and water. The content of lignin in the total black liquor solid reached up to 34.8%, determined by UV spectroscopy, and the yield could account for 74.4% of the total lignin composition. The structure of lignin was investigated by various spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, 1 H-NMR, XRD, and XPS. The structural analysis revealed that recovered lignin preserved basic lignin structure, but had relatively lower amount of β-O-4 linkages. The molecular weights were studied through THF-eluted GPC showing that separated lignin had the low M n , which was favorable for the full degradation process during conversion of lignin to bio-oil. Therefore, a feasible solution for effective utilization of lignin in straw pulping black liquor as feedstock for bio-oil was proposed in the study. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Effect of Phenolic Acids Derived from Rice Straw on Botrytis cinerea and Infection on Tomato

Hou Rongrong,Shi Jie,Ma Xiubing,Wei Huanran,Hu Jiajun,Tsang Yiu Fai,Gao Min-Tian

Abstract Phenolic compounds are widely used in different research fields, such as pesticides, medicines, and food. In this study, phenolic acids (PAs) were extracted from rice straw and were found to exhibit a strong inhibitory effect on Botrytis cinerea . B. cinerea mycelial growth and spore generation decreased by 86.18% and 69.10%, respectively, following 0.2 g/L phenolic acid treatment. Confocal microscopic images demonstrated that phenolic acids changed the morphology of B. cinerea . The addition of phenolic acids to B. cinerea- infected tomato leaves increased PAL (phenylalaninammo-nialyase) and PPO (polyphenol oxidase) activities, and decreased POD (peroxidases) and CAT (catalase) activities in the leaves, indicating that phenolic acids enhanced the tolerance of tomato leaves to B. cinerea by reducing oxidative stress. Chlorophyll fluorescence imaging revealed that phenolic acids could alleviate the destruction of the photosynthetic system of B. cinerea -infected leaves. These results provide new insight into the use of phenolic acids from rice straw, through which a complete green cycle of ecological production can be established. Graphic Abstract

Effects of modification and magnetization of rice straw derived biochar on adsorption of tetracycline from water

Jiawei Dai,Xiangfu Meng,Yuhu Zhang,Yunjie Huang

Rice straw derived biochar shows low-cost superiority as a potential adsorbent in tetracycline (TC) removal, but limited by its poor adsorption capacity and N, P leaking risk. Herein, an alkali-acid combined and magnetization method was proposed for its modification. The sorption kinetic and isotherm data showed modification enhanced the performance for tetracycline removal with adsorption capacity up to 98.33 mg·g −1 . The strong adsorption mechanisms were dominated by hydrogen bonding and pore-filling effect due to the increase of specific surface area and pore volume. Furthermore, the effect of pH was insignificant over a pH range from 3 to 10. The strong competition between ionic and TC was identified, where Ca 2+ and PO 4 3− markedly inhibited the sorption. The enhanced TC adsorption, strong N and P removal, easy magnetic recovery, and good reusability in water samples entrusted it with good potential for wastewater treatment and rice straw resource disposal.

Research on efficient removal of ciprofloxacin through sequential rice straw biochar modification via alkali activation and manganese oxides

Shuai Shao,Ming Zhang,Zhanao Lv,Yingke Sun,Penghui Li,Runjuan Zhou

Biochar is considered an environmentally friendly and cost-effective option for removing antibiotics from aqueous solutions. In this study, biochar derived from rice straw (RBC) was sequentially modified by KMnO 4 and NaOH (Mn/Na-RBC) to achieve ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. To explore the adsorption mechanisms between Mn/Na-RBC and CIP, the characterization analyses, adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics, and kinetics were investigated. The results revealed that Mn/Na-RBC significantly increased the specific surface area (154.12 m 2 ·g –1 ), carbonization, and the number of oxygen-containing functional groups compared with pristine biochar, thereby substantially enhancing the CIP adsorption capacity. Through fitting of the adsorption model, it was found that the highest adsorption capacity was 32.25 mg·g –1 under acidic conditions (pH=3), and the pseudo-second-order and Freundlich model fit the adsorption behavior well. The main mechanisms of the adsorption process were pore filling, electrostatic interaction, H-bonding, π–π conjugation, n–π interaction and surface complexation. Moreover, the Mn/Na-RBC still exhibited a remarkable capacity to selectively adsorb CIP even in the presence of high ionic strengths. Thus, Mn/Na-RBC is a promising adsorbent for removing emerging contaminants from aquatic environments.

Magnetic activated carbon prepared from rice straw-derived hydrochar for triclosan removal

Yuchen Liu,Xiangdong Zhu,Feng Qian,Shicheng Zhang,Jianmin Chen

Recently, considerable attention has been given to the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of waste rice straw for the production of bio-oil and hydrochar. However, hydrochar material could not be directly applied in the environmental field, due to its limited porosity and surface area. In order to improve the porosity and adsorption capacity of rice straw-derived hydrochar, it was activated and magnetized to a magnetic activated carbon. The activation condition for hydrochar was firstly considered, due to the negative effect of the magnetic medium. Results suggested that the as-prepared magnetic activated carbon possessed a large surface area (around 674 m2 g−1), and exhibited both a high adsorption capacity and a fast adsorption rate for triclosan (TCS) removal. In addition, magnetic activated carbon can be easily recovered from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field. Overall, the waste rice straw-derived hydrochar can be transformed to a highly efficient magnetic adsorbent for TCS removal.

Significant boost in xylose yield and enhanced economic value with one-pot process using deep eutectic solvent for the pretreatment and saccharification of rice straw

Zi-Jian Huang,Guo-Jian Feng,Kai-Peng Lin,Fu-Long Pu,Yan-Ming Tan,Wei-Chien Tu,Ya-Li Han,Xue-Dan Hou,Hong-Mei Zhang,Yi Zhang

The conversion of crop wastes into fermentable sugars and other chemicals mediated by deep eutectic solvents (DESs) has attracted significant attention. In this work, lactic acid, the constituents of DES, was proved to be a harmful inhibitor for cellulase during the conversion of rice straw to fermentable sugars. Nevertheless, the study here also demonstrated that depending on conditions, lactic acidic–choline chloride (LC) can be utilized for pretreatment and saccharification in a one-pot (PSOP) process with high sugar release. The PSOP process performed at 120℃ for 3 h, 15% biomass loading, a 0.30 mol/L LC with a 40 FPU enzymes saccharification system, achieved a total sugar yield of 75.7%. This value is significantly higher than the 49.9% yield achieved in traditional solid-liquid separation (SLS) processes due to the excellent xylose yield (75.7%). This high total sugar yield is attributed to the retention of the xylooligosaccharide, which was directly utilized in the PSOP process. In addition, the techno-economic analysis demonstrates the potential feasibility of a LC based PSOP process in industrial application.

Exploration of biodegradation mechanisms of black carbon-bound nonylphenol in black carbon-amended sediment

Guanghuan Cheng,Mingyang Sun,Xinlei Ge,Xinhua Xu,Qi Lin,Liping Lou

The present study aimed to investigate biodegradation mechanisms of black carbon (BC)-bound contaminants in BC-amended sediment when BC was applied to control organic pollution. The single-point Tenax desorption technique was applied to track the species changes of nonylphenol (NP) during biodegradation process in the rice straw carbon (RC)-amended sediment. And the correlation between the biodegradation and desorption of NP was analyzed. Results showed that microorganisms firstly degraded the rapid-desorbing NP (6 h Tenax desorption) in RC-amended sediment. The biodegradation facilitated the desorption of slow-desorbing NP, which was subsequently degraded as well (192 h Tenax desorption). Notably, the final amount of NP degradation was greater than that of NP desorption, indicating that absorbed NP by RC amendment can be degraded by microorganisms. Finally, the residual NP amount in RC-amended sediment was decided by RC content and its physicochemical property . Moreover, the presence of the biofilm was observed by the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) so that microorganisms were able to overcome the mass transfer resistance and directly utilized the absorbed NP. Therefore, single-point Tenax desorption alone may not be an adequate basis for the prediction of the bioaccessibility of contaminants to microorganisms or bioremediation potential in BC-amended sediment.
