Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is an emerging antibacterial therapy. This work selected hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) as the sonosensitizer, and studied the enhanced inhibition effect of Escherichia coli and biofilm by microbubble-mediated cavitation in SDT. Firstly, the influence of microbubble-mediated cavitation effect on different concentrations of HMME (10 µg/ml, 30 µg/ml, 50 µg/ml) was studied. Using 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran (DPBF) as an indicator, the effect of microbubble-mediated cavitation on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was studied by absorption spectroscopy. Secondly, using agar medium, laser confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, the effect of microbubble-mediated cavitation on the activity and morphology of bacteria was studied. Finally, the inhibitory effect of cavitation combined with SDT on biofilm was evaluated by laser confocal microscopy. The research results indicate that: (1) Microbubble-mediated ultrasound cavitation can significantly increase cavitation intensity and production of ROS. (2) Microbubble-mediated acoustic cavitation can alter the morphological structure of bacteria. (3) It can significantly enhance the inhibition of SDT on the activity of Escherichia coli and its biofilm. Compared with the control group, the addition of microbubbles resulted in an increase in the number of dead bacteria by 61.7 %, 71.6 %, and 76.2 %, respectively. The fluorescence intensity of the biofilm decreased by 27.1 %, 80.3 %, and 98.2 %, respectively. On the basis of adding microbubbles to ensure antibacterial and biofilm inhibition effects, this work studied the influence of cavitation effect in SDT on bacterial structure, providing a foundation for further revealing the intrinsic mechanism of SDT.

The extraordinary high pressure and temperature produced during cavitation is crucial for ultrasonic sonochemistry. However, the cavitation effect is usually confined to a small zone nearby the ultrasonic horn, outside of which ultrasound produces much less effects on chemical reaction. In present work, in order to expand the range of effective zone and intensify the cavitation effect, N 2 aeration was introduced to an ultrasonic polymerization process of CuO@PNIPAM in aqueous solution. By increasing the number of bubble nucleus gathered on the CuO surface and lowering the surface tension of the aqueous solution, the cavitation effect is intensified on the CuO surface within the whole reaction vessel, which benefits the covalently bonding between PNIPAM and CuO to a large degree and results in the formation of CuO@PNIPAM hybrid composite with excellent interfacial bonding. It is promising that the hybrid composite can be applied as temperature responsive glucose sensing platform with ON and OFF states due to the wettability change of PNIPAM versus temperature.

The effects of nano-alumina additives on the instability of round water jets were experimentally studied. The flow visualization inside and near the exit of two transparent nozzles was obtained by high-speed shadow imaging. A spectrum analysis method was applied to determine the surface wavelengths by performing fast Fourier transform on the image grayscale standard deviation data. According to the flow structure inside the sharp-edged nozzle, an integrated model for wavelength prediction was constructed based on the boundary layer instability theory. The effects of the nanoparticle additives on the jet instability were mainly caused by viscosity enhancement and cavitation promotion. The effects were divided into three categories according to the cavitation state in the nozzle. Firstly, for the no-cavitation flow, the nanoparticles exerted a frequency-reduction effect owing to the viscosity increase. Secondly, for the partial cavitation state, the nanoparticles had an increasing-frequency effect owing to the internal cavitation enhancement. Thirdly, for supercavitation or high-speed flow, the dominant frequency no longer changed, whereas the nanoparticles increased the jet instability owing to the enhancements in the external cavitation and aerodynamic force.

The adsorption characteristics of dissolved aniline onto powdered activated carbon (PAC) and the subsequent desorption by ultrasound treatment were studied. The results indicated that the adsorption followed the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model. Acidic conditions were not conducive to the adsorption of aniline. The desorption efficiency of saturated PAC radiated by ultrasound reached a maximum of 24.35% with a sonication power of 180 W at a frequency of 40 kHz, and a pH of 3 within 180 min of sonication time. The addition of ethanol produced a synergistic effect with ultrasound, effectively improved the desorption efficiency to 83.88%. Intermediates of aniline that were formed during the ultrasound irradiation were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and this identified azobenzene as the main by-product. Analysis of the specific surface area, pore structure, and FTIR spectra of PAC indicated that more cavitation occurred in ethanol than in water, and high-speed microjets and high-pressure microstreams enlarged the mesopore of PAC. In general, the physical attack of microjets and microstreams played an active role in the desorption of aniline.

Controlling acute respiratory infections involves rapidly eradicating bacteria and viruses, which holds great significance. This study examined the effectiveness of combining power airborne ultrasound (US) with ultraviolet (UV) light to eradicate aerosolized pathogenic bacteria. This study evaluated the sterilization efficacy of a custom-built device that simultaneously delivers 40 W airborne ultrasound at 20–30 kHz and 275 nm ultraviolet light emitted by six 0.6 W LEDs. In the experiment, aerosol-encapsulated Escherichia coli was treated using both power airborne US and UV light. The bactericidal efficiency of this combined approach was evaluated, and the underlying mechanisms were explored. The results indicated substantial alterations in both the internal and external structures of the bacteria following gas-mediated, medium-to-high intensity US treatment. The ultrasonic cavitation effect significantly damaged the bacterial surface structure, while the microstreaming effect disrupted the cytoplasmic matrix. A marked increase in conductivity and β-galactosidase activity indicated bacterial wall disruption. Intracellular components, such as soluble proteins and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, showed a marked decrease, suggesting intracellular substance leakage. Exposure to airborne, medium-to-high intensity US resulted in a significant reduction in ATPase activity, implying interference with bacterial energy metabolism. The combined airborne ultrasound and UV treatment demonstrated superior bactericidal efficiency. It achieved over 95 % bacterial reduction within 120 s. Viable colonies decreased from 930 ± 156.986 CFU in untreated controls to 56.667 ± 15.965 CFU. Significant efficacy emerged within 15 s, reducing colonies to 442.778 ± 66.879 CFU. This performance substantially exceeded standalone UV or ultrasound treatments across all exposure durations. This work offers an efficient and rapid sterilization method with substantial application value for controlling disease transmission

Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) relies heavily on the presence of oxygen to induce cell death. Its effectiveness is thus diminished in the hypoxic regions of tumor tissue. To address this issue, the exploration of ultrasound-based synergistic treatment modalities has become a significant research focus. Here, we report an ultrasonic cavitation effect enhanced sonodynamic and 1208 nm photo-induced cancer treatment strategy based on thermoelectric/piezoelectric oxygen-defect bismuth oxychloride nanosheets (BNs) to realize the high-performance eradication of tumors. Upon ultrasonic irradiation, the local high temperature and high pressure generated by the ultrasonic cavitation effect combined with the thermoelectric and piezoelectric effects of BNs create a built-in electric field. This facilitates the separation of carriers, increasing their mobility and extending their lifetimes, thereby greatly improving the effectiveness of SDT and NIR-Ⅱ phototherapy on hypoxia. The Tween-20 modified BNs (TBNs) demonstrate ∼88.6 % elimination rate against deep-seated tumor cells under hypoxic conditions. In vivo experiments confirm the excellent antitumor efficacy of TBNs, achieving complete tumor elimination within 10 days with no recurrences. Furthermore, due to the high X-ray attenuation of Bi and excellent NIR-Ⅱ absorption, TBNs enable precise cancer diagnosis through photoacoustic (PA) imaging and computed tomography (CT).

Atherosclerosis is a cardiovascular disease that seriously endangers human health. Low shear stress (LSS) is recognized as a vital factor in causing chronic inflammatory and further inducing the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. Targeting imaging and treatment are of substantial significance for the diagnosis and therapy of atherosclerosis. On this ground, a kind of ultrasound (US) imaging-guided therapeutic polymer nanobubbles (NBs) with dual targeting of magnetism and antibody was rationally designed and constructed for the efficiently treating LSS-mediated atherosclerosis. Under the combined targeting effect of an external magnetic field and antibodies, the drug-loaded therapeutic NBs can be effectively accumulated in the inflammatory area caused by LSS. Upon US irradiation, the NBs can be selectively disrupted, leading to the rapid release of the loaded drugs at the targeted site. Notably, the US irradiation generates a cavitation effect that induces repairable micro gaps in nearby cells, thereby enhancing the uptake of released drugs and further improving the therapeutic effect. The prominent US imaging, efficient anti-inflammatory effect and treatment outcome of LSS-mediated atherosclerosis had been verified in vivo on a surgically constructed LSS-atherosclerosis animal model. This work showcased the potential of the designed NBs with multifunctionality for in vivo imaging, dual-targeting, and drug delivery in the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Hollow graphene oxide microcapsules (GOMs) have been widely used in energy, electronics, catalysis, sensing, tissue engineering, and drug loading due to their unique properties. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare GOMs with high quality and in large quantity using a simple method. In this work, we obtained single-component GOMs using the liquid nitrogen cavitation effect, which directed the self-assembly of graphene oxide (GO) debris at the gas–liquid interface. This method avoids the introduction of additional components and removal of templates. The morphology of GOM with wrinkles on its surface was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The abundant polar groups of GO microcapsules enabled them to easily disperse in water. Based on this, GOMs have good potential for loading hydrophobic drugs. Subsequently, we used GOMs as carriers to deliver a hydrophobic drug paclitaxel (PTX), which exhibited a good loading capacity. Moreover, PTX loaded GOMs showed excellent cytotoxicity to A549 and MDA-MB-231 cells. The GOMs also showed a pH-dependent drug release performance. Therefore, GOMs can be regarded as potential carriers for biomedical applications.

Celastrol (CST) has positive pharmacological effects on various cancers, but clinical application is limited because of poor water solubility and systemic toxicity. Ferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) has a large specific surface area and can be functionalized by inorganic modification to form complex magnetic drug delivery systems. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 was surface-modified with citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) (via) the Mitsunobu reaction and then covalently bound to CST. Finally, magnetic microbubbles (MMBs) containing perfluoropropane (C 3 F 8 ) and Fe 3 O 4 -PEG 2K -CST particles were constructed with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) as the shell membrane. In vitro studies showed that ultrasound-mediated MMBs exhibited improved inhibition of VX2 cell proliferation compared to inhibition achieved using MMBs without ultrasound mediation, blank MMBs, or free CST. In ultrasound mode, MMBs have favorable imaging properties. After the application of a high mechanical index, MMBs collapse through the cavitation effect, releasing their internal Fe 3 O 4 -PEG 2K -CST. The CST is then delivered to the tumor microenvironment under acidic conditions. In magnetic resonance imaging T2 mode, a specific hypointense signal was observed in the tumor area compared with that before treatment, whereas no significant change occurred in the signal intensity of the surrounding organs. After treatment, pathological examination of tumor-bearing rabbit tissues showed that iron elements accumulated in several apoptosis cells in the tumor area, with no apparent abnormalities found in other areas. Thus, ultrasound-mediated MMBs could significantly improve the drug uptake of solid tumors and inhibit tumor growth with favorable biological safety. Graphical Abstract

Determination of mass transfer during ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has always been a challenge, not to mention the novel breakthrough of mechanisms for its positive effects. Herein, versatile porous microspheres (PM) with membrane-wall structure like plant tissues, which were made from sodium alginate/polyacrylamide dual crosslinking gels loaded with liposomes, were prepared to reveal the micro mass transfer effects during UAE. Results showed that prepared PM kept stable microstructure during extraction and ultrasound significantly accelerated the pore diffusion rather than surface diffusion. This effect resulted in higher UAE efficiency of PM with 60 % porosity than solid microspheres (143.72 to 155.47 mg/L), and the finding can be further explained as the accelerated internal diffusion (14.25 %) under ultrasound treatment. Moreover, multi-physics coupling simulations were performed to elucidate the enhanced pore flow and UAE efficiency. Acoustic streaming induced by cavitation effect increased the seepage velocity within the PM, and the pore structure would undergo compression and expansion deformation with alternated acoustic pressure due to its elastic characteristic. Both microscale effects improved the mass transfer and increase the UAE efficiency without structural damage from cavitation. This study fills the UAE mechanisms from micro view and provides a novel method for the study of vital micro processes.
