On-site spatial variation study of airborne trace metals has been known to be the key to providing a comprehensive evaluation of air pollution information at any targeted location. However, the existing portable approaches either do not allow sample analysis in the longitudinal direction or is not yet practically applicable due to due to the lack of a portable detection method. In this paper, by integrating paper based colorimetric detection via cellphone and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in-air sampling, we present an approach for on-site multiaxial quantification of airborne trace metals in an arrayed format. Using a self-built sampler mounting on a UAV, our approach enables automatic, multiaxial air PM sampling. In addition, by relying only on a cellphone and a custom-made field reaction kit, samples collected in-air can be readily processed, detected in an arrayed format and interpreted on-site within 30 min. Finally, an ultrafast batch-to-batch paper microfluidic chip fabrication protocol enables 48 chips to be fabricated under 30 s at a cost of 1.92 $, making the approach well-suited for disposable on-site use. Our system was first calibrated for 6 metals commonly found in airborne PM (i.e. Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cr and Ni), and the corresponding metals detection limits were found to be 8.16, 45.84, 1.86 × 10 2 , 10.08, 1.52 × 10 2 and 80.40 ng. The validity of our approach was then demonstrated by characterizing 6 metals commonly found in air PM using a certified ash sample, and the experimentally determined metal weight percentage showed a good agreement with the manufacture certified value. Finally, the approach was used for on-site airborne trace metals spatial variation study at 4 difference locations in Fuzhou City (China), thus demonstrating the significance of our approach in supplementing air pollution information gathering and progressing rapid, on-site air toxicity assessment research.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) is a major risk which increases pulmonary diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). PM is a complex mixture with physiochemical properties that can vary over time and space, presenting a challenge when attempting to analyze their health risks. In this study, we compared two kinds of commercial PM with real PM to explore an index which takes account of both the diverse physicochemical properties of PM and accurate prediction of their toxicities. Our results indicated that the oxidative potential (OP) of PM significantly affects their cytotoxicity. In comparison to two kinds of commercial PM such as carbon black and SRM-1648a, real ambient PM 2.5 induced more significant oxidative stress and ferroptosis, which was closely associated with its higher OP. Notably, the use of radical scavengers like vitamin C and coumarin decreased the OP of PM 2.5 effectively, thereby leading to a decrease in its cytotoxic effects. Furthermore, the reduction of OP reversed redox imbalance and alleviated lung damage in vivo . This study provides additional insights into the structure-activity relationship for PM’s toxicity. It also sheds light on further investigations on the detoxication of PM.

Particulate matter (PM), a key indicator of air pollution by natural and anthropogenic activities, contributes to a wide spectrum of diseases that lead to a shortening of life expectancy. It has been recognized that trace metals in airborne PM are highly toxic and can be correlated with lesion in respiratory, gastrointestinal, immunological, and hematological systems. Traditional methods for trace metal assay require sophisticated instrumentations and highly trained operators in centralized laboratories. In this work, by integrating the technologies of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, additive manufacturing, smartphone, and colorimetric sensing, we developed the first smartphone based paper microfluidic platform for portable, disposable, and quantitative measurements of cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), and iron (Fe) in ambient air and street sediments. On a single A4-sized paper, 48 devices were fabricated in under 30 s with a total cost of ∼$1.9. On each device, 12 reaction units were patterned and used for colorimetric tests. Particulate samples from urban ambient air and street sediments were collected, processed, and analyzed. Signals of the on-chip complexation product were recorded using a smartphone camera and processed by a self-developed app on an iOS system. For precisely controlling the object distance, chip position, and luminance, a hand-held 3D cellphone housing was designed and printed. The detection limits of Co, Cu, and Fe were determined to be 8.2, 45.8, and 186.0 ng, while the linear dynamic ranges were calculated to be 8.2–81.6, 45.8–4.58 × 10 2 , and 1.86 × 10 2 –1.86 × 10 3 ng, representing a practically relevant device performance with a significant reduction in the detection cost and time consumption. Trace metals in ambient air and sediments of two cities in China have been quantified portably, thus demonstrating the utility of our system in improving strategies for air pollution control in low-resource settings.

Rapid on-site analysis of airborne trace metals has been heavily favored over traditional methodologies because air pollutants can be altered by environmental, behavioral, and social patterns at any given time and location. However, existing portable approaches are either not capable of performing integrated on-site analysis or not yet practically applicable. Exploiting graphene oxide (GO) in enhancing the analytical performance of paper-based colorimetric detection, for the first time, this paper reports the development of a practically useful portable system for accurate, sensitive on-site characterization of trace metals in ambient particulate matter (PM). The system consists of GO-nanosheet-coated paper devices, unmanned aerial vehicle multiaxial sampling, and cellphone-based colorimetric detection. The increased specific surface area and the homogeneity of color distribution from the coating of GO improves the accuracy and sensitivity of the assays. Additionally, by leveraging a Wi-Fi camera, a self-developed app and a sample pretreatment cartridge, metal in PM samples can be readily processed and characterized on-site within 30 min. The effects of chip geometric design, pH, reaction volume, and metal interference on detection results have been studied. The detection limits of the system were calibrated to be 16.6, 5.1, and 9.9 ng for metals Fe, Cu, and Ni, respectively, which are comparable to the detection limits of commercial inductively coupled plasma (ICP) instruments, thus making our portable system practically useful. Finally, the system was used for airborne trace-metal study at 6 locations in Fuzhou City (China), and the results obtained using our system demonstrated good agreement with those obtained by the ICP. The significance of our system in supplementing air pollution study and furthering research on rapid, accurate, on-site air toxicity assessment was demonstrated.

The extensive use of synthetic antioxidants, notably N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N′-phenyl- p -phenylenediamine (6-PPD), in rubber-related products, particularly in tire manufacturing, has induced concerns regarding their environmental impact and potential health hazards. Despite the identification of 6-PPD and its derivative, 6-PPD quinone (6-PPDQ), in various water samples and their lethal effects on certain aquatic species ( e.g. , coho salmon, rainbow trout and brook trout), the levels of airborne 6-PPD/6-PPDQ and their respiratory toxicity remain relatively unexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the respiratory toxicity potential of 6-PPD and its derivatives, with a specific focus on detecting these compounds in airborne particulates and assessing their toxic effects on lung cells. Characterization of four airborne fine particulate (FP) samples revealed spherical morphologies with diameters ranging from 17.7 to 225.7 nm, displaying slight agglomeration and negative surface charge. methanol/acetonitrile extraction followed by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis confirmed the presence of both 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ on the surfaces of FPs, with significant variations (0.26–1.05 μg g −1 ) in loading capacity observed among the samples. Subsequent exposure of lung cells (THP-1, BEAS-2B, and A549) to 6-PPD and 6-PPDQ revealed dose-dependent declines in mitochondrial metabolic activity induced by 6-PPD, along with severe membrane damage, ATP depletion, and pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Conversely, 6-PPDQ exhibited negligible toxicity in all tested parameters. These findings underscore the potential health risks associated with airborne 6-PPD exposure and emphasize the importance of further research into the respiratory toxicity of 6-PPD derivatives.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) pollution has raised serious concerns over both the global climate and public health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for air filters of high-efficiency and energy-saving. Pore structure optimization and electret enhancement are feasible means to improve their filtration performance. Herein, a novel sandwich-structured electret composite filter with a low pressure drop and robust filtration stability was successfully designed and fabricated. The composite filter was composed of fluffy PS microfibers with large electric resistivity and high porosity, and PAN nanofibers with high polarity and small pore size. Benefiting from the fluffy structure constructed by electrospinning at the right humidity, the tortuous pore channels created by the appropriate mixing of microfibers and nanofibers, and the abundant static charges generated by the hybrid of polar and nonpolar polymer materials, the PS/PAN/PS composite filter possessed a high filtration efficiency of 99.96% for particles of 0.30 μm, a low pressure drop of 54 Pa and a satisfactory quality factor value of 0.1449 Pa −1 at an airflow velocity of 5.3 cm/s. In particular, the composite filter exhibited better electret stability and PM 2.5 loading performance than the commercial ones, which guarantees its long-term storage and usage.

Heavy metals are widely recognized as toxic components in urban air particulate matter (PM). However, the major toxic metals and their interactions are poorly understood. In this study, we attempted to explore the toxicity contribution and combined effects of PM-bounded metals in human lung epithelial cells (A549). Real-time cell analysis indicated that the critical toxic concentration (EC 50 ) of PM detected in this study was 107.90 mg/L (r 2 = 1.00, p < 0.01). The cell viability of A549 increased significantly (12.3%) after metal removal in PM, demonstrating an important contribution of metal components to PM toxicity. Among eleven elements examined (Zn, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Sr, Cd, and Pb), six heavy metals (Zn, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Pb) might account for PM toxicity in A549 cells, and their co-exposure led to a high mortality of A549 cells (36.5 ± 7.3%). For combination treatments, cell mortality caused by single or multiple metal mixtures was usually alleviated by Fe addition, while it was often aggravated in the presence of Mn. The varying effects of other metals (Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr) on different metal mixtures might be explained by their interactions (e.g., similar or dissimilar membrane transporters and intracellular targets). Furthermore, the concentration addition model (CA), independent action model (IA), integrated addition model (IAM) and integrated addition and interaction model (IAI) were used to predict mixture toxicity, and the IAI model exhibited the least variation between observed and predicted toxic effects (r 2 = 0.87, p < 0.01). Our results highlight the potential contribution from heavy metals and their interactions to PM toxicity, and promote the application of toxicity prediction models on metal components in PM.
