Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have become promising candidates for electrical energy storage systems due to their high theoretical specific energy density, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, there are some technical obstacles of lithium-sulfur batteries to be addressed, such as the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Here, we introduced organically modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a coating layer for the separator to optimize structure and enhance the performance of the Li-S battery. The results showed that the cell with a CNTs-coated separator exhibited an excellent cycling performance. Compared to the blank separator, the initial discharge capacity and the capacity after 100 cycles for the CNTs-coated separator was increased by 115% and 161%, respectively. Besides, according to the rate capability test cycling from 0.1C to 2C, the battery with a CNTs-coated separator still released a capacity amounting to 90.2% of the initial capacity, when the current density returned back to 0.1C. It is believed that the organically modified CNTs coating effectively suppresses the shuttle effect during the cycling. The employment of a CNTs-coated separator provides a promising approach for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.Keywords:Lithium-sulfur batteries;carbon nanotubes;separators;shuttle effect

The lithium–selenium (Li–Se) battery has attracted growing interest recently due to its high energy density and theoretical capacity. However, the shuttle effect and volume change during cycling severely hinder its further application. In this work, we report a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived nitrogen-doped core–shell hierarchical porous carbon (N-CSHPC) with interconnected meso/micropores to effectively confine Se for high-performance Li–Se batteries. The micropores were located at the ZIF-8-derived core and the ZIF-67-derived shell, while mesopores appeared at the core–shell interface after the pyrolysis of the core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor. Such a special hierarchical porous structure effectively confined selenium and polyselenides to prevent their dissolution from the pores and also alleviated the volume change. In particular, in situ nitrogen doping, which afforded N-CSHPC, not only improved the electrical conductivity of Se but also provided strong chemical adsorption on Li2Se, as confirmed by density functional theory calculations. On the basis of dual-physical confinement and strong chemisorption, Se/N-CSHPC-II (molar ratio of Co source to Zn source of 1.0 in the core–shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor) exhibited reversible capacities of up to 555 mA h g−1 after 150 cycles at 0.2 C and 462 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 C and even a discharge capacity of 432 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at 1 C. Our demonstration here suggests that the carefully designed Se/C composite can improve the reversible capacity and cycling stability of Se cathodes for Li–Se batteries.

In lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs), the dissolution of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) triggers the shuttle effect to lose active materials irreversibly, leading to the fast deterioration of electrochemical performance. Rational designs on the separator membrane could mitigate the shuttle effect. However, the development of efficient separators economically remains a challenging task, aggressively limiting the commercial use of LSBs. This work reports the engineering of commercial molybdenum diselenides (MoSe2) flakes to mitigate the shuttle effect of LSBs, by forming rich Se vacancies via a potassium (K) intercalation and de-intercalation reaction. The Se vacancy in MoSex flakes significantly enhances the adsorption capacity of LiPSs and accelerates the Li+ diffusion kinetics, thereby alleviating the shuttle effect and enhancing the energy storage performance. This directly improves the energy storage performance of the LSBs by incorporating the MoSex flakes into the separator membrane, giving a high capacity retention rate of 94.6% at 2 C after 500 cycles, with a reversible specific capacity as high as 452 mAh g−1. This work offers a new strategy for the design and synthesis of vacancy rich transition metal chalcogenides for high-performance LSBs and beyond.

Limited by the shuttle effect, the application of lithium-sulfur batteries is not impressive. As an organ layered two-dimensional (2D) material, MXene has a great electrical conductivity and high specific surface area. Meanwhile, the introduction of metal oxides can restrain the shuttle effect. Hence, this paper prepared CeO 2 /MXene as a cathode material of Li-S batteries. Ce and Ti can chemically adsorb S, and the interlayer structure of MXene can limit S while the interlayer space can alleviate volume expansion. The discharge capacity at 0.5 C is as high as 1051.1 mAh g −1 , and 921.9 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. The average coulombic efficiency is 97.75%. The organized MXene with CeO 2 like notes in accordions are new efficient materials for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Commercial application of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries is still greatly hampered by several issues, especially the shuttle effect of polysulfides. In this work, we proposed a simple but effective method to restrain the shuttle of the soluble polysulfides by adopting a novel binder of Thiokol in the sulfur cathode. Compared to the battery with conventional polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) binder, the initial discharge capacity for the battery with the Thiokol binder were increased by 42%, that is from 578 to 819 mAh/g, while the capacity after 200 cycles were increased by 201%, which is from 166 to 501 mAh/g. Besides, according to the rate capability test cycling from 0.1 to 1 C, the battery with the Thiokol binder still released a capacity amounting to 90.9% of the initial capacity, when the current density returned back to 0.1 C. Based on the UV–vis and ex situ XRD results, it is reasonably proposed that the reactions with polysulfides of the Thiokol help to restrain the shuttle effect of polysulfides. It is therefore suggested that the novel Thiokol binder holds promise for application in high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries. Keywords:lithium–sulfur batteries;binder;Thiokol;shuttle effect

Graphical Let it Se : An Se−C-bonded interface has been constructed in a Se–graphene (GE) composite through facile high-energy ball-milling. Due to the presence of Se−C bonds, a new self-repairing Se-GE cathode material has been obtained (see graphic). It shows high reversible capacity, long cycle life, and high coulombic efficiency. Lithium–selenium batteries, employing selenium as a cathode material, exhibit some notable advantages, such as high discharge rates and good cycling performance, due to their high electrical conductivity, high output voltages, and high volumetric capacity density. However, an important problem, termed the “shuttle effect”, can lead to capacity decay in Li-Se cells (and in Li-S cells), which arises from aggregation and the loss of Se or S from the cathode into the electrolyte. In this work, in order to solve this problem, a new self-repairing system has been devised, in which some Se atoms are chemically bonded to the carbon atoms of graphene and act as reclaiming points for dissociated Se atoms through the establishment of -Se-Se-Se- chains. Se-decorated graphene (Se-GE) was first constructed through a facile high-energy ball-milling process. Its formation was confirmed by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, XPS, and Raman analyses. As we anticipated, in examining cell properties, the as-prepared Se-GE composite underwent an initial capacity decay in the first 20 cycles (from 1050 mAh g −1 to 750 mAh g −1 , ca. 29 % loss), but the capacity then reverted to 970 mAh g −1 (ca. 92 % of the initial value). Other measurements were also consistent with the recapture of dissociated Se atoms.

Lithium sulfide (Li 2 S) compounds as cathode materials for Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery have attracted more and more attention recently because of its high specific capacity, lower volume expansion and higher thermal stability of Li 2 S. However, high electrochemical barrier of the Li 2 S cathode and “shuttle effect” from S species on anode still block the development of Li-S batteries. Herein, LiFePO 4 (LFP) is employed as dual-function separator modifier to establish hybrid cathode. The modified separator will reduce overpotential for effective and durable sulfur redox reactions at the same time, it can also efficiently immobilize the lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) through the Lewis acid-base interaction of LiPSs and LFP. The battery systems based on the as-developed LFP modified separator exhibit an excellent rate capability, high sulfur utilization and outstanding cycling performance. The capacity retention can reach 83.9% after 400 cycles at 0.2 C, and the capacity can reach 594 mAh g −1 at up to 2 C. Current facile and low-cost strategy to modified Li-S battery systems on one hand offers an effective pathway to enhance electrochemical performance, on the other hand inspire new strategies on reducing the activation barrier of Li 2 S for improved sulfur electrochemistry as well.

Li–S batteries (LSBs), owing to their superior energy density, cost-efficiency, and environment-friendliness, are established as one of the most potential next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. However, the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and the poor conductivity of active substances are the main challenges to their practical applications. Herein, we propose a synergistic strategy involving heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts. First, MIL-47 as-derived core–shell carbon nanorods decorated with a V3S4 nanosheet shell (V3S4@C) were smartly constructed and applied as the host material for sulfur cathodes. The resulting V3S4@C not only enhanced the electronic conductivity of the integrated cathode but promoted LPSs chemisorption and conversion as heterogeneous catalysts. The optimized Co(C5H5)2 was further introduced into the electrolyte as a homogeneous catalyst, improving the conversion efficiency of LPSs and electrolyte wettability. Benefiting from the synergistic contributions of the V3S4@C host and the homogeneous catalyst Co(C5H5)2, the assembled LSBs with S/V3S4@C as the cathode exhibited outstanding long-life cycling performance and high-rate behavior, particularly in cases with high sulfur loading and low electrolyte dosage. More significantly, our work promises a feasible pathway for commercial applications of advanced LSBs.

Lithium-sulfur batteries exhibit great potential as one of the most promising energy storage devices due to their high theoretical energy density and specific capacity. However, the shuttle effect of the soluble polysulfide intermediates could lead to a severe self-discharge effect that hinders the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. In this paper, a battery separator has been prepared based on NiFe2O4/Ketjen Black (KB) modification by a simple method to solve the shuttle effect and improve the battery performance. The as-modified separator with the combination of small-size KB and NiFe2O4nanoparticles can effectively use the physical and chemical double-layer adsorption to prevent polysulfide from the shuttle. Moreover, it can give full play to its catalytic effect to improve the conversion efficiency of polysulfide and activate the dead sulfur. The results show that the NiFe2O4/KB-modified separator battery still maintains a discharge capacity of 406.27 mAh/g after 1000 stable cycles at a high current density of 1 C. Furthermore, the coulombic efficiency remains at 99%, and the average capacity attenuation per cycle is only 0.051%. This simple and effective method can significantly improve the application capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries.

The high-energy Li S battery suffers from poor cycling performance due to the shuttle effect of the polysulfides . Strategies must be adopted to suppress the diffusion of polysulfides into the electrolyte in Li S battery . In this work, for the first time, we adopt hydrophilic carbon paper anchored by hierarchically porous cobalt disulfides as the interlayer for capturing polysulfides through physical absorption and chemical bonding. Hierarchical pores can physically adsorb polysulfides, and moreover cobalt disulfide can trap the polysulfides by forming strong chemical interaction. The sulfur-graphene composite with a sulfur content of 70.5% delivers a high initial capacity of 1239.5 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C and retains a reversible capacity of 818 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. In spite of a little capacity contribution by the insertion of lithium ions into cobalt disulfide for the initial cycles, it disappears in the subsequent cycling. Therefore, the as-developed porous transition metal disulfides on carbon paper as the interlayer could significantly enhance the cycling performance of Li S batteries.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have received significant attention due to the high theoretical specific capacity of sulfur (1675 mA h g–1). However, the practical applications are often handicapped by sluggish electrochemical kinetics and the “shuttle effect” of electrochemical intermediate polysulfides. Herein, we propose an in-situ copolymerization strategy for covalently confining a sulfur-containing copolymer onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to overcome the aforementioned challenges. The copolymerization was performed by heating elemental sulfur and isopropenylphenyl-functionalized RGO to afford a sulfur-containing copolymer, that is, RGO-g-poly(S-r-IDBI), which is featured by a high sulfur content and uniform distribution of the poly(S-r-IDBI) on RGO sheets. The covalent confinement of poly(S-r-IDBI) onto RGO sheets not only enhances the Li+ diffusion coefficients by nearly 1 order of magnitude, but also improves the mechanical properties of the cathodes and suppresses the shuttle effect of polysulfides. As a result, the RGO-g-poly(S-r-IDBI) cathode exhibits an enhanced sulfur utilization rate (10% higher than that of an elemental sulfur cathode at 0.1C), an improved rate capacity (688 mA h g–1 for the RGO-g-poly(S-r-IDBI) cathode vs 400 mA h g–1 for an elemental sulfur cathode at 1C), and a high cycling stability (a capacity decay of 0.021% per cycle, less than one-tenth of that measured for an elemental sulfur cathode).

The shuttle effect caused by soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) hinders the practical application of lithium–sulfur batteries. The sluggish reaction kinetics of LiPSs results in rapid capacity decay. In this work, we constructed a free-standing multifunctional interlayer decorated with V 2 O 3 /VN catalysts to suppress the shuttle effect and boost the redox reaction kinetics. The introduction of VN with strong chemical adsorption improves the conductivity of V 2 O 3 , which is beneficial for the kinetics of conversion reaction. In addition, the micro/mesopores inside the structure not only facilitate ion diffusion but also buffer the volume change of the sulfur cathode during the cycling process. Benefiting from the synergistic effects, the fabricated cells exhibit a high specific capacity of 1419.5 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. The cell with V 2 O 3 /VN/C exhibits a promising cycling performance over 1000 cycles with a decay rate of 0.037% per cycle at 1C. The synergistic effects of electrocatalysts and conductive carbon material provide inspiration on the development of high-performance Li–S batteries.
