Preparation of High-Stability Ceramic Slurry with Gel Behavior for Stereolithography 3D Printing

Ning Wang,Hai Chang,Chi Zhang,Yingna Wu,Rui Yang,Xing Zhang,Zirong Zhai

Maintaining sufficient uniformity and stability of a ceramic slurry throughout the printing cycle is key to ensuring the performance of ceramic parts in ceramic-slurry stereolithography. In this study, a stable three-dimensional network structure was introduced into a slurry to achieve slurry uniformity and stability based on rheology theory. The effects of the particle size, solid loading, dispersant content, and gelling agent content on the stability of the three-dimensional network structure in the slurry were analyzed. Relatively stable three-dimensional network structures were constructed to achieve 4-week stability of micron- and submicron-size particle slurries by adjusting the contents of the dispersant and gelling agent. Stabilization ideas for different particle size ranges are provided. In addition, an empirical stability model was obtained based on the experimental results. When the predicted empirical stability factor ofAwas less than 0.035, the slurry exhibited good stability. Keywords:stereolithography printing;slurry stability;rheology;loss factor;gel behavior

Programmable spatial magnetization stereolithographic printing of biomimetic soft machines with thin-walled structures

Meng Xianghe,Li Shishi,Shen Xingjian,Tian Chenyao,Mao Liyang,Xie Hui

Soft machines respond to external magnetic stimuli with targeted shape changes and motions due to anisotropic magnetization, showing great potential in biomimetic applications. However, mimicking biological functionalities, particularly the complex hollow structures of organs and their dynamic behaviors, remains challenging. Here, we develop a printing method based on three-dimensional uniform magnetic field-assisted stereolithography to fabricate thin-walled soft machines with internal cavities and programmable magnetization. This printing technique employs Halbach arrays and an electromagnetic solenoid to generate an adjustable uniform magnetic field (up to 80 millitesla), efficiently orienting ferromagnetic particles, followed by solidification with patterned ultraviolet light. A support strategy and optimized material composition enhance printing stability and success rates. Our developed method enables fabrication of magnetic-driven soft machines capable of peristaltic propulsion, unidirectional fluid transport, periodic pumping action, and intake-expulsion deformation. These structures, achieving hollow ratios as high as 0.92 and enabling parallel manufacturing, highlight this technique’s considerable potential for biomedical applications by emulating complex biological behaviors and functions.

SLA printing of shape memory bio-based composites consisting of soybean oil and cellulose nanocrystals

Beizhi Chu,Xin Cui,Xing Dong,Yu Li,Xueqing Liu,Zhan Guo,Yumin Xia,Shuohan Huang,Jianming Zhang,Yuwei Chen

Improving the sustainability and processability of shape memory composites is key to expanding their applications. This work introduces a novel bio-based shape memory composite resin with renewable cellulose nanocrystals, suitable for stereolithography (SLA) printing. We prepared epoxy soybean oil-based composites by incorporating Itaconic acid monomethyl ester (IAME) modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs-IAME) into IAME modified epoxy soybean oil (IESO). The CNCs-IAME/IESO composite resin, with a viscosity of 1.01–1.22 Pa•s, is ideal for SLA printing. Adding 0.75 wt% CNCs-IAME particles enhances mechanical properties, yielding a tensile strength of 19.54 MPa and elongation at a break of 34.03%. Demonstrated applications include flexible supports and temperature-responsive sensors. This innovative composite offers excellent sustainability and SLA-printability, showing great potential for new bio-based heat-activated shape memory materials.

3D printing of self-healing personalized liver models for surgical training and preoperative planning

Lu Yahui,Chen Xing,Han Fang,Zhao Qian,Xie Tao,Wu Jingjun,Zhang Yuhua

3D printing can produce intuitive, precise, and personalized anatomical models, providing invaluable support for precision medicine, particularly in areas like surgical training and preoperative planning. However, conventional 3D printed models are often significantly more rigid than human organs and cannot undergo repetitive resection, which severely restricts their clinical value. Here we report the stereolithographic 3D printing of personalized liver models based on physically crosslinked self-healing elastomers with liver-like softness. Benefiting from the short printing time, the highly individualized models can be fabricated immediately following enhanced CT examination. Leveraging the high-efficiency self-healing performance, these models support repetitive resection for optimal trace through a trial-and-error approach. At the preliminary explorative clinical trial (NCT06006338), a total of 5 participants are included for preoperative planning. The primary outcomes indicate that the negative surgery margins are achieved and the unforeseen injuries of vital vascular structures are avoided. The 3D printing of liver models can enhance the safety of hepatic surgery, demonstrating promising application value in clinical practice.
