A stable and high-efficiency bamboo-inspired catalytic capillary microreactor (CMR) decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) is skillfully designed for the continuous-flow reduction of nitroaromatics. By a novel continuous-flow method, Ag NPs are mainly dispersed around the long microchannels uniformly and firmly in bamboo vascular bundle. The bioinspired CMR achieves a continuously effective fluid flow while maintaining the high reactivity of Ag catalyst in the reduction of four nitroaromatics and shows good long-term stability where the catalytic performance remained at 90% within 11 h of five cycles. The detection of H • radical adducts indicated that Ag NPs adsorb the BH 4 − ions to form the Ag–H species. The exceptional pore channel of CMR with a large surface area provides active sites readily accessible and facilitates H • radicals and electrons transfer to sinaficantly enhance nitroaromatic reduction. This sustainable bamboo-inspired design can greatly impel the future development of renewable catalysis system for wider applications.

Diabetic wounds have become a major clinical problem that cannot be ignored. Gases, such as hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S), have demonstrated value in inducing angiogenesis and accelerating wound healing, while their effective delivery is still challenging. Here, inspired by the continuous-independent hollow structure of bamboo, we propose novel gasotransmitter microfibres with septal H 2 S bubbles using microfluidic spinning for diabetic wound healing. Benefitting from the exact control of microfluidics, gasotransmitter microfibres with different bubble sizes and morphologies could be generated successfully and continuously. Under the dual effects of drugs in the shell and gas in the core, the wound healing process could be accelerated. Furthermore, the controllable release of drugs could be achieved by adding responsive materials into the microfiber shell, which would promote continuous effects of contents on demand. Based on in vitro and in vivo studies, we have proven that these gasotransmitter microfibres have a positive impact on inducing angiogenesis and promoting cell proliferation during wound healing. Thus, it is believed that the bamboo-inspired gasotransmitter microfibres will have important value in gasotransmitter research and clinical applications. Graphical Abstract The bamboo-inspired microfibres are presented through microfluidics with features of independent chambers for storing and controlled release of hydrogen sulphide (H 2 S) to the diabetic wound. Even if it is partially damaged, it will not affect the overall gas storage and utilization. Thus, it contributes to improvements in basic research and the transformation of gasotransmitters.

Soft actuation materials are highly desirable in flexible electronics, soft robotics, etc. However, traditional bilayered actuators usually suffer from poor mechanical properties as well as deteriorated performance reliability. Here, inspired by the delicate architecture of natural bamboo, we present a hierarchical gradient structured soft actuator via mesoscale assembly of micro–nano-scaled two-dimentional MXenes and one-dimentional cellulose nanofibers with molecular-scaled strong hydrogen bonding. The resultant actuator integrates high tensile strength (237.1 MPa), high Young’s modulus (8.5 GPa), superior toughness (10.9 MJ/m3), and direct and fast hygroscopic actuation within a single body, which is difficult to achieve by traditional bilayered actuators. The proof-of-concept prototype robot is demonstrated to emphasize its high mechanical robustness even after bending 100 000 times, kneading, or being trampled by an adult (7 500 000 times heavier than a crawling robot). This bioinspired mesoscale assembly strategy provides an approach for soft materials to the application of next-generation robust robotics.

Rapid advances in flexible and wearable smart textiles demand low-cost, high-energy/power-density fiber-shaped supercapacitors (FSCs). The performance of FSCs is determined by the fabrication and assembly of fiber-shaped electrodes (FSEs), where an active charge-storage material is always clad around flexible charge transmission current collectors. Inspired by the tissue structure of natural bamboo, wherein parenchyma cells (PCs) that store nutrients are clad around bamboo fibers (BFs), we propose a strategy for converting bamboo cells into FSEs using conductive BFs and activated PCs as current collectors and active materials, respectively. The assembled electrode has a high specific capacitance of 1454 mF cm −2 at 0.64 mA cm −2 . A solid-state FSC with a pair of bamboo-structured electrodes exhibited a substantially high energy density. Its mechanical flexibility enabled the knitting of wearable wristbands to drive ultra-small voltmeter indicators. This lightweight, low cost, and high-energy-density bamboo-structured FSC could enable numerous smart textile applications.
