Effect of tannic/gallic acid-iron dyeing treatment on surface color and light fastness of bamboo veneer

Mengjia Zhu,Shiqin Liu,Huijuan Bai,Yuxiang Huang,Yanglun Yu,Wenji Yu

Currently, the quest for bamboo materials with high color fastness, rich colors and environmental friendliness is rapidly rising due to its potential applications in construction, furniture and decoration. However, finding an easy-to-operate and environmentally friendly dye for bamboo is a necessary task because of the difficulty in treating the dyeing waste liquid of acid dyes and the complexity of the production process of reactive dyes.Five formulations involving metal polyphenol complexes were employed to straightforwardly produce eco-friendly dyed bamboo and the impact of various formulations on the light aging resistance of the dyed veneers was examined. The results indicated that the light resistance of bamboo veneer dyed with the solution containing only FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O and tannic acid reached level 4, surpassing the undyed bamboo veneer by three levels. The mechanism of enhanced lightfastness of dyed bamboo veneer was elucidated by XPS analysis. The polyphenol iron complex serves a dual purpose: it absorbs ultraviolet rays and scavenges free radicals within the system. Additionally, it reduced the oxidation of phenolics in the substrate, transforming them into dark-colored quinone structures. This process enhanced the light-aging resistance of the finishing materials. Therefore, this work provides a simple and environmentally friendly method for changing the color of bamboo and provides a new idea for the selection of dyes for bamboo dyeing in actual production.

Evaluating the Flame Retardancy of Shaving Super Bamboo Layer by Layer Self-Assembly With Phytic Acid-Polyethyleneimine

Lin Peng,Jiang Yingqiu,Ru Xiaolin,Che Wenbo,Zhang Xiaochun,Ma Lingfei,Hou Junfeng,Yu Youming

To improve the flame retardancy of bamboo materials, layer by layer (LbL) self-assembly of phytic acid (PA)-polyethyleneimine (PEI) on the surface of shaving super bamboo specimens with different solution concentrations of PA-PEI and times of LbL self-assembly was completed in this study. Fourier transform infrared analysis results showed that PEI was well assembled to the surface of bamboo specimens by a hydrogen bond with PA as intermediation. The application of PA and PEI significantly promoted the formation of carbon residue, as characterized by simultaneous thermal measurements. Particularly, the peak heat release rate and total heat release rate of bamboo self-assembly with 10 wt% PA and 10 wt% of PEI solution were reduced by 19.36 and 22.3%, respectively. The treated bamboo specimen showed increases of 35.56 and 480.70% in fire performance index and residual mass, respectively, compared to the control sample. Besides, yields of CO and CO2 were decreased by 17.77 and 17.07% in comparison with the control group, respectively. The LbL self-assembly with PA-PEI can effectively improve the flame retardancy of bamboo materials by promoting the formation of a residual char layer.

Citral Encapsulated into a Zeolite Imidazolate Framework-67 (ZIF-67) Cage via Biomimetic Mineralization as an Efficient Preservative for Long-Term Antimildew Efficacy of Bamboo

Na Wang,Xiang Zhou,Youming Dong,Ying Zhang,Rong Liu,Haijiao Kang,Kaili Wang,Jianzhang Li

Natural mildew preventives, like citral, have great potential to protect bamboo from mildew, while their long-lasting antimildew performance is yet to be challenged owing to their oxidability and volatility. Inspired by biomimetic mineralization, in this work, citral@ZIF-67 particles were synthesized by encapsulating citral into a zeolite imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) cage and introduced into a bamboo structure. Benefiting from the unique cage structure and large surface area of ZIF-67, it can encapsulate sufficient citral molecules. The encapsulation reduced the particle size of ZIF-67 due to the nucleation of citral. Furthermore, the surface area, pore size, and volume of citral@ZIF-67 particles gradually decreased with the increase in loading amounts of citral. ZIF-67 exhibited a certain antibacterial ability against E. coli and S. aureus. The encapsulation of citral can further enhance the antibacterial activity of ZIF-67. In addition, the citral@ZIF-67 showed slow-release performance that followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. After the citral@ZIF-67 treatment, bamboo showed no mold spots on the surface with an infection grade of 0, which was retained, even though bamboo was conditioned at 50 °C and 85% relative humidity for 10 days. This proposed method can effectively improve the stability of natural mildew preventives and endow bamboo with long-term antimildew properties with low cost and minimized environmental impacts.

Lignin-retaining porous bamboo-based reversible thermochromic phase change energy storage composite material

Yingqi Heng,Nianrong Feng,Yexin Liang,Dongying Hu

Summary Shaped-stabilized reversible thermochromic phase change materials of (TBC-LB, TBB-LB) were assembled by impregnation the TBC (crystal violet lactone/bisphenol A/tetradecanol) or TBB (3,3′-Bis (1-n-octyl-2-methylindol-3-yl) phthalide/bisphenol A/tetradecanol) into lignin-retained bamboo (LB) for energy storage. Analysis of the chemical structure of lignin-retained wood showed that the removal of part of lignin from the bamboo contributes to the penetration of the compound, and the partial retention of lignin is advantageous for maintaining high mechanical properties. The SEM micrographs of TBC-LB and TBB-LB indicate that TBC and TBB are well immersed into the porous LB. The TBC-LB showed an endothermic peak at 40.8°C with Δ H m of 113.3 J g −1 and two exothermic peaks at 28.8°C and 21.9°C with Δ H L+S of 110.2 J g −1 , and the value is basically equal to the pure TBC compound, indicating that TBC has been fully immersed in LB to form a composite phase change material. For phase change latent heat and melting-cooling temperature, TBB-LB and TBC-LB showed the same trend. About 100 heating-cooling cycles were performed to evaluate the reliability of TBC-LB and TBB-LB, showing excellent cycle stability. It is foreseen that the prepared shape-stable TBC-LB and TBB-LB have great potential for applying insulation systems in reversible thermochromic phase change energy storage.

Fabrication of self-bonding laminated bamboo via a dual-treatment method combining alkali treatment and hot pressing

Xudong Zhu,Yingying Xue,Liang Qian,Changtong Mei,Ying Gao

Urea-formaldehyde and phenolic resins are often used in the preparation of bamboo- or wood-based materials. However, adhesives containing these resins can release harmful substances such as formaldehyde and phenols, posing risks to human health. Meanwhile, delignification is widely used for modifying bamboo- and wood-based materials, but it has some limitations such as high steaming temperatures and long processing time. In this study, a simple and effective self-bonding method for fabricating bamboo-based materials was developed. This method integrated partial delignification and bonding, and its main mechanism involved applying sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution to the bonding surface of bamboo, followed by hot pressing. This process softened lignin under alkaline conditions, promoting interactions between cellulose chains and the softened lignin to form a strong network at the bonding interface. Laminated bamboo fabricated by treating bamboo with a 9 % NaOH solution followed by hot pressing at 140℃ for 60 min under 2 MPa pressure exhibited excellent bonding performance, demonstrating a 6.84 MPa bonding strength. This self-bonding method facilitates the development of adhesive-free bamboo- and wood-based products, reducing dependence on synthetic adhesives.

Fabrication of Hydrophobic ZnO/PMHS Coatings on Bamboo Surfaces: The Synergistic Effect of ZnO and PMHS on Anti-Mildew Properties

Jingbing Chen,Yunyun Ma,Huiping Lin,Qingzhu Zheng,Xinxiang Zhang,Wenbin Yang,Ran Li

Poor mildew resistance has limited the application of bamboo materials. In this work, ZnO/PMHS coatings were fabricated on bamboo timber surfaces by hydrothermal synthesis method and hydrophobic modification with poly(methylhydrogen)siloxane (PMHS). The surface chemical characteristics and microstructure of the bamboo before and after modification were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and water contact angle (WCA). The morphology results indicated that ZnO on the surface of bamboo forms flower-like aggregations. The WCA of ZnO/bamboo increased from 65° to 142° after PMHS hydrophobic modification, indicating that the hydrophobicity of bamboo was significantly improved. The original bamboo had poor anti-mildew properties when exposed toTrichoderma viride,Aspergillus niger, andPenicillium citrinum. After depositing ZnO onto the surface of the bamboo, the anti-mildew properties were significantly improved. Furthermore, it was found that after PMHS hydrophobic modification, ZnO/bamboo had excellent anti-mildew properties when exposed to the three mold hyphae, which indicated that PMHS hydrophobic modification had a synergistic effect on the anti-mildew properties of bamboo with a ZnO coating.Keywords:bamboo;anti-mildew;ZnO;poly(methylhydrogen)siloxane;synergistic effect

Magnetic hydrothermal biochar for efficient enrichment of uranium(VI) by embedding Fe3O4 nanoparticles on bamboo materials from “one-can” strategy

Xinchen Chen,Hongtao Xia,Jianqi Lv,Yuting Liu,Yang Li,Lejin Xu,Chuting Xie,Yun Wang

Reasonable surface modification and increasing structural porosity were two key factors to improve the adsorption performance of biochar in the adsorption field. In this study, three different proportions of bamboo-based magnetic biochar modified with Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 @MBC) were synthesized by “one-can” method. BET showed that this method could effectively increase the specific surface area (129.79 m 2 g −1 ) and VSM indicated Fe 3 O 4 @MBC had an excellent magnetic response (32.84 emu g −1 ), which was conducive to the separation after adsorption. The accurate matching of pseudo-second-order kinetic model, thermodynamic model and Langmuir isotherm showed that at 298 K, pH = 4.5, the adsorption process dominated by chemical complexation and monolayer adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic and disordered. Saturated adsorption capacity of Fe 3 O 4 @MBC with the more Fe 3 O 4 loading proportion could reach 70.45 mg g −1 within 12 h. The loading of Fe 3 O 4 by “one-can” method not only provided abundant Fe-O groups to assist adsorption, but also magnetized bamboo matrix. Results showed that adsorption mechanism of U(VI) by Fe 3 O 4 @MBC included electrostatic action and chemical complexation involving Fe-O, carbonyl group and ample oxygen-containing functional groups. Therefore, Fe 3 O 4 @MBC with easy separation, excellent regeneration, remarkable economic potential and green value provided a novel solution for the field of radioactive wastewater treatment.

Structure and physical properties of high-density bamboo scrimber made from refined bamboo bundles

Liu Caimei,Xizhi Wu,Li Xianjun,Liu Xiubo

Bamboo is comprised of parenchyma and vascular bundles, which contain vessels, sieve tubes, and fiber cells exhibiting numerous cavities or loose structures. Bamboo bundles undergo a series of mechanical rolling and disintegration processes to transform them into longitudinally continuous and transversely separated bamboo bundles and there is still a significant amount of vascular bundles and parenchyma that remain undissociated. Partial vessels, sieve tubes, and a majority of the parenchyma cell cavities are still discernible in the bamboo scrimber through the process of hot pressing, which significantly diminishes properties of bamboo scrimber, such as the strength, rigidity, and the water resistance. Therefore, this paper presented a new type of bamboo scrimber made from refined bamboo bundles, which is called high-density bamboo scrimber. That is, based on conventional bamboo bundles, a small amount of NaOH was employed to selectively eliminate a portion of the hemicellulose and soften bamboo bundles. Subsequently, a mechanical hammering technique was employed to disintegrate the bamboo bundles into single vascular bundles and surrounding parenchyma. This process increased the resin infiltration pathways and a multi-scale bonding interface structure was formed, and the densification and physical properties of the bamboo scrimber were improved. In high-density bamboo scrimber, the fiber cells maintained their original structural morphology, while the vessel cells and parenchyma cells were completely compacted, resulting in indistinguishable cell contours, and there was no discernible demarcation between the vascular bundles and parenchyma. Compared to ordinary bamboo scrimber, the bending strength, bending modulus, and maximum displacement of high-density bamboo scrimber exhibited a significant increase of 40.1%, 37.3%, and 18.2% respectively. The water resistance, surface roughness after sanding, and mildew resistance of this particular bamboo scrimber were better than those of ordinary bamboo scrimber. High-density bamboo scrimber exhibited a broader spectrum of applications within architectural structures.

Surface modification of bamboo with L-DOPA and PEI to promote stable nano-silver coating for antimicrobial applications

Xue Wang,Tingjun Wang,Chengsheng Gui,Hanxiang Guo,Haili Chen

s Bamboo is a sustainable and renewable material. However, its high hydrophilicity and nutrient-rich composition make it highly susceptible to microbial colonization. In this study, a simple two-step strategy was employed to fabricate stable nano-silver particles (AgNPs) containing polymer composites on bamboo surfaces to enhance antibacterial and anti-mold properties. L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) was modified onto the bamboo surface via self-polymerization, providing catechol groups capable of chelating and reducing Ag⁺ ions in situ to form AgNPs. The incorporation of polyethyleneimine (PEI) into the L-DOPA could further promote AgNPs formation and enhance stability of the composite coating. The resulting BT/L-D/PEI/Ag sample was systematically characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, EDS, and water contact angle measurements. The results confirmed that L-D/PEI/Ag polymer composites were successfully coated onto the bamboo surface, and the BT/L-D/PEI/Ag exhibited a significantly enhanced silver loading (6.68 wt%) compared to the BT/L-D/Ag (2.97 wt%), corresponding to a 125 % increase. The modified surface showed improved hydrophobicity with a contact angle of 94.7°, effectively inhibiting microbial adhesion. Antibacterial tests revealed that the BT/L-D/PEI/Ag achieved complete (100 %) inhibition against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), as well as superior antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger ( A. niger ). The synergistic interaction between L-D, PEI and Ag formed an efficient antimicrobial coating, providing a promising strategy for the development of high-value, antimicrobial bamboo materials for sustainable construction and consumer products.

Bilayer bamboo for photothermal trap and large-scale anti-icing

Zhihao Yue,Yuanyuan Wang,Zhuyue Lan,Ke Hu,Shitao Shi,Jiayi Zhang,Qingyu Meng,Yujing Nie,Qingfeng Sun,Xiaoping Shen

Ice buildup is a safety hazard for infrastructure, transportation and power lines. However, superhydrophobic anti-icing surfaces as well as traditional mechanical and chemical means can hardly coordinate the high anti-icing efficiency with the durable reusability, energy expenditure or environmental impact. Herein, a sustainable, low-cost and dual-action bilayer bamboo (BLB) sheet is developed by bamboo carbonization and surface hydrogel coating. This BLB laminate consisting of a carbonized bamboo (CB) substrate as photo-absorber and thermal insulator and a gel layer as absorber and heat spreader exhibit highly efficient anti-freezing and de-icing performances by converting solar illumination to heat and ion-specifically inhibiting heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN). This BLB shows remarkable comprehensive performances of low ice adhesion (τ ice ≈ 0 kPa above −25 °C), good photothermal conversion effectiveness (k T =0.52), great recyclability (switchable dual modes), and enhanced HIN inhibition (T H = −25 °C and t H = 1322 s). We provide the single and synergistic mechanisms governing the photothermal trapping and ion-induced HIN inhibition. We demonstrate the frozen drop melting, ice block self-moving and large-area snow removing efficacy on BLB as a convenient and long-lasting anti-icing biomass-based covering material via laboratory-scale and outdoor experiments.

Dimensionally Stable Delignified Bamboo Matrix Phase-Change Composite under Ambient Temperature for Indoor Thermal Regulation

Qinchen Duan,Xin Zhang,Shuang Lang,Guowei Liu,Hui Wang,Xiaojian Zhou,Guanben Du

Energy storage materials to modulate indoor microclimates are needed to improve energy efficiency and for human comfort. Of these, phase-change material (PCM) is considered a very useful material because of its excellent latent heat energy storage. For application, some synthetic porous materials for supporting PCM are usually not friendly enough for people and housing environments due to their non-degradation characteristics. Hence, to develop an eco-friendly porous material is needed in order to encapsulate PCM composites that are always expected in indoor applications. In this work, heat-treated bamboo bricks were delignified to provide a delignified bamboo (DB) matrix. A phase-change composite was then fabricated by impregnating DB with polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer. Impregnation was carried out under wet conditions to ensure the regular arrangement of the DB structure so as to achieve dimensional stability. The final DB/PEG composite was investigated for dimensional stability, load rate, latent heat, and phase-change temperature. Results showed that the DB matrix could be easily impregnated with PEG polymer under wet conditions, and the DB/PEG composite was found to have high enthalpy and a large phase-change temperature interval. Moreover, the composite was found to be a good regulator of indoor temperature and a stable dimension with a snow-white appearance. In summary, this DB/PEG composite is an energy storage material with the potential to modulate ambient indoor temperature and reduce building energy consumption. Keywords:delignified bamboo;polyethylene glycol;phase-change temperature;energy storage;dimensional stability

Design strategy of super tough hydrophobic bamboo framework composites with internal network entanglement reinforcing structure

Guoying Liu,Junyue Shan,Lijun Cao,Hangqi Zhao,Ce Sun,Haiyan Tan,Yanhua Zhang

The low strength and high hygroscopicity of natural bamboo limit its use in structural building materials. Herein, lignin and hemicellulose were partially removed from natural bamboo in order to create bamboo frameworks featuring well-aligned bamboo fibers. Subsequently, these bamboo frameworks (BF) are infused with epoxy resin (EP) modified with PDMS and subjected to hot-pressing to fabricate bamboo-epoxy composites (PDMS-EP/BF). The incorporation of flexible PDMS chains facilitated intermolecular chain entanglement, which inhibited crack propagation and improved the bonding between bamboo and EP. The findings of the research indicated that the PDMS-EP/BF composites exhibited a significant enhancement in flexural strength by 98%, modulus of elasticity by 129%, toughness by 399%, and tensile strength by 177% when compared to natural bamboo. Additionally, the modification led to a decrease in the surface energy of the composites, resulting in increased hydrostatic contact angle and imparting water repellency to the material. Compared to natural bamboo, PDMS-EP/BF has 309% higher water contact angle and 143% lower surface energy. In addition, large composites have been prepared and their interface strength was tested. The findings of the study offer insights into the potential enhancement of bamboo composites to achieve increased flexural strength, modulus, and toughness. This could expand the utilization and significance of bamboo in the realm of construction materials.
