Enhancing uranium adsorption performance through the introduction of a electron conjugation system on amidoximated phenyl natural bamboo strips

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Yan Song,Haotian Wu,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Qi Liu,Ying Li,Shusen Chen,Jun Wang

Commencing with the goal of establishing a more stable coordination structure for uranium, our approach drew inspiration from the alternating single and double bonds found in benzene rings and amidoxime groups. A uranium adsorption material featuring a π-electron conjugated system is devised. This system is designed by grafting 2-cyanobenzaldehyde, 3-cyanobenzaldehyde, and 4-cyanobenzaldehyde onto bamboo strips (BS) via aldol condensation and hydrolysis reactions, resulting in the creation of 2-amidoxime phenyl BS (oBS-AO), 3-amidoxime phenyl BS (mBS-AO), and 4-amidoxime phenyl BS (pBS-AO). Among these, oBS-AO exhibits not only the highest uranium adsorption performance (224.6 mg g −1 at pH = 6 and 1.3 mg g −1 in artificial simulated seawater) but also features the most robust π-electron conjugated system, as confirmed by computational and simulation data. Notably, the uranium adsorption capacity of mBS-AO is approximately 46.7 times that of vanadium in ion competition experiments simulating seawater conditions. To delve further into the adsorption mechanism, the role of electrostatic interactions and optimized simulated coordination structures is explored. It becomes evident that the primary adsorption mechanism relies on the formation of a pentacoordination structure, and the stability of this coordination structure iss directly influenced by the strength of the π-electron conjugated system. Furthermore, the double bridging effect of hydrogen bonds serves to further stabilize the coordination structure, facilitating the specific and selective adsorption of uranium.

“Bridging hydrogen bonds” from guanidine and amidoxime groups on natural bamboo strips as a superantibacterial and knitted adsorbent to efficiently adsorb uranium from simulated seawater

Donghua Jin,Ying Wang,Dalei Song,Jiahui Zhu,Jing Yu,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Rumin Li,Peili Liu,Jun Wang

Uranium adsorption from seawater can provide a sustainable development path for the future raw material supply of nuclear energy. However, in the process of uranium extraction from seawater, biofouling adheres to the surface of the adsorbent, wasting the adsorption sites and seriously affecting the adsorption capability of the adsorbent. Herein, inspired by the superanti-biofouling property of guanidine groups, a superantibacterial and knitted adsorbent with guanidine and amidoxime groups cografted on natural bamboo strips (G-AOBS) is synthesized to adsorb uranium from simulated seawater. The intrinsic structure of bamboo is not destroyed by the whole grafting process, and G-AOBS still maintains the porous and cellulose crystalline structure. The grafting of guanidine groups improves the hydrophilicity and significantly enhances the anti-biofouling performance, thereby increasing the adsorption capacity for uranium (q e  = 201.4 ± 13.23 mg g −1 at pH = 4 with C 0  = 100 mg L −1 and q e  = 1.04 ± 0.12 mg g −1 in simulated seawater with C 0  = 500 μg L −1 ). According to the results of DFT, the guanidine and amidoxime groups can not only replace one carbonate in uranyl tricarbonate alone to form a more stable coordination structure but also have a synergistic effect between the two, that is, using three “bridging hydrogen bonds” to form the most stable chelation mode with uranyl dicarbonate.

Simple one-step synthesis of woven amidoximated natural material bamboo strips for uranium extraction from seawater

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Qi Liu,Jiahui Zhu,Jingyuan Liu,Jing Yu,Rongrong Chen,Peili Liu,Jun Wang

The uranium(VI) (U(VI)) extraction from seawater was crucial for future energy problems such as increasingly depleted fossil fuels and serious environmental pollution , and it could improve the current situation of limited U(VI) reserves on land. In this study, the natural material bamboo strips (BS) were utilized due to the flexibility and richness of various functional groups, and the amidoximized bamboo strips (AOBS) could be directly prepared by a simple one-step method. The amidoximation of materials not only adjusted the optimal adsorption pH from 4 to 6, but also advanced the hydrophilicity, speeded up the reaction rate (adsorption equilibrium within 1 h, about 0.17 times of BS), and increased the adsorption capacity (q e  = 268.41 mg g −1 at pH = 6, about 1.7 times of BS). Importantly, the AOBS maintained its initial stitchability through flexibility adjustment, and was woven into a macro-shaped adsorbent (AOBS-M). After being placed in the Yellow Sea basin for 30 days, approximately 44.75 g of crude U(VI) (U(VI) content = 40.45 mg) was obtained (q e  = 0.97 mg g −1 ), and it showed the excellent selectivity for U(VI). The AOBS-M not only overcame the problem that the existing adsorption materials were difficult to achieve macroscopic large-area molding, but also realized the flexibility adjustment during the modification process by controlling the reaction conditions, and promoted the industrial development of U(VI) extraction from seawater.

Preparation and performance of fluorescent transparent bamboo

Zihao Wang,Jiewei Tong,Bingbin Kuai,Jingshu Gao,Yaoli Zhang,Maurizio Manzo,Liping Cai

In this study, the fluorescent transparent bamboo (FTB) with exceptional fluorescent performance was innovatively developed by adding fluorescent powder. The bamboo strips with a thickness of 1-mm were delignified and impregnated with epoxy resin. Then different amounts of fluorescent powder were added during the treatment. The comparison test results showed that, when the added amount of fluorescent powder was 2 wt% of epoxy resin mass, the overall properties of FTB were the best, illustrating the light transmittance of 77.3 %, haze of 56.4 %, tensile strength of 72.5 MPa, and relatively long luminescent time. The FTB prepared by this method possessed certain durability of optical properties, good thermal dimensional stability and the thermal conductivity was as low as 0.186 W m −1 K −1 . FTB has good hydrophobicity, that is, waterproof performance. It can be used for furniture, skirting and other building decoration materials.

Biofouling-resistant polyamidoxime-based natural hierarchical porous bamboo strips prepared by in-situ polymerization for uranium extraction from seawater

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Jing Yu,Jiahui Zhu,Jingyuan Liu,Qi Liu,Rongrong Chen,Peili Liu,Jun Wang

Effectively extracting uranium (VI) [U(VI)] from seawater requires efficient adsorbents. Generally, there are two major factors that affect the adsorption efficiency of adsorbents, including the biofouling around the adsorbents and the relative density of adsorption active sites. To enhance the practical application value of powdered polyamidoxime-based materials, macro-braidable and hierarchical porous bamboo strips (BS) with antibacterial properties are selected to synthetize polyamidoximized bamboo strips (PAOBS) by in-situ polymerization methods. On the one hand, natural BS have a bamboo quinone structure, and their intrinsic structure is not destroyed during the reaction process, which endows PAOBS with excellent antibacterial properties. In addition, PAOBS retains the hierarchical porous structure of BS, providing channels for the adsorption process, which is beneficial to achieve the maximum utilization of adsorption active sites. On the other hand, PAOBS increases the relative density of amidoxime functional groups, and its adsorption capacity (233 mg g −1 ) is approximately 2.14 times higher than that of pure PAO at pH= 6.0, including electrostatic effect and chelation mechanism. After PAOBS is floated in the Yellow Sea Basin for 30 days, its adsorption capacity for U(VI) reaches 1.03 mg g −1 . Importantly, the addition of BS increases the coordination modes with the uranyl ion, and the single coordination mode of CH(NH 2 )= N - O H from PAO is translated to the three mixed coordination modes of CH(NH 2 )= N - O H, CH( N H 2 )=N - O H, and CH( N H 2 )=N - OH and adjacent CH( N H 2 )=N - OH from PAOBS. Construction of PAOBS plays a role in the design of novel adsorbents with high relative density of adsorption active sites and biofouling-resistant, laying the steady foundation for further realizing sustainable U(VI) extraction from seawater.

Enhancing adsorption performance and selectivity for uranium by constructing biaxial adsorption sites on eco-friendly bamboo strips

Ying Wang,Zaiwen Lin,Jiahui Zhu,Jingyuan Liu,Jing Yu,Qi Liu,Rongrong Chen,Ying Li,Jun Wang

Amidoxime-based materials are currently the most promising adsorbents for sustainable extraction uranium from seawater. However, in practical applications, the strong affinity of amidoxime-based materials for vanadium seriously interferes with the extraction uranium from seawater. Herein, a novel environmentally friendly and degradable adsorbent is firstly designed through grafting animal protein on natural bamboo strips (BS). In detail, the casein hydrolysates (sodium caseinate, acid hydrolyzed casein and casein phosphopeptide) are grafted with amidoximated bamboo strips (SCAOBS, AHCAOBS and CPPAOBS) by chemical cross-linking and amide reactions to construct biaxial adsorption sites, including amidoxime and amino acid branched chains. The optimal adsorption pH of SCAOBS, AHCAOBS and CPPAOBS were 5, 7 and 7, the adsorption capacities were 186.3, 204.0 and 68.6 mg g −1 , and the attenuation was 23.1%, 17.7% and 20.2% after 5 cycles, respectively. Utilizing the weavability of BS, SCAOBS, AHCAOBS and CPPAOBS adsorbents are woven and floated in the Yellow Sea Basin, exhibiting that the adsorption capacity of uranium is 0.84, 1.21 and 0.81 mg g −1 , respectively, much higher than that of vanadium. Evenly, the adsorption capacity of AHCAOBS for uranium is about 15.3 times that of vanadium (0.077 mg g −1 ). Through DFT spatial structure optimization, there are indeed biaxial dual adsorption sites (–CO O H from amino acid and C =  N - O H from amidoxime groups) between amino acids and amidoxime branched chains, and even the spatial structure of biaxial triple adsorption sites (–CO O H from amino acid, O  = C-N from amide bond and C =  N -OH from amidoxime groups) is more stable, thereby breaking this bottleneck from the vanadium interference for the amidoxime-based adsorption materials.

A spindle-shaped phosphotungstic acid loaded amidoximated natural bamboo strip for extracting uranium

Yan Feng,Yuxi Li,Shengxuan Gao,Yue Tao,Ying Zhang

Background Inorganic materials with high O/N content for Uranium Extraction from Seawater (UES) show fast-adsorption rate, but practical applications are limited by their easy dispersion, difficult recovery, and poor selectivity. Therefore, inspired by the macroscopic large-area molding, antibacterial properties, and hierarchical porous microstructure of bamboo strips (BS), a nanoscale spindle-shaped phosphotungstic acid (PTA) loaded amidoximated BS (AOBS) as the inorganic/organic composite material with high O/N content is designed and applied to extracting uranium. Methods Under the effects of the hydrogen bonding crosslinking, the protonation process of -NH 2 , the physical limitations of PEG molecular chains, and others, a nanoscale spindle-shaped PTA loaded fibrous AOBS (PW 12 AOBS) is successfully synthesized by chemical cross-linking and hydrothermal methods. Significant Findings PW 12 AOBS has the super-hydrophilic surface and ultra-fast infiltration rate, so that it exhibits an excellent antibacterial performance and a super-fast adsorption rate. When the contact time is 5 mins, the adsorption capacity is 195.6 mg·g −1 , and a removal rate of uranium is 78.2 %. The highest removal rate of uranium is 82.6 %, and the adsorption capacity reaches 343.6 μg·g −1 in simulated seawater. The terminal OH/-COOH and bridging W = O from PW 12 AOBS synchronously act as the active sites for extracting uranium.
