To improve the interfacial interaction between poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and bamboo particles (BP), sodium hydroxide solution was employed to pretreat BP, and then maleic anhydride (MAH) was used to compatibilize PLA/BP biocomposites. The biocomposites were prepared through melt blending and hot-pressing. Effects of MAH concentration on the properties of BP and PLA/BP biocomposites were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, mechanical measurements, differential scanning calorimetric, melt flow rate (MFR) analysis and scanning electron microscope. Results showed that interfacial interaction between PLA and BP in the biocomposites was improved with MAH compatibilizer. Tensile strength and elongation at break of PLA/BP biocomposites, reached maximal values of 47.6 MPa and 6.22 %, respectively, when treated with 1.0 % MAH. Maximal flexural strength of 72.61 MPa and flexural modulus of 4.65 GPa were obtained with 0.5 % MAH treatment, and thermal properties were also improved at this concentration. MFR of the blends was enhanced with MAH compatibilization.

Unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with good chemical resistance, excellent mechanical properties, and formaldehyde-free shows great potentials in the wood industry. In this study, the mechanical strength, thermostability, dynamic thermomechanical property, and interfacial bonding of bamboo particle boards (BPBs) made from UPR adhesives with toluene diisocyanate (TDI) as the coupling agent were explored. The results showed that covalent bonds were formed among TDI, bamboo particles, and UPR, which could significantly enhance the mechanical strength. The internal bonding strength, modulus of elasticity, and modulus of rupture of treated BPBs were 1.36, 3010, and 19.6 MPa with the increment of 1250, 514, and 833%, respectively, compared to the control samples. Also, the thickness swelling rate of the BPB was 4.6%, much lower than that of the control, with a decrease of 92%. The thermostability of the treated BPB was also improved. As a result, the BPB using UPR as the adhesive and TDI as the coupling agent shows better usability, higher efficiency, and excellent mechanical strength.

The development of eco-friendly adhesives derived from renewable sources to replace conventional petroleum-based alternatives could promote the achievement of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Herein, a series of plant oil thermosets were developed from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) and a palm oil-based dimethacrylate (MPOEA), and then used as the adhesives for developing formaldehyde-free bamboo particleboards . Concerning the weak cohesion and adhesion forces of the adhesives, 2-isocyanethyl methacrylate (IEM) was incorporated to enhance both the crosslinking density within the thermosets and the bonding strength between bamboo particles and the thermosetting materials. The addition of IEM resulted in a notable improvement in the processability, mechanical characteristics, thermal resistance, and lap-shear strength of the thermosets. The thermosets with optimum components attained a tensile strength of 29.7 MPa, a glass transition temperature of 106.9 °C, and a shear strength of 1.7 MPa onto bamboo. The prepared bamboo particleboards exhibited superior mechanical properties, water resistance, and high-temperature resistance.
