Facile preparation of metal-organic frameworks-8 (ZIF-8) and its simultaneous adsorption of tetracycline (TC) and minocycline (MC) from aqueous solutions

Summaira Saghir,Zhenggang Xiao

ZIF-8 nanoparticles were prepared through the simple and facile method at room temperature and subsequently applied for the simultaneous adsorption of two antibiotics, tetracycline (TC) and minocycline (MC). The prepared ZIF-8 exhibits regular rhombic dodecahedron having meso and macropores structure with a specific surface area of 1516.06 (m²/g), indicating that ZIF-8 could be an ideal adsorbent material for the adsorption of antibiotics. Moreover, the adsorption conditions were optimized in detail. All the characterizations of ZIF-8 after adsorption reveal the successful adsorption of TC and MC on ZIF-8. The adsorption kinetics and isothermal data of both antibiotics fitted well with the pseudo second order and Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption behaviour of TC and MC on ZIF-8 was based mainly on electrostatics and π - π stacking interactions. This study revealed that ZIF-8 could be used as a useful adsorbent in treating wastewater contaminated with multiple antibiotics.

Modulation of polymorphic structure of Ag/Ce–MOFs materials and its adsorption mechanism of Minocycline in water

Lei Zhang,Tian Ai,Nan Zhang

Minocycline (MNC), as a second-generation semi-synthetic derivative of tetracycline, poses a potential carcinogenic threat to organisms in water, therefore high efficient removal of MNC is becoming a crucial key for water quality safety. This study has been successfully synthesized Ag/Ce bimetallic–doped MOF materials with diverse morphological characteristics by using microwave digestion and solvothermal methods, and it was demonstrated a significant adsorption potential in MNC from aqueous solutions. The characterization results were revealed that Ce exhibits oxygen vacancy enrichment as the central metal in MOFs, while Ag was distributed on carbon framework in the form of Ag 0 NPs, both of morphological features were provided more active sites for adsorption. The Ag/Ce–MOFs was achieved 98.26 % exceptional MNC adsorption efficiency at pH 9, which was followed a multilayer exothermic chemisorption mechanism. The results were shown that the maximum adsorption capacity of Ag/Ce-MOFs was 476.2 mg/g in Langmuir model, which was much more substantially surpassed than Ce–MOFs. In addition, the adsorption process was primarily mediated through hydrogen bonding, ligand interactions and amidation reactions. Furthermore, the Ag/Ce–MOFs exhibited the excellent regeneration performance and broad applicability, which was shown remarkable adsorption potential in removing various other pharmaceutical contaminants in water. In summarization, the synthesized Ag/Ce–MOFs by microwave digestion and solvothermal technology, were demonstrated the board promising prospects in efficient MNC removal in water treatment applications.

Selective and Rapid Detection of Minocycline in Milk Using a Novel Fluorescence Conjugated Polymer Probe

Gong Lindan,Zhang Lin,Wang Hengyuan,Sun Yan,Zhang Hongju,Fan Lu-an

Minocycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic widely used in clinical and veterinary medicine and its adverse effects are as prominent as its potent efficacy. To avoid its abuse and accumulation, it is very important to detect minocycline in medical science, food industry, and aquaculture industry. Here, a conjugated polymer probe for minocycline is prepared and its optical properties and fluorescence response to minocycline is studied. The quenching efficiency is linear relevant with the amount of minocycline at the concentration range of 0–12 µM in PBS and 0–28 µM in ethanol with the limit of detection of 0.0151 µM. Moreover, the standard addition recoveries of minocycline in skim milk samples are between 92.22 and 104.43%, and the relative standard deviation values are less than 3%. These results imply that the probe has a great potential for detecting minocycline in actual samples with simplify, rapidity, and sensitivity.

Preparation of Y/Cr-MOFs and minocycline removal from aqueous solution

Fuhua Wei,Fang Lan,Qinhui Ren,Hongliang Chen,Yutao Zhang,Zhao Liang

The Y/Cr-MOFs were synthesized via solvothermal treatment using 1, 3, 5-benzoic acid as the organic ligand and yttrium acetate hydrate and chromium acetate as the metal ions. The structures of the prepared Y/Cr-MOFs were characterized using FT-IR, XRD, TG, and SEM techniques. These characterized Y/Cr-MOFs were employed to investigate the adsorption efficiency of minocycline. Experimental findings indicate that minocycline adsorption by Y/Cr-MOFs follows both the second-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm. Within a span of 5 h, up to 90.4 % of minocycline can be adsorbed by Y/Cr-MOFs at pH 6. Moreover, a maximum removal capacity of minocycline reaching 506 mg/g was achieved with Y/Cr-MOFs. These results demonstrate the practical application potential of utilizing Y/Cr-MOFs for efficient minocycline adsorption.

Polydopamine-Coated Magnetic Nanoplatform for Magnetically Guided Penetration and Enhanced Antibacterial Efficacy in Root Canal Biofilm Elimination

Xingchen Xu,Pei Wang,Fei Tong,Yifan Liu,Xinyang Hu,Jian Yang,Jun Guo

Clinical root canal therapy which takes place through mechanical and chemical strategies is faced with challenges in eliminating bacteria owing to the intricate and curved nature of the root canal system. Moreover, the plaque biofilm within the root canal hinders drug penetration and limits treatment efficacy. Hence, efficient root canal therapy hinges on penetrating into the root canal and overcoming the barriers presented by the plaque biofilms. To penetrate and eradicate biofilms effectively at the root canal, we designed a novel magnetic nanoparticle (MN)-based nanoplatform which was synthesized by the self-polymerization of dopamine on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 MNs, and then loaded minocycline through the electrostatic interaction. The therapeutic efficacy of minocycline-loaded magnetic nanoparticles (FDM MNs) under a magnetostatic field was observed by various antibacterial experiments. The synthesized FDM MNs exhibited favorable biocompatibility and robust anti-biofilm efficacy. The designed nanoparticles could effectively navigate biofilms to eradicate bacteria residing deep with the assistance of magnetic force. Furthermore, FDM MNs penetrated into dentin tubules under a magnetic field, effectively disrupting biofilms for deep sterilization. The significant results offered valuable experimental evidence to support the potential clinical utility of magnetic nanoparticles for managing pulpitis and periapical inflammation.

Concentration-Optimized Minocycline-Modified Antimicrobial Coatings on Polyetheretherketone for the Prevention of Implant-Associated Infections

Yongheng Zhang,Longyu Zhang,Yuehong Zhang,Pingping Yu,Qisheng Hu,Ying Liu,Yanyan Zheng

Implant-associated infections (IAIs) are major complications in dental and orthopedic implants, potentially compromising osseointegration and eventually causing implant loosening or removal. Thus, early prevention of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation is critical for successful long-term osseointegration. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) exhibits excellent physicochemical properties and an elastic modulus similar to bone tissue, making it a promising material for dental and orthopedic implants. However, its inherent lack of antibacterial properties limits its ability to prevent IAIs. Herein, an antibacterial coating with controlled drug release and excellent biocompatibility is designed by immobilizing minocycline (Mino)-doped carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) onto the PEEK surface via a polydopamine (PDA)-mediated Michael addition and Schiff base reaction. The coating is characterized by SEM, XPS, water contact angle measurements, and in vitro Mino release assays. Antibacterial activity is evaluated using the zone of inhibition (ZOI), turbidity, and colony counting assays, while biocompatibility is assessed through a SEM analysis of cell morphology and CCK-8 assay. The results show that the Mino-modified coating is successfully fabricated on the PEEK surface, achieving sustained Mino release for up to 14 days. Among the three Mino concentrations, the PEEK-0.5Mino group demonstrates the best balance of antibacterial activity and biocompatibility, highlighting its potential for preventing IAIs in orthopedic and dental applications.

Magnetic ordered mesoporous carbon materials for adsorption of minocycline from aqueous solution: Preparation, characterization and adsorption mechanism

Xiang Hu,Lanjun Jia,Jie Cheng,Zhirong Sun

In this paper, the effect of cyanoguanidine (CNGE) for tailoring pore size during the soft-templating preparation of mesoporous carbon materials was studied. In consideration of cyclic utilization, the surface of the mesoporous carbon materials were doped with magnetic Fe 3 O 4 particles. The characterization results (including TEM, XRD, BET, TGA and FT-IR) showed that adding CNGE did not destroy the ordered porous structure; instead, it changed the pore size from 2.98 nm to 9.42 nm. Besides, the mesoporous carbon materials exhibited a strong magnetic response owing to the dopant of Fe 3 O 4 particles. With the increase in CNGE, some functional groups were added to the surface of the mesoporous carbon materials, which partly promoted the adsorption effect. The results indicated that adsorption approached equilibrium in the first 10 min and reached the maximum when the pore size was 5.89 nm. The kinetic of minocycline adsorption on magnetic ordered mesoporous carbon material could be interpreted by a pseudo-first-order model. The adsorption isotherms showed that the adsorption process was complex, combining physical and weak chemical adsorption, in good agreement with the Sips model.

Design and development of minocycline-loaded, thermally responsive polymeric nanoparticles for targeted delivery to activated microglia/macrophages in spinal cord injury model: A novel therapeutic strategy

Zhu Jianjin,Sun Changjiao,Yang Huadong,Xu Zhengkuan

Functional motor recovery in spinal cord injury (SCI) is a highly challenging field in biomedical treatment. Minocycline is an effective drug agent for microtubule inhibition and neurite outgrowth of cultured neurons in SCI treatment. In the present report, a facile drug delivery system was designed using a chitosan-assisted thermoresponsive polymer to provide sustained release of minocycline from the copolymeric matrix. Additionally, curcumin nanoparticles encapsulated with a copolymeric matrix have been shown to stimulate anti-inflammatory, functional recovery, and effective neuroprotective effects. The distribution of curcumin nanoparticles into a copolymer drug carrier system with thermo-responsive abilities improved sustained delivery, blood bioavailability, stability, and biocompatibility. These results demonstrated that minocycline-loaded Cur-CS/PNIPAM provides enhanced neuroprotection, axonal growth efficiency, and potentially facilitates functional recovery at the site of SCI injury. Therefore, our data offer a facile combination therapeutic strategy for the treatment and recovery of SCI in humans.

Minocycline protects against myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats by upregulating MCPIP1 to inhibit NF-κB activation

Yi Quan,Tan Fang-hui,Tan Jia-an,Chen Xiu-hui,Xiao Qing,Liu Ying-hua,Zhang Gui-ping,Luo Jian-dong

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic and has been shown to play a protective role in cerebral and myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we investigated whether monocyte chemotactic protein-induced protein-1 (MCPIP1), a negative regulator of inflammation, was involved in the minocycline-induced cardioprotection in myocardial I/R in vivo and in vitro models. Myocardial ischemia was induced in rats by left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion for 1 h and followed by 48 h reperfusion. Minocycline was administered prior to ischemia (45 mg/kg, ip, BID, for 1 d) and over the course of reperfusion (22.5 mg/kg, ip, BID, for 2 d). Cardiac function and infarct sizes were assessed. Administration of minocycline significantly decreased the infarct size, alleviated myocardial cell damage, elevated left ventricle ejection fraction, and left ventricle fractional shortening following I/R injury along with significantly decreased pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1β and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) levels in heart tissue. H9c2 cardiomyocytes were subjected to oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) followed by reoxygenation (OGD/R). Pretreatment with minocycline (1−50 μmol/L) dose-dependently increased the cell viability and inhibited OGD/R-induced expression of MCP-1 and IL-6. Furthermore, minocycline dose-dependently inhibited nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 in H9c2 cells subjected to OGD/R. In both the in vivo and in vitro models, minocycline significantly increased MCPIP1 protein expression; knockdown of MCPIP1 with siRNA in H9c2 cells abolished all the protective effects of minocycline against OGD/R-induced injury. Our results demonstrate that minocycline alleviates myocardial I/R injury via upregulating MCPIP1, then subsequently inhibiting NF-κB activation and pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion.

Degradation of Minocycline by the Adsorption–Catalysis Multifunctional PVDF–PVP–TiO2 Membrane: Degradation Kinetics, Photocatalytic Efficiency, and Toxicity of Products

Chengzhi Zhou,Yanlong Sun,Fan Zhang,Yuandong Wu

The photocatalytic degradation of minocycline was studied by using polyvinylidene fluoride–polyvinylpyrrolidone–TiO2(PVDF–PVP–TiO2) fiber mats prepared by an electrospinning technology. The influences of the TiO2dosage, minocycline concentrations, inorganic anions, pH values, and dissolved organic matter (DOM) concentrations on the degradation kinetics were investigated. A mass of 97% minocycline was degraded in 45 min at 5% TiO2dosage. The corresponding decomposition rate constant was 0.069 min−1. The inorganic anions affected the minocycline decomposition in the order of HCO3−> Cl−> SO42−> NO3−, which was confirmed by the results of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra. The lowest electrical energy per order (EEO) was 6.5 Wh/L. Over five cycles, there was no change in the photocatalytic performance of the degrading minocycline. Those investigations suggested that effective degradation of minocycline could be reached in the PVDF–PVP–TiO2fiber mats with a low energy consumption, good separation and, good recovery. Three photocatalytic decomposition pathways of minocycline were proposed: (i) hydroxyl substitution of the acylamino group; (ii) hydroxyl substitution of the amide group, and (iii) a cleavage of the methyl groups and further oxidation of the amino group by OH. Potential risks caused by TP159 and TP99 should not be ignored, while the TP90 are nontoxic. Tests indicated that the toxicity of the photocatalytic process may be persistent if minocycline and its products were not mineralized completely. Keywords:electrospinning;minocycline;photocatalytic oxidation;PVDF–PVP–TiO2fiber mats;degradation mechanism

High-performance electrochemical detection for trace minocycline based on boron-doped-diamond/carbon nanowalls biosensor

Linfeng Wan,Yaqi Liang,Mingchao Yang,Qiuxia Zhang,Siyu Xu,Shaoheng Cheng,Nan Gao,Danhong Zhang,Yibo Ma

Highly sensitive electrochemical detection of trace minocycline (MCL), one of the most important antibiotics, presents a challenge due to the lack of suitable substrates and low detection efficiency. In this work, an electrochemical biosensor with an electrode consisting of boron-doped diamond (BDD) and carbon nanowalls (CNWs) (named BDD/CNWs) is designed for the detection of MCL. The electrochemical behavior of MCL at varying scan rates suggests an adsorption-controlled mechanism dominating the process on the BDD/CNWs electrode. The sensor demonstrates good linearity in the range from 0.02 to 100 μM and achieved a limit of detection as low as 9.8 nM, ascribed to the synergistic effect of the combination of BDD with CNWs, which provide a broad potential window (2.63 V), more reaction sites, and low charge transfer resistance (87 Ω) from the electrode. Examinations of trace MCL in citric acid-phosphate buffer, tap water, rat blood, as well as interference tests, reveal high sensitivity, specificity, stability, and repeatability of the BDD/CNWs electrode, which shows promise for practical applications.

Regeneration of porous electrospun membranes embedding alumina nanoparticles saturated with minocycline by UV radiation

Yuandong Wu,Yanlong Sun,Chengzhi Zhou,Junfeng Niu

A regeneration method for porous electrospun membranes embedding alumina nanoparticles saturated with minocycline was investigated by UV-LED system. The percentage of adsorption capacities before and after regeneration were used to evaluate regeneration efficiency. The PVDF and PVDF-Al 2 O 3 fiber mats were prepared by electrospinning technique. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses directly confirmed that Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles were generally exposed to the surface of PVDF-Al 2 O 3 fiber mats. Among them, PVDF-Al 2 O 3 10% fiber mats can effectively adsorb minocycline (remove efficiency >97% in 18 h) with first-order rate constant k  = 2.253 ± 0.331 h −1 . The sorption capacity can still keep 81% after five sorption/UV-regeneration circulations. Two successional stages may exist during regeneration: (i) transfer of minocycline from the surface of PVDF-Al 2 O 3 fibers to the DI water , followed by the (ii) decomposition of this compound in aqueous solution by direct and indirect photolysis to yield the intermediate species. The desorption capacity and desorption percentage were 4.39 mg g −1 and 23.30% respectively. The regeneration yields were further enhanced to 94.20% by UV radiation. Minocycline was effectively degraded to intermediate products by direct and indirect photolysis, further degraded into CO 2 , H 2 O, and NO x by UV-generated ozone during regeneration. The results indicated that UV radiation was an effective method of regenerating PVDF-Al 2 O 3 fiber mats with low energy requirements. The photochemical byproducts and the reaction sites during regeneration were also determined and recognized.
