Bonding of wood with high strength and excellent water resistant cellulose colloidal adhesives

Yuyan Jiang,Tian Ju,Liangxian Liu,Haiyu Li,Yue Zhang,Na Wang,Zetan Lu,Ming Wei,Dexiu Min,Yanjun Xie,Jian Li,Yonggui Wang,Shaoliang Xiao

Development of a high-strength bio-based adhesive using simple, environment-friendly method is of great significance, as an alternative to petroleum-based adhesives. In this paper, Cellulose colloidal adhesives (CCA) with high stability and good reactivity were prepared by selective activation of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) using sodium periodate under acidic conditions, with colloidal sizes ranging from nanometers to micrometers. CCA was applied to different types of veneer (poplar/beech/pine) to prepare 3-ply plywood. Compared to conventional activated cellulose adhesives, the CCA plywood showed excellent water resistance, dry/wet tensile shear strength of 3.7 MPa/1.6 MPa, met the requirements of Chinese national standards (GB/T 9846–2015). The excellent water resistance of CCA plywood was attributed to several factors. The colloidal particles filled the cell lumina of the wood, creating a mechanical interlocking effect. Additionally, CCA self-crosslinked to form stable intermolecular forces, the formation of cellulose nanocrystals by selective activation has an enhancing effect for CCA, while covalent and non-covalent bonds were established between CCA and the wood. Meanwhile, CCA has been shown to be universally applicable to cellulose extracted from various types of wood. This study realized the virtuous cycle of “from wood to wood”.

Cation-Dipole Interaction-Induced Coacervate Underwater Adhesives in Natural Seawater

Liu Xu-Fei,Zhang Chong-Rui,Peng Hua-Wen,Zhao Qiang

Significant progress has been made in wet adhesives for low salinity water, but exploration of general ionic adhesives for natural seawater is less developed because the high salinity could weaken interfacial bonding and shields electrostatic interactions, resulting in adhesion failure. Thus, the design of adhesives for natural seawater represents challenges less resolved. Herein, a cationic polyelectrolyte (PECHIA) containing imidazolacetonitrile unit was explored to prepare adhesives enabled by natural seawater. By combining the ion shielding effect with the “cation-dipole” interactions between PECHIA chains, aqueous solution of the PECHIA underwent coacervation and self-crosslinking in natural seawater, allowing for underwater adhesion to various substrates in seawater. The instantaneous lap-shear and tensile adhesion strengths are 47 and 119 kPa, respectively, while the cured adhesive shows ∼739 kPa tensile adhesion in natural seawater. The design of PECHIA enables wet adhesives viable for applications in the diversified scenarios of natural seawater.

A Study on the Materials Used in the Ancient Architectural Paintings from the Qing Dynasty Tibetan Buddhist Monastery of Puren, China

Gele Teri,Kezhu Han,Dan Huang,Yanli Li,Yuxiao Tian,Xiaolian Chao,Zhihui Jia,Peng Fu,Yuhu Li

Situated in the village of Lama Temple on the eastern bank of the Wulie River in Chengde, Puren Temple stands as one of the few remaining royal temples of great importance from the Kangxi era (1662–1722 AD). This ancient edifice has greatly contributed to the advancement of our comprehension regarding the art of royal temple painting. The present study undertakes a comprehensive analysis and identification of nine samples obtained from the beams and ceiling paintings within the main hall of Puren Temple. Furthermore, a systematic examination of their mineral pigments and adhesives is conducted. The findings from polarized light microscopy (PLM), energy-type X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (ED-XRF), micro-Raman spectroscopy (m-RS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analyses reveal that the pigments present in the main hall beams of Puren Temple are cinnabar, lead white, lapis lazuli, and lime green, while the pigments in the ceiling paintings consist of cinnabar, staghorn, lead white, lapis lazuli, and lime green. The use of animal glue as a binder for these pigments on both the main hall beams and ceiling paintings is confirmed via pyrolysis-gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-Gc/Ms) results. These findings hold significant implications for the future restoration of Puren Temple, as they provide valuable guidance for the selection of appropriate restoration materials. Keywords:pigment analyses;building conservation;adhesive

Strong and Reusable Biobased Multiblock Copolyester Adhesives

Hongsheng Wang,Shishuai Gao,Yitong Xie,Xiaoyu Shi,Chenhuan Lai,Daihui Zhang,Chunpeng Wang,Fuxiang Chu

The development of sustainable and recyclable adhesives simultaneously requiring high strength and ductility is challengeable. Herein, we synthesized furan ring-containing copolyesters as sustainable, strong, and tough adhesives. FTIR and 1H NMR analyses confirmed the successful synthesis of copolyesters. Furthermore, structures and physiochemical properties of copolyesters were easily tunable by varying the feeding ratio of comonomers. The obtained copolyesters exhibited several interesting features as adhesives, which synergistically resulted in superior adhesion behavior, including high adhesion strength (12.60 MPa), satisfactory toughness (work of debonding = 2623 N m–1), wide temperature adaptability (adhesion strength = 8.23 MPa at −70 °C and 3.83 MPa at 100 °C), and excellent solvent resistance (9.27 MPa of adhesion strength in N,N-dimethylformamide after 24 h). The present work significantly advances and provides perspectives on the design of strong and tough sustainable adhesives.

Intrinsically flame-retardant and biodegradable DDP-based adhesives for wet environments

Qi Jiang,Han Hu,Jinhao Sun,Weihong Cao,Qingyang Luan,Hanxu Zhu,Weiqi Chen,Peng Liang,Jinggang Wang,Jin Zhu

Adhesives have been increasingly utilized in multifaceted applications, such as furniture, electrical appliances, and buildings. Currently, in addition to fundamental requirements for high adhesiveness, there are increasing demands for environmental sustainability, flame retardancy, and high-performance in extreme conditions. (6H-dibenz[c,e][1,2]oxaphosphorin-6-ylmethyl)-p-oxide-butanedioic acid (DDP) is selected to be incorporated into the Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) backbone, enabling the synthesis of a novel adhesive (poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate-co-phosphaphenanthrene) (PBATDn). Due to the π-π stacking of DDP, PBATD 20 exhibits an extremely high adhesion strength of 11 N/cm. Owing to the hydrophobicity of the aromatic ring and the insensitivity of π-π stacking to water, PBATD 20 maintains a high adhesion even after being immersed in water for 15 days, thus meeting the requirements for wet-environment applications. In addition to meeting the demand for adhesives, PBATD 20 has been shown to reduce the potential fire risk. DDP releases phosphorus-oxygen free radicals to capture the ·H or ·OH radicals generated by polymer burning, effectively inhibiting the burning process. PBATD 20 leaves some compact char residues that act as barriers to slow down the transfer of heat, oxygen, and combustible gases, showing excellent flame retardancy. Furthermore, PBATD 20 exhibits a superior biodegradation capacity in Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) at 37 ℃ compared with PBAT, thus reducing environmental pollution. PBATD 20 is considered highly suitable for diverse applications in daily production and consumer use, including degradable packaging adhesion, electronics assembly, and the bonding of environmentally friendly building materials.

Preparation of high self-healing efficient crosslink HTPB adhesive for improving debonding of propellant interface

Jing Tu,Heng Xu,Li Liang,Pingyun Li,Xiaode Guo

The problem of debonding the interface between propellant grain and propellant coating has been a tricky problem that has puzzled many scholars. Self-healing adhesives are expected to solve this problem. Herein, we studied the most widely used HTPB system in composite propellants. By adopting free radical polymerized HTPB as the soft segment of the adhesive and introducing aromatic disulfides, we successfully prepared a self-healing polyurethane adhesive. The adhesive can self-heal at a safe temperature of 80 °C, with an elongation at break of more than 700% and a self-healing efficiency of up to 97%, and has excellent thermal stability. The interface self-healing experiment showed that the adhesive can recover the debonding damage at the interface. Our results will provide a new insight into the rebonding of the interface between propellant grain and coating.

Cartilage-inspired boronic ester dynamic cross-linking networks for high-strength and reversible adhesives

Xuebin Lian,Yuanjian Li,Minghui Li,Yongxin Bai,Xinyu Zhao,Jiangwen Li,Shujun Zhao

Achieving simultaneous exceptional adhesion and recyclability remains a formidable challenge due to the inherent strength-toughness trade-off and stability-switchability conflict in adhesive systems. Inspired by the hierarchical architecture of cartilage, we report a bioinspired cross-linked network integrating B-N coordination bonds and dynamic boronic ester linkages for high-performance recyclable adhesives. The biomimetic design replicates the structural organization of cartilage's collagen-proteoglycan matrix, where dynamic B-N coordination bonds between network junctions facilitate energy dissipation through bond dissociation-induced network elongation. The network is constructed via 3-amino-1,2-propanediol-mediated epoxy ring-opening and subsequent cross-linking with 1,4-phenylenediboronic acid, forming a dynamic covalent polymer network, denoted as BEAD (boronic ester adhesive), with high cross-linking density. BEAD exhibits exceptional mechanical properties (46.42 ± 5.32 MPa tensile strength, 2.60 ± 0.31 MJ/m³ toughness) and robust adhesion (26.69 ± 0.74 MPa lap shear strength on steel). The synergy of B-N coordination (enhancing cohesion) and boronic ester exchange (enabling reprocessability) yields an optimal balance of strength and recyclability, retaining 80.7% adhesion performance after five reprocessing cycles. The study presents a biomimetic dynamic bonding strategy to overcome the strength-recyclability trade-off in adhesives, establishing a sustainable paradigm for structural materials.

The Multi-Step Chain Extension for Waterborne Polyurethane Binder of Para-Aramid Fabrics

Ge Ma,Qianshu Wang,Jun Ye,Lifan He,Longhai Guo,Xiaoyu Li,Teng Qiu,Xinlin Tuo

The comprehensive balance of the mechanical, interfacial, and environmental requirements of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has proved challenging, but crucial in the specific application as the binder for high-performance polymer fiber composites. In this work, a multi-step chain extension (MCE) method was demonstrated using three kinds of small extenders and one kind of macro-chain extender (CE) for different chain extension steps. One dihydroxyl blocked small molecular urea (1,3-dimethylolurea, DMU) was applied as one of the CEs and, through the hybrid macrodiol/diamine systems of polyether, polyester, and polysiloxane, the WPU was developed by the step-by-step optimization on each chain extending reaction via the characterization on the H-bonding association, microphase separation, and mechanical properties. The best performance was achieved when the ratio of polyether/polyester was controlled at 6:4, while 2% of DMU and 1% of polysiloxane diamine was incorporated in the third and fourth chain extension steps, respectively. Under the condition, the WPU exhibited not only excellent tensile strength of 30 MPa, elongation of break of about 1300%, and hydrophobicity indicated by the water contact angle of 98°, but also effective interfacial adhesion topara-aramid fabrics. The peeling strength of the joint based on the polysiloxane incorporated WPU after four steps of chain extension was 430% higher than that prepared through only two steps of chain extension. Moreover, about 44% of the peeling strength was sustained after the joint had been boiling for 40 min in water, suggesting the potential application for high-performance fabric composites. Keywords:waterborne polyurethane;chain extension;binder;para-aramid

Strength and toughness of tissue adhesives depend on thickness

Wenlei Zhang,Yang Gao,Yifan Zhou,Hou Wu,Zhigang Suo,Tongqing Lu

Adhesives are commonly assessed by two properties: strength and toughness. Here we study how strength and toughness are affected by adhesive thickness. We sandwich gelatin adhesives of various thicknesses between glass substrates. The transparency of the adhesives and substrates enables us to observe crack nucleation and growth. We measure strength by lap shear of samples without precrack, and measure toughness by lap shear of samples with precrack. Our data show a characteristic adhesive thickness, about 0.5 mm. For adhesives below the characteristic thickness, strength is independent of thickness, but toughness increases with thickness. For adhesives above the characteristic thickness, strength decreases as thickness increases, but toughness is a constant. Strength scatters narrowly for samples of a thin adhesive, but broadly for samples of a thick adhesive. By contrast, toughness scatters narrowly for samples of all thicknesses. This work shows the importance of assessing adhesives of various thicknesses.

Kirigami-inspired adhesion with high directional asymmetry

Qi Li,Weixuan Liu,Canhui Yang,Ping Rao,Pengyu Lv,Huiling Duan,Wei Hong

Robust adhesion to and effortless removal from various substrates are of great importance to soft adhesives in myriad applications. However, controlled regulation between strong attachment and easy detachment in a same system remains challenging. Herein, we report a kirigami-inspired approach to control adhesion with high directional asymmetry. By inscribing a specially designed labyrinth pattern in an adhesive film , the adhesion is enhanced against peeling along a particular direction – the peak peel force builds up at a much smaller peeling angle, and the adhesion energy climbs through in-plane elastic dissipaters. Such a mechanism is inactive when the adhesive is peeled in the opposite direction, and easy detachment is experienced. The underlying physics is elucidated via theoretical and numerical analyses and verified through experiments by using hydrogel adhesives with different elastic moduli and geometric parameters . The asymmetric adhesion can be further enhanced over soft substrates or by designing hierarchical structures – increases by up to 22 folds in strength and 7 folds in energy have been observed. The proposed mechanism is universally applicable to various intermolecular interactions and different loading modes, and can pave the way to engineering new adhesives with superior yet controllable adhesion performance.

Synthesis and characterization of a bio-aldehyde-based lignin adhesive with desirable water resistance

Huali Lin,Xinyi Chen,Hong Lei,Xiaojian Zhou,Guanben Du,Hisham Essawy,Xuedong Xi,Defa Hou,Jiaxuan Song,Ming Cao

Wood-based panels find widespread application in the furniture and construction industries. However, over 90 % of adhesives used are synthesized with formaldehyde, leading to formaldehyde emission and associated health risks. In this study, an entirely bio-based adhesive (OSL) was innovatively proposed through the condensation of multi-aldehyde derived from the oxidization of sucrose (OS) with sodium lignosulfonate (L). This approach positioned oxidized sucrose (OS) as a viable substitute for formaldehyde, ensuring safety, simplicity, and enhance water resistance upon reaction with L. The optimization of the OSL adhesive preparation process involved determining the oxidant level for high sucrose conversion to aldehyde (13 % based on sucrose), the mass ratio of OS to L (0.8), and hot-pressing temperature (200 °C). Notably, the shear strength of 3-plywood bonded with the developed adhesive (1.04 MPa) increased to 1.42 MPa after being immersed in hot water at 63 ± 3 °C for 3 h. Additionally, the plywood specimens exhibited excellent performance after soaking in boiling water for 3 h, resulting in a shear strength of 1.03 MPa. Chemical analysis using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed an addition reaction between L and OS, forming a dense network structure, effectively enhanceing the water resistance of OSL adhesives. Furthermore, compared with lignin-formaldehyde resin adhesive (LF), the OSL adhesive exhibited superior wet shear strength. This study offered an innovative approach for developing lignin-based adhesives utilizing a biomass aldehyde (OS), as a promising substitute for formaldehyde in the wood industry. The findings indicated that this approach may advance lignin-based adhesives, ensuring resistance to strength deterioration under highly humid environmental conditions.

Physical and Combustion Properties of Binder-Assisted Hydrochar Pellets from Hydrothermal Carbonization of Tobacco Stem

Liang Miao,Lu Wenjie,Lei Ping,Wang Le,Wang Bing,Li Bin,Shen Yi,Zhang Ke

Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) combined with pelletization is an efficient upgrading process to convert biomass into energy-dense pellets. Binders usually serve an important role in the quality of biofuel pellets. Here, hydrochar was produced from tobacco stem through HTC, and was pelletized in the presence of various binders. The effect of four kinds of binders (K 2 CO 3 , CaCO 3 , xanthan gum and carboxymethyl cellulose) on the basic fuel properties, mechanical strength, moisture adsorption and combustion characteristics was investigated. The results showed that K 2 CO 3 assisted pellet had decreased compressive strength, increased hygroscopicity and high combustion residues. The compressive strength of pellets increased with increasing amount CaCO 3 binder probably due to the hardening effect of enhanced adhesion attraction forces between adjacent particles. Meanwhile, the CaCO 3 assisted pellet exhibited the lowest moisture uptake behavior. In addition, the introduction of organic binders led to improved mechanical strength, especially for xanthan binder, which could be ascribed to the formation of solid bridges and enhancement of adhesion forces between particles. TGA results suggested that the binder-assisted pellets exhibited desirable combustion characteristics such as decreased ignition temperature and increased comprehensive combustibility index. Kinetic parameters of the combustion process of binder-assisted pellets were also determined by employing the model free isoconversional Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose method. This study demonstrated that HTC of tobacco stem combined with pelletization in the presence of appropriate binders provide an alternative for solid biofuel pellets production. Graphic abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of tobacco stem combined with pelletization in the presence of appropriate binders provide an alternative for solid biofuel pellets production.
