Elastic Polyurethane as Stress-Redistribution-Adhesive-Layer (SRAL) for Directly Integrated High-Energy-Density Flexible Batteries

Yige Xiong,Zhongjie Wang,Xiaohui Yan,Taibai Li,Siqi Jing,Tao Hu,Huixin Jin,Xuncheng Liu,Weibo Kong,Yonglin Huo,Xiang Ge

The low mechanical reliability and integration failure are key challenges hindering the commercialization of geometrically flexible batteries. This work proposes that the failure of directly integrating flexible batteries using traditional rigid adhesives is primarily due to the mismatch between the generated stress at the adhesive/substrate interface, and the maximum allowable stress. Accordingly, a stress redistribution adhesive layer (SRAL) strategy is conceived by using elastic adhesive to redistribute the generated stress. The function mechanism of the SRAL strategy is confirmed by theoretical finite element analysis. Experimentally, a polyurethane (PU) type elastic adhesive (with maximum strain of 1425%) is synthesized and used as the SRAL to integrate rigid cells on different flexible substrates to fabricate directly integrated flexible battery with robust output under various harsh environments, such as stretching, twisting, and even bending in water. The SRAL strategy is expected to be generally applicable in various flexible devices that involve the integration of rigid components onto flexible substrates.

Carbon Nitride Nanosheets as an Adhesive Layer for Stable Growth of Vertically-Ordered Mesoporous Silica Film on a Glassy Carbon Electrode and Their Application for CA15-3 Immunosensor

Jun Xing,Hongxin Wang,Fei Yan

Vertically ordered mesoporous silica films (VMSF) are a class of porous materials composed of ultrasmall pores and ultrathin perpendicular nanochannels, which are attractive in the areas of electroanalytical sensors and molecular separation. However, VMSF easily falls off from the carbonaceous electrodes and thereby impacts their broad applications. Herein, carbon nitride nanosheets (CNNS) were served as an adhesive layer for stable growth of VMSF on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE). CNNS bearing plentiful oxygen-containing groups can covalently bind with silanol groups of VMSF, effectively promoting the stability of VMSF on the GCE surface. Benefiting from numerous open nanopores of VMSF, modification of VMSF’s external surface with carbohydrate antigen 15-3 (CA15-3)-specific antibody allows the target-controlled transport of electrochemical probes through the internal silica nanochannels, yielding sensitive quantitative detection of CA15-3 with a broad detection range of 1 mU/mL to 1000 U/mL and a low limit of detection of 0.47 mU/mL. Furthermore, the proposed VMSF/CNNS/GCE immunosensor is capable of highly selective and accurate determination of CA15-3 in spiked serum samples, which offers a simple and effective electrochemical strategy for detection of various practical biomarkers in complicated biological specimens.

A dual-layer convex patch based on collagen-gelatin/alginate for corneal stroma defects repair and irregular penetrating injuries healing

Hailin Zhang,Baolei Huang,Wenjing Song,Wenfang Liu,Ye Tian,Zhuhao Tan,Xingqiang Zhu,Yu Niu,Wei Zhai,Anmin Wang,Lianghong Peng,Li Ren

Suture-free corneal repair strategy has become a focus in the field of corneal injury treatment due to its minimal invasiveness and high efficiency. This study introduces a dual-layer convex patch for suture-free repair of ocular trauma, comprising a thermosensitive gelatin/alginate adhesive layer and a convex collagen substrate layer. This design addresses critical limitations of conventional adhesives, particularly their difficulty in forming symmetric curvature during application and insufficient bonding strength under intraocular pressure fluctuations. In vitro studies demonstrated that the patch possessed superior transmittance (above 80 %) and high burst pressure (above 200 mmHg). This dual-layer convex patch can reduce surgical time by two-thirds compared to the suture group. In a lamellar keratoplasty model, the patch promoted epithelial healing, enhanced stroma regeneration, and inhibited the formation of stromal scars. For irregular large-sized corneal penetrating injuries, the patch group achieved rapid wound sealing, promoted epithelial healing, and showed more symmetrical corneal curvature and 90 % reduction in neovascularization compared to fibrin. The superior performance of the dual-layer convex patch makes it a promising alternative for the suture-free treatment of corneal trauma, achieving both corneal stroma defects repair and irregular penetrating injuries healing.

An all-nanofibrous Janus textile with directional perspiration for triboelectric nanogenerator and self-powered e-skin sensor

Ya Cheng,Jing Wang,Xiaofeng Lu,Ce Wang

Due to the increased demand for health monitoring and disease alarm, the self-powered epidermal electric sensors have attracted extensive attention, such as triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based electric skin (e-skin). However, the humidity accumulation at the interface between e-skin and skin will threaten the stability and reliability of the monitoring signals. Moisture absorptivity and perspiration are still great challenges that need to be addressed. Here, inspired by the internal structure of plants used to transport water, we fabricated an all-nanofiber Janus textile via a continuous electrospinning/electrospray technology, presenting a double gradient variations in the pore size and wettability along the thickness direction. Janus textile was constructed from the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN)/hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) fibrous membrane with small pores and hydrophilicity , conducting Ag nanowire (NW)layer, and polyurethane (TPU) nanofibrous membrane with large pores and hydrophobicity . By utilizing the wicking effect of external HPAN/BNNS layer, the sweat droplet could be transported from the interface between the skin and Janus textile to the external environment, meanwhile, the returned sweat will be blocked by interior TPU layer to keep the dry state of the skin. Therefore, the directional moisture transportation was realized. As the near-skin side, TPU was used as the other triboelectric layer, the optimal triboelectrification output reached 78.10 V, 0.16 μA, and 3.31 W m −2 . Moreover, the damped Janus textile also exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 30 V, a short-circuit current of 0.051 μA, and a power density of 0.14 W m −2 . With the assistance of an adhesive layer , Janus textile e-skin could easily adhere to the skin surface, generating stable movement and physiological sensing signals. In short, this work presents a noval way to construct Janus e-skin patch with directional sweating and breathability for monitoring long-term real-physiological signals.
