A New Strategy for the Preparation of High-Strength Hydrophobic Aldehyde-Free Starch Adhesive

Hangqi Zhao,Wenrui Yao,Guoying Liu,Kang Chen,Mengyao Liu,Ce Sun,Haiyan Tan,Jun Shen,Yanhua Zhang

Starch adhesives are often used in the plywood sector. They are sustainable, formaldehyde-free, and biodegradable. However, the problems of poor gluing strength and hydrophobicity need to be overcome. In this study, natural starch was oxidized by sodium persulfate to obtain oxidized starch. Oxidized starch adhesive (SSA-15%) was crosslinked with PVA. The results show that the dry and wet shear strength of the prepared oxidized starch adhesive (SSA-15%) can reach 2.95 MPa and 1.31 MPa, which is 163% and 120% higher than that of the natural starch adhesive. Sodium persulfate causes the large number of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups in starch to oxidize directly to carboxyl groups, improving the hydrophobicity of starch. The hydroxyl group present in oxidized starch interacts with the secondary hydroxyl group in PVA to form a hydrogen bond. This interaction enhances the adhesive bonding performance, resulting in improved mechanical properties and increased bonding strength of the final products, while also contributing to the formation of a more robust network structure. The study showed that the oxidized adhesive has good hydrophobicity and storage thermal stability. It is a simple and green biomass wood adhesive, which provides theoretical support for the promotion and application of aldehyde-free adhesives.

Ti/Cr(III) conversion coating on aluminium foil for lithium-ion battery package

Songnan Wang,Shiai Xu

Trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) was added into a titanium (Ti)-based solution in this study to prepare Ti/Cr(III) conversion coatings on the aluminium (Al) foil for lithium-ion battery package. Their surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The corrosion resistance and the adhesive strength between Al foil and hot melt adhesive (modified polypropylene film) were determined. The results reveal that the Ti/Cr(III) conversion coating is mainly composed of Al2O3, TiO2, Cr(OH)3 and Cr2O3, and possesses the best anticorrosive performance with a corrosion current density of 1.05 µA cm−2, which is one order of magnitude lower than pure Al foil. The adhesive strength between Ti/Cr(III)-treated Al foil and the adhesive is 14.3 N/15 mm with an increase of 250% compared with the pure Al foil, which meets the industry standard (12 N/15 mm).

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal liquefaction of lignin for the preparation of phenolic formaldehyde adhesive

Yanming Li,Bingzheng Li,Fangli Du,Yong Wang,Lixia Pan,Dong Chen

This study aimed to produce phenolic formaldehyde (PF) adhesives using the liquefaction product of bagasse lignin (LPBL) as a partial substitute for petroleum-based phenol. Lignin was extracted from bagasse using 93% acetic acid solution and was rapidly degraded in hot-compressed water by microwave heating using oxalic acid as catalyst. The liquefaction yield reached 78.69% under the optimal reaction condition. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis showed that the main chemical compounds of the liquefaction product included mono-substituted and bis-substituted phenols, such as 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and so on. The LPBL was employed to replace a portion of phenol at varying ratios from 0 to 20 wt % in the preparation of PF adhesives. The molecular weight, viscosity, and adhesive strength of LPBL-PF adhesives were found to be lower than those of pure PF adhesives. With the phenol replaced by LPBL up to 20%, the viscosity and adhesive strength of the resin were 4.046 Pa s and 1.017 MPa, respectively. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Bio-based hot-melt adhesive from xylan

Lv Ziwen,Yan Xueqing,Jia Siyu,Pan Jing,Hao Xiang,Chen Gegu,Lü Baozhong,Rao Jun,Peng Feng

Adhesives are ubiquitous in industries and daily life. However, conventional fossil-derived adhesives pose substantial health and environmental risks during manufacturing and utilization. The development of nontoxic high-performance adhesives from renewable feedstocks is therefore highly desired but remains technically challenging. Here we report a high-performing hot-melt adhesive—glue that is applied in a hot molten state—derived from a byproduct of the pulp industry, xylan, a type of hemicellulose. Under optimal conditions, the lap-shear strength between wood chips can reach approximately 30 MPa, surpassing that of classic epoxy resins and far exceeding that of a commercial hot-melt adhesive (ethylene vinyl acetate). Furthermore, the xylan hot-melt adhesive exhibits excellent reusability for multiple applications, retaining more than 100% of its original adhesion strength even after ten reuse cycles. Toxicity tests show good biocompatibility for xylan hot-melt adhesive. Overall, this work provides useful insights into the design of high-performance, reusable, bio-based adhesives for enhanced sustainability.

Quaternization-butyrylation to improve the viscosity stability, adhesion to fibers, film properties and desizability of starch for warp sizing

Wei Li,Xuedong Cheng,Yingfeng Wang,Zhenzhen Xu,Huizhen Ke

The influence of the quaternization and butyrylation on the sizing properties of biological starch macromolecule was evaluated for acquiring a new starch bio-based size [quaternized-butyrylated starch (QBS)]. The sizing properties of granular QBS samples were investigated in comparison with acid-thinned starch (ATS) and quaternized starch (QS). The QBS samples with a DS range of 0.029–0.0779 exhibited bonding strengths of 17.0–18.3 cN/tex to cotton fibers [15.5 cN/tex (ATS, DS = 0) and 16.6 cN/tex (QS, DS = 0.0240)] and 31.0–34.3 cN/tex to polyester fibers [28.0 cN/tex (ATS) and 30.1 cN/tex (QS)], and their films showed breaking elongations of 2.99–3.51% [2.59% (ATS) and 2.81% (QS)] and tensile strengths of 36.5–32.1 MPa [38.1 MPa (ATS) and 37.3 MPa (QS)]. Compared with QS, significantly increased bonding strengths as well as obviously decreased strengths and increased elongations of the films for the QBS samples with the total DS ≥ 0.0635 were exhibited. As increasing the modification levels from 0.029 to 0.0779, QBS presented paste stabilities from 90.4% to 85.7% which met with the requirement in warp sizing, and displayed higher desizing efficiencies (93.2–93.8%) than ATS (91.5%) and QS (90.2%). Based on these results, the amphiphilic quaternization-butyrylation was a good means for starch to acquire good sizing properties.

Recyclable, high adhesive strength small molecule rosin-based epoxy resin with AIE properties

Qian Wu,Peng Yang,Zhijun Ke,Hanwen Wang,Zehua Zhang,Boyi Zhang,Shenglin Li,Xiaoping Rao

The utilize of epoxy resins always necessitates the aid of petroleum-based curing agents to facilitate cross-linking and engender an irreversible tridimensional network structure. However, this characteristic, in turn, imposes the constraint of recyclability in their applications and hinders sustainable development. Creating a durable and repeatedly useable epoxy resin adhesive that can withstand mild bonding conditions lingers a significant challenge. In this work, a novel rosin-based epoxy resin (HAR-EP x ) was successfully prepared from hydrogenated acrylic rosin (HAR) and epoxy resin (EP x ) based on the structure of the hydrogenated phenanthrene ring with large steric hindrance and low cross-linking density. The HAR-EP x prepared in this study exhibits several remarkable properties, such as outstanding heat resistance (T d  = 354 °C), exceptional UV–visible light transmittance. HAR-EP x can be applied to adhesives without curing agents, and was characterized by mild bonding conditions (85 °C, 1.5 min), high mechanical properties (adhesion strength up to 4.306 MPa), and excellent reusability that retains over 80 % bonding strength even after undergoing 6 cycles. Moreover, it exhibits an intriguing characteristic, that is, it emits intrinsic cyan-green fluorescence when subjected to UV excitation, attributed to aggregation-induced emission (AIE).

A soft polyurethane foam adhesive with ultra-high and stable adhesion based on chemical coupling and mechanical interlocking

Shengping Dai,Jingping Yao,Longhua Zeng,Jinlong Shuai,Yan Zhong,Hongmei Chen,Cheng Liu,Wentong Chen,Yan Sui

High bonding strength and adhesion stability performance adhesives are essential for many fields, including electronic packaging, and interface bonding, etc. However, ultra-high and stable adhesion imposes higher requirements on the structure and properties of soft adhesives. Herein, A ultra-high adhesion, adhesion stability performance soft adhesive was developed by soft polyurethane foam. PuFA x (polyurethane foam adhesive) demonstrated outstanding flexibility (maximum compressive strength of 62.86 kPa), and ultra-high adhesion strength (up to 81.42 MPa for Cu). The gas generated by the physical foaming of PuFA x serves as an internal driving force, facilitating the formation of a mechanical interlocking structure between the polyurethane chains and the substrates. Thus, it forms a synergistic effect with chemical coupling, further enhancing the bonding strength. In terms of environmental adaptability, PuFA x exhibited excellent solvent-resistant adhesion stability performance under harsh conditions, including exposure to solvents such as DMSO, CH 2 Cl 2 , C 2 H 5 OH, HCl, NaOH, NaCl, and H 2 O. Furthermore, PuFA x demonstrated outstanding stable adhesion properties even in high-temperature aqueous solutions with a temperature as high as 100 °C and throughout a prolonged aging process that can extend up to 12 months. The design strategy of PuFA x provided a new way to develop an outstanding soft adhesive candidate with ultra-high and stable adhesion.

Effect of double bond position and density on properties of UV-induced bio-based polyurethane adhesion-reducing adhesives

Meng Li,Fengmei Ren,Haihong Ma,Weibing Xu,Zhengfa Zhou

In this paper, hydroxyl terminated copolyesters with different double bond position and density were prepared from bio-based dibasic acids. Bio-based unsaturated polyesters with -C=CH 2 in side (MPIA), -CH=CH- in main chain (MPFA), and with -C=CH 2 in side and -CH=CH- in main chain together (BDIA) were synthesized by using itaconic acid, fumaric acid, cis -2-butene-1,4-diol, and 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol as raw materials. The number molecular weight of MPIA, MPFA and BDIA was controlled almost the same. UV-induced bio-based polyurethane adhesion-reducing adhesives (BPURA) was prepared by bio-based unsaturated polyester, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), chain extender and photoinitiator. BPURA produced by MPIA, MPFA and BDIA were named BPURA-1, BPURA-2 and BPURA-3, respectively. The 180 0 peel strength before and after UV irradiation of BPURA-1 was 22.07 and 0.17 N/25 mm, while that of BPURA-2 was 8.56 and 0.34 N/25 mm, respectively. It could be found that the contribution of 180 0 peel strength of -C=CH 2 in side (BPURA-1) was greater than that of -CH=CH- in the main chain (BPURA-2). SEM and 3D laser measurement microscope showed that BPURA-3 had the highest roughness after UV irradiation, which is conducive to the viscosity reduction effect of the adhesive. The 180 0 peel strength before and after UV irradiation of BPURA-3 was 21.22 and 0.11 N/25 mm, respectively, which meets the bond strength standard of temporary bonding adhesive during wafer processing.

Fully recyclable multifunctional adhesive with high durability, transparency, flame retardancy, and harsh-environment resistance

Zi-Hao Wang,Bo-Wen Liu,Fu-Rong Zeng,Xin-Cen Lin,Jia-Yan Zhang,Xiu-Li Wang,Yu-Zhong Wang,Hai-Bo Zhao

Recyclable/reversible adhesives have attracted growing attention for sustainability and intelligence but suffer from low adhesion strength and poor durability in complex conditions. Here, we demonstrate an aromatic siloxane adhesive that exploits stimuli-responsive reversible assembly driven by π-π stacking, allowing for elimination and activation of interfacial interactions via infiltration-volatilization of ethanol. The robust cohesive energy from water-insensitive siloxane assembly enables durable strong adhesion (3.5 MPa shear strength on glasses) on diverse surfaces. Long-term adhesion performances are realized in underwater, salt, and acid/alkali solutions (pH 1-14) and at low/high temperatures (−10-90°C). With reversible assembly/disassembly, the adhesive is closed-loop recycled (~100%) and reused over 100 times without adhesion loss. Furthermore, the adhesive has unique combinations of high transparency (~98% in the visible light region of 400-800 nm) and flame retardancy. The experiments and theoretical calculations reveal the corresponding mechanism at the molecular level. This π-π stacking–driven siloxane assembly strategy opens up an avenue for high-performance adhesives with circular life and multifunctional integration.

Novel epoxy adhesives based on conductive micron-sized silver flowers

Yanhong Ji,Peng Miao,Ruonan Zhang,Quan Li,Yifan Zha,Fengying Dai,Xi Du,Benqiao He,Shaoyun Fu

Low silver contents are desirable for electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) due to the high cost of silver. In the present work, micro-sized flower-like silver particles (MFSPs) with long and thin petals are prepared by a novel, green, and facile chemical reduction method in an aqueous solution. The effects of reactant mass ratio and reactant concentration are investigated to control the morphology and size of MFSPs. Three kinds of MFSPs with different sizes are filled into an epoxy resin to prepare novel ECA. Due to the easily formed conductive paths by such morphological silver particles, the as-prepared MFSP/epoxy composite adhesive has a low percolation threshold, a high conductivity, and high adhesion strength at a very low silver content. When considering the optimal combination of low electrical resistance and high adhesion strength, the MFSP obtained at the 1.5:1 ratio of ascorbic acid to silver nitrate is promising for preparing the ECA with a low Ag content of 30 wt% which is the lowest content for ECAs compared with the literature. The synthesis process of MFSPs has the advantages of mild condition, simple process, and environmental friendship. This study provides a new way to prepare highly conductive Ag/epoxy adhesives with low silver contents.

Enhancement of the adhesion strength of water-based ink binder based on waterborne polyurethane

Linhe Zhao,Chengyu Hong,Chuanhao Wang,Jiawei Li,Haiwen Ren,Chao Zhou

Series of Waterborne Polyurethanes (WPUs) were synthesized by molecular structure design, using sodium 2-((2-aminoethyl) amino) ethanesulfonate (AAS) as the post-chain extender, and selecting poly-1,4-butanediol adipate (PBA) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as the soft segment and hard segment, respectively. The effects of changes in PBA molecular weight and AAS content on the properties of WPUs were investigated through analysis of adhesion, mechanical properties , and thermal properties. The result showed that the T-peel strength , shear strength , and adhesion of the film reached 7.75 ± 0.48 N/mm, 1.81 ± 0.08 MPa, and 1.45 ± 0.11 MPa, respectively, due to the higher hydrogen bond density in the molecular structure when the Mn of PBA was 2000 g/mol. Based on the selection, the introduction of sulfamate increased the urea bond content of the system, further increasing the intramolecular hydrogen bond density. When the content of AAS was 1.0 wt%, the T-peel strength, shear strength, and adhesion of the film were increased to the highest values of 10.63 ± 0.30 N/mm, 2.08 ± 0.09 MPa, and 2.41 ± 0.08 MPa, respectively. Therefore, WPU has a wide range of applications in the field of water-based ink binders due to its high adhesive strength.

Poly(acrylic acid)-grafted cellulose nanocrystal reinforced supramolecular adhesives: Ultrahigh strength, humidity resistance, and pH-controlled recyclability

Liying Zhang,Yihan Sun,Shasha Huang,Hongze Xu,Zejun Zhang,Min Jiang,Boxiao Li,Lu Zong,Shuxue Wang,Jianming Zhang

Bio-based adhesives have drawn growing attention due to the environmental and ecological issues posed by petroleum-based adhesives. However, their practical applications remain constrained by the limited adhesion strength and insufficient humidity intolerance. Herein, we have developed a bio-based adhesive using poly(acrylic acid)-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-PAA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) through the construction of highly dense non-covalent supramolecular networks. The abundance of active groups and improved cohesion endow the PVA/CNC-PAA adhesive excellent adhesion to diverse substrates, with a strength exceeding 7.52 MPa for ceramics. The rigid network structure and hydrophilicity of CNC-PAA markedly improve the adhesive's stability and humidity resistance, enabling it to retain 75 % of its maximum adhesion strength even at 100 % relative humidity. Furthermore, the high density of hydrogen bonding and structured water allow the adhesive to maintain excellent adhesion at −196 °C. By modulating the hydrogen bonding via pH adjustment, this adhesive also exhibits on-demand adhesion-dispergation and recyclability. In addition, its bio-mass framework renders the adhesive biodegradable character. This work provides a novel approach for developing bio-based adhesives with high adhesion strength, humidity-resistance, and on-demand debonding properties, paving the way for sustainable adhesives in packaging, labeling, cryogenic, and other applications.
