Exploring the synergistic effects and mechanistic insights of ionic and polyionic liquid combinations as shale inhibitors

Jia-Jun Dai,Kai-He Lv,Jin-Sheng Sun,Han Jia,Xian-Bin Huang,Jian Li

A B S T R A C T Ionic liquids (ILs), recognized for their negligible vapor pressure, thermal stability, and structural tailorability, offer targeted inhibition of clay expansion. Compared to ILs, polyionic liquids (PILs) possess stronger mechanical properties and adsorption capabilities, showing even greater potential in inhibiting clay swelling. In this work, we synthesized and characterized an imidazole-based ionic liquid (IL-NH 2 ), a polyionic liquid (PIL-ABHIm), and a PIL/IL combination. Their inhibitory performance was rigorously evaluated under simulated drilling conditions through immersion tests, linear swelling tests, among others. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying their interaction with clay minerals were elucidated through contact angle measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Zeta potential analysis, and molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) analysis. This work demonstrates that IL-NH 2 inhibits osmotic hydration by altering the interlayer structure of the clay, while PIL-ABHIm reduces surface hydration by forming a hydrophobic barrier on the clay surface. PIL/IL combines both mechanisms, significantly enhancing the stability of clay through the dual mechanisms of cation exchange and hydrophobic barriers. These findings reveal an innovative mechanism by which PIL/IL combination inhibits clay hydration and swelling, providing a scientific foundation for their application in drilling fluids.

Dual-functionality of CO2-responsive ionic liquids for CO2 storage: Fatty acid particles re-precipitation and clay swelling inhibition

Xingyu Lin,Hongsheng Lu,Ruoxin Zhang,Yingjiang Chen,Baiwen Huang

Gas channeling during CO 2 flooding presents a significant challenge to the effective underground storage of CO 2 . This study introduces a novel gas channel blocking strategy using the phase transition properties of fatty acid based CO 2 -responsive ionic liquids (ILs). The ILs were synthesized from choline hydroxide (Ch) and high-melting-point fatty acids (FA), including myristic acid (C14) and palmitic acid (C16), named FA-Ch ILs. These ILs demonstrate phase transformation behavior after CO 2 injection, leading to the precipitation of FA as solid particles. The FA-Ch ILs aqueous solution exhibits low viscosity, ensuring excellent injectivity for oilfield applications. After CO 2 injection, the precipitated FA particles act as gas channeling plugging agents, while the protonated Ch ions effectively inhibit clay swelling to enhance oil recovery with a synergistic effect. Structural properties and interaction mechanisms of the FA-Ch system were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and molecular dynamics simulations. The particle size of the FA precipitates was regulated by adjusting FA-Ch concentration and CO 2 injection rate to make it suitable as a profile control agent. Furthermore, Ch + ions demonstrate clay swelling inhibition comparable to traditional inhibitors like KCl. This dual-functionality positions FA-Ch ILs as an innovative solution for addressing gas channeling and clay swelling in CO 2 flooding, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods.

Synthesis and characterization of natural rosin-modified silica nanocomposite and its green multifunctional applications for drilling fluid

Ming Lei,Jinsheng Sun,Haiyan Zhu,Weian Huang,Zhixiang Cai

The increasing energy demand and environmental pressure require the utilization of high-performance and eco-friendly drilling fluid materials for oil/gas exploration. Herein, a green nanocomposite involving the core structure of silica (SiO 2 ), the resin shell structure of rosin dehydroabietic acid (DHAA) derivative [poly(DHAA- co -styrene) (PDS)], and the crown structure of hydrophilic layer [crosslinked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid- co - N , N -dimethylacrylamide) (CAD)] was prepared through semi-continuous emulsion polymerization and utilized as a high-performance and multifunctional additive for drilling fluid. The optimal composition of core, shell and crown was determined to be 0.3: 10: 2 in mass, and the DHAA component accounted for 50 wt% in the shell structure and the molar ratio of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid and N , N -dimethylacrylamide in the crown was 3:7. The core-shell-crown nanocomposite (SiO 2 -PDS-CAD) exhibited a well-organized multi-layered nanostructure with an effective encapsulation of PDS on nano-SiO 2 and CAD on PDS, facilitating a uniform nano-dispersion of SiO 2 -PDS-CAD. The bulky copolymerized rosin-based segments coupled with nano-SiO 2 resulted in high thermal stability of SiO 2 -PDS-CAD and broadened the softening point of raw rosin from 87°C to 141°C. Meanwhile, the environmental assessments of acute toxicity and biodegradability showed that SiO 2 -PDS-CAD was nontoxic and readily biodegradable, and the higher incorporation of rosin components enabled SiO 2 -PDS-CAD more biodegradable in contrast to the non-biodegradability of the analog without rosin. Moreover, SiO 2 -PDS-CAD showed versatile functions in bentonite-based drilling fluid by maintaining high yield points, lowering fluid loss and enhancing nano-porous plugging capacity (100–400 nm), especially at elevated temperatures (140–180°C). A maximum increment of 1200 % on yield point occurred after aging 170°C, and the highest improvement of approximately 72 %-75 % on fluid loss occurred at 150–180°C. It also could effectively inhibit clay swelling and decrease the lubrication coefficient. The enhancement mechanism was revealed to be the core-shell-crown synergistic effects, in which the hydrophilic crown contributed to the dispersion stability of SiO 2 -PDS-CAD and affinity with bentonite clay, and the rigid bridging of core and flexible deformation of rosin shell strengthened the interparticle interactions. The study highlighted a novel strategy for preparing high-value-added rosin-based biomass material for green multifunctional applications in water-based drilling fluids.

In situ shale wettability regulation using hydrophobic ionic liquid functionalized nano-silica to enhance wellbore stability in deep well drilling

Zou He,Yang Yang,Yang Wu,Hongsheng Lu

Shale wellbore instability due to hydration significantly hinders the efficient extraction of clean shale gas resources, making the development of effective shale stabilizers for safe drilling in shale reservoirs an urgent priority. In this study, we proposed an innovative application of hydrophobic ionic liquids functionalized nano-SiO 2 (ILs@SiO 2 ) specifically designed to maximize hold wellbore strength and effectively inhibit shale hydration. The chemical composition and microstructure of ILs@SiO 2 were characterized, and their effects on wellbore stability were thoroughly investigated along with the underlying mechanisms. The shale stabilizer demonstrated significant clay swelling inhibition (9.5 %), as well as effective hydration and dispersion inhibition of shale cuttings at 150 °C (88.0 %), and a reduced spontaneous imbibition of shale (0.997 g). Particularly, ILs@SiO 2 maximized maintained wellbore strength (203.4 MPa) and minimized water invasion (5.5 mL). Mechanism analysis revealed that ILs@SiO 2 improved wellbore stability through electrostatic adsorption weakening osmotic hydration, physical plugging establishing a dense preventing water barrier, altering wettability decreasing rocks surface free energy, inhibiting surface hydration, and reversing the direction of capillary forces. This study offers new strategies and insights for constructing methods to plug shale nanopores and inhibit surface and osmotic hydration.
