The crude oil reserves of fractured-vuggy reservoirs are large, but most of them are heavy oil and ultraheavy oil reservoirs. They have the characteristics of high heavy metal ion concentration, high asphaltene content, high viscosity and density, and deep burial. They are difficult to exploit. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the viscosity of the heavy oil to improve crude oil recovery. In this paper, the use of a viscosity-reducing foamer is investigated. First, the optimal concentration screening, temperature resistance, salt resistance, aging resistance, viscosity-reducing ability, ability to reduce oil–water interfacial tension, and ability to reduce gas–liquid surface tension were evaluated for DXY-03 viscosity-reducing foamer and DXY-08 viscosity-reducing foamer. Then, an oil displacement experiment on the viscosity-reducing foam was carried out under different placement conditions by using a visual fractured-vuggy model. The experimental results showed that the DXY-08 viscosity-reducing foamer has better temperature resistance, salt resistance, viscosity-reducing ability, and ability to reduce gas–liquid interfacial tension than the DXY-03 viscosity-reducing foamer. Therefore, the DXY-08 viscosity-reducing foam was selected for visual oil displacement experiments. The results of the visual oil displacement experiments showed that the DXY-08 viscosity-reducing foamer has good flooding ability, can effectively use the remaining oil in the fractures and holes in the middle of a reservoir, can also block large-opening fractures, and can effectively use the remaining oil in small- and medium-sized fractures. In addition, a liquid phase and a gas phase are produced after the disproportionation of the viscosity-reducing foamer. The liquid phase can emulsify and reduce the viscosity of crude oil, and the gas phase replaces the oil remaining in the fracture hole at the top of the reservoir under the action of gravity, which greatly improves oil recovery.

This paper reports the synthesis of AEC-9Na and its effects as an emulsifier on viscosity reduction of heavy oils. Williamson reaction was employed to obtain the emulsifier and its thermal stability was evaluated. The results showed that AEC-9Na can withstand a temperature of 300 °C, the viscosity reduction rate can reach greater than 99%, and it has high stability to calcium and magnesium salts. The interfacial tension of AEC-9Na on heavy oil reached 10−1 level. Compared with the steam flooding, the flooding efficiency with the addition of 1.0% AEC-9Na was increased by 4.8%. The samples were examined microscopically and self-emulsification occurred.

China possesses abundant heavy oil resources, yet faces challenges such as high viscosity, underdeveloped production technologies, and elevated development cost. Although the in-situ catalytic viscosity-reduction technology can address certain technical, environmental, and cost problems during the extraction process, the catalysts often suffer from poor stability and low catalytic efficiency. In this study, a green and simple room-temperature stirring method was employed to synthesize a class of highly efficient and stable 2D MOF catalysts, which possess the capability to conduct in-situ catalytic pyrolysis of heavy oil and reduce the viscosity. Under the condition of 160 °C, a catalyst concentration of 0.5 wt%, and a hydrogen donor (tetralin) concentration of 2 wt%, the viscosity-reduction rate of Fe-MOF is as high as 89.09%, and it can decrease the asphaltene content by 8.42%. In addition, through the structural identification and analysis of crude oil asphaltenes, the causes for the high viscosity of heavy oil are explained at the molecular level. Through the analysis of catalytic products and molecular dynamics simulation, the catalytic mechanism is studied. It is discovered that Fe-MOF can interact with heavy oil macromolecules via coordination and pore-channel effects, facilitating their cracking and dispersal. Furthermore, synergistic interactions between Fe-MOF and the hydrogen donor facilitates hydrogenation reactions and enhances the viscosity-reducing effect. This study provides a novel strategy for boosting heavy oil recovery and underscores the potential of 2D MOFs in catalytic pyrolysis applications.

Catalytic aquathermolysis in situ upgrading and reducing the viscosity of heavy oil in the reservoir remarkably enhances the recovery and is considered as a promising technology. However, the low catalytic efficiency and inferior dispersity in both water and oil limit its applications. In the present work, spherical polymer brush nanocatalysts were synthesized, in which nano-TiO2 is the core and poly(vinyl imidazole) (PVI)-loading nickel cations are polymer brushes. The chemical characteristics, polymer-grafting content, nickel-loading content, and morphology of as-prepared catalysts were characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The polymerization degree of PVI was analyzed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectra. The effects of the nickel-loading content, catalytic conditions, and hydrogen donor on the viscosity of heavy oil were studied. The results show that the heavy oil is catalytically cracked by the synthesized catalysts, which leads to the reduction of oil viscosity. The viscosity reduction is enhanced by the increase of the nickel-loading content, catalytic temperature, dosage of catalyst, and hydrogen donor. The rheological behaviors in terms of flow curve, thixotropy, viscoelasticity, and time dependence of cracked oil were studied. To explore the cracking mechanism, the four compositions of heavy oil before and after aquathermolysis were compared. The extracted asphaltenes and resins were further analyzed by elemental analysis, 1H NMR spectra, and IR spectroscopy. The organic compounds in reacted water were characterized by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. It is found that the content of light saturates is much increased after aquathermolysis, along with the distinct decrease of resins. From the structure change of resins, such as the decrease of hydrogen/carbon and methylene/methyl ratios and increase of aromaticity and aromaticity condensation, the increased light saturates are due to the dissociation of alkyl side chains in resins. In addition, the aromaticity and aromaticity condensation in asphaltenes are found decreased, which is because of the fragmentation and depolymerization of large aromatics. Meanwhile, the loss of oxygen in both asphaltenes and resins is connected with the phenols found in the reacted water, indicating the breakage of the C–O bond and heteroaromatic ring-open reaction in both asphaltenes and resins during aquathermolysis.

The effect of the timing of adding 1 wt% decalin as a hydrogen donor on heavy oil visbreaking was studied. Experiments show that either premixing decalin with heavy oil or adding decalin during the reaction accelerates the formation of light distillates and improves the efficiency of viscosity reduction. Premixing with heavy oil is an appropriate way to add decalin. After 10 min of reaction at 400 ℃, the viscosity reduction rate of the product reaches 90% and the asphaltene content of the product is 1.8 wt% lower than that of the raw heavy oil. According to theoretical calculations, the active hydrogens of decalin preferentially saturate the aromatic C radicals that are critical for condensation . The equilibrium constant of the H-donation reaches the order of 10 5 , while the activation energy of the reaction is only about 26 kJ/mol. The thermal cracking of decalin itself releases active and small-sized radicals, which accelerate visbreaking by participating in the dealkylation network of heavy oil molecules.

To meet the demand for enhanced oil recovery in shale reservoirs and to improve the fluidity of shale oil while strengthening its imbibition effect, a multifunctional, thermally stable nanofluid agent, SDP-3, was synthesized using acrylamide (AM) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonicacid (AMPS) as the primary raw materials. A series of characterizations and tests were conducted to evaluate its interfacial properties, stability, viscosity reduction performance, wettability, and imbibition-driven oil recovery capabilities. Furthermore, the mechanisms by which SDP-3 enhances the recovery of shale oil were analyzed. The results demonstrated that a mass concentration of 2% SDP-3 could reduce the oil–water interfacial tension to 0.071 mN/m. When the concentration increased to 2.0%, the interfacial tension further decreased to 0.071 mN/m, at which point the viscosity reduction rate for shale oil reached 92.02%, and the imbibition recovery rate was 36.57%. Microscopic observations revealed that SDP-3 could disperse shale oil into fibrous and spherical forms, effectively detaching the adhering shale oil from minute pores. This nanofluid agent not only exhibits excellent compatibility and stability but also achieves an ideal oil recovery effect while significantly improving recovery rates, showcasing its immense application potential in oilfield development.

A series of oil-soluble quadripolymers (denoted as AOSVs) have been synthesized to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil. The quadripolymers were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy, GPC, and TGA to determine the structures and properties. By comparing the apparent viscosities of two different kinds of heavy oil before and after the addition of the quadripolymers, we found that the efficiency of the AOSVs for viscosity reduction was markedly elevated for almost the same molecular weight and mole ratio. Thermogravimetric tests and pumping transportation simulations showed that the AOSVs have good thermal stability up to 320 °C and strong shearing resistance. Furthermore, a heavy-component model and a copolymer model were built, and simulations of the interaction process were conducted. The results indicated that the copolymers changed the density of the crude oil by breaking down asphaltene and resin agglomerates to achieve a viscosity reduction.

Nanoparticle-assisted microwave heating of heavy oil has the advantages of fast temperature rise and high thermal efficiency. Compared with traditional heating methods, it can reduce viscosity in a shorter time. In addition, the heavy components in the heavy oil are cracked into light components at high temperatures (this high temperature cannot be reached by conventional heating methods). This process is irreversible and avoids the problem of viscosity recovery of heavy oil after the temperature is reduced. Through absorbing microwave heating experiments, study the effect of nanoparticles on the improvement of the ability of heavy oil to absorb waves and raise temperature; through the heavy oil upgrading experiment and the four-component analysis experiment, the effect of adding hydrogen donor to assist microwave on the viscosity reduction of heavy oil upgrading by nanoparticles was studied, and the problem of viscosity recovery was determined; Through the gravity drainage experiment, the mechanism of nanoparticle-assisted microwave to improve the recovery of heavy oil is studied, and the influence of water content, nanocatalyst, and microwave power on the production of drainage is analyzed. The results show that nanoparticles can improve the wave absorption and heating capacity of heavy oil, and adding 0.6 wt% of nanomagnetic iron oxide catalyst can increase the heating rate of heavy oil in microwave by 60.6%; nanoparticle-assisted microwave heating method can effectively upgrade heavy oil and reduce viscosity. The experimental conditions are 2 wt% tetralin mass concentration, 0.5 wt% nano-Fe3O4 particle mass concentration, microwave heating time 50-60 min, and microwave power 539 W. Under this experimental condition, the viscosity is reduced by 40%. This method has viscosity recovery problems, but final viscosity reduction effect is still very significant. Obtaining the mechanism of nanoparticle-assisted microwave to enhance oil recovery, one of which is that nanoparticles improve the wave absorption and heating capacity of heavy oil and increase the heating speed of heavy oil; the second is that the nanoparticles form local high temperature under the action of microwave, which catalyzes the hydrocracking reaction between the heavy components in the heavy oil and the hydrogen donor, upgrading and reducing the viscosity of the heavy oil, and accelerating the production of heavy oil.

The high viscosity of heavy oil makes it difficult to realize its economic value. Therefore, improving the fluidity of heavy oil can effectively improve the economic benefit of the development of heavy oil resources. Oil-soluble viscosity reducers can utilize functional groups in monomers to break up asphaltene aggregates to improve the flow of crude oil. Graphene can be used to insert and split asphaltene aggregates through sliding phenomena and π–π interaction with colloidal asphaltene, thereby improving the fluidity of heavy oil. In this study, a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was synthesized from lipophilic-modified graphene and a polymer viscosity reducer. The net viscosity reduction rate reached 80.0% at 400 ppm. Compared with a polymer viscosity reducer, the viscosity reduction effect of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was improved by about 7%. Structural characterization of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was characterized with infrared spectroscopy and a thermogravimetric test. The mechanism of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer splitting asphaltene aggregates was verified with scanning electron microscopy. This study provides a theoretical and practical basis for the research and development of a novel nanocomposite viscosity reducer.

In this paper, disk-like α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles were synthesized by one-step via an n-octyl alcohol-mediated self-assembly process and were subsequently used as the catalyst for the updating of heavy crude oil. The characterization results show that the diameter of the as-prepared α -Fe 2 O 3 disks is in the range of 150–200 nm and the nanoparticles have a hematite structure with [1 1 0] preferred orientation. The catalyst strongly acts on the asphaltene and causes its lower S content and N content, lower aromaticity and aromatic condensation, and higher branchiness index. Adding tetralin causes the increment of aromatics content, the decrease of resin, and more molecules containing aromatic moieties bearing 2 and 3 rings. The viscosity of the Shengli extra heavy oil reduced substantially from 161180 mPa∙s to 45882 mPa∙s (50 °C) through the combination of the α -Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and tetralin (a hydrogen donor).

Humic acids (HAs) are widely used as filtrate and viscosity reducers in drilling fluids. However, their practical utility is limited due to poor stability in salt resistance and high-temperature resistance. High-temperature coal pitch (CP) is a by-product from coal pyrolysis above 650 °C. The substance's molecular structure is characterized by a dense arrangement of aromatic hydrocarbon and alkyl substituents. This unique structure gives it unique chemical properties and excellent drilling performance, surpassing traditional humic acids in drilling operations. Potassium humate is prepared from CP (CP-HA-K) by thermal catalysis. A new type of high-quality humic acid temperature-resistant viscosity-reducer (Graft CP-HA-K polymer) is synthesized with CP-HA-K, hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile sodium salt (Na-HPAN), urea, formaldehyde, phenol and acrylamide (AAM) as raw materials. The experimental results demonstrate that the most favorable conditions for the catalytic preparation of CP-HA-K are 1 wt% catalyst dosage, 30 wt% KOH dosage, a reaction temperature of 250 °C, and a reaction time of 2 h, resulting in a maximum yield of CP-HA-K of 39.58%. The temperature resistance of the Graft CP-HA-K polymer is measured to be 177.39 °C, which is 55.39 °C higher than that of commercial HA-K. This is due to the abundant presence of amide, hydroxyl, and amine functional groups in the Graft CP-HA-K polymer, which increase the length of the carbon chains, enhance the electrostatic repulsion on the surface of solid particles. After being aged to 120 °C for a specified duration, the Graft CP-HA-K polymer demonstrates significantly higher viscosity reduction (42.12%) compared to commercial HA-K (C-HA-K). Furthermore, the Graft CP-HA-K polymer can tolerate a high salt concentration of 8000 mg·L − 1 , measured after the addition of optimum amount of 3 wt% Graft CP-HA-K polymer. The action mechanism of Graft CP-HA-K polymer on high-temperature drilling fluid is that the Graft CP-HA-K polymer can increase the repulsive force between solid particles and disrupt bentonite's reticulation structure. Overall, this research provides novelty insights into the synthesis of artificial humic acid materials and the development of temperature-resistant viscosity reducers, offering a new avenue for the utilization of CP resources.

Aquathermolysis is a pivotal process in the recovery of heavy oil. The key issue is that the high temperature required for the reaction needs to be further reduced to enhance energy efficiency. In this study, a free radical initiator was used to overcome this problem. The promoting effects of introducing di- tert -butyl peroxide (DTBP) into the aquathermolysis system of Shengli heavy oil in the temperature range of 150–310 °C were investigated. Oil samples and asphaltenes were characterized before and after the reaction, respectively. The results revealed that DTBP could enhance the reactivity of both cracking and condensation reactions . It exhibited excellent performance in upgrading heavy oil at 250 °C and 310 °C. Compared with the experiment without DTBP, the relative viscosity reduction ratio increased by 9.64 %, while the asphaltene and resin contents relatively decreased by 28.34 % and 6.78 % at 250 °C with only 0.2 wt% DTBP added. However, at 150 °C and 210 °C, the addition of DTBP resulted in condensation progression, which proved detrimental to the viscosity reduction of heavy oil. Through an in-depth analysis of the hydrogen supply capacity of hydrogen donors and the structure changes of asphaltenes, the possible reaction mechanism of DTBP was discussed. Finally, these findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the performance of DTBP and cast a new insight into the aquathermolysis of heavy oil.
