In this study, we evaluated bioinspired adhesive primers for durable adhesion between dentin and composite resins. N-3,4-Dihydroxyphenethyl methacrylamide (DMA) primer monomer (small bifunctional group molecules containing catechol and acrylic groups at opposite ends) was prepared to mimic the interaction between the catechol group and the mineral interface of marine mussels. The shear bonding strength, microleakage, degree of conversion, contact angle, and compatibility were tested. The shear bond strength was significantly improved, and microleakage was diminished after the application of the DMA primer. However, the degree of conversion was decreased. The wettability of the dentin was enhanced, and the DMA primer showed no negative influence on cell proliferation. The results of this study showed the possibility of using DMA primers in clinical practice. This may provide a new strategy for improving adhesion durability.

Coupling agents are widely used in order to improve the properties of electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs). The effects of different coupling agents on the characteristics of epoxy-based ECAs were investigated in terms of thermal, rheological, electrical and mechanical properties. Results showed that the ECAs had favourable flow, adhesion and good conductivity. In particular, the ECAs filled with Ag flakes treated with the silane coupling agent 3-aminpropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) exhibited the lowest electrical resistivity (5.22 × 10 −4 Ω cm) and the highest shear strength (20.32 MPa) among the ECAs. Besides, it had the minimum viscosity 154 Pa s at 5 rpm/25 °C. It was also found that the adding of coupling agents had different effects on the aging electrical and shear strength of the ECAs. According to this study, the use of KH-550 had a significant electrical conductivity improvement and shear strength increase before and after aging. In addition, a strong adhesion/bonding between the conductive fillers and the resin matrix was revealed by scanning electron microscopy studies.

As a group of environmentally friendly adhesives, polyurethane hot-melt adhesives (HMAs) are used widely. However, existing thermoplastic (TPU) and thermoset (PUR) polyurethane HMAs have certain shortcomings. The adhesion strength and solvent resistance of TPU-HMAs are relatively poor owing to their linear structure. PUR-HMAs are non-reworkable and unrecyclable with low initial adhesion strength. These features greatly limit their applications. Herein, we used reversible oxime–carbamate bonds to build a dynamically crosslinked polyurethane HMA (DPU-HMA), which combines the advantages of TPU-HMAs and PUR-HMAs. Lap shear tests of stainless steel showed that the DPU-HMA had initial (3.47 ± 0.93 MPa after 5 min curing) and ultimate (5.71 ± 0.72 MPa after 1 day curing) adhesion strengths that were much higher than those for the commercial adhesive 3M PUR-HMA (0.02 ± 0.01 MPa after 5 min curing; 4.07 ± 0.13 MPa after 14 days curing). The DPU-HMAs retained moderate lap shear strength in solvent (acetone), whereas TPU-HMAs were completely dissolved. The DPU-HMAs were effective in bonding multiple substrates including metal, plastic, wood, and composites. Furthermore, the DPU-HMAs possessed smart features, such as debonding on demand and self-healing owing to their dynamic network. We expect that this new type of adhesive will be useful for applications in electronics assembly, and the automotive, and aerospace fields. The molecular design strategy might also be applicable for other adhesive systems.

Phase change materials (PCMs) play a crucial role as thermal interface materials (TIMs) because of their excellent thermal storage capacity. The solid–liquid phase change materials (SLPCMs) are usually encapsulated in the form-stable supporting materials to avoid leakage. However, plasticity is needed to ensure tight adhesion with the thermal dissipation surface of TIMs, which challenges the SLPCMs encapsulation requirement. Herein, we designed an epoxy resin-based gel PCM by using magnolol bifunctional epoxy resin (DGEM) with crystallizable side chains and 1-(3-aminopropyl) imidazole (IM) as both the extender and curing agent. IM facilitates smart balancing of the chain extension and cross-linking structure to endow the TIMs with both form-stability and surface adhesion via controllable slight cross-linking. Its preparation process is facile, and the as-prepared epoxy resin gel is stable in service. A latent heat storage capacity of 73.8 J g–1 and bonding strengths of 2.9, 2.9, 1.6, and 1.4 MPa for wood, aluminum, glass, and steel are achieved, respectively. When the temperature rises above the melting point (Tm) of PCM, it shows excellent segment migration and surface adhesion in the gel state, which makes it easily adhere to the heat dissipation surface and fully fill the rough surface gap. Its reversible crystallization can store excessive heat energy and release latent heat so that the device temperature is maintained within a relatively safe range. In addition, it can be easily recovered from the bonding substrates once heated above the Tm. Its installation and recovery processes are as efficient as hot melt and pressure sensitive adhesives. This study is of great significance for the preparation and application of PCMs.

Statement of problem Phosphoric acid is commonly used in dentistry as an etchant but can result in excessive demineralization of dentin, a major contributor to the instability of dentin-bonded restorations. Nevertheless, research on the development of etchants that can reduce acid damage is sparse. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of polyvinylpyrrolidone-modified phosphoric acid on the dentin bonding of an etch-and-rinse adhesive. Material and methods Protective etchants were prepared by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone to 35% phosphoric acid aqueous solutions: the 3 concentrations were 0.5% (P0.5% group), 1% (P1% group), and 2% (P2% group) w/v. The treatment agent of the control group (C) was 35% phosphoric acid gel. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microhardness, microtensile bonding strength (µTBS), nanoleakage, and in situ zymography were used to evaluate the appearance of the protective etchant on dentin bonding. The results were analyzed with a 1-way ANOVA test (α=.05). Results SEM showed no obviously exposed collagen fiber in the P1% and P2% groups. FTIR showed less demineralization of the dentin surface, and microhardness was higher after treatment with the protective etchant ( P <.05). The µTBS of P1% (70 ±9.2 MPa) was the highest, and group C (44 ±5.8 MPa) was the lowest in all groups ( P <.05). Moreover, there was weaker MMP activity in the P1% and P2% groups ( P <.05). Conclusions This study demonstrated that the protective etchant effectively reduced demineralization, enhanced bond strength, and reduced nanoleakage and enzyme activity within the hybrid layer.

In the field of optical bonding, traditional optical adhesives typically contain toxic organic polymers and solvents, limiting their widespread application. Hence, there is an urgent need for environmentally friendly aqueous adhesives. While there have been efforts to develop green adhesives, few report their performances with optical substrates. The unique requirements for optical adhesives include: optically transparent; the refractive index match of the substrate; minimal stress during and after curing. This presents a challenge to ensure compatibility between green and optical. This study introduces a novel sol-gel adhesive derived from an Al 2 O 3 –P 2 O 5 -lactate system. This adhesive is biocompatible, uses water as the sole solvent. It exhibits exceptional optical clarity, with more than 99 % transparency in the visible light and near-infrared regions. Furthermore, it provides reliable bonding strength , particularly when bonded with sapphire crystal substrates, reaching a maximum of 5.96 MPa. Interfacial chemistry analysis reveals the critical role of acidic components (such as phosphoric and lactate groups) in adhesives accounted for the bonding mechanism. By increasing the molar ratio of phosphoric acid , the bonding strength of adhesive was significantly enhanced across various substrates. This sol-gel adhesive not only adheres to green chemistry principles but also shows promising potential for optical bonding applications.

This study presented the synthesis and characterization of polyester block polyamide hot melt adhesives (PPHMAs) with high adhesion strength and toughness. The PPHMAs demonstrated an adhesion strength of 11.04 MPa and toughness of 22.54 MJ·m −3 , making them suitable for various substrates such as aluminum , copper, and stainless steel. The polyamide segments synthesized from dimer acid and 2-methyl-1,5-diaminopentane exhibited characteristics of softness and high elongation. Using isophorone diamine as a reinforcing agent introduced a stable six-membered ring structure, which enhanced the polymer's rigidity and strength, thus meeting the requirements for polyamide segments to function as the hard segments in block polymers . A trace amount of Tris (2-aminoethyl) amine provided the cross-linking sites which are similar to those in neuronal structures. The polyester segments, which were synthesized from poly (propylene glycol) diglycidyl ether and sebacic acid, served as the soft segments in the block polymer and were connected to the hard segment via amide bonds. The addition of the polyester segments enhanced the non-covalent molecular interactions within PPHMAs, leading to dynamic crosslinking properties. The adhesive maintained stable adhesion even after six cycles, which showcased its durability. Furthermore, the PPHMAs exhibited notable chemical resistance. It retained over 60 % adhesion strength after exposure to some chemical solvents including artificial seawater , 5 % NaOH solution, 5 % HCl solution, and DMSO for 24 h. These findings offered a novel approach to enhancing the adhesion strength and toughness of conventional thermoplastic hot melt adhesives.

Adhesives are widely used in daily life. However, during their preparation or application, traditional adhesives easily release toxic gases, which adversely affect the human body and the environment. Herein, a physically crosslinked tannic acid (TA)-based adhesive is prepared by forming hydrogen bonding between cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), polyacrylamide (PAM), and TA. Different characteristics of the prepared adhesives, including morphology, water content, biocompatibility, curing time, and adhesion properties, were investigated. Lap shear strength of the adhesive depends on the water content and curing time, reaching a maximum at a curing time of 48 h. The addition of CNCs enhances the lap shear strength, with the adhesive sample with 6.0 g CNCs exhibiting a high lap shear strength of 5.5 MPa on wood, which is 34% higher than that of the PAM/TA adhesive. Moreover, TA-based adhesives have excellent biocompatibility. These CNC/PAM/TA adhesives have excellent potential for application in the furniture, construction, and building industries.

Objectives The study investigated the solid reactants of amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) nanoparticles with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) in ethanol-aqueous solution, and the effect of ACP-MDP suspension as a novel primer on dentin micro-tesnisl bond strengths (MTBS) prior to application of self-etch adhesives. Materials and methods The ACP nanoparticles were synthesized. The solid reactants of ACP nanoparticles with MDP ethanol-aqueous solution were analyzed by TEM , SEM, XRD and AFM . After the ACP-MDP complexes were attacked by alkaline, acidic and self-etch adhesive challenges, they were analyzed with TEM. The polished mid-coronal dentin surfaces of six third molars were treated with ACP-MDP suspension, 5% MDP solution or not (served as control), and thoroughly water-sprayed. The pretreated dentin surfaces were applied with a self-etch adhesive (Clearfil S3 Bond) and placed with a composite resin (Clearfil Majesty). After 24 h, the resin-bonded samples were cut into multiple beams before the MTBS tests were performed. The failure modes were determined by a stereo-microscopy. The pretreated dentin surfaces were analyzed by SEM. The resin-dentin interfaces were analyzed with TEM. Results The ACP nanoparticles in the MDP ethanol-aqueous solution at certain molar ratio of Ca:MDP (0.12:1) could self-assemble into ACP-MDP complexes consisting of nanolayering structures. The ACP-MDP self-assembly went from ACP nanoparticles, beaded structures, and twig-like structures to networks. The ACP-MDP complexes can be resistant to adhesive challenge, but not to alkaline and acidic challenges. ACP-MDP complexes possessed a similar modulus of elasticity to dentin, and were stable at least for 3 months. Furthermore, the dentin surfaces treated with ACP-MDP suspension could significantly increase the dentin MTBS when compared with control and those treated with 5% MDP solution ( P < 0.05). Conclusion The ACP-MDP suspension at certain molar ratio of Ca:MDP (0.12:1) could be self-assembled into ACP-MDP complexes consisting of nanolayering structures, and could be used as a novel primer to greatly improve the dentin bond strengths.

The utilization of bamboo resources can significantly alleviate the wood shortage and facilitate CO 2 neutralization. However, the adhesive bonding performance of bamboo is not ideal, which greatly limits its application. Therefore, the biggest challenge is to explore a simple and effective method to enhance the bonding between bamboo and adhesive. In this study, we synthesized three butyl acrylate-styrene (BS) emulsions with different monomer ratios and incorporated them into urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins to prepare butyl acrylate-styrene modified urea-formaldehyde (BUF) adhesives. Results show that BS emulsion not only prolongs the workability time of UF adhesives (95 s–108 s), but also reduces the free formaldehyde content (0.38%–0.26%). Specifically, BS emulsion with the highest hard/soft monomer ratio makes BUF adhesive the lowest activation energy, showing the accelerated curing reaction. Specifically, the prepared laminated bamboo-veneer lumber (LBVL) exhibits the best wet-bonding strength and meets the Chinese National Standard, suggesting that BS emulsion with a higher hard/soft monomer ratio can enhance bonding performance. Thus, this efficient method can not only enhance various adhesive properties, but also improves the bonding performance on LVBL, which can greatly ease the shortage of wood resources and speed up the development of the bamboo industry.

Designing sustainable natural biomass adhesives with high bonding performance (particularly cold-pressing bonding strength) while maintaining excellent coating, mildew resistance, and flame-retardant properties is important for developing formaldehyde-free wood adhesives. Inspired by the wet adhesion system of scallops, we developed a novel bionic soybean meal (SM) adhesive with excellent bonding strength. In this adhesive system, keratin (KT) acts as a source of disulfide bonds (S–S) contributing formation/exchange donor, while Fe 3+ ions formed dynamic coordination bonds with carboxyl groups and tannic acid, resulting in strong adhesion. The multiple crosslinking network system synergistically enhanced the adhesion, resulting in a cold-pressing bonding strength of 582.4 kPa, which is an improvement of 171.3 %. The dry and wet bonding strength was 3.19 MPa and 1.34 MPa, which was increased to 73.4 % and 97.1 % compared to the SM adhesive, respectively. Additionally, the adhesive exhibited desirable mildew resistance (under storage for 15 days) and superior flame resistance, which was attributed to the synergistic inhibition by the metal cations and phenolic hydroxyl groups. The design of this bionic system offers a novel approach for developing environmentally friendly wood adhesives.

Although Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) is a burgeoning environmental-friendly material, however, due to the water absorption capacity of NIPU, the wet bonding strength of NIPU was often not ideal when used as an adhesive in the field of wood-based panel. Amine terminated hyperbranched siloxane (HPSi), endows the material with excellent bonding properties, while combining the superiority of the rich and adjustable terminal groups of hyperbranched polymers as well as water proof properties of siloxanes. Therefore, the addition of HPSi during the synthesis of NIPU could enhance it's wet adhesive strength to a certain extent. In the study, the NIPU modified with HPSi (NIPU.Si) adhesives were synthesized from glycerol triglycidyl ether, CO 2, bio-based diamine Priamine 1074 extracted from vegetable oil, Diethylenetriamine(DETA) and Amine-terminated Hyperbranched Siloxane (HPSi) synthesized by (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane(KH550) and Trimethoxyphenylsilane(PTMS) in a relatively sustainable synthesis route to improve the wet bonding strength of NIPU. The synthetic NIPU.Si(5 %) adhesive exhibits a good wet bonding strength of 1.93 MPa, representing a 34.0 % growth compared to NIPU.Si(0 %). Additionally, the synthetized NIPU.Si(5 %) adhesive shows wide applicability to different substrates, good adaptability to extreme cold temperatures, good adaptability to high temperatures aging as well as solvent resistance due to strong cohesion and high-density hydrogen bonds formed at the interface of the substrate. This study reports a new method to enhance the bonding performance of NIPU through introducing HPSi with high-density hydrogen bonds, avoids using any hazardous chemical raw materials and solvents, meets the criteria of cleaner production, further expands the application of NIPU in wood-based panel, cleaner production and other industries fields.
