Effect of Heat Treatment under Different Atmospheres on the Bonding Properties and Mechanism of Ceramiziable Heat-Resistant Adhesive

Qingke Wang,Jiadong Tao,Huawei Shan,Tangyin Cui,Jie Ding,Jianghang Wang

In this study, a heat-resistant adhesive was prepared using molybdenum-phenolic (Mo-PF) resin as the matrix and TiB2particle as the ceramizable filler for bonding Al2O3ceramic substrates. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was used to characterize the chemical structure of the Mo-PF. Subsequently, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and shear strength testing were employed to investigate the effects of heat treatment in different atmospheres on the thermal stability and residual bonding properties of the adhesive. To further explore the bonding mechanism of the adhesive after heat treatment in different atmospheres, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength testing, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were utilized to analyze the microstructure, mechanical strength, and composition evolution of the adhesive at different temperatures. The bonding strength of Al2O3joints showed a trend of initially decreasing and then increasing after different temperature heat treatment in air, with the shear strength reaching a maximum value of 25.68 MPa after treatment at 1200 °C. And the bonding strength of Al2O3joints decreased slowly with the increase of temperature in nitrogen. In air, the ceramicization reaction at a high temperature enabled the mechanical strength of the adhesive to rise despite the continuous pyrolysis of the resin. However, the TiB2filler in nitrogen did not react, and the properties of the adhesive showed a decreasing tendency with the pyrolysis of the resin.

Preparation and properties of water-soluble-type sizing agents for carbon fibers

Heyi Ge,Shun Li,Huashi Liu,Dongzhi Wang,Juan Chen

A water-soluble epoxy resin was synthesized by the reaction between novolac epoxy resin (F-51) and diethanolamine. Then, the modified F-51 was mixed with poly(alkylene glycol allyl glycidyl ether) as a film former of a sizing agent. A series of water-soluble sizing agents for carbon fiber (CF) were prepared. The modified F-51 was analyzed by Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphology of the CF was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of the sizing agent on the handling characteristics were investigated by abrasion resistance, fluffs, and breakage and stiffness tests. The results show that the abrasion resistance of the sized CF increased by 114.5% and reached 2344 times and the mass of fabric hairiness decreased to 3.2 mg. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test indicated that the interfacial adhesion of the composite could be greatly improved. The ILSS of the sized CF composite could reach a maximum value of 42.40 MPa. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131 , 39843.

Microstructure and properties of carbon fiber sized with pickering emulsion based on graphene oxide sheets and its composite with epoxy resin

Cuicui Wang,Heyi Ge,Huashi Liu,Shuai Guo

The Graphene oxide (GO) sheets were used for preparing the epoxy resin Pickering emulsion. The particle size and the zeta potential of the Pickering emulsion were measured to evaluate its stability. The stable emulsion could be served as the film former of sizing agent for carbon fiber (CF). The effect of the Pickering emulsion stabilized by GO sheets on the properties of CF and the interfacial adhesion property of CF reinforced composite were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that there existed a layer of sizing agent film with GO sheets evenly on the CF surface. Abrasion resistance and stiffness values of CF were tested and the results indicated that the sized CF conformed to the requirement of CF handleability. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) test indicated that the interfacial adhesion of the composite could be greatly improved. The fracture surfaces of CF composites were examined by SEM after ILSS tests. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132 , 42285.

Synergistic Double Cross-Linked Dynamic Network of Epoxidized Natural Rubber/Glycinamide Modified Polyacrylic Acid for Silicon Anode in Lithium Ion Battery: High Peel Strength and Super Cycle Stability

Hongwei Pan,Zhengshuai Xu,Zhaoyang Wei,Xin Liu,Minghan Xu,Chengzhong Zong,Weijie Li,Guanglei Cui,Lan Cao,Qingfu Wang

Silicon (Si), a high-capacity lithium-ion battery anode material, has aroused wide attention. Its further practical application has been limited by its huge volume change during the cycle. To reduce this defect, the double cross-linked product of glycinamide hydrochloride modified poly(acrylic acid) (PAG) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was developed as a water-based binder to obtain sufficient elasticity and a sufficiently strong adhesive force. Due to the double cross-linked structures in the system, the binder was enabled to effectively disperse and transfer the stress generated by the volume expansion of the Si particles and keep the integrity of the electrode during the cycle, thus obtaining excellent cycle performance. When the current density was 1 A g–1, PE55 (PAG: ENR = 1:1 cross-linked polymer) electrode still achieved a specific capacity of 2322.2 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles of constant current charge and discharge, and PE55 binder exhibited excellent bonding properties (4.45 N) and mechanical properties (stress: 5.51 MPa, strain: 87.4%). The comparison of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) electrodes suggests that the introduction of elastic polymer and the construction of double cross-linked structures can increase the stability of Si anodes.

Bonding and fracture properties of SPI-CNTs/epoxy adhesive on SPI-CNTs deposited CFRP composites

Jiayu Li,Junjie Zhao,Lei Hao,Yichao Li

Adhesive bonding is frequently used to connect CFRP structures due to its lightweight, easy implementation and high production efficiency. However, the bonding performance of adhesive is far from satisfactory as dimension and complexity of CFRP structures increase. In this paper, a new bonding strategy for CFRP structures via introducing soy protein isolate modified carbon nanotubes (SPI-CNTs) both in the epoxy resin adhesive and on the bonding parts' surface is proposed. Results showed that SPI can effectively improve CNTs' dispersion on the two areas, notably enhancing the bonding performance of the adhesive. When 0.3 wt% SPI-CNTs was added in the adhesive, its adhesive shear strength increased to 12.76 MPa, which was 72 % higher than the unmodified CNTs/epoxy adhesive. Based on this concentration, the SPI-CNTs was deposited uniformly on the surface of the CFRP adherends via bath sonication and resulted in a maximum shear strength of 15.59 MPa, which was 22.2 % greater than the untreated ones. Based on the above condition, the Mode I fracture toughness G 1c and the Mixed-Mode I/II fracture toughness G c could reach a maximum of 0.31 and 0.44 N/mm respectively, which were 117 % and 97 % higher than the pure epoxy adhesive . The present work shows a new pathway for the effective bonding of CFRP structural components used in the aerospace industry.

The preparation and performance analysis of high-entropy phosphate high-temperature resistant adhesives

Chenchen Qi,Xiaojian Ji,Jingjing Li,Zhanming Hu,Xuemin Wei,Bo Xiao,Mingchao Wang

In response to the weak bonding effect caused by the difference in thermal expansion between aluminum phosphate adhesive and alumina, a series of high-entropy phosphate adhesives (8.9 ×10 −1 K −1 ) with high thermal expansion matching to alumina (9 ×10 −6 K −1 ) were developed and analyzed. The adhesive could cure at room temperature and evolve into a stable high-entropy ceramic structure during heat treatment. Among them, (La 0.2 Ce 0.2 Sm 0.2 Nd 0.2 Eu 0.2 )PO 4 adhesive showed the best bonding performance since the generation of high-entropy ceramic. Without adding other additives, it provided a bonding strength of 14.8 MPa for alumina, 74 times that of aluminum phosphate. The strength retention rate remained at 40 % after 20 thermal cycles from room temperature to 1500 °C. The adhesion mechanism relied on the combination of mechanical interlocking, chemical bond adhesion and electrostatic interactions, and reinforced by the four core effects of high-entropy structure. High-entropy adhesives showed great prospects in aerospace, electronics, medical, and other fields.

Preparation and performance of ceramizable heat-resistant organic adhesive for joining Al2O3 ceramics

Yan Qin,Zhilong Rao,Zhixiong Huang,Hui Zhang,Jinrong Jia,Fuzhong Wang

Ceramizable heat-resistant organic adhesive (CHA) was prepared by using preceramic polymer polysiloxane as matrix, TiB 2 ceramic powder and low melting point glass powder as additives. The curing mechanism, thermal stability properties, phase composition after pyrolysis , structural evolution of bonding layer and bonding mechanism of the adhesive were investigated by FTIR, TGA-DSC, XRD , SEM, FESEM and bonding strength tests. Results of bonding tests showed the maximum shear strength of the joints was 21   MPa when heat treatment at 1200   °C for 2   h in air. Polysiloxane resin acted as crosslinking adhesive at low temperatures and tended to convert to ceramic bonding layer at high temperatures, resulting from ceramization reaction with active fillers. The formation and growth of ceramic phase after heat treatment enhanced the thermal stability and bonding performance of the adhesive at high temperature.

Minglin Qin,Haijuan Kong,Kang Zhang,Cuiqing Teng,Muhuo Yu,Yaozu Liao

To improve interfacial adhesion between aramid fibers and vinyl epoxy resins, a series of hydroxyl and ethylene-functional aromatic polyamides ((ClPPTA)m-R′) with different chain segments were successfully synthesized via a one-pot low-temperature polycondensation. The hydroxyl and ethylene-functional aromatic polyamides were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), solid-state13C CP/MAS nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C CP/MAS NMR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WXRD). The contact angle of the hydroxyl and ethylene-functional aromatic polyamides films were measured. The hydroxyl and ethylene-functional aromatic polyamides were used as the sizing agents for aramid fiber/vinyl epoxy composites. The surface chemical composition and morphology of the unsized and sized fibers were identified using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The interfacial adhesion between aramid fibers and vinyl epoxy composites was investigated by the micro-debond tests. The results showed that the interfacial shear strength between the sized aramid fibers and vinyl epoxy composites was greatly improved. Keywords:aramid fibers;sizing agents;vinyl epoxy composites;adhesion properties

Lei Chen,Zhouyi Xiong,Hanguo Xiong,Zhenjiong Wang,Zia-ud Din,Asad Nawaz,Pengkai Wang,Chun Hu

The nano-TiO 2 was utilized to improve the bonding performance, structure stability and film-forming properties of renewable starch-based wood adhesive. The results showed that 4% nano-TiO 2 (nano-TiO 2 :starch, w;w) resulted in 6.5 MPa of shear strength and 6437 Pa.s of viscosity. The thermal stability was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Additionally, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and rheological results exhibited the enhancement of nano-TiO 2 on the pseudoplasticity and structure which determined the state and migration of water. Besides, the structural characterization of copolymer was analyzed via fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Furthermore, the film-forming property was evaluated by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The morphological structures of adhesive were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In conclusion, the 4% nano-TiO 2 (nano-TiO 2 :starch, w;w) can be employed to prepare starch-based wood adhesives with superior properties for wood application.

Synthesis and characterization of novel semiaromatic copolyamides bearing both polar hydroxyl and unsaturated allyl substituents

Wenbin Wang,Xiang Qi,Fei Zhang,Yingdan Zhu,Xinhua Wan

A series of novel semiaromatic (co)polyamides, poly(octylene terephthalamide)- ran -poly[octylene 2,5-bis(allyloxy)terephthalamide] (APA8T- x , x represents the molar fraction of allyloxy containing structure unit), were prepared via the interfacial polymerization of 1,8-diaminooctane, terephthaloyl chloride, and 2,5-bis(allyloxy)terephthaloyl chloride. The polymerization conditions were optimized in terms of the yields and the molecular weights of the resultant polymers. These polymers were converted to the target macromolecules, poly(octylene terephthalamide)- ran -poly[octylene (2,5-dihydroxy-3,6-diallyl)terephthalamide] (CRPA8T- x ), through solid state Claisen rearrangement reaction, as characterized by 1 H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies. While APA8T- x was only soluble in very limited solvents, the solubility of CRPA8T- x in polar solvents improved remarkably, especially for those with high counit content. Due to the polarity of hydroxyl group, CRPA8T- x showed an improved hydrophilicity than APA8T- x . The treatment of aramid fibers with CRPA8T- x , as sizing agents, enhanced obviously their interfacial adhesion toward epoxy resin. The fibers sized with 0.5 wt% CRPA8T-75 solution in the mixture of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and phenol (40:60, w/w) exhibited a maximum increase of 60% in interfacial shear strength than the naked fibers. The easy preparation and the facility for the further modification through the dual functional substituents may greatly widen the application of semiaromatic polyamides. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Co-depositing bio-inspired tannic acid-aminopropyltriethoxysilane coating onto carbon fiber for excellent interfacial adhesion of epoxy composites

Mengjie Zhang,Chunxia Cheng,Chunqi Guo,Lin Jin,Liu Liu,Ming Li,Lei Shang,Yu Liu,Yuhui Ao

The mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) are seriously affected by the poor interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and resin matrix . Therefore, it was necessary to modify the surface of CF, but this process also confronted the problems of environmental pollution and harsh conditions. Herein, tannic acid (TA) and aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) were co-depositing onto the surface of CF in aqueous solution by a mild and eco-friendly method to improve interfacial properties . Due to the unique adhesion properties of TA and its oxidation products can react with APTES, the products can be uniformly coated on the inert surface of CF. At the same time, the coating introduced a number of amino groups into the surface of the CF and promoted the chemical interaction between CF and epoxy matrix . The IFSS , transverse fiber bundle tensile (TFBT) and ILSS of composites after co-deposition were improved, corresponding to 71.3%, 58.5% and 59.9%, respectively. Hence, this work provided a new idea for the green and sustainable development of modified CF.

Effect of fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion properties on the low-velocity impact resistance of glass fiber reinforced nylon 6 composites

Shun Yang,Ying Wei,Hongfeng Yin,Dawei Li,Feibiao Xue

Interfacial adhesion properties are a key factor affecting the mechanical properties of composites. It is a very effective way to improve the low-velocity impact resistance of composites by improving the interfacial adhesion properties. To improve the fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion properties of GF/PA6 (glass-fiber/polyamide 6) composites, polyethyleneimine (PEI) and γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH550) were used to co-modify GF together in this study. The GF/PA6 composites with different modifications of glass-fiber (GF) were also prepared using a hot pressing process, and then their flexural strength, shear strength, pendulum impact strength, and low-speed impact resistance were investigated. Next, the relationship between fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of GF/PA6 composites was investigated by combining x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray computed tomography test results. The results showed that the GF-reinforced PA6 matrix composite with co-modified GF by PEI and KH550 (PEI-KH550-GF/PA6) had the best mechanical properties, with flexural, shear, and pendulum impact strengths of 660.7 MPa, 53.1 MPa, and 261.6 kJ/m 2 , respectively. Furthermore, the low-velocity impact resistance was measured in terms of stress peak, absorbed energy, residual stress, and damage extension, and the results showed that the low-speed impact resistance of PEI-KH550-GF/PA6 composites was also substantially improved that the F max increased from 7402.1 to 10414.0 N. Highlights Due to the poor surface activity of GF, in this experiment, GF was co-modified with PEI and KH550 to achieve better fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and successfully improve the mechanical properties of the composites; Different modification methods are used to improve the interfacial adhesion of the fiber/matrix interface. The relationship between the interface and impact strength of composites has been studied; The relationship between fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and internal cracking in composites was investigated using X-CT and SEM and other test results.
