Wide-range controllable stick-to-slip hydrogels by synergistic effects of wettability and surface morphology

Laishun Wu,Shuhang Deng,Jingjuan Lai,Li Wang,Guilong Yan,Chunxia Zhao,Dong Xiang,Hui Li,Bin Wang,Zhenyu Li,Hongwei Zhou,Yuanpeng Wu

Materials With the ability to swiftly transition into a lubricated state hold significant importance across various applications, including human-machine interfaces, crawling robots, and medical dressings. Achieving a rapid and reversible shift from high adhesion to low friction over a broad range has posed a considerable challenge, as most reversible transitions in adhesive hydrogels typically occur only at the microscopic level. In this study, this challenge has been addressed by leveraging the synergistic interplay between dynamic macroscopic contact and microscopic group changes to engineer a switchable adhesion-to-lubrication hydrogel (denoted as the PVA/PAA hydrogel). Upon the application of borax to the PVA/PAA hydrogels (denoted as the B-PVA/PAA hydrogel), alterations in surface morphology and hydrophilicity ensue due to the cross-linking of hydroxyl and boron atoms and the subsequent dissociation of carboxyl groups induced by borax. These transformations caused by synergistic effects give rise to changes in the adhesive and lubrication characteristics of the hydrogels. Consequently, the hydrogel can readily transition between an adhesive state (adhesion strength ∼ 26 kPa) and a lubrication state ( μ ∼ 0.028), driven by shifts in surface topography and hydrophilicity. This mechanism provides a versatile and efficient approach for the creation of a fast-switchable adhesive gel with stick-slip properties, offering promising prospects for a wide array of practical applications.

Adhesion switchable transition on bio-inspired Janus surface for multi-directional droplet manipulation

Konghua Yang,Shiliang Chen,Yibin Liu,Yunhong Liang,Zhihui Zhang,Chunbao Liu

Achieving precise and rapid droplets manipulation in versatile directions transport remains a considerable challenge, however adhesion switchable transitions deemed to be rather serviceable. Here, a double-sided microplate array (DMPA) with bio-inspired Janus surfaces, is proposed to fulfill adjustable adhesion through surface wettability switching and microplate dynamic deformation, thereby executing the droplet multi-dimensional manipulation in response to dynamic magnetic field. The triple-coupled bio-inspired Janus surfaces are newly designed with a convex hull and striped structure respectively, inspired by the respiratory ciliary motion and surface properties of lotus and rice leaves. Leveraging variation in superhydrophobicity and low adhesion of convex hull side on Janus surface, diverse droplet directional transports are achieved in plane, such as high-speed horizontal transport (120 mm/s and 500 µL), anti-gravitational climbing (inclined by 15°), and selective droplet orientation. The adhesion switchable transition of surface striped structure on other side is predominated by solid–liquid contact lines evolution resulting from microplate bending deformation, realizing droplet capture/release for long-distance multi-dimensional transport. Concurrently, a magnetic-responsive droplet switch is developed based on multi-directional droplet manipulation, demonstrating enormous potential for practical application.

Moisture-responsive ultralow-hysteresis polymer ionogels for adhesion-switchable strain sensing

Yichen Zhou,Xing Zhang,Ying Zheng,Junfeng Liu,Yongzhong Bao,Guorong Shan,Chengtao Yu,Pengju Pan

Adhesion-switchable ultralow-hysteresis polymer ionogels are highly demanded in soft electronics to avoid debonding damage and signal distortion, yet the design and fabrication of such ionogels are challenging. Herein, we propose a novel method to design switchable adhesive ionogels by using binary ionic solvents with two opposite-affinity ionic components. The obtained ionogels exhibit moisture-induced phase separation, facilitating switchable adhesion with a high detaching efficiency (>99%). Moreover, before and after phase separation, the viscoelastic behavior of the ionogels is maintained in the rubbery plateau region within common frequency ranges with ultralow mechanical hysteresis (∼3%) under large strain, enabling accurate and stable strain and pressure sensing. Accordingly, the ionogel films can be used as functional elements in a smart clamp to realize flytrap-like selective activation, based on high sensitivity to the vibration intensity from the targeted prey. This work may inspire future research on the development of advanced soft electronics.

Hydration-triggered adhesion switching for transfer printing of conductive patterns using carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibers films

Junsik Choi,Jinho Hyun

Complex 3D devices require a printing technique for curved geometries under mild conditions. Here, effective 3D transfer printing is achieved by simple water-assisted adhesion switching using a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) film. Patterns printed on the CNF film are transferred to target surfaces by simple hydration of the CNF film. As the CNF film gradually hydrates, the hydrogen bonding between the printed patterns and the film surface weakens. This reduction in adhesion allows the easy delamination of patterns from the CNF film and the spontaneous transfer to target surfaces such as polymers, ceramics, and metals, which have stronger adhesion than the hydrated CNF surface. This hydration-triggered process enables both high-fidelity printing on curved surfaces and functional integrity and easy repair of electrical devices, paving the way for advanced fabrication of flexible electronic circuits.

Precision-induced localized molten liquid metal stamps for damage-free transfer printing of ultrathin membranes and 3D objects

Shi Chuanqian,Jiang Jing,Li Chenglong,Chen Chenhong,Jian Wei,Song Jizhou

Transfer printing, a crucial technique for heterogeneous integration, has gained attention for enabling unconventional layouts and high-performance electronic systems. Elastomer stamps are typically used for transfer printing, where localized heating for elastomer stamp can effectively control the transfer process. A key challenge is the potential damage to ultrathin membranes from the contact force of elastic stamps, especially with fragile inorganic nanomembranes. Herein, we present a precision-induced localized molten technique that employs either laser-induced transient heating or hotplate-induced directional heating to precisely melt solid gallium (Ga). By leveraging the fluidity of localized molten Ga, which provides gentle contact force and exceptional conformal adaptability, this technique avoids damage to fragile thin films and improves operational reliability compared to fully liquefied Ga stamps. Furthermore, the phase transition of Ga provides a reversible adhesion with high adhesion switchability. Once solidified, the Ga stamp hardens and securely adheres to the micro/nano-membrane during the pick-up process. The solidified stamp also exhibits the capability to maneuver arbitrarily shaped objects by generating a substantial grip force through the interlocking effects. Such a robust, damage-free, simply operable protocol illustrates its promising capabilities in transfer printing diverse ultrathin membranes and objects on complex surfaces for developing high-performance unconventional electronics.
