The demand for highly-durable protective coatings for use in extreme environments is continually growing, however, poor durability and adhesion restricted their practical applications. Herein, we prepared a novel solution-processable graphene-based copolymer for fabricating highly-durable protective coatings. The random-structured copolymer GO- g -(PMMA- co -PMPS) was prepared by graphene-based initiator (GO- g -Cl) initiating methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). The copolymers rendered the coatings with high transmittance (~95%), high hydrophobicity (water contact angles = 113.8 ± 2.13°), and strong adhesion (1.26–1.38 MPa). Tetrahydrofuran (THF)-casted coating surface presented a higher Si content and greater surface roughness than that cast from dimethyl carbonate (DMC), yielding more hydrophobic coating than those cast from DMC. The coatings could be coated on different substrates (glass, aluminum, and sandstone); and besides, the structures and performance of the coatings remained unchanged, even exposing to acid/alkali, salt, and ultraviolet light irradiation. These high-performance properties make the GO-based copolymers ideal candidates for fabricating high-durability protective coatings.

Hydrophilic coatings, an effective strategy to achieve anti-fogging performance on substrates, still face the problem of poor endurability. In this work, a hydrophilic antifogging coating consisting of poly (2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid- co -butyl acrylate- co -dopamine methacrylamide) was constructed, which shows significant anti-fogging performance, notable abrasion resistance and excellent adhesion. The combination of strong interfacial adhesion and hydrophilic/hydrophobic structure is key to this approach, which avoids interfacial failure and swelling-induced wrinkles under typical fogging conditions. The adhesion strength is higher than most commercial glues and high-performance polymer adhesives in the literatures since the catechol groups endows the coating marvelous adhesion to the substrate. This study provides a promising avenue for the design and fabrication as well as practical application of anti-fogging coating with strong adhesion strength.

During the operation of deep-sea pipelines, the accumulation and deposition of hydrates are important reasons for pipeline blockage. The current main measure to solve the hydrate plugging problem is the addition of low-dose inhibitors (LDHIs), but it is not yet known whether the precipitation of wax crystals will affect their effectiveness. Therefore, in this study, the hydrate cohesive force within the wax-free/wax-containing system was directly measured by using a micromechanical force device (MMF) and the reasons for the change in cohesive force were analyzed from a morphological point of view. The results showed that glycine was effective in reducing the cohesion between hydrate particles in both wax-free/wax-containing systems and still exerted the effect of antiagglomeration agent (AA) at very low concentrations (as low as 0.10 wt %). Moreover, the optimum concentration of glycine was 0.50 wt %. At this concentration, the cohesive force decreased from 8.54 to 7.07 mN/m in the wax-free system, a decrease of about 17.2%, while the cohesive force decreased from 5.94 to 2.15 mN/m in the wax-containing system, a decrease of about 63.8%. By observation of the morphology of the hydrate particles, the presence of glycine was found to reduce the volume of the liquid bridge by changing the surface roughness and wettability of the particles, thereby reducing the cohesive force. And when wax was contained in the system, the wax further reduced the wettability by adsorbing on the surface of the hydrate particles. However, under certain AA conditions, the increase in wax concentration (from 0.1 to 0.3 wt %) resulted in the free water inside the hydrate being more likely to form liquid bridges with the surrounding particles, thus weakening the effect of AA. This work analyzes the effect on cohesive force in the simultaneous presence of LDHIs and wax from a morphological point of view, which is beneficial in providing more insights into securing safe hydrate flow management.

In this study, a facile and detailed strategy to fabricate superhydrophobic aluminum surfaces with controllable adhesion by femtosecond laser ablation is presented. The influences of key femtosecond laser processing parameters including the scanning speed, laser power and interval on the wetting properties of the laser-ablated surfaces are investigated. It is demonstrated that the adhesion between water and superhydrophobic surface can be effectively tuned from extremely low adhesion to high adhesion by adjusting laser processing parameters. At the same time, the mechanism is discussed for the changes of the wetting behaviors of the laser-ablated surfaces. These superhydrophobic surfaces with tunable adhesion have many potential applications, such as self-cleaning surface, oil–water separation, anti-icing surface and liquid transportation.

The adhesion force between methane hydrate particles and wall droplets is an important reference for studying the behavior of hydrate particles accumulating or detaching from the tube wall. In this work, a high pressure visualization microscopic force testing system was built to evaluate the effect of hydrate anti-agglomerants (AAs) in the methane gas phase. It was found that the hydrate adhesion force reached its lowest value at the QAs1 solution concentration of 0.2 wt% (CMC), and the adhesion force was 589.81 mN/m under 1 subcooling condition and 1123.63 mN/m under 10 subcooling condition. It was found that the mechanism of QAs1 in reducing adhesion force under lower levels of subcooling conditions is mainly to reduce the gas–water interfacial tension. The mechanism of action of QAs1 in reducing adhesion force under higher levels of subcooling conditions is mainly due to the steric hindrance effect of QAs1 molecules. The presence of QAs1 molecules on the droplet surface leads to the slowdown of tangential growth of hydrate film and the slowdown of thickening of hydrate film, resulting in a reduction in adhesion force. When the concentration of QAs1 solution is higher than the CMC, the steric hindrance effect of QAs1 molecules is no longer enhanced with the increase of QAs1 solution concentration, while the presence of micelles makes the hydrate easier to nucleate and makes the adhesion force gradually increase. These research data are useful to study the mechanism of action of quaternary ammonium salts as hydrate anti-agglomerants (AAs) and provide a basis for determining the optimal amount of additives for AAs used to prevent hydrate accumulation in natural gas pipelines, and for optimizing hydrate prevention solutions in deep-water gas wells.

The surface properties of non-porous areas (>90 %) of support membranes were often overlooked to influence the performance of nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, the role of the support membrane in interfacial polymerization (IP) during synthesis of NF membrane and consequently on its performance were quantitatively investigated from the perspective of adhesion force for the first time. The support membranes with considerable pore structures and different surface sulfonate (-SO 3 - ) contents were prepared from different concentrations of polyethersulfone/sulfonated polysulfone (PES/SPSf) solutions. The adhesion forces of different support membranes were measured by atomic force microscope (AFM). The IP process between piperazine (PIP) and trimethylbenzoyl chloride (TMC) and the obtained polyamide (PA) layer on the support membranes were monitored by Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The results indicated that the contents of sulfonic groups on the surface of the support membranes decreased as the casting-solution concentration increased (from 16 % to 28 %) due to a negative segregation phenomenon, which resulted in a decrease in the adhesion force (from 17.9 to 2.6 nN) between the support membranes and PIP monomers. The reduced adhesion force between the support membrane and PIP monomers led to an increase in the PA layer thickness (from 0.8 to 18 nm). Interestingly, the time to reach PA layer thickness equilibrium decreased (from 91 to 23 s). The obtained NF membranes (from PA@PES/SPSf 16 to PA@PES/SPSf 28 ) achieved the pure water permeance from 51.2 to 26.2 L m −2 h −1 ·bar −1 while the salt (Na 2 SO 4 ) rejection from 97.5 to 99.5 %, respectively, was noted. It was demonstrated that controlling the adhesion force between the support membranes and PIP monomers could effectively regulate the structure and the performance of NF membranes. This work would provide valuable insights for designing high-performance NF membranes in practical applications.

Although the effect of surface roughness on the floatability of a single mineral has been investigated extensively, a systematic study for the effect of surface roughness on the flotation separation of different minerals, e.g., flotation recovery, has never been dwelled. To fulfill this gap, in this study, the effect of surface roughness on the flotation separation of hematite from quartz was investigated with a series of experiments and detections. Micro-flotation experiments demonstrated that hematite particles with higher roughness resulted in higher recoveries for both hematite and quartz, but the improvement of hematite recovery was more significant, which promoted the flotation separation of hematite from quartz with a higher separation index (SI). Adhesion force measurements revealed that after interacting with 125 mg/L sodium oleate at pH 9, increasing nano-scaled roughness improved the hydrophobicity of hematite surface, and reduced the adhesion force of water droplet on hematite surface. Scanning Electron Microscope – Energy Dispersive Spectrometer observations confirmed that increasing nano-scaled roughness increased the number of fine quartz particles coating on hematite surface. Combined with the analysis of adhesion of water droplet and observation of fine particles coating on hematite surface, the effect of surface roughness on minerals flotation separation could be better understood.

Iron (Fe) plaques in coastal wetlands are widely recognized because of their strong adsorption affinity for natural particles, but their interaction behaviors and mechanisms with plastics remain unknown. Through laboratory incubation experiments, paired with multiple characterization methods and microbial analysis, this work focused on the characteristics of Fe plaques on low-density polyethylene plastic surfaces and their relationship with environmental factors in coastal wetlands (Mangrove and Spartina alterniflora soil). The results showed that iron plaques increased the adhesive force of the plastic surface from 65.25 to 300 nN and promoted the oxidation of the plastic surface. Fe plaque formation was stimulated by salinity , anaerobic conditions , natural organic matter, and a weak alkaline scenario (pH 8.0–8.3). The Fe content showed a stable positive correlation with heavy metals loading (i.e., As, Mn, Co, Cr, Pb, and Zn). Furthermore, we revealed that Fe plaque was positively regulated by Nitrospirae through 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis. Meanwhile, Verrucomicrobia and Kiritimatiellaeota . may act as depressants by consuming salt. This work illustrated that iron plaques could enhance the role of plastics in contaminant migration by altering their adsorption performance, providing new insights into plastic interface behavior and potential ecological effects in coastal wetlands.

Fine particle detachment and subsequent migration can lead to severe pore plugging and consequent permeability decline. Therefore, it is crucial to quantify the critical condition when fine particle detachment occurs. The frequently observed deviations or even contradictions between experimental results and theoretical predictions of fines detachment arise from an insufficient understanding of adhesion force that can be highly influenced by salinity and temperature. To clarify the intrinsic influence of salinity and temperature on fines detachment, adhesion forces between carboxyl microspheres and hydrophilic silica substrates in an aqueous medium were measured at various salinities and temperatures using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM-measured adhesion force decreases with increasing salinity or temperature. Trends of mean measured adhesion forces with temperature and salinity were compared with the DLVO and XDLVO theories. DLVO theory captured the trend with temperature via the impact of temperature on electric double layer interactions, whereas XDLVO theory captured the observed trend with salinity via the impact of salinity on the repulsive hydration force. Our results highlight the significance of hydration force in accurately predicting the fate of fines in porous media.

This study addresses the challenges of mass production and extensive application of superhydrophobic coatings, focusing on adhesion and durability. We propose an innovative solution utilizing screen printing and UV curing techniques, offering a simple, replicable, and scalable process. Our two-step strategy involves applying a polyurethane diacrylate (PUA-2) adhesion layer to the glass surface through screen printing and UV curing to ensure superior adhesion. Next, a polyurethane hexaacrylate (PUA-6) based formulation is applied over the adhesion layer and subjected to light curing, resulting in excellent hydrophobicity, scratch resistance, and corrosion resistance. This method withstands a pullout force exceeding 5 MPa, achieving a water contact angle of 164.3° and a sliding angle of 1.6°. The coating maintains favorable superhydrophobicity after 80 rounds of sandpaper friction and demonstrates promising corrosion resistance in a 3.5 % NaCl solution. Notably, this approach streamlines large-scale production and delivers exceptional, well-defined performance, providing a promising avenue for widespread and sustainable applications of superhydrophobic coatings.

In severely cold regions, it is very difficult to prevent the formation of ice on solid surfaces, even on superhydrophobic (SH) surfaces. Compared with anti-icing surfaces, icephobic surfaces are more useful in practice. In this work, a traditional epoxy coating was modified by using maleic anhydride (MAH) as a crosslinking agent, in addition to filling a small amount of epoxy resin grafted with fluorine containing chains (FEP). The wettability and the mechanical properties of the modified coating, as well as the adhesive strength of ice on the coating surface and the stability of the icephobic properties of the coating, were systematically studied. The results showed that the modified coating surface became more hydrophobic and the force required to remove ice from the surface was less than that needed for removing on the unmodified coating surface. Furthermore, the modified coating has excellent mechanical properties. After sanding with abrasive paper, the unmodified coating surface is more hydrophilic, whereas the modified coating surface retains its hydrophobicity. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicates that compared with crosslinking by traditional polyamides, crosslinking using MAH greatly reduces the number of polar groups on the coating surface. The FEP introduction further reduces the free energy of the coating surface. As a result, the modified epoxy coating exhibits excellent icephobic performance. This study will be helpful for the design of icephobic epoxy coatings for use in practical applications. For example, it may make the de-icing on the underside of trains running in cold regions becomes more easily.

The hexagonal epithelial cells covered with mucus are believed to be responsible for the superior adhesion ability of tree frogs under dry and wet conditions. In spite of good progress made in the past years, many questions about the mechanism of wet adhesion remain to be addressed. Here, a tree frog-inspired wet adhesive, termed structured hydrogel adhesive, with poly(acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel to mimic the hexagonal epithelial cells and glycerol–water mixture to mimic the mucus is reported. The combined analysis of adhesion force and work of adhesion reveals the major contribution of direct solid–solid contact in wet adhesion. The contributions of capillarity and viscosity of liquid are qualitatively decoupled by regulating the fluid components and the temperature. The study offers an excellent model system and a great opportunity to gain deep insight into wet adhesion of animals, like tree frogs, which may pave the way for the design of adhesives for wet environments.
