Shape Memory Arrays Top Coated by Adjustable Mushroom with Switchable Adhesion to Both Solid and Liquid

Xiaofeng Liu,Lei Jia,Yufen Li,Ruoxi Zhao,Chao Wu,Zhimin Xie,Zhongjun Cheng,Yuyan Liu,Dongjie Zhang

Switchable adhesion, especially that responds to both solids and liquids simultaneously, has recently attracted much attention due to its wide applications. However, it is hard to endow a surface with switchable solid/liquid adhesion and high maximum solid adhesion at the same time due to the opposing requirement of solid contact fraction. In this paper, a shape memory/elasticity dual-structure adjustable strategy to satisfy that special demand is offered. In detail, by constructing the shape memory epoxy resin arrays with spherical polyurethane mushroom on Fe 3 O 4 doped substrate, a smart photo/thermal responsive material with switchable solid/liquid adhesion is prepared. In the work, the structure of the shape memory resin arrays can be reversibly changed between upright and collapsed states, leading to switchable solid and liquid adhesion. Meantime, the structure of the polyurethane mushroom can be squeezed to increase the contact area with the solid and spontaneously recovered, which can effectively improve the maximum solid adhesion with no effect on liquid adhesion. Furthermore, the obtained material has good cyclicity and universality, which has been applied to selectively pick silicon wafers and water droplets. The findings of this study may provide new strategies for the development of smart adhesive materials.

Acarid Suction Cup-Inspired Rapid and Tunable Magnetic Adhesion

Xiaocheng Hu,Yimou Fu,Yide Liu,Binhong Liu,Shaoxing Qu

Adhesion appears in nature as a kind of clinging strategy for living creatures to survive in a complex environment. Nevertheless, the artificial counterpart applications are limited by many factors, such as slow responding rate and high driving voltage. In this paper, a novel magnetic adhesion achieved by the actuation of Ecoflex embedded with iron particles is presented, which is demonstrated by a magnetic suction cup (MSC) that can switch the adhesion state within 500 ms. Compared with suction cups made of the dielectric elastomer in existing literature, the present work's driving voltage is safe for humans. Furthermore, a mechanical model is developed and verified to optimize the design of the MSCs. By applying an altering magnetic field, the adhesive force varying with time exhibits complex waveforms such as sinusoidal wave, triangle wave, square wave, and even pulse wave can be achieved. For some situations that large adhesion force is not necessarily considered while the adhesion requires to be accurately and quickly controlled, such as transfer printing and intelligent sensing, the magnetic adhesion demonstrated in this article will enrich the future available applications.

Electrically Programmable Interfacial Adhesion for Ultrastrong Hydrogel Bonding

Yaqian Liu,Pudi Wang,Xing Su,Liang Xu,Zhuoling Tian,Hao Wang,Guojun Ji,Jianyong Huang

Adjustable interfacial adhesion is of great significance in smart-hydrogel-related engineering fields. This study presents an electroadhesion strategy for universal and ultrastrong hydrogel bonding with electrically programmable strength. An ionic hydrogel containing lithium ions is designed to achieve hydrated-ion-diffusion-mediated interfacial adhesion, where external electric fields are employed to precisely control spatiotemporal dynamics of the ion diffusion across ionic adhesion region (IAR). The hydrogel can realize a universal, ultrastrong, efficient, tough, reversible, and environmentally tolerant electroadhesion to diverse hydrogels, whose peak adhesion strength and interfacial adhesion toughness are as high as 1.2 MPa and 3750 J m −2 , respectively. With a mechanoelectric coupling model, the dominant role of the hydrated ions in IAR played in the interfacial electroadhesion is further quantitatively revealed. The proposed strategy opens a door for developing high-performance adhesion hydrogels with electrically programmable functions, which are indispensable for various emerging fields like flexible electronics and soft robotics.

Tree Frog-Inspired Structured Hydrogel Adhesive with Regulated Liquid

Fandong Meng,Quan Liu,Zhekun Shi,Di Tan,Baisong Yang,Xin Wang,Kui Shi,Michael Kappl,Yifeng Lei,Sheng Liu,Longjian Xue

The hexagonal epithelial cells covered with mucus are believed to be responsible for the superior adhesion ability of tree frogs under dry and wet conditions. In spite of good progress made in the past years, many questions about the mechanism of wet adhesion remain to be addressed. Here, a tree frog-inspired wet adhesive, termed structured hydrogel adhesive, with poly(acrylamide)/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel to mimic the hexagonal epithelial cells and glycerol–water mixture to mimic the mucus is reported. The combined analysis of adhesion force and work of adhesion reveals the major contribution of direct solid–solid contact in wet adhesion. The contributions of capillarity and viscosity of liquid are qualitatively decoupled by regulating the fluid components and the temperature. The study offers an excellent model system and a great opportunity to gain deep insight into wet adhesion of animals, like tree frogs, which may pave the way for the design of adhesives for wet environments.

Tough Adhesion of Nucleobase-Tackifed Gels in Diverse Solvents

Xin Liu,Qin Zhang,Lijie Duan,Guanghui Gao

Adhesive gels have attracted increasing attention in biological medicine and industrial fields. However, it remains a huge challenge to achieve robust adhesion in various nonpolar and polar solvents. Herein, a tough nucleobase-tackified adhesive gel is successfully fabricated and exhibits strong adhesion to various materials in diverse solvents, including hexane, chloroform, dimethyl sulfoxide, ethanol, and water (seawater, high salt, acid, and alkali aqueous solutions). The adhesive gels possess high toughness and excellent resist fatigue as well as impressive nonswelling behavior in water or oil. This tough gel-based adhesive holds great promise for various applications, such as battery adhesives, soft robots, wound dressing, wearable devices, and 3D printing in various environments. It is anticipated that this strategy will provide a novel route for fabricating the next generation of adhesive soft materials.

Protein-based supramolecular adhesive capable of on-demand adhesion and anti-adhesion for preventing undesired epidural tissue adhesion

Tong Li,Guang Wen,He Zhao,Yang Qu,Han Wu,Yingchuan Sun,Jianwu Zhao,Wen Li

The undesired adhesion between the dura mater and surrounding tissues is a great challenge in the clinical treatment of spinal stenosis and disc herniation, and this condition can typically lead to failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) and persistent or recurrent lumbosacral pain or sciatica. Here, a protein-based supramolecular adhesive featured with wet adhesion and on-demand anti-adhesion via non-covalent interactions between anionic glycyrrhizic acid (GA) nanofibers and N-α-lauroyl-arginine ethyl ester hydrochloride (LAE) dispersed zein colloid (zein-LAE). By controlling the crosslinking density of the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular polymers, the adhesion and anti-adhesion could be conveniently regulated. In detail, suitable amount of GA improved the adhesion strength of the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular adhesives, whereas excessive GA caused the surface curing and anti-adhesion. It was proposed that the anti-adhesion outcome was attributed to the enhanced cross-linking density and Young’s modulus of the supramolecular polymers, and the declined freedom of the binding groups. The excellent biocompatibility and biodegradation enabled the zein-LAE/GA supramolecular polymers to function as easy-to-implement Janus implants for the in vivo prevention of postoperative epidural adhesion in a rat model. In conclusion, the physical barrier of the Janus implant together with the anti-oxidation and anti-inflammatory effects of the GA component played a synergistic role in achieving epidural anti-adhesion.

Water-Activated Degradable Supramolecular Bioadhesive Powder for Underwater Tissue Adhesion and Wound Healing

Hongjian Huang,Zongxuan Huang,Shuichang Chen,Xiaoyu Yang,Hu Zhao,Qinhui Chen,Haiqing Liu

Traditional suturing and stapling demand surgical skill and risk additional trauma, whereas conventional tissue adhesives falter on wet surfaces. Inspired by cement curing, a water-activated bioadhesive powder (WABP) was developed in this work. WABP was a mixture of tannic acid-terminated poly(lipoic acid) (TA-PLA) and arginine (Arg), in which the TA-PLA was synthesized through the Michael addition reaction of PLA containing disulfide radicals with TA possessing a radical quenching effect. Upon hydration, the powder swiftly formed a self-assembled coacervate adhesive, which exhibited antiswelling properties in underwater environments, a result of the combined effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic associations. The WABP, harnessing the attributes of both powder and coacervate adhesives, was adept at conforming to an irregular wound shape and delivered stable bioadhesive performance. It demonstrated superior wound healing capabilities, antibacterial properties, favorable cytocompatibility, and histocompatibility. This supramolecular WABP offers a simple, multifunctional alternative to sutures for biomedical applications.

Designing protein-tannin nanohesives for rapid, universal, and robust wet-adhesion with on-demand debonding

Zhuo Ge,Hanyu Ren,Rongli Zhang,Chunhui Luo

Establishing the adhesion between soft yet wet materials remains challenging due to the interfacial water, the dilution of polymer strands, and the lubrication of the interface. Herein, nanohesives based on the grape seed protein and tannic acid (GSP-TANHs) were reported to adhere various hydrogels (including polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, poly 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane-sulfonic acid, and chitosan) with each other. Due to the rapid formation of widely available short-range forces between nanoparticles and hydrogel surfaces, GSP-TANHs could establish the initial adhesion around 10 s. Additionally, they served as universal hesives to a wide range of substrates without chemical modifications or pretreatments for adherents, such as plastics, cardboard, glass, iron, and rubber. The adhesion force for cardboard reached 11.37 N. Meanwhile, the adhesion force could be easily regulated by varying nanoparticle sizes and specific surface area. Thanks to the sensitivity of hydrogen bonding to heating, on-demand debonding was realized after increasing the temperature to 45 °C. Because of the reversible interactions, the adhesion was also repeatable. Due to the merits of grape seed protein and plant polyphenol, it could be completely biodegraded within 7 days. Bearing several merits, this strategy has promising applications in new implantable devices, E-skin, and biofabrication processes.

Mussel-inspired blue-light-activated cellulose-based adhesive hydrogel with fast gelation, rapid haemostasis and antibacterial property for wound healing

Shengchang Lu,Xiaohui Zhang,Zuwu Tang,He Xiao,Min Zhang,Kai Liu,Lihui Chen,Liulian Huang,Yonghao Ni,Hui Wu

Uncontrollable bleeding and wound infection remain as the primary challenges for emergency surgical procedures, including deep and non-compressible bleeding in the clinic or on the battleground. To better control haemorrhaging immediately from irregularly shaped and non-compressible wounds, double-network adhesive hydrogels based on cellulose and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA)-cation copolymer were designed for wound healing. Due to the abundance of hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, cation-π and electrostatic interactions in the double-network adhesives, the hydrogel with good biocompatibility presented tissue-like mechanical strength with Young’s modulus below 20 kPa. The catechol-cation cooperation effect enhances the wet adhesion of hydrogels to skin tissue surfaces. The blue-light-induced fast gelation networks provide rapid haemostasis ability of the hydrogels by sealing blood vessels. The quaternary ammonium cationic polymers have remarkable antibacterial properties and promote blood coagulation by erythrocyte and platelet aggregation. Furthermore, the hydrogel with 2.5% P(DOPMAm- co -MPTC) (AC/PDM 2.5 ) exhibited better tissue adhesion strength than commercially available glue, better haemostatic capability than the gauze based on the mouse-tail amputation model, and higher performance compared to Tegaderm™ in the rat full-thickness skin defect model. These adhesive hydrogels with fast gelling, rapid haemostasis, biocompatibility and antibacterial activity offer great promising applications in wound healing.

Deformation-Tolerant Linkage of Silicone Rubbers and Carbon-Based Elastomers via Chemical and Topological Adhesion

Daohang Cai,Yanhao Yu

Integrating silicone rubbers with carbon-based elastomers is a common practice in assembling stretchable electronics, but weak or rigid interfacial linkages often lead to structural failure under deformation. Here, we present a chemical and topological adhesive (CTA) composed of poly(styrene-isobutylene-styrene) (SIBS) and maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) to bridge silicone rubbers and carbon-based elastomers. The CTA synergizes covalent bonding (via amine-anhydride reactions) with topological entanglement (enabled by matched chain reptation), achieves interfacial toughness >200 J m-2 through finger-pressing and can be further increased to >600 J m-2 via hot pressing. The adhered interface can endure 10,000 cycles of 100% stretch and 10 days of exposure to acidic/alkaline solutions (pH 1–13). The CTA applies to various silicone rubbers (e.g., PDMS and Ecoflex) and carbon-based elastomers (e.g., SEBS, SIBS, and SBS). This adhesion strategy significantly increases the interfacial toughness of stretchable devices in practical usage, offering a general solution for deformation-tolerant integration of stretchable electronics.

A Chitosan-containing Dual-Crosslinked Resilient Patch for Tissue Adhesive and Sealant

Jiayu Yang,Qiaoling Li,Jianpeng Zhang,Siyang Wu,Min Zhang,Lihui Chen,Hui Wu,Shengchang Lu

Adhesive patches are optimum candidates for distinct biomedical applications including tissue adhesion and leakage sealing in outpatient or surgical procedures. Unfortunately, most adhesive patches are significantly less effective at providing strong adhesion to the surface of wet tissue, which increases the risk and reduces the fault tolerance in surgery. Meanwhile, customization is difficult to achieve in terms of mechanical adaptability. To tackle this problem, we developed a chitosan-containing bioadhesive patch (ANC) comprising dual cross-linked carboxymethyl chitosan methacrylate (CMCS-MA), acrylic acid and acrylic acid N-hydroxysuccinimide ester. This ingenious and convenient design strategy facilitates the integrated polymerization of the patch, while circumventing the necessity for additional crosslinkers. ANC patches in dry state and the rich carboxyl groups contained therein enable rapid removal of moisture from tissue surfaces. Subsequently, robust adhesion based on hydrogen bonding and NHS-amine interaction is formed. The dual-crosslinked ANC patch achieve good adjustable mechanical performance and swelling behavior by controlling the addition of CMCS-MA. Furthermore, compared with commercially available fibrin glue, ANC patches own robust adhesion and superior sealing performance for stomach fluid leakage. This intricately designed ANC patch sheds new light on biomedical patch design and broadening the scope of chitosan-containing materials in tissue adhesive and sealant applications.

Resolving hyperelasticity-adhesiveness conflict in polymer networks by in situ constructing mechanical heterogeneities

Zhang Ping,Ruan Haowei,Li Qingxian,He Yunfeng,Yang Canhui

Stretchable materials with low hysteresis and strong adhesion are needed in applications, but unifying the two contradictory mechanical properties is challenging. Herein, we propose the design principles of polymer networks that are hyperelastic yet adhesive by rationalizing mechanical heterogeneities. The heterogeneous networks comprise a viscoelastic adhesive surface and a hyperelastic non-adhesive bulk. The former has a stiffness much smaller than that of the latter. We synthesize the networks by harnessing the oxygen inhibition mechanism, construct a polymerization phase diagram by reconciling the kinetics of polymerization and radical quenching of oxygen, and establish a power law criterion for the transition from a viscoelastic adhesive network to a hyperelastic adhesive network. We illustrate the principle with heterogeneous poly(butyl acrylate- co -acrylic acid) networks, achieving hysteresis <5% and adhesion energy >300 J/m 2 . We show that the adhesion energy-thickness relation of hyperelastic adhesive polymer networks is nonlinear below a transition thickness. Hyperelastic and adhesive stretchable materials potentialize high-cycle and fatigue-resistant soft human-machine interfaces and beyond.
