Preparing porous carbon electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors using green, low-cost, and well-sourced renewable resources is increasingly becoming an important research area. This paper highlights the possibility of furfural residue (FR) as a precursor to porous carbon for utilization as supercapacitor electrode materials. We propose a simple method to prepare FR-based nitrogen-doped porous carbon through H 3 PO 4 hydrothermal pretreatment and KOH/melamine synergistic activation. The obtained carbon material (NFRPC-700) displays a large specific surface area(3259.4 m 2 g -1 ), high pore volume(1.67 cm 3 g -1 ), and excellent nitrogen doping. In the three-electrode system, NFRPC-700 demonstrates great electrochemical performance (specific capacitance value of 337 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ). Assembly into a symmetric supercapacitor provides superior cycling stability (the capacitance retention remained essentially unchanged after 20,002 cycles at a current density of 5 A g −1 ) and high energy density(11.81 Wh kg −1 at 275 W kg −1 power density). This study provides an effective method to achieve high-value utilization of FR waste.

A two-stage alcoholysis was developed for improved conversion of furfural residue (FR) into levulinic acid (LA) and methyl levulinate (ML). Mixed acids including 0.01 M of H 2 SO 4 and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and methanol/water (50/50 v/v%) were identified as the suitable catalyst and reaction medium. The optimum alcoholysis conditions were 198 °C and 1.5 h for the 1st stage and then 163 °C and 1.3 h for the 2nd stage, and the maximum total yield of LA and ML can reach 25.64%. The reaction kinetics and possible conversion pathways for ML and LA production were proposed. On the basis, HCOOH/H 2 O 2 pretreatment was screened for the pretreatment of FR, which increased the cellulose content of FR from 40.01 to 71.91%. The maximum total yield of LA and ML from pretreated FR was 44.96% under the optimum conditions of 195 °C and 1.9 h for the 1st stage and then 166 °C and 1.1 h for the 2nd stage, which was 16.09% higher than that of isothermal alcoholysis. The reusability tests showed that the Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 was stable and can be reused at least 5 times. This study developed a new method for high-value utilization of FR and cleaner production of LA and ML.

Levulinic acid (LA), regarded as one of the top twelve biomass-based platform chemicals, has been extensively studied by numerous researchers. In this study, a high LA concentration and yield were obtained through an enhanced in situ feeding strategy with a high loading of furfural residue (FR). The effects of batch process, one-time feeding and two-time feeding strategy on the hydrolysis performance (LA yield and concentrations, as well as intermediate glucose yield and concentrations) were investigated. The humin-based byproducts generated during different processes were also characterized by SEM, FT-IR and XRD analysis. The best results of one-time feeding strategy were obtained at 3 wt% H 2 SO 4 , 170 °C for 60 min with an initial FR concentration of 15% supplemented to 20% at 0th min. Under these conditions, the LA concentration and yield reached 30.00 g/L and 15% (51.1 mol%), respectively. Furthermore, a hybrid model integrated with the shrinking core model and a quasi-first-order kinetic model was adopted to elucidate the kinetic behavior of LA production from highly concentrated substrates through batch and feeding processes. The results indicated that a one-time feeding strategy can lower the activation energy required for FR degradation to glucose to 96.6 kJ/mol ( R 2 > 0.97). Similarly, the activation energy for the conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) and the subsequent formation of LA from 5-HMF were reduced to 80.9 kJ/mol ( R 2 > 0.97) and 23.3 kJ/mol ( R 2 > 0.97), respectively. Notably, the reaction rate of glucose to form humins was slightly reduced. This research helps to optimize the LA yield and concentration directly via an enhanced in situ feeding approach, providing valuable process operation and kinetic information for the industrial LA production from FR.

Converting biomass waste into high-performance adsorbents is crucial for environmental remediation. In this study, a novel nitrogen-doped porous biochar (FRLB-K-N) with an ultra-high specific surface area (3463.87 m 2 /g) was synthesized from furfural residue lignin. FRLB-K-N exhibited an extremely high adsorption capacity (q e ) of 2242 ± 7.8 mg/g for tetracycline (TC). The results indicate that the abundant ordered graphite structure of the lignin-based adsorbent enhances its adsorption capacity for organic pollutants through conjugated aromatic interactions. Following lignin purification, the q e increases by 51 ± 8.9 %. The synergistic effect of melamine and KOH on the etching of the carbon skeleton not only enhances the adsorption capacity, but also optimizes the pore structure of the porous carbon, thereby improving the kinetic performance. The coexisting metal ions inhibit the adsorption of TC on FRLB-K-N by competitively adsorbing and occupying the active sites. The FRLB-K-N exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity for TC across a broad pH range (pH=2–10), attributed to its ultra-high specific surface area, abundant surface oxygen groups (including C O, -OH etc.) and ordered aromatic structure. The adsorption mechanism belongs to monolayer chemisorption, mainly maintained by electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and pore filling to maintain its high adsorption performance in real aqueous environments. Notably, FRLB-K-N exhibits excellent stability and recyclability. Its adsorption capacity remains nearly unchanged after five recycles via simple desorption, indicating its great potential as a robust and recyclable adsorbent for antibiotic removal in practical applications.
